Another delicious discovery on what is quickly becoming my favourite street in the Market! That food is abundant in Ottawa, but GOOD Thai food is hard to come by. This place is terrific! Came here for my darling sister's birthday, and was pleasantly surprised by several things, the first being the decor. This place is so adorable - copper and gold wallpaper, beautiful artwork and super comfortable chairs. We were sat right in the middle, which was nice. There's sort of a main dining room, and a smaller section near the front of the restaurant. I think it would be a great spot to people watch! We were pleasantly greeted and promptly seated by our lovely server. We decided on sharing a few yummy things which was a good idea! We went with veggie springrolls, two soups, one sweet and sour, one spicy lemongrass, prawns, sweet and sour chicken, eggplant, and rice. I was pretty much in love with all of it. the pah thai might be the best I've had in Ottawa and the sweet and sour chicken was off the hooook! The pineapple was SO good! The portions weren't huge, which I enjoyed, and I left feeling pleasantly full but not stuffed. The prices were super reasonable, especially for the Market. Overall awesome experience, and I can't wait to head back to chow down on some more pad thai and try some more menu items (it's extensive and everything looked so good!). read more

I really like the Thai street food (ground chicken with basil) and the papaya salad wasn't bad, however my wife wasn't thrilled with her Tom yum soup as it didn't taste very authentic. I'm a big fan of Thai food. My wife and I came for Mantovani gelato a couple doors down on Thursday. After that amazing gelato we decided to try Thai. We ordered a chicken soup and chicken pad Thai. Alright get ready. The soup tasted like it had way too much acidity. My wife said they probably added apple cider vinegar. Anyway I finished it as I was hungry. The chicken inside was good but the taste of the broth was not good. Next came our main dish. It tasted strange, it was not fresh, it was not spicy, not even a hint of spice; and just bland and off. We were sharing the plate, and couldn't finish it due to the taste. The two stars I gave were not for the food. It was for the nice service and the nice ambiance. You guys seriously need to get your pad Thai down correct, otherwise you can't call yourself a true Thai restaurant. read more

Terrible experience. First 2 times we went were in the last week. Both times, got home and realized there was a mistake with our order. Disappointing as our first order cost $60. The 2nd time our order was wrong we went back and asked for the correct item. Turns out there is a mistake on their menu and the item we ordered doesn't actually exist. That's fine, that's not our fault or the servers fault. Instead of apologizing and giving us a refund, the server told us it was our fault. I asked for a refund, we were told they can't do refunds, I'd have to come back tomorrow, sometime in the morning and ask the manager (but couldn't say what time). No apologies for the error or inconvenience. I work 9-5 so I am not able to just show up at a random time in the morning and hope that the manager is in. We won't be trying this place for a third time. read more

My girlfriends and I went to Khao Thai on a recommendation. It was our first time at this particular thai place. I am sad to say that I was disappointed and probably won't be back. I will start with the positives, it is a cute restaurant in a good location in the market. The menu is very big and there were a lot of options to choose from, including an entire section dedicated to vegetarians. Here's the meh - the food was just okay. I have had better Thai food many times. The portions were just okay and they were extremely skimpy on the protein (in my case chicken and shrimp). We also shared a vegetarian spring roll and it was strange that the noodles inside of it were more like spaghetti noodles than vermicelli or rice noodles. Also, very chintzy on the tofu wrapped inside but very generous on the green lettuce, it was pretty much a lettuce wrap that you could dip in peanut sauce. To my surprise it was forks only, no chopsticks. The absolute worst part of the experience was the service. Just terrible service or should i say lack thereof. When we finished our dishes, about 20 minutes later the dishes were removed and then nobody came back for over an hour. This is not an exaggeration. We weren't offered coffee, tea or dessert. Nothing. Since it was girls night out we were all chatting and time passed but eventually one of my friends said she was going to investigate thinking that maybe we don't wait for the bill to the table, maybe pay at the door. She quickly returned to tell us that they would bring us the bill to the table. The bill finally came, it was all screwed up and had to be fixed. We finally paid and went on our way. We ate at Khao Thai Saturday even December 28th. We were six adults and three kids. Service. The service was frustratingly slow and a complete fiasco from the very start. Drinks took close to 15 minutes to arrive. Some drinks were forgotten and the server had to be reminded. Some of us were served food we didn't order. The server took it away and several minutes later made the same mistake again. What should have been and easy pleasant experience became most unpleasant. And after all the inept incompetent service the restaurant charged us each a 20% gratuity. I would have given one dollar. Nothing more. Walked in 45 minutes before 9:00 (closing time) on 7/29/19 and were told the kitchen was closed by the hostess . When I replied that I thought the closing time was 9:00 she rolled her eyes and said "let me see." The place had many customers still eating . It wasn't like we were "that table" keeping the entire staff hours after closing . After the attitude we received from the hostess we obviously turned off and told her not to bother . A restaurant my family were really happy with. We wanted something lighter after a full week of smoked meat, poutine and gravy. This place was perfect for us. We had a seafood salad, Tom yum soup and two different curries. The food was pretty decent. Im really happy that the two curries (one salmon in coconut red curry and the other one is a yellow curry with shrimp and pineapple) tastes quite different. It sounds obvious but being abroad more often you'd know this doesn't come for granted. They aren't that spicy but flavorful. The shrimp curry is a good balance of flavors. read more

My mom is visiting me from a small town in the middle of nowhere Alberta. In her town the international cuisine is just Chinese. I brought her to Khao Thai to treat her to a delicious cuisine. It was a culinary experience. I think the best way to explain the general sentiment of our lunch with this sentence: "meh that was alright". I have been 4 other times in the past couple of years and those times the food was significant better. I don't know if it was a change in kitchen staff or an off-day for them. For our lunch we had the spring roll, the coconut soup and the green curry. The coconut soup tasted the best out of all the dishes that we had ordered. The green curry was unusually filled with too much bamboo shoots which created a disbalance of flavour. The jasmine rice was tasty as well (however, at this level - it's rice. if your messing this up then this means you have other problems). I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here, but wouldn't mind trying it out again later on in the future. read more

Came across this place the other day with friends and had dinner. Even though it was a Friday night and we didn't have a reservation, the wait wasn't too long and we got a table within about fifteen minutes. The decor here is nice, the lighting is ambient and inspires closeness even with other people sitting close by, which was a nice touch. I usually judge my Thai restaurants based upon their curries or pad thai, as I'm not someone who is into stir fried food. I had the Gang Daeng with chicken and jasmine rice, which seems to be my first choice whenever I'm at a Thai restaurant. I just can't seem to *not* choose it regardless of where I'm at. I also ordered the chicken satay appetizer with peanut sauce and had some fried spring rolls as well. All the food was very good and up to my expectations, and I liked the heat level chosen for my curry as well (pretty hot, but not squirmy-hot). The service was excellent and attentive by staff, and the establishment is clean and well-run. I'd say this is one of the more romantic styled Thai restaurants in the area and would work well for a date in terms of surroundings. I didn't check out the restrooms that night as there was no need, but I'm going to assume they matched the niceness of the rest of the place. read more

My first impression of Khao Thai? Nice decor. Warm atmosphere. Friendly host/waitress. Excellent start. After perusing the menu, I was pleased to see they had a veggie section. I am a tofu fanatic, so I ordered the pad thai jae while my friend ordered a chicken curry with sticky rice; both of our meals came very quickly. Presentation is simple. I had a feeling that the portions would be small given the relative inexpensiveness of the items and the restaurant's location. Thankfully, I had a small appetite, but had I come on an empty stomach, I would not have skimped out on appetizers. As well, I was a touch disappointed that there was there was so little tofu in my dish. But c'est la vie. Khao Thai offers the most authentic delicious Thai food in Ottawa at very reasonable prices. The decor is also authentic and the charming owner Is Thai as are the Chef ,her staff and the servers. Ordered takeout and was extremely disappointed! Tom Yum Soup had way too much salt & vinegar. Pad Thai was way over cooked and soggy:( Khao Thai Tom Yum was also over cooked and not spicy:( Will not go back after putting $115 in the garbage. On their website they state that the Thai Ambassador has eaten there (I'm sure he either ate there once and never again, or they cooked something good for him at the expense of ever other patron). Lovely decor inside and good service. Tons of Thai food selection and food was fast! We had laarb kai, pad kee mow, and yum woon sen and they were all pretty good but so-so hence the 3-star rating. I came here last Thursday after visiting the Canadian Museum of Nature. The decor definitely drew me in to the restaurant. They had many paintings and sculptures on every wall and it created a very soothing atmosphere. Lights were dim and they also had candles lit for dinner. The food was decent, I've had better Thai food in the past. We ordered a chicken skewers as an appetizer and the green curry and glass noodles as entrees. The portions were fairly decent for the prices we were paying. I especially enjoyed the peanut-butter sauce that accompanied the chicken skewers. The curry also was done very well, as we could taste the coconut milk aftertaste of the curry. I wish that the curry came with rice; at this restaurant if you wanted rice you had to pay extra. Overall, a pleasant dining experience in Ottawa in Byward Market. Considering it is in downtown core, the prices aren't the worst that you could happen upon. read more

I was very impressed with this restaurant from the moment I walked in. I was warmly greeted and taken care of by the entire including the owner. I have been to Thailand, and eat Thai food often. This compares to the best I have had. The shrimp rolls were perfect, crispy, and free of grease. Nicely presented. I had a Muay Thai cocktail, which was unique and very refreshing after a warm day with basil and ginger. The Tom Kha Gai was the best I have ever had, creamy and thick coconut milk with perfect amounts of chicken and the right amount of spicy heat. I then had the Grapow with pork- just right heat and veggies so fresh I felt good about enjoying them all. All the time the staff took turns keeping me engaged with such genuine friendliness. The owner is a great business lady and a fine restaurateur, as well as a great conversationalist. Her sister the chef is a wizard! Great experience in an area with lots of restaurant choices- none nearly as good as this! Tip of the day- engage the staff and you will be pleasantly rewarded. We were walking around the first day we got there in the afternoon and was deciding on where to eat for dinner in August 2012. We were in the Byward Market area. That's where our hotel was. Luckily, we like to explore and came across this wonderful Thai option in Ottawa, Canada while on vacation! I'm so glad we found Khao Thai Restaurant because it is a cute little Thai restaurant! Awesome! Too bad when they asked what we wanted to drink, and I said Thai iced tea, the girl went to check and there wasn't any Thai iced tea! :( Anyways, I ordered my usual chicken pad thai! It was delicious! Very authentic Thai place. And the decor and ambiance was nice and relaxing. I liked the painting and other Asian decor they had there. It seems like no matter where we went in Canada, there was some sort of Thai influence in the area. I think that's pretty cool. Feels just like a NYC Thai restaurant! :) Also, the prices were similar to NYC so we were fine with the prices. However, for other people, they may not like the prices. Byward Market is a touristy area with a lot of students and business people and people from the Parliament Hill area coming to the area after work for happy hour. Great area to explore! read more
