Kewpee is a Lima institution. It is so old-timey and cute. At first, I wasn't so crazy about it (because I was weird and wasn't really into hamburgers...WHAT), but the charm has really grown on me over the years. First of all, I think everyone who works here is over 60 - the sweetest old ladies. Then, there's the fact that they use Miracle Whip, which is my favorite magical chemical substance. You come here to eat hamburgers, of the skinny little griddle patty variety, and tell the nice old ladies what toppings you would like. For sugar, the frosty and lemon crunch pie are great options. Just remember, the soda sizes haven't been supersized, so a medium is actually pretty small - thirsty folks, take note. read more

I know I should be giving five stars to one of the Lima Kewpees (it IS the headquarters, after all), but I have to say that the one in Racine, Wisconsin is just a *tad* better (but only a tad and only for the lunch counter ambiance & Kewpee doll decor). This Kewpee is still great and definitely has some tasty hamburgers! Reading MothersHelper D.'s review makes me really bummed that I didn't try the sugar cream pie (which I've never even seen before), but damn, I was so full after a burger, fries and a small chocolate malt (the original Frosty), I just couldn't do it! The malt, though... ohh, the malt! It always steals the show. The small was a perfectly-sized dessert and cost only a dollar for smooth, rich, creamy delight. I'm not quite sure if it's made from real dairy or not, but it is waaaaay better than a Wendy's Frosty. Take that, stupid dollar menus at other fast food restaurants! I am picky when it comes to burgers. I find most fast food and casual restaurants serve their burgers way too greasy or too under seasoned for my liking, but Kewpee hits the nail on the head perfectly. The bun is always unbelievably soft, the meat is fresh and charred deliciously around the edges, and I LOVE getting green olives on top! Their fries and milkshakes are even amazing. This place is an old school burger joint. 50% of the patrons are drinking coffee with their burgers and all most everyone has a pice of homemade pie for desert. For people who aren't familiar with Kewpee, this is the original fast food burger. Great quality ingredients and a menu that doesn't change, because it's been so successful. This place seems to be the inspiration for In-and-out and the Wendy's types. The decor at this location is very different. You almost feel like your eating in a food court or hospital cafeteria. It's not awful by any means, just outdated compared to your typical fast food burger joint. But there is plenty of seating. read more

First time here, in from Columbus the Loud in Lima festival. LOVE this history behind it! Very cool. The throwback look works, digging the all white uniforms. Very efficient, reminds me of In and Out Burger in that regard. Double Cheeseburger was good. Lemon Slush was very good, extremely tart. The chili was disgusting. Sorry KewPee, no other way to describe it. The base seemed to be gelatin...it was rough. Barely kept my second bite down. Pineapple Upside Down by was good, surprisingly tart. The Pecan Pie was amazing! Pecans not overdone, and the filling was different from any other Pecan Pie I've had before. Definitely a place to stop by if your traveling through the area! read more

Kewpee's is perfectly alright, but I think people let the nostalgia factor get in the way. The burgers themselves are fine, but the buns they use are pretty underwhelming. I know this is Limaland sacrilege, but I think Wendy's has far better buns. In fact, for burgers alone, I think Wendy's is better, but far less consistently good than Kewpee's. Kewpee's pies and fries are far better, however. The malts leave me kinda cold. (ha ha) read more

I told her I needed it to go as I was traveling back to Indy, are you sure the cashier asked you would not want to ruin that nice white shirt. A double with everything can get a little messy. Pretty Mediocre if you ask me. The only reason I give it three stars instead of two is that it is a local restaurant with several locations and the stores have character. Besides that I wasn't impressed. I've had hamburgers taste better from vending machines. If you want water instead of soda, then they give you a small, very very small cup, to fill up yourself from the water fountain. Pretty lame. Look, I've been eating at Kewpee for 60+ years. But lately their bun quality has slipped a couple notches. The bun literally comes apart in your hands. The buns are fresh, but are flakey. Kewpee needs to get on their bakery about this. I think they have their own recipe that Nickles makes, but they aren't up to what they were 6 months ago. Probably switched to some non gluten flour or something. Anyway, get back to your usual quality, Kewpee. read more

Looking for a bite to eat. Came in and immediately felt unwelcome by the staff; the lady taking our order was rude beyond belief. Along with the food being on par with something Michelle Obama would serve kids in school. Plain gross, no flavor just a grease trap. This is a place of local lore. If you're not from Limaland and didn't grow up with a Kewpee Burger, you probably won't get what the hype is about. This is a place that was a treat when I was a kid and is now a stop when I'm driving through. Go with a Kewpee Burger (deluxe, or whatever they call it with the toppings), fries (krinkle cut!), and a frosty malt. Their pie is also raved about. This location often has busloads of school children or other large parties, but it's a big place and runs very efficiently. Service is always friendly and quick. This place is a strange throwback kind of burger joint. Definitely a local hotspot; I immediately felt like an out of place outsider when I walked in. Didn't matter, as the food was worth a little awkwardness. Got a burger and fries and how could I resist the pies in the case just staring at me like that? Orders are taken by hand and rung up old fashioned like. I couldn't tell if they took credit cards so I'm glad to have brought cash. Food came out quickly and super hot, made as I ordered. Burger patties seemed fresh and lived up the fresh ground meat advertisement I saw driving in. Fries were hot and fresh. The pie was an excellent finish to the meal. Kewpee was first brought to my attention by my accounting professor who is a native of Lima. He told us the story of how Dave Thomas of Wendy's got his blueprint from Kewpee. In December, I had to made trips from Columbus, OH to Detroit and in doing so, I made a side trip to Kewpee. Our first visit was at the downtown location and the bustling and friendly atmosphere in the cozy confines made for a unique dining experience. The burgers, fries, pies, chili, and drinks were delicious as to be expected since it was freshly made to order. The decor and ambiance coupled by the food takes one back to a different era. Maybe that's why the sign on the wall reads, "Your Granpappy ate here." I definitely recommend this to the foodie who enjoys good quality food that is only to be upstaged by the overall dining experience. read more

The Eastside Kewpee is the newest I believe. It lacks the character of the original store, sitting in a white 1970s box-up instead of the enameled art deco abode of the aforementioned downtown location. It still offers the same food, in selection and quality--the same locally grown meat, same hydroponic toppings, same rich fries. I wrote a review of the original a couple years ago, my opinion on quality and taste still holds. Though I caution the reader to consider the source. I've eaten at the Kewpee from the time I came off milk and could handle solid food. So my opinion may be subjective, nostalgia entering my senses and warping my opinion. I say this because visitor's opinion on this place can be mixed. (Note: the porcelain doll hanging up over the door may seem strange but it's really not. It is a Kewpie Doll, look it up. It is an icon of early 20th century Americana. Sheesh people!) The Kewpee is simple. One of the first fast food chains it serve staples of the genre. Mostly hamburgers, fries, sodas. Said to be what Dave Thomas copied to develop Wendy's, Kewpee also have soft-serve frosties, and weakly spiced chilly. The burgers can be too thin, but their freshly cut beef brings an off-the-farm taste that the major chains lack. It's pure fatty, comfort food--I think their version of a veggie sandwich is a bun with tomatoes, pickle, lettuce, ect. Something they should fix. Pies here are recommended. They are bakery made and delicious. Cherry pies are the best, though can be overly rich. The atmosphere here is bad. The dinning room is a large, echoing cafeteria devoid of music and can get noisy, especially when a bus load of students come screaming in. Half the exterior walls are windows that wash the place with sunlight, but the view is of a Save-A-lot and a seedy motel. The decor is a clash of orange booths, brown flooring, and the teal brick walls of the restrooms. Another pitfall is the wait. A popular joint in town, the line can stretch to the lobbies on both sides of the counter. The drive-thru too can be a wait, the line spilling out into Save-A-Lot's parking. Best to come midday in the business week, where one can be serviced fast and have a quiet dinner. read more

If you're vegetarian, they don't have many options- there's a "vegetable" sandwich that consists of mayo, lettuce, and tomatoes. However, if you ask, they'll add cheese, pickles, banana peppers, and green olives as well. Their menu states that they have frozen yogurt, but it's actually soft serve ice cream, not fro-to. However, their fries and pies make up for both these things. The Sugar pie is absolutely amazing! The pies are a MUST here! read more

Fun, fun place. We stopped here while passing through Ohio. Got in line and saw the guy in front have a form filled out. We reached for a form but he stopped us and said the staff would do it and asked if it was our first time there. (Ha - was it that obvious?) He informed us that we picked the best burger place ever! The fries are just mediocre fries but the winner is the frosty malt. Not powdered - the real thing. The food takes awhile but they're actually making it when you order it - it's not premade. After heading to Fort Wayne, IN for a family wedding, my brother insisted we make a detour to Kewpee on our way back home to Columbus. Our intention was to go to the original location, y'know, to get that authentic feel, but it was closed for some photo shoot or something. I'm assuming for a Vogue cover shot. Anyway, we headed out to this one instead. Big place, and since we were there at prime lunch time it was pretty crowded. I agree with whoever made the comment that it looks like a food court. I mean, it's probably the largest fast food restaurant I've ever been to. Two lines, how fun! Because of the two lines we moved through quickly despite the place being packed. So I ordered a double cheeseburger, fries, drink, and malt. I forgot to add olives to my burger, drats! Fries were for sure better than Wendy's. Wendy's fries are consistently lukewarm, way over salted (and this is coming from someone who likes salt), and limp. My Kewpee fries were nice and crispy with that pillowy potato softness I like inside. Burger was pretty good...I wish I ordered a single though, as my bun really fell apart. Malt also good. I haven't had a Frosty in so long though that I can't compare it to Wendy's. IDK, it's chocolate and that's all that matters to me. All in all, good experience and tasty food. I'm very rarely in this area, so who knows when I make it back, but I love a good burger and fry meal so hopefully it will be sooner rather than later! Kewpee doll + slogan of "Hamburg pickle on top, makes your heart go flippity-flop!" would make a great preface for a horror movie. You're welcome, Hollywood. read more
