Stellar breakfast on a random Friday am. When they say WAIT! At the hostess stand they mean it- they will be out to grab you as soon as they clean up other tables- most likely for you. It's open, there is a bar to your right as you enter and lots of seating to your right and front. Can eat at bar. We sat, mimosas and bloodies available. Or for that matter- whatever you can think of. They have scotch eggs swimming in a bowl of gravy... yes gravy... and it was delicious. Definitely a Mexican "flair" with lots of black beans, sauces, etc. I stuck with a Belt sandwich - nice and crispy bread with bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato. Friendly service and lots of value! My friend & I dine at the Dark Horse occasionally. We generally have a good experience, esp if Evian the server is there. Tonight we sat at the bar. We did not have a good experience this time. Our bartender Shanna was less than enthusiastic about serving us. She had an attitude & was yawning Alot! We ordered margaritas, which were good as always. Then we ordered our dinner. i ordered the perch dinner W fries & coleslaw. The perch was good, the fries were way overdone & coleslaw bland. My friend ordered prime rib medium rare. The rib was served Medium to Medium well. Shanna took it away & brought a Médium rare one, which was much better. I almost forgot about the Horrible house salads she served us. She returned them & brought us the Cole slaw & Augratin potatoes. The mistakes were corrected, but totally changed our view of the Dark Horse. I hope improvements will be made! read more

Not impressive. Stopped in for the first time for a bite of lunch only to be extremely disappointed by the food and atmosphere. The French Onion Soup was a disaster! No onions what so ever just broth with a few bread cubes. Cheese was all goopy around the bottom of the cup not broiled over the top. On to the colossal fail of a club sandwich. This was no club sandwich this was not three slices of bread cut into triangles with all the fixings. This was a messy unappetizing sloppy joke. My waitress was however attentive and kind. Just passing through... Really the place is Awesome. We were traveling over the holidays and came across the Dark Horse. It was a little off the beaten path and the building is not fancy but the food and service were outstanding. I had the mushroom burger with onion rings which was worth ordering again. Baby girl had the bacon cheeseburger with fries and she loved it - the burgers are thick and prepared well - Wifie had the club sandwich with a side salad. We've been going here for years and LOVE it; so glad to get back for some amazing breakfast. Also love the place since the renovations? Looks great inside!!! My hubs had and really enjoyed the chicken fried steak. I should probably avoid anything named "splitter" in the future. It was a bit concerning when we walked in and found a long corridor with long benches for waiting. The wait was only 20 minutes for a table. But that is only one of the waiting games that happen at dinner time. We waited to order. We waited to get our food. We waited to get our check. Waiting was the name of the game over the two hour dining experience. They did upgrade the onion rings as an apology, but when portion sizes are this large more food really doesn't have a great appeal. We tried to be patient. Stopped in after a year to eat their famous onion rings & club sandwich. Used to go weekly for lunch but ever since I changed jobs, just not feasible to go on a regular basis. Finally had a chance to return but was sadly disappointed and will be my last time. Atmosphere and prices have not changed but value has. Onions rings are not longer the crispy and light battered. The batter was falling off and was stale. Not crispy. Club sandwich was not the three pieces of bread with layers of goodies cut into quarters. Now, two pieces of stale bread and cut in half. Wish the food was just as I remembered and while I know everyone is trying to cut costs and so forth, this was just a poor decision. Goodbye Dark Horse! read more

From the outside Dark Horse looks like a dive bar and once you get inside, it's not much better. The bar section is indeed rather divey, loud and sports bar oriented. The dining area isn't all that much better visually with cheap tables, chairs, wires hanging around and void of any decent eye catching décor. But when it comes to food, Dark Horse isn't so dark. I actually shines with good culinary variety all rather tasty and well done. They offer some real treats like peach plates and sandwiches. You must try Lake Eire perch, and as another local treat from the Great Lakes, walleye pike. Then some local strange things like Hog & Slaw rolls being an egg roll stuffed with pulled pork and coleslaw served with a chipotle sauce. For me, I went for their prime rib which was totally delicious, wonderful, especially with the accompanying horse radish. And though I had their green fried tomatoes, found them done in a rather blasé Carolina style absent a good texture and not all that flavorful. For dinks I had a bourbon Manhattan which was nicely done and at $5.95 a heck of a good bargain as was my prime rib on special for a mere $13.99. As far as bargain deals for meals, and very good meals, it's truly difficult to beat Dark Horse. But just on food taste and quality alone, I'd still be a fan of it. read more

Stopped in for lunch around 12:30. About 1/2 of the tables were in use. Waiter was friendly and did her job well. Unfortunately it took 45 minutes to get our food. The food itself was "OK" but that's all. Their French onion soup was fair but not great. The rail splitter was huge but the chili was bland and the fries a bit overdone. I am a former restaurant manager and trainer. It seemed like the waitresses were working all over the place and not in sections. it's hard to know when you get new customers that way. I was there for breakfast today. they were busy and we had a long wait before we had our order taken. I don't think our waitress knew we were there people that can in after us were able to order before us and received their food way before we did. I wasn't that impressed with our food. I felt sorry for bus person, so many trips back and forth to clear the tables it would have been nice if she would have had a bus tub, she would have been able to clear the tables all in one trip. read more

Their specials are always changing, and it seems like they really try to make an array of tastes for people with differing tastes in food. The appetizers are extremely tasty, the diner staple entrees are classically made, and the bar is a good place to chill out and have a brew or two. The prices are the best part! They are very reasonably priced. Between $4-$10 for an app, and around $13 for most entrees. The serving size is usually massive, and the drink prices are reasonable. The place was recently remodeled, and looks clean and modern. If you're coming off the interstate, drive a half a click farther and try this place out. read more

We ate here on Sunday afternoon. Upon walking in, a sign asks you to stay in the entry area "out of respect for the current diners" and said a hostess would be along shortly. We waited... and waited... and waited. I finally decided the sign didn't apply to Sundays or something of that nature, and peeked around the corner. A young women eventually saw me, came to the doorway and when I told her I wasn't sure what to do, as this was our first time here, she rolled her eyes and interrupted with "How many?" We said 2 and she said she would go get the hostess. More waiting. We were just planning to walk out when the same woman came back and told us to follow her. The staff was bickering over where to sit us as they found one of the empty tables. I felt like we were bothering them more than anything. The waiter was pleasant and attended to our needs. He seemed a bit rushed and annoyed as well, but took care of our needs. Our table was a bit gritty. The menu was filthy with food and drink stains. The food (pork egg roles for an app and we each had the Gondola) was good - not overly memorable or outstanding. The best part was the pork egg rolls. Our bill was a little over $30, which was a bit high for the overall experience. All in all, it was okay but not memorable. With other options nearby, I don't think we'll return or recommend this place. read more

The young girl couldn't wait till I was finished to take my plate then the waitress asked if I wanted a box for my left overs. I told her the other girl already took my plate. What an unorganized, unpleasant place. There were 2 kids constantly pacing the small dining area stalking tables to swoop in and take stuff before customers were finished. The breakfast sandwich was great the meat done perfect and definitely worth the trip. Yet the jalapeño sausage gravy was okay in fact I would just recommend standard sausage gravy for this overpowered the salsa. A better compliment would be to add fresh diced jalapeños and green tomatoes and green onions for a better tasting sausage gravy. Only a suggestion. I hadn't visited this place in 20 odd years, we have talked about stopping but usually kept going downtown. We decided today to stop for lunch, it was worth the stop. We started with an appetizer of fried green beans. They came with a side of marinara and ranch dips. The beans were battered with a light seasoned breading, they tasted so good you really don't even need the dips. My wife had the Classic Burger with sharp cheddar cheese and all the toppings. The burgers come with chips for a side, but you can upgrade to fries or onion rings. She decided to choose the hand cut fries, she chose the hand cut. She said that the burger was great, I tried the fries and they were outstanding. I ordered the tuna salad on wheat and I had them make it in to a tuna melt with American cheese and had them upgrade the chips to hand battered onion rings. The tuna was very good, a little sweeter then I like, but I would order it again. The onion rings were awesome, the onion was sliced thick with I guess a thin beer batter. I would order a full order of them the next, the side was only 4 onion rings. The staff was great the young lady that seated us was professional and seated us within 10 minutes of arriving.
