Love it! I really don't think I can live without this place. Every time I go (& I am there every two months at least) they are kind and helpful. Always willing to talk to me and give me suggestions. I love their products and all the samples. Without this place my skin would be a sad, sad thing. Yay! Their return policy is amazing and really helps me not feel tied to a product just because I bought it. Also--their frequent buyer/points system is fantastic! I have been using Kiehls products for years, but I usually purchase on line. The other day I happened to be in the 4th street area and decided to stop and replenish. I walked in, knew exactly want I wanted, grabbed it and proceeded to the register. There was one person working the register and she was helping a customer. I waited for about 7mins. and was getting annoyed that no one even greeted me or said hello. Then a customer that was being helped by a sale person on the floor, comes up and cuts in front of me, gives me this snide uppity look and proceeds to get helped first. The sales person helping her doesn't even bother to say "I'll be right with you" or anything. I got more of a "If I ignore him maybe he'll leave vibe". I left with out making a purchase, and the only time I got greeted was when I returned the products to the shelf, and the guy knew I was pissed. You all should be nice and helpful to all people that walk in the store, not just the rich ones. read more

Absolutely wonderful Kiehl's store! It is nestled in the main Fourth Street shopping area and their staff is exceptional! We have been buying all our Kiehl's needs from this store for several years now and have gotten to know the manager, Maria Shalita. She is not only knowledgeable on everything Kiehl's but has always hired very good young people for her staff. Examples: she always welcomes us warmly! When a sale is coming up, she leaves calls to let us know so we don't miss something she knows we need! She is always good for ideas about new samples to try knowing our likes and dislikes without having to be reminded! Her warmth and welcoming nature extends to all her staff. Even if Maria is not in the store when we go, we ask her staff about her whereabouts and then they treat us very well. I've noticed that Kiehl's occasionally offers online deals that are slightly better than in their stores but we never choose the click-to-deliver option. This is not to say we always go to the store as Maria has often taken our orders over the phone, knows our account and mails them with special samples to our doorstep ... just like online but with human caring for detail. Guess I didn't have any luck today with the samples. I wanted to sample their pineapple papaya scrub but the lady said she didn't have any packaged samples. Since she was already giving me her "money back guarantee" speech, I didn't even bother asking if she could put some in a little pot for me. Sometimes you don't want to go through the inconvenience of driving to their store and putting up with parking only to return a product that you didn't like. That's what samples are suppose to be for! read more

Went into Kiehl's today to buy a $50 gift card. Three employees working, three customers including me in the store. I'm waiting at the register (one employee at each register) for about 10 minutes. There is no greeting, no "be right with you," nothing. I'm starting to get really frustrated (and I have somewhere I need to be) and then the third employee walks up to the register with a fourth customer and looks at me awkwardly as she's trying to cut her customer into line in front of me and knows I've been waiting and am frustrated. Meanwhile the two cashiers are chatting away with the two customers who are currently being rung up (which for some reason is taking over 10 minutes?). I'm overhearing a conversation about someone's pet snake being pregnant and realizing this wait could go on for another 10 minutes if I continue to stand there. I'm all about customer service (I'm actually a DM in retail myself) but those 20 minute chats shouldn't be happening when there's a line of people waiting. Finally a register opens up, the employee tells the other employee that I was next and the first employee, who was trying to cut her customer into line, says "Can I get you something?" I'm thinking, "Why, no, no you can't, I just delight in waiting in lines all day for no reason." I say, "I'd like to purchase a $50 gift card." The employee looks confused and says, "Oh ok, let me try to find one." She fumbles around. The first register person finishes with her customer, turns to me and the other woman waiting and says, "This register is broken." Awesome. I am really quite done at this point, look at the cashier and say, "I've been waiting quite a while and it looks like it will be a while before I am helped. I was going to buy a $50 gift card but I will go next door to Aveda to get one." The staff of Kiehl's said not a word and looked dumbfounded. The other customer waiting in line then said, "I'm leaving too." She joined me in leaving the store. I walked next door where my entire transaction at Aveda took 2 minutes and the sales person actually apologized when I told her what happened at Kiehl's. If anyone from Kiehl's reads this, maybe you should have your people head over to Aveda to see what great customer service is. While I like Kiehl's products, customer service is a huge part of where I (and many other customers) choose to shop. Get it together! read more

I am writing this review because I recently visited this Kiehls and was disrespected and humiliated. I had only been here a few times before but I've never encountered this type of situation. I am an Asian American woman and completely fluent in the English language but I'm guessing the manager there did not think so just by looking at me. She practically pushed one of her Asian employees down my throat during my visit, and both I and her employee were very shocked and confused as to why she would assume I couldn't speak English. It was the most awkward situation of blatant discrimination I've ever encountered. My friend suggested we just leave, but the young lady (that was forced to help me) was very sweet and polite so we continued to purchase. I couldn't believe as I was walking out I noticed the managers picture plastered on the wall, and could not imagine why this company would choose her to be one of their ambassadors. Kiehl's is great. You can get samples of most if not all of the their products. The staff is wonderful. All of them always greet you with a big hello and a smile. They are dog friendly and all of the products I have used are great. Try their pear body wash, lotion and oil. Smells heavenly. I am surprised at a couple of the negative reviews though because all of their salespeople are warm and friendly and always offer me samples. Their samples are not small either. read more

Terrible service from an increasingly terrible store. This last time some clerk in a wannabe lab coat (who I'm pretty sure has been working this store for many years) tried to upsell me on a huge jar when I specifically wanted the smaller container. When I asked him for a sample of another product he said they don't have small containers of it... What? That's what Kiehls is known for! Providing samples of crap you don't need since 1851. Whatever happened to the tiny sample tubes that you fill on demand? The rude clerk then tried to push other unwanted products and a "skin health check" on me (for cancerous moles-right? Because wearing a "lab coat" makes you scientific), but the one thing that would have made me leave a happy customer, and spend more, he could not do. I don't know if this is just one bad employee or a poorly run store but I will not be buying from this company ever again. And frankly, the last couple times I've been in this store I noted increasingly pushy and rude sales people. There's plenty of other skincare suppliers out there with better products and much better customer service. read more

A friend of mine recommended Kiehl's skin care products but was not sure if they tested any of the ingredients on animals. I went into the Berkeley store to inquire about some of the recommended products and, after a lengthy visit with the sales person, I asked it their products were tested on animals. He replied with "I don't think so, but let me make sure." He turned to ask the store manager and she said, without hesitation, that their products were NOT tested on animals. Judging by her dismissive attitude, I decided to do a little research and found out that they DO test some of the ingredients on animals. When I called the store to express my objection to giving false information to their customers, the woman on the phone clarified "it's a matter of opinion because only some of the ingredients are tested on animals and some are not."
