I used to be a faithful Kiehl's customer during high school, up until my skin stopped agreeing with my daily regimen, since then I haven't been able to find any products that my skin agreed with except for the avocado eye cream. I'm slowly easing my way into using their staples hoping that I can go back to some of my favorite products. This led me to doing an in-store/curbside pickup some past and current faves so what better time than Black Friday. Anyways, my mom and I were immediately greeted as we walked in and I was helped by another employee. The order pickup process was practically seamless and friendly, BUT the packaging of the order was questionable (see picture for reference). I'd like to thank Amanda who not just rang me up at the register but really sparked conversation on what else I could use. I came in to get a replacement jar of my Age Defender face cream. Amanda looked up my account and let me know I had points to redeem (essentially cash) and I l ended up getting a vitamin c retinal that was on my Christmas list but nobody got me. I had tried this with my last set of samples and found out a whole bunch of my beautiful friends use this too! She then engaged on things I haven't tried and threw in a few samples. I have a routine and have made slight changes. I've been with Kiehl's since visiting their flagship in New York City over 13 years ago. I let nothing else touch my face! Although the hours have changed in the area I'm glad I found time to visit, I don't think I would have gotten this excellent experience online. I love this store and used to come here to buy a lot of things some years ago, during my acting phase. I was inspired after my sister gifted me with the best hand lotion ever! It's pricey, but worth it. They have a leave in conditioner that I like a lot and I've been using it lately. I had forgotten about it. But most recently I got the Magic Elixir for my scalp and my scalp loved it. The itching stopped. I'd buy more but their products have wheat protein or jojoba oil which I'm allergic to. I was greeted upon entry and the person assisting me helped me find something for my scalp and I appreciated it. I really appreciated the help. read more

My bf and I went in a few weeks ago curious about the products when we met Emily, who was so very friendly and knowledgeable about EVERYTHING. She gave us samples and we tried them out for two weeks. We fell in love with the calendula serum infused water cream, powerful strength line reducing concentrate, and the ferulic brew toner. We went in again today and Emily was there to help us. Great place for all of my skin care regimen needs and body products. I am in love with the Mens products that Kiehl's offer. This location is fairly small but packs a punch. Typically is always stocked and has all the items I am looking for when I need to re-stock or just buying gifts for someone else. When items are sold out or back ordered online this store typically has some type of inventory that keeps me intrigued. Items are a bit on the expensive side but I do not mind because "Quality" is my overall target and quality is what I get every-time. Sales Associate "Parysh" is THE BEST! I just can not get enough of her great customer service she provides. It is like a warm and friendly welcome that you do not want to leave her presence. I sometimes have more of a less friendly interaction with some of the associates at this store but she has enough spirit for everyone who works at this location HANDS DOWN! Energy and service is always impeccable. Parysh is an awesome associate who helps me to find the items I am in need of and also suggesting or recommending new products as they are introduced. She keeps me well informed of sales and other major events thats Kiehl's has. Remarkable employee, I wish all employees have the spirit you embody. I wish everyone at this location had a great sense of urgency to help its customers. I am a rewards Family member and it helps to receive great service you can be proud of. After all the amount of money I spend the service should be met or maybe its just me....Just makes me want to always go back and deal with that one associate who knows how to do a job well done :). On the downside there are always issues with my points being reflected in the system. At times I am always re-confirming my points with any sales associate as their computers are off and does not reflect all the points I have earned which can be very misleading at times. The manager here always does a great job with getting my points balance corrected and reflected immediately for present or future use. As far as the location itself, the location is very rough when it comes to the parking sector. I sometimes have trouble finding a park on a busy weekend or weekday afternoon as it is Berkeley and streets tend to fill up quickly. I came in asking about products to combat my holiday-stress-induced acne, and was instantly greeted and given a personalized skin analysis to help me identify which products would best suit my skin type! In less than 10 minutes, I was out the door with new products (and a handful of samples) in hand! So far, all the recommendations have been great and I will definitely be back in the future! I purchased the following items on this trip: 1) Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanse - cleared out my acne almost overnight. Gentle enough to use in the morning and evening (I have sensitive/dry skin and it did not dry me out!) 2) Calendula Herbal Extract Toner Alcohol Free - I was strongly resistant to purchasing a toner (I avoided toners in the past because they tend to have alcohol and instantly dry out my skin), however, Kiehl's toner is alcohol-free and left my skin feeling refreshed and balanced! Would buy again. 3) Currently sampling the Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque - it's a gentle mask that left my skin feeling smooth and radiant. So I am giving it a good 4/5. The only ding is the parking (which really can not be controlled since it's on 4th street). I went the Monday before Christmas 2019 to pick up a present for one of my friends. This location has a smaller inventory then the Kiehls in Pleasanton at Stoneridge. I was able to pick up cleanser and have it wrapped in one of their gift boxes (which are totally amazing btw and free). They ran out of the small sizes of the Facial Fuel (its the holiday season). The workers were totally friendly and when you check out, make sure you ask for some samples! read more

Product knowledge was on point with very helpful advice, especially for a novice person looking for skin care tips like me. The manager even overheard an issue I had with an online purchase and apologized for the experience and was extremely sincere and took ownership of a company issue. This amazing customer service was extended to everyone that walked in the door during my 30-45min visit. First off, I'd like to say that I have only received awesome customer service from this branch, hence me returning. In my experience, I was never pressured to make impulse purchases. Tara was my primary consultant, she is really nice, helpful, and funny. She is a licensed aesthetician and is very knowledgeable. Her customer service was also awesome, and I really appreciated her assistance. She made me feel comfortable, and I think that's super important, especially when discussing something like troubled skin and related insecurities. She's new, but it definitely didn't feel like it. She is experienced. I appreciate her insight on what I could do to improve my skin, which was welcomed info. Devin, the store manager was delightful. He is super knowledgeable about skincare and Kiehl's products. He was present in and out of my consultation with Tara to chime in and share bits of info to me and to Tara, giving her space to grow and develop on her own. I really appreciate Devin for his opinion on what would be best for my skin and what was more cost friendly to me. My consultation was quite lengthy as they were very thorough in finding what they thought was best for my skin, through explaining and letting me sample multiple products. While I was being helped, I also want to acknowledge that another employee, Tamaya, was super busy tending to the other customers that came in and making sure everything was taken care of in the business operations. This allowed for more concentrated attention on me. Tamaya really supported her colleagues. Thank you Tara, Devin, and Tamaya for making my experience super comfortable and personalized. I feel supported and encouraged by them. I would recommend this Kielh's location. P.S. I've been using Kiehls for years until now. They had a sale earlier this year and I placed an order. They decided to cancel the order and when I contacted them, they could not explain why they cancelled the order and would not honor the sale price if I placed a new order. This week I drove all the way to the Walnut Creek store to purchase a gift and they had did not have any in the store... during Christmas . They offered to make a gift set for me but I would have to purchase the products individually which would cost twice as much as a prepared gift set. I am done with Kiehls and their disregard for customers that keep their business running, If my experience is any indication of how they treat all customers, they will not be around for long. read more

I love Kiehl's products and the Ultra Facial Cream was a game changer but I've had two bad experiences with their sales people. The first time I came in to return an unused sunscreen simply because I found a different product from another store that suited me better. The man behind the counter was somewhat snarky and said something along the lines of "why would you ever want to return this?" NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS that's why. Customers don't appreciate being shamed, buddy. The second time was with a lady who constantly cut me off when I tried to ask a few questions and I mean CONSTANTLY. Her demeanor was also condescending and frankly her advice was lousy. Sorry, but I am not interested in applying two different serums and two different moisturizers in one sitting. This Kiehl's has a friendlier-than-average staff, which instills a bit more shopper loyalty in me. They are very generous with the samples, too! The products speak for themselves: simple, straightfoward, effective (and pricey). I was very happy to see they have a bottle recycling program, where you can bring in your empty Kiehl's products to recycle them, and earn points towards freebies. We have already collected 4 empties, and are 1 item away from a free product! Gotta say, the rice bran conditioning rinse is magic. FIRST AND FOREMOST: I've been shopping at Kiehl's on 4th Street for years. And I'm really sorry to say that--through no fault of this location in particular--the quality of their products have declined dramatically. THAT SAID: I loved their products. They made the very best shampoos and hair conditioners, excellent soaps and sublime fragrances based on essential oils. I actually made a huge point of visiting their East Village flagship store any time I was in NY, just to be there. Like a pilgrimage. And in all fairness, the folks at 4th Street have always been helpful and pleasant. BUT: No company in the history of companies has done more to lose my business. THE BEGINNING OF THE END: A proud and successful company that started in 1851 was purchased in 2000 by L'Oreal. Sure, profits have gone up by a gazillion percent. Because they're selling cheaply made products with high margins rather than exquisite products that are more expensive to make. FIRST WENT THE SHAMPOO: My favorite lecithin conditioning shampoo, which helped mitigate the harsh chlorine from swimming. BAM! Gone. THEN WENT MY SECOND FAVORITE SHAMPOO: It hurts to even mention it. THEN WENT THE ESSENTIAL OILS: Cleverly, they changed the name to "essence oils" as if we wouldn't notice the switch from luxurious, sensual fragrances to acrid, alcohol-based cheapness. Hear that? It's the sound of my heart breaking. One of those essential oils was my secret weapon. Women actually approached me at parties wanting to make out just because I smelled so good. I have about two drops of the original oil in hiding, waiting for just the right occasion, and a couple tubes of the other stuff which I bought out of desperation. *sigh* THEN WENT THE SCENTED SOAPS: All replaced with crappy, ridiculous scents like "orange flower and lychee" and "nashi blossom and pink grapefruit." Pisses me off just to think about it. Nashi blossom. WTF THEN WENT THE CONDITIONER: This lovely, thick stuff I used as a leave-in. WHAT'S LEFT FOR ME? Eh ... their shaving stuff is OK and I still like their Creme de Corps lotion. But screw that! I NOW USE MALIN+GOETZ ... ... and Dr. Bronner's and LUSH. They're organic, sustainably made and marketed, pro-social and use all-natural ingredients. Take that you creepy bastards. I hope you're happy with your gazillion bucks in revenue and hundreds of locations. I'M OUT. read more

A young man greeted me as soon as I walked into the store and minute later, came by and started asking me about my skin. I wasn't intending to buy anything, but who doesn't love new skin care products? He had me sit down and began assessing and consulting me about my skin. I told him I was on the dryer side, so he used a machine which you place against your face and it reads your hydration levels. How cool! He then proceeded to recommend a routine for me. What I loved about his salesmanship was he wasn't trying to push products on me, he was simply stating which products would work best for my skin and which order to use them in. He suggested a sunscreen for me and I pointed out the chemical ingredients, and he immediately brought out a mineral sunscreen. This guy was obviously knowledgable about Kiehl's products, and I was impressed. So, I bought the Ultra Cream Moisturizer and the Clearly Corrective serum for my sun spots. He also gave me Midnight Recovery oil samples (I didn't even need to ask), and let me tell you. I've been using these products for a week and I have noticed a DRAMATIC difference in the texture of my skin. My skin feels extremely soft, clear, and feels hydrated. I also love how potent these products are as a little goes a long way. I can tell these purchases are going to last months. I'm going back to purchase midnight recovery and stopping by Sephora to return my previous skin care oils. Compared to other high-end products, I genuinely think these are 100% worth your money. read more

That was until this weekend when I guess my Cali BFF decided to have a face intervention with me. After handing me a mirror in MAC and discussing with me that we needed to do something about my blackheads around my nose and talking about scheduling a facial (something that I've never had) and all the benefits to it, we opted for the 2nd best quickie. Gotta luv real friends who really love you :) Before I knew it, she was dragging me into Kiehl's and discussing my blackheads with the girl who worked there. Before I knew it, I was at a mirror and a sink trying some products. And just like that, I instantly saw a few go down the drain. Though I still had much to work with, I was convinced I had to get some samples. I also struggle with dry skin so I opted to get a sample of their face moisturizer. I bought a couple of hair products via their website (prior to the store opening in Berkeley) and wasn't thrilled. I now see that Kiehl's is better as a try-before-you-buy place. A website description of an item is one thing; being able to open a bottle, take a sniff, and actually feel a product's consistency is another. Once inside the store, there seems to be a ton of options for skin and hair. I find that I get a little caught up in the sheer selection and start thinking that I probably need a new hair care system, a new skin care system, etc. But the sales associates are friendly and helpful in guiding you towards the items that will work for you. My two can't-go-wrong products: the Supremely Gentle Eye Make-up Remover (really gets ALL my mascara off) and the Original Musk Eau de Toilette Spray (not like the girly Jovan Musk of my middle school days, but a gender-neutral, kinda stinky [in a good way] scent that I've completely fallen in love with). Downside: parking on 4th Street can be an adventure in how far you'll let a yuppie (if one can still use that term) bend you before you break. read more

I walked into the store the other day at odds with my current face products. My face was dry and my eyes hurt from overly strong products. I have to tell you that Parysh came to my rescue. She first sent me home with samples and said use these, tell me what you think and if they work, come back. No pressure, just extremely supportive and empathetic. All I can say is WOW. I came here today to get a $10 credit because they were offering a $30 credit for after Christmas vs. a $20 credit coupon. I had 2 items that I didn't even open, so I decided I mine as well get a credit for my purchase...simple, right? Wrong. I have been to many Kiehl's locations before and have always received great service. I walk into this store and Rachel approached me and I advised her that I want to get a $10 credit. She said I can not get the offer, so I said I will just return and repurchase and she said I can't do that either. She said she received e-mails that we can not return or exchange. So, I left. While walking around 4th St., I told myself it doesn't state anywhere on the receipt I can not return. So, I proceeded back to the store and when she saw me coming, she walked to the back. I spoke to someone at the counter and said I just like to return the products. I told her I wanted to take advantage of the $30 coupon and said Rachel advised I could not, but said there is nothing on the receipt I can not return. Rachel comes out from the back and since I had a receipt (btw, I showed her the receipt the first time I wwalked in), they said I can return it and exchange it. She said she asked her manager after I left if I was able to return. I told her that she should have asked her manager when I was in the store earlier and not until I left. She said there were a lot of emails. I advised her it is not on the receipt...told her they should put a disclaimer or final sale if they didn't want customers to exchange or return based on their promo. It was the worst customer experience I had. She was trying to be nice to me afterwards, but you know, it is your company that has this offer and u should honor it. Maybe next time, have your company offer the $30 coupon before Christmas and then $20 after Christmas....just saying. I won't be back at this store and going to write to the Corporate office in regards to my experience and that additional training needs to be done at this location. read more

Maria on the phone was kind enough to welcome me and exchange it, when I came into the store, I was assisted by Grace for my transaction. She spent a Better half of 30mins explaining product, my concerns, and even tested my skin for hydration and oil production. I had what I'll call an interesting experience at the Kiehl's store on 4th today. I should start by saying that I don't live in Berkeley, but this location (which is about 25 minutes from my home) is the closest Kiehl's store to me. That said, when I called the Kiehl's customer service number to see if I could exchange a product I bought online at one of their storefronts, and was given the green light, I decided to make the drive over to 4th Street to do just that. Before doing so, though, I called the shop to be extra sure that an exchange would be possible. At first the lady on the phone said it wouldn't be possible since I no longer had the box and printed receipt that came with my original order. I let her know that the Kiehl's rep that I spoke with on the phone said that wouldn't be an issue, since I have electronic proof of my purchase. After telling the employee this, she said it would be fine and then hung up without another word. Flash forward to when I got there. I took the product out to hand to the lady (the same one I spoke with on the phone) and she immediately said "no, that's part of a kit. We don't sell that individually." To which I responded, "I bought it as an individual product online." She muttered something and then said she'd get the manager. A few minutes later the manager came out. As soon as he saw the product I was exchanging he said, "that is part of a kit." I just want to stop for a second here to say that, to a customer, these words sound like: we're on to you and know that that's actually part of a kit, so don't think you can return it and swindle us. Not a great first impression. I tried to calmly explain that the product is sold individually online, and that I called ahead to make sure this exchange would be possible. Anyway, long story (somewhat) short: I did get the exchange and the manager was kind and helpful after the first interaction. My first interactions (first on the phone and then with both employees in the store) left something to be desired, however. 3 stars because I did get what I had gone in for, and the manager was nice. read more

I am a big fan of Kiehl's. And now they are in Berkeley, I don't have to drive thru the tunnel to Walnut Creek. I enjoy their face washes, right now I am in love with the Blue Algae line. But I also love their moisturizer, the sodium pca one, or whatever it's called. They will give you samples of whatever you want to try, which is great, because you aren't bullied in to buying something that you aren't quite sure of. I had such a great time I ended up purchasing an oil cleanser as well. Grace was a terrific salesperson and never pushed any products on me. Which I really appreciated because I have a drawerful of expensive products that I don't use after a few tries. She did tell me that they have very good return policy if I'm not satisfied. I just had the best customer service by a lovely rep named Jasmine. I called ahead and she checked inventory for the item I needed. Without asking she held one aside for me and when I arrived she was bright, kind and so so joyous! It was a refreshing experience during these stressful Covid times - the store was also great with doors open, social distance signs, sneeze guards for the cash register and masks. I've been coming to this store for a few years now, and have always had a very pleasant experience - but this past year I've had even more of a positive experience receiving help from Grace. She has been so wonderful in helping me really build out my skincare routine to best fit my skin type and issues and maximize how my skin looks and feels! She's incredibly knowledgable about how skin functions and she's really educated me in addition to helping me find the best steps and products to use. I've been really happy with my Kiehls regimen after working with her and she's super helpful and so nice to chat with every time I come in and need something. After using Mario Badescu for years (and before that nothing more than neutrogena), I began having trouble with my skin. Part of it was going over the mark of 35 years old and changing hormones, part of it was a change of climate, and finally the oil in my skin keeping me younger looking was getting the better of me. I was reluctant at first to switch to something new, but the samples eased me into the process of changing over. While I often find their products to contain a sticker shock, I can say that I use less of their products because of the coverage and quality they provide. This is the only thing that takes care of the oil and yet still moisturizes. One thing people who "immediately break out omg!!! wtf!!!!!?!?!?!!" forget is that it takes a couple of weeks as you begin a new regime. At this point, I have the least problem and the clearest skin when I use the blue algae line and the blue moisturizer. I've now added to the mix the overnight biologic peel and my skin (after about a month of all products in unison) looks better than it has in years. While people might complain that there are "unnatural" products in these formulae, they may not recognize that it's called chemistry, which takes natural products and combines them to create a variety of compounds. It's great to stick carrot lotions and bread on your face if your skin can take it but this doesn't work for everyone. Also, once you pass a certain age, you simply have increased issues. It's a low pressure sales environment and the East Bay store has a great staff. But like all service and skin products, your mileage may vary. read more
