Of course they sell brand, new, sewing machines, etc., here, but I specifically go because I have this vintage beauty and she needs to be taken care of. She needs special bobbins that you can't just buy on the Internet.. They also carry a wall of Metler threads. I recently brought my sewing machine here for maintenance when she broke down. It takes a couple of weeks to get your machine back, but they did excellent work. She's very clean now and I even got a little note from the mechanic how to maintenance my machine from home. There's a giant parking lot so parking is never a problem. Everyone is super friendly and I can imagine the classes here are fun.

I've actually driven past this store many times, but I've not had the opportunity or reason to stop in. But recently, I had a project and needed some specialty fabric. After calling several stores, I decided to stop by this one first. It's easy to get here, it's in Little Saigon, just off of Stockton and 47th/Elder Creek. Plenty of parking in a private lot with a few other stores in the plaza. We came on a mid-morning on a holiday Monday. There were just one set of customers checking out as we got here. I asked for the fabric from the boss lady who was measuring out fabric and she quickly asked a few questions and then led me to look at what they have and told me the price and after I agreed, she cut off the appropriate length and directed me to the front of the store to pay. Note that if you are buying less than $10 worth of merchandise, you might want to bring cash unless you don't mind getting charge a 50c credit card surcharge. The owner rang up my purchase and then we were on our way. The owner was pretty nice, he explained that he's who the store is named after and he's owned it for decades. They also speak Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin both) and Vietnamese, but their English was just fine too. In addition to tons of different kinds of fabric, they also sell "bling" you can add on like laces, jewels, special trims, and they have tons of buttons and zippers to choose from too. Overall, a great store to shop in for your fabric needs and I'm glad to shop and support a mom & pop local store.

About 21 years ago, I bought 9 beautiful dining room chairs made in Italy. The wood was cherry,…read moreand well-put together. Unfortunately, the company put some of the cheapest possible materials on the seats, and I knew from the beginning that they would have to be redone at some point. So I finally did a little research and got bids from three upholstering companies, one of which was California Upholstering. I decided to go with them because 1) their bid was the lowest by several hundred dollars and 2), more importantly, the photos on their Yelp reviews showed some of the most intricate and beautifully done pieces out of all of the companies I was reviewing, particularly that white tufted 'vintage sitting chair' with the fringes. I figured that for anyone that can do that, my chairs would be a piece of cake. Well, the Gods were smiling on me when I made that decision. Travis's shop is 26 miles from my house, but he drove out to pick up my seats (he unscrewed the seats so he didn't have to take the set of chairs themselves), and then brought them back just 5 days later. He did such a great job on them, and we are both so happy with his work. We had the chairs set up in the garage so that he could screw the seats back on, and we saw that even on the underside, the work was meticulous. My chairs look better than they ever have. And lest I forget, Travis is a sweetheart. The three of us ended up talking about everything from how his business was started, to our favorite classic cars. His company has been around for over 100 years (his grandfather bought it in the 1930s when it had been around for only 10 years), and Travis is one of the last true craftsmen around in this industry. I feel very privileged to have had him do this work for us, and am equally delighted to have met him. I don't think you can go wrong with this company.
