This was a great fond for us. We have never been on this island. Literally 3 minutes from Volcano Natl Park. We stayed in Rm 9. Convenient path to car and hot tub. We used the hot tub 2x and it was perfect temp. I thought it was crazy for a gas fireplace in room. We used it 3x because it was rainy here. Staff was helpful by providing us ice and utensils and glasses that we could leave in room. They don't want you drinking the water so they provide a 5 gal jug of water. Good to bathe in but not drink. They provided a small fridge, coffee maker, toiletries. The room was big enough that they could have added a coffee table by fireplace to set your drinks on. No TV but we had our own electronics. WiFi was on point. Ample parking. They don't do daily room service unless you ask. The sound of the birds at night is amazing. They communicate right away via text for anything you need. I would definitely stay here again. read more

Hotel was excellent, we stayed in the cottage. Three adult humans with island hopping luggage was a stretch for this quaint space. The fireplace and heated towel rack were lifesavers, warning and drying all the damp things. The windows were gorgeous and the porch couch was perfect for coffee. The fold out couch was the sort with an uncomfortable bar so maybe best for a little one. Plan ahead for dinner, while good, the restaurant was very pricey. The small fridge kept a few things cold for us, but a toaster would have been very welcome in the morning. read more

This was my second time to eat here. The first was at brunch, which was very good, and excellent coffee. This time was for my husbands Birthday. The server was really wonderful. At check-in we were told that reservations were full, therefore we would need to be finished with our meal in 1.5 hours, which I thought was unique. I ordered the ribeye, which was very good, the loaded potato was just warm, same as the mixed vegetables. The banana cake was good. My husband ordered the catch of the day, Red Snapper. He enjoyed his meal, and chocolate cake after. The restaurant is very quaint, and lovely. I would have given 5 stars if the potato and vegetables were hot. Regardless, I would recommend dining here, and visit the gardens afterward if possible. read more

Some of the bread was over browned - black edges (not a fan) but there were some good pieces - Calimari (steak) looked like breaded chicken but it was pretty good with the capers. - Brussels cooked well, first veggies I've seen on this trip that wasn't potato salad. Entrees: Bf had the pork with pineapple salsa which I really really really liked. Pork was cooked perfectly and I liked the addition of the pineapple salsa. Lamb and didn't really care for it. It was too charred so all I got was that char flavor with lamb. The ratatouille just tasted like veggies with Italian seasoning (is this what ratatouille is? besides the movie I've never had this in my life). But really didn't care for MY dish but everything was really tasty. Desserts: Raspberry mousse - I love the contrast of the bittersweet chocolate & sweet slightly tart raspberry. One of my favorite combos. Lilikoi meringue tart - presentation great, didn't care for meringue. The lilikoi cake was delish devil's cake - average chocolate dessert, not too sweet which was good Overall, I'd come back. Located very close to volcano national park. The very lodge-y decor is nice and the staff is was friendly, but the food was just OK for the price. When we came, it almost had the vibe of those restaurants next to nursing homes, homey but mediocre food. I think our fault was ordering the German sausage platter which was way overpriced for serving one as a hotdog. The risotto was creamy but too much cheese and again, steep price point. We live in Volcano and had only eaten here a few times. We were here Thursday, December 10 for a date night. We haven't eaten out much since March due to COVID. The menu was smaller than before, we were hoping for steak. While looking at the menu we realized the one thing we haven't had in 9 months is fried chicken. Our wait for our meal was longer than we anticipated but the clean restaurant filled with so many other couples obviously trying to enjoy a date night out was refreshing. I think the restaurant was much busier than planned. The tables were spread out more than before COVID but that's how it is everywhere. Now to the food. Simple comfort food is much more difficult to execute well than elaborate food. We discussed how a simple "fried chicken" is anything but simple if you are trying to execute fresh food that isn't frozen. We both have cooked dishes outside our wheelhouse while COVID has been going on. In fact I never cooked prior to COVID lockdowns. Now I can make a mindblowing buttermilk biscuit from scratch in less than 20 minutes. My hubby and I have challenged each other for fun. Now, back to our fried chicken for 2... The fried chicken for 2 was AMAZING. The chicken was perfect. Not overcooked at all. The cajun potatoes were delicious. The mac and cheese? Omg! I wanted to bath in it!! The noodles were al dente, the cheesy sauce was so decadent the cheesy goodness stretched across the table to my mouth. Thick stretchy cheese, omg! My hubby only got 2 bites and I told him he was alone with his cajun potatoes (those were delicious as well). The cornbread was really good as well. I would prefer my bread a little warm with butter but it was really good. I know bad meals can happen. For all the times I've started and visited the volcano area I never tried any other places. I have a favorite spot, and unfortunately they got rid of that dish so I was at a loss. Thankfully to all the yelpers this place has great reviews and pictures. Getting me to try a new place is really based off pictures and captions, so thank you everyone for your reviews. Highly advise making a reservation, I did and they had very few takes available at 6pm. The restaurant is quite small which is nice because you are able to enjoy your meal with little noise distraction. The menu is great, various choices for everyone. Wine list is decent, but not for my pallet, however that isn't the fault of the restaurant. Each dish was amazing, I tried crab cakes for the first time which was amazing. Definitely went out of my comfort zone and tried the Safari Schnitzel. Did not expect the taste at all and it was amazing, lightly breaded, sauce great and veggies perfect. The Lamb Provencal was ok for me, but lamb I feel is by person and I have a favorite so it's hard to compare to it. Nevertheless the plates were empty by the end. They also have amazing in house baked bread, I don't know what it is but they are amazing and I wish other restaurants would get the recipe. Great place for a date night as there are takes by the fire place, families, and able to sit larger parties. We stayed a night at the Kilauea Lodge. It was the perfect location to explore the national park during the day and a short drive to see Halemaumau Crater at night and the amazing star show. The stay included a parking stall and complimentary breakfast. The accommodations are clean and comfy. The electric fireplace didn't provide enough heat to warm up the room. It gets pretty cold in Volcano, so it's a good thing that we packed sweatpants and sweatshirts. As other Yelpers have mentioned, there aren't too many places to dine at in Volcano. We ate at the Ohelo Cafe. We didn't have reservations, so it was a 25 minute wait outside on the lanai. Did I mention that it gets cold in Volcano at night? Brrr..... Ohelo Cafe looked (on Yelp) like the nicest restaurant in the area. Maybe we should have tried the dinner menu at the Lodge. Except for one lone koki frog, it was very quiet at night. Located in Volcano town, about 12 minutes away from Jagger museum/Halemaumau crater, is a cute little lodge. We ate at the lodge about 15 years ago and vowed that we would come back to stay the next time we were in the area. LODGE So in August 2017 we stayed overnight here for 1 night in the Hideaway, which is a cottage house with a living room, kitchen and bedroom. There are different rooms to choose from so not all of the "rooms" are as big as the one we stayed in. We had a walk in closet, which was big enough to open the fold out bed for my daughter to sleep in. There were also two futon mattresses which we opened in the living room. This place could sleep 5 ppl very comfortably. We even used the fireplace (in August) which is weird because the entire rest of Hawaii is way too hot....I forget that the difference in elevation makes a huge difference, it was very cool at night even in the summer. There is a hot tub behind the main house (behind the lodge restaurant) which was very nice after a long day of driving from Kona. One weird thing is because they are in the catchment system, you can not drink the tap water. You must use the bottled water, which was provided in the room we stayed in. RESTAURANT We had dinner (use open table reservations! It's a small place and probably won't have walk in space) which was great but I think the breakfasts really are the superstars. Ours was included with the room. The food was fabulous, and just remember you aren't exactly in the middle of foodie heaven, you are in the middle of a volcano. Because there aren't many guests here, it is quiet and a nice little getaway. We stayed at Volcano House before and the only advantage to that one is you wake up and you see the volcano out your window. Here you wake up in the middle of a rainforest. read more

My family took my hubby here for his birthday. It was the first time I've been here even though I grew up two towns away. The restaurant is rustic and intimate, with open beams and a fireplace and sofa. It's a small dining area that looks to fit fifty people max, but gives enough space between tables to hold private conversations. I heard the menu changes every night, when we came the specials was lobster and prime rib. I got the leg of antelope, something I never ate before and my hubby got the prime rib. The rest of my family ordered the Tuscany chicken and German sausage plate, while the younger generation ordered from the keiki menu. The entrees come with soup or garden salad and complimentary bread. The bread was soft and homemade. The soup of the day was something kind of curry coconut soup, it was dang tasty. I felt the soup itself could be my meal. I expected my entree to be gamey, but it wasn't. It was soft and tender and reminiscent of filet mignon. Mash potatoes was homemade and I couldn't stop eating the side of beans. My hubby loved his prime rib, said it was cooked perfect. My family also enjoyed their meals. For dessert, we picked from a tray of desserts. My husband picked the blueberry cobbler while I chose the chocolate orange ganache cake. The staff came by to sing happy birthday to my hubby. The blueberry cobbler was awesome, warm with just the right amount of sweetness. The cake was delicious, with chocolate and orange flavor intertwined into divineness. We had to wait a while for our entrees, but the wait was worth it. I had the fish of the day (Ahi tuna) cooked medium. It was the best fish I had ever had in a restaurant. My bride, ordered the chicken and risotto and it was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The cost of the meal was steep, but the meal was worth every cent. My goodness! Born and raised on the big island. Its been years since I've moved away from the big island but I visit regularly and had absolutely no idea this place existed. Tucked away in the forests of the Volcano area is Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant. It started out as a YMCA in the early 1900's as it served as a place to stay for the military and groups visiting from afar. The den area surrounding the dining room is a testament to the many guests from around the globe as their metal emblems at mounted on the fireplace mantel and a binder holding many greetings date back to 1920.... simply amazing and a book by Greg Lewis, outdated copyright of photos of the volcano park, eruptions sits on the coffee table. The food ? Eggs Benedict, poached to absolute perfection, "local volcano" style omelette filled with local grown vegetables, pastrami sandwich - delightful, oh and let me not forget to acknowledge the bar for the perfect tasting lilikoi (passion fruit) margarita. A casual homey atmosphere, den area filled with almost a hundred years of history and great food and definitely, a hidden gem is my new "place to go" when visiting the big island (east and south side) read more

Pricey dinner but overall charming! As others mentioned, the lodge/restaurant is close to the Volcanoes National Park and it worked out perfectly that we were able to go see the lava glow after we finished our dinner. We made reservations because we'd heard that there might be a line. We ordered: -seafood pasta, rabbit soups, prime rib stuffed with beef and mushrooms and deep-fried (as good as it sounds), ahi tuna, eggplant on pasta. -The seafood pasta was good, not too creamy with chunks of shrimp, ahi tuna, and capers scattered throughout. -The prime rib stuffed with beef was amazing and very unique! -Rabbit stew was hearty and came with potatoes and carrots. Very attentive service and the waitresses were awesome, filled all of our glasses within 5 minutes of me taking a drink (just kidding, but not really) and answered all of our questions. They also did the small little extras like making a little nene bird out of the foil to hold our leftover bread! The Food Every single dish was a 10. That includes the delicious beet with beef broth soup (I hate beets but I couldn't stop drinking the soup!), and the side salad with berry vinagriette was delicious! We had the Brie with bread and apple/mango salsa for appetizer. I can't stop thinking about it! It was so good! For main dish, we had the leg of antelope and the catch of the day-Ono with a lemon caprese sauce. They were both superb. The antelope was very interesting. Sort of a chewiness to it, with a hint of gamey flavor. The sauce they made fits perfectly with it. Oh, and the portion sizes are generous, so be prepared to bring some home! Great value for your money! The Ambience Absolutely amazing. Love the old lodge feel. Blends perfectly with the cold weather outside. The table decorations were appropriate and ornate. Kilauea Lodge: probably the only place in Hawai'i that calls itself a lodge and sort of feels like one, too. Kilauea Lodge is way out of any town here on the Big Island. Nestled up on pretty much the top of Kilauea volcano. Just off of the highway and hidden back in the trees. When you pull into the circular driveway, it almost feels like you're arriving someplace totally removed from everything else. It is a very cool setting, to say the least. I've only ever come to Kilauea Lodge for dinner, so I'm most used to walking into a warmly lit dining room with the fireplace burning off to the side. It's the best in the Winter when it actually is very chilly (by our standards) up on the mountain. Upon arrival, you'll more often than not be seated very quickly, with service to match. The servers are very attentive to your needs and very knowledgable when it comes to their ever-changing menu. Which is saying something, as they always have very unique dishes that you'll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else on the island. As unique as the dishes they serve are, I've never had one that I didn't very much enjoy. Everything from their appetizers to their desserts are good. Heck, even the drinks they serve are nice. If I were to recommend one dish that is probably my favorite thing to order (if it's on the menu at the time), I would say that you have to try the beef paupiettes. It's not the most exotic dish you could get at Kilauea Lodge, but it never fails to be absolutely delicious. All things considered, Kilauea Lodge is absolutely one of the very best places you can come to on the Big Island. If you're a tourist or a local, your time would be well-spent. And if you come in the evening, you can even drive a short ways up the road to check out the lava glow in the national park, after your meal. read more

We cannot say enough about our wonderful experience here. From our initial arrival until we returned the room key, everyone was super nice, professional and went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed. Volcano itself is delightful. Such a contrast to other towns outside national parks that we've visited (e.g., gatlinburg, Tennessee; Estes park, Colorado, etc). The town is chill and has several local galleries and craft stores. It's location just two miles from the park entrance also makes it easy to return after dark to see the glow of the volcano. A must see. We had our folding Bike Friday's with us, which made for great explorations. Traffic is light and respectful. We definitely recommend staying here and will do so again on our next trip to the Big Island. read more

The Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant has one large, main dining room with large, vaulted ceilings, and nice decorations. It used to be a YMCA actually. Their simple menu includes a Hawaiian take on many breakfast classics. I enjoyed a breakfast of two eggs with country potatoes and spam. It was tasty. Eggs and potatoes were served a little cold, unfortunately. Orange juice was overpriced and very small, maybe 6 ounces or less. My wife enjoyed an omelette. Later in our trip, we had dinner at the Kilauea Lodge. For dinner I had a New York Steak and asked that they cook it medium rare. Sadly, the steak was surprisingly tough and hard to chew. My sides, mashed potatoes and veggies were good. Homemade bread was very dry. Service and kitchen were very slow. Menu was expensive. Unfortunately there aren't many restaurant options in Volcano Village, so this might be one of the better restaurants around, but it's not without it's faults. read more

We came here with reservations for breakfast and stood at the front waiting for someone to greet us or anything and it literally took 5 mins for the host to pop out of the kitchen to greet and seat us. That should have been our firat clue as to what to expect here. We ordered the corned beef hash "steam vent", the french toast, an omelet, and eggs, ham, and toast. The french toast was good, the omelet was nice and cheesy, the eggs plate were ordered over easy, but came out over medium (barely any run in the yolk), and the corned beef hash was probably the most weird - it was almost like crumbly overcooked with very little flavor. Food aside, we had to wait for over 10 minutes after they cleared our table to waive down anyone to give us the bill. Overall, I have definitely had better and will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone. read more

Might be our best dining experience on the big island! We arrived after hiking the volcano and our GyPSy app tour guide suggested the town of Volcano as a good spot for food. We drove by 4-5 restaurants and this place looked inviting so we stopped in. I ordered a burger and my wife ordered a carne asada salad. My burger was outstanding. It was a perfect medium with a nice crust sealing in juices. Bun and veggies were perfect and created a burger experience I haven't had anywhere else on the island. The carne asada salad was also fantastic. The marinade on the meat imparted an incredible flavor. We were expecting a decent meal, but we're pleasantly surprised how we were blown away.
