One day I wandered into Harbor Hair Design and had the great fortune of sitting in Kristi's chair for a trim. Before cutting my hair, Kristi asked me questions about how I liked to wear it, how I parted it, dried it, styled it... everything! She played with my hair a bit and then said "I know what to do!" She asked if I would be okay with some layers and I said, "Sure, let's try it!" While it took a few days to get used to my new cut and the blow drying techniques suggested by Kristi, I was never happier with my hair! It grew out really well, too! I came in yesterday for another trim and decided I had to write a review. Kristi is a great stylist; she's professional, kind, and fun as well! I wouldn't usually start off this harshly, but I would give zero stars if I could. I would like to start by saying that I had hair to the mid-point of my shoulder blades, and it took me three years to grow and train. I requested a men's haircut to the base of my neck to get it into a more manageable length while keeping the ability to style myself and texture. That's not what happened. My stylist's first cut was at the base of my skull, no confirmation on length or idea, just cut, which should have been a red flag. I proceeded to get a haircut that lobbed off, three years of growing in the matter of 30 minutes. By the end, my hair was uneven, unblended, and overall a mess. What's worse is that she left a clear 1 inch of hair not blended or even tied into (pictured). By the time I got home, I had realized how bad the cut was. I was at the acceptance stage of grief of a bad haircut and thought about dealing with it, but then I saw how poor the cut was and that I couldn't do anything with it. I cannot in good conscience recommend any guy with long hair going here.

Other shops around town might give lip-service to safety protocols, (one shop only put on masks when they saw me at the door, and when I looked inside, they had their dogs running loose in the shop. I walked away), but the folks at Color Box don't play: they sanitize in and out, use gloves when appropriate, disinfect between each customer and greet customers outside. Even with all that, they still manage to make you feel well-cared for. Oh: they offer free touch-ups and trims, to keep you looking spiffy. Time to make my next appointment...

Lets just say, I was lucky to have any hair at all when she was finished. The mop on top was beyond damaged; breaking, tangled and burnt. Shawn agreed to consult and came up with a repair plan. Fast forward to 2021... Mick and Shawn have really stepped up to the challenges of covid. The shop is super clean, products are excellent, and I can't recommend the Color Box enough. No matter your hair, Shawn can work his magic to make it the best it can be. I wish I had never left Whidbey, and if I do manage to make it back, I will definitely return to the Color Box! That is how long I have been connected to this fantastic "Beauty Shop." I mean seriously, how often do we get to refer to a salon as a "Beauty Shop" anymore? This place is classic yet the ladies spend many of their weekends going to the latest and greatest hair shows to keep up on the 'do's. They will make an attempt to do anything that you ask them to do, or give them a picture to replicate. They have done some fantastic 'do's for me for just a random weekday and New Year's Eve. And they are capable of much more than hair - they also have tanning services (though I don't endorse these anymore) and waxing, whatever you may need. My favorite part about this beauty shop is that when you walk in the one room salon, you feel like you're stepping into your Aunt's living room and chilling with the ladies. Gloria is at her limit of regular customers (including my mother who was lucky enough to get a slot a couple of years ago and goes in weekly) and Jody is acquiring quite a list! They treat these women with the utmost respect and treat them as if they're family. It's a great feeling to feel so comfortable and cared for when you go home. And I definitely, always make it a point to go to the Blue Bonnet at least twice when I do visit. How can you pass up a $15 wash, head massage, and full blow-dryed style? Shoot... Service has been acceptable and consistent and we like not having to drive too far for haircuts. We brought our daughters in for back to school haircuts this year and had a terrible experience. Instead of charging the child haircut price for our 8 and 10 year old children, they overcharged us by $25 and did not say a word about it. After we got home, we noticed that the receipt was for much more than we expected. We texted the stylist to politely ask if there was a mistake made. There was not, she intentionally charged a higher price without telling us. She became very defensive and told us that our kids have "Too much hair". Our family is not white and our children have an average amount of hair for their ethnicity, but yes, more hair than the average white child. She also told us that she doesn't usually cut childrens' hair. Why did she accept the appointment then? The haircuts were not even good and absolutely not worth the price we paid. The entire interaction left us feeling awful. This salon has lost 6 customers as a result of this experience.
