I had an urgent issue with a male cat having a UTI. Spent a few hours calling multiple vets, some fully booked for weeks, another wanting to charge me $200. emergency fee during office hours, another wanted me to drop off in early AM and pick up at 5 PM, not practical when we live an hour and a half away, 2 others didn't return phone calls until 36 hours later. (The first one I called and I was waiting for a return call, but was on vacation though it was never in originao phone message).It was exasperating!!! Kilauea Vet understood the urgency and challenges I was facing and prescribed the meds for me to pick up, true angels who put the animal's welfare first . I am recently moved and found this vet. Visited a couple of times. Vet seems like to add whatever vaccine, whatever tests to make her money. Also she seems in the age of already retired. I barely hear what she is trying to say and can't trust what she says other than she wanted to increase bill amounts. This place is amazingly tiny and always crowded with mosquitoes. I prefer to bring my dog to a decent place where provides enough space and clean environment in consideration of the amount they charge and wait time to see vet even with appointment. read more

I took my dog into kilauea vet for hw test and vaccines and while they are lowest cost on island -If you have a fearful or timid dog i do not suggest you come here as my dog didnt want to walk with them so they literally dragged her in to the point she was pulling away from them and choking herself trying to escape and they should of just picked her up or made a exception and allowed me to bring her into the exam room.During the exam she almost fell off the table. read more

Granted that this is a small town/1 doctor practice, emergencies are not always able to be accommodated. We have a back up vet that can take emergencies in case Kilauea Vet cannot see us. After the disappointing last few months of Aloha Vet. Center and it's inability to meet the needs of my pet I sought out a new Veterinarian for Molly Baby my 15 year old Lhasa Apso. These folks actually charge a very fair price for med's that Molly must take daily. More than half the amount less than her previous Clinic. They even filled her meds that day while I waited. I've never had a Vet. Clinic do that before. That's all for now as I'm looking forward to working with these folks at this Clinic to provide the best treatment for my little baby. read more

BEWARE! I have been going to this vet for over 20 yrs! Loved her loved her staff! But now it's HORRIBLE! The doc is losing her mind! the staff is stressed/over worked, thus not functiona! So here's the long detailed story...on a Monday at 7:30am dropped off cat for an emergency walk-in, I called all day, mostly got a busy signal finally someone answered, told me they were busy, doc hasn't had a chance to see her yet & that the doc would call me after she examines her...DOCTOR NEVER CALLED! The next day I kept calling (busy signal) finally I was told doc wanted to talk w/ me...ok great put her on...nope no time now, she will call you later...NO ONE CALLED! Now we are on day 3 & 2 overnights! And I still have no info & doctor has NOT CALLED ME! Finally I get Abby on the phone she again tells me doc wants to talk w/ me...great but she never calls! So Abby tells me my cat is very sick, will need injections, they were not even sure that would be the answer, it is not in me to give injections and I have many health issues...so I said put the cat down, I also expressed my concern about the bill (esp. cuz I just had her do a surgery on MYDOG for $400.00 & MY DOG is worse than before she had it! ) Abby said "don't worry doc will give you a break" But no, doc doesn't like putting animals down so she keeps giving her meds & keeps her another night! The next day, we are on Thursday now, I speak w/ Leslie who says ok they will put her down... so to recap: cat dropped off Monday 7:30am, no one calls me Tuesday I call all day get no info NO ONE CALLS ME! Wensday I am told cat very ill, I say put down, still NO ONE (doctor) CALLS ME! Thursday I keep calling & finally they agree to put her down cuz she is NOT improving! so now it's time to pay the bill & I am slapped w/ a $330.00 bill! I say no, I never was asked or agreed to all those nights etc the doctor NEVER CALLED ME! This is NOT FAIR! Plus I said to put her down and I kept expressing my concern about the bill! I called several times trying to settle the bill & no one would help me they just said it was $330.00, I asked for a break down, how much for office visit? How much for the blood work to diagnose what was wrong & how much to put her down? that is the FAIR amount that I will happily pay! I called many times spoke w/ Macy/Jen...left several messages for the doctor on her voice mail, I am talking over 3 months I never once got a call from the doctor that I was told wanted to talk w/ me since day ONE! 'Then 2 days ago, my service dog needed some meds so I went to the office to pick up her meds and I had $150.00 cash w/ me to pay the unsettled bill, I figured it would be about that much, I was then told I had to pay in full or take my "business" (excuse me? MY DOG is NOT a "business" she is my life!) elsewhere! What the HELL are you talking about? I am shocked & crying! This is my service dog! I have a brain tumor you have been her primary doctor for 13 yrs! We have had an EXCELLENT RAPPORT ALL THIS YEARS and I brought my cats to her for 10 years before that so over 20 years of doing "business" together and you (doctor) are canceling us AND YOU NEVER ONCE CALLED ME! Dr Seeske at Kilauea Vet. and her staff are the unusual one in a million that work from their hearts and souls with integrity,honesty,Both the Doctor and the Staff are very knowledgeable with the ability to explain to the client complicated medical terminology in lay persons verbiage. Pet emergencies and illnesses are emotional experiences. I am always impressed by the compassion and dedication this group performs. Finding a true 'healer" in todays business world that cares more about the well being of our (non human) family members more than their cash register.totals only is rare. Over the decades Ive never observed anything less than complete dedication to animal's welfare, wellness and safety emanating from these women that make up the Kilauea Veterinary Services. As the Big Island continues to grow so does the demands on smaller business like this. It is fair to expect a wait in scheduling due to higher needs from the community. They have a great reputation already, they dont need my review. However for my 2 cents - its a rare gem to find someone really willing to care for our pets as if they were their own! Im thankful the Puna community has this resource, more than words. They are life savers, many many times a day. If youre an animal lover who anthropomorphism dominates your lifestyle, this is the only veterinarian group for you. I hope they have room for new clients if you're in need of a great vet. P.S. Ive left town too,I know from pro boarding kennels- if you want your pet to have accessible emergency vet care while youre away; you should fill out a release and waiver with payment guarantee; leaving a copy with your veterinarian and pet care givers before you leave. We have been bringing our pups here for several years - they come at least once a year for their annual check - up. For the most part, the staff is warm, kind, and will engage with you in meaningful ways about your pets care. Dr's bedside manner can be - what is the word - more stern? - than some others, but at the same time you can tell that she really cares about your babies and giving them the treatment that they need, even if that means sending them somewhere else. For example, when our Sophie had hip problems and then bone cancer, we were referred to another Dr. in Hilo who specializes in these issues. But, when we lost the battle to save Sophie, it was Dr. V and K Vet that made a donation to Rainbow Friends in her name, which was very touching. And, when there is something that they can take care of in house, they will do it as soon as possible - for example, about a month ago Dr. V was able to perform same day surgery to remove a tumor on one of our other baby's foot, which had grown rather quickly but was benign (thank goodness). The nurses will even call you after hours if needed to follow up on questions that you had - as others have said, they are very busy during the day. They are also booked a few months in advance - so it's best to make appointments early. They do have ways of working in emergency care, but I would definitely call ahead. read more

I dropped my dog off for a procedure. This was my first time at this clinic and the worker who checked me in was helpful. She asked me a series of questions to create a file for my dog and explained the process, including cost / pick up time. I was pleased with the their flexibility and reasonable prices, compared to other veterinary clinics in town. However, be prepared for a long wait. They are very busy. During check out, there was only 1 worker who answered the phone calls while collecting payments, selling products and explaining after care instructions. I felt very overwhelmed just by watching. They also have to do everything manually (from calculating cost, writing cash receipts and using index cards for the animal file). I definitely recommend this vet and will continue to bring my pets here. read more

This vet is a joke. First of all, anytime I've taken my pets there it seems like they're just trying to crank out another visit ( CHA- CHING$$) then out the door we go. No problem my pet had has ever been solved, and I have 2 cats 2 dogs. Those are pretty good odds. You'd think they could've actually helped one of them once in the couple of years we've been going there. Now to the real reason for this review. It's August 2020. COVID is hitting harder than ever, I took my dog there less than 5 months ago. So I try to order my dog her flea/ heart worm meds from 1800 pet meds like I've always done and I get an email saying that these clowns have informed them that I need to make an appointment to get my dog her medication. I call and speak to some half wit who tells me " We can't give out the prescription. If your dog takes that medication and happens to have heart worms she'll die" to which I reply " I know she doesn't have heart worms because I give her and have given her the meds every month for almost 10 years now". She says " You have to make an appointment" . I say " So for 6 weeks, until I can get an appointment, what about my dogs meds???" HERES THE KICKER PEOPLE!!! This amoeba says " Oh, you can come here and buy one month doses until your appointment" So apparently they have the magic medicine that isn't going to kill my dog... They're full of $hit, all they care about is money. They could at least try to act like they care but I guess that'd be too much work. Not to mention the fact that most businesses are trying to be flexible and limit in person activity to necessary visits. Not them... COVID , too bad, you have to come in for an appointment. UNFORTUNATE review - but 100% true experience... too bad, a small number of the front office staff berate customers and complain about one another, this was my experience. These women that work there need a course on childhood manners and accountability!! 1.3 years ago Kilauea Vet began as a go-to when we moved from Oahu with our two rescue dogs. First visit, this Vet was paid nearly $200 for tests and bloodwork for an initial visit for our rescue Shih Tzu, prior to a lump removal surgery to be done later. I was told by the Vet to "leave the room", because my Shih Tzu was squirming around on the table, being the first time she was nervous, so I did. I've never been told this before, by a Vet! I let that go and set up the surgery anyway, so glad I cancelled it, due to rudeness! There are a couple of old-timers there - I thought they were okay, but never workable. Dr. Seeske is apparently one of the best Vets, however it's not her you often deal with-it's the RUDE women!! We had an amazing longtime Vet on Oahu, who we were happy to travel back and forth to, however sadly, he passed away... Getting a solid, compassionate vet here, as KV says they are - has been a huge ordeal. Funny, some vets, like this one, Kilauea Vet call themselves "compassionate" but I can attest to the fact that this vet, due to a couple of rude and crotched-y old women who run the show and not in a loving way, they have been FAR from appropriate. We've been treated so poorly by these same two women there, likely because the vets out here mostly take on an attitude that they can take you or leave you, due to so few out here. I decided NOT to have this vet do the surgery. Rather, from time to time used for flea prevention - nothing more. I had another awesome Vet do the lump surgery - SO GLAD I did!I had one unfortunate experience with one I believe is named L., if this is the one I am thinking of, who openly bitched and complained about another named N., who "took a day off and had no right to, I don't know who she thinks she is!" ..said someone named L., to me, upon my simple flea treatment pick-up. The woman she was complaining open about, named N. had always been kind but turned cruel, due to the other cruel ones there. She was spoken despicably about by her fellow staff member, now she will be advised. Fast forward, I called Kilauea Vet before the final straw to avoid them altogether!!! I would never use them again, period, after their completely disturbing behavior since then. Called them to get a rescue dog's heartworm test done - they said verbatim, the doctor didn't need to do it, the vet assistant could do it with older lady N. Today I call them to get the heartworm test results faxed to another vet - and all hell breaks loose again - from other older lady L. She starts complaining about how the doctor "was against having the heartworm test done!". What is going on at this Vet's office?? Lady L. continues to put me in a shitstorm of complaining and berating me over this, then hangs up on me, but assures the tests will be faxed. THEY LIED, they did not! Right after that, lady N. calls me and tells me the most inappropriate things I've ever heard - saying I have filed complaints against them and I am 86'd ! I have never filed any complaint whatsoever! I just decided NOT to use them, except for purchase of products for our rescues, once in a while. The reason was their awful demeanor. What kind of employees speak like this to a customer and represent a Veterinary practice - then refuse to provide test results? There is a real problem with behavior of these women - and sadly the doctor turns her head to the staff's serious issues and clear in-fighting, openly berating people in the presence of one another and others, and no one addresses this poor public behavior? Seriously? They are apparently highly agitative, which turns into awful demeanor, as was our experience. Just to be clear, I am speaking of the 2 older ladies who displayed such poor behavior and are at minimum the ones involved: first name L. and other one first named N. both of whose behavior was atrocious. These women lied blatantly about me and my rescues, and another younger employee who talks a lot there, is an instigator of these two older ladies confronting me certainly, and I witnessed her watch them speak ill of each other, and of me. But, to call me back on my personal cell and berate me, is just disgusting! They should be ashamed of themselves. Their disturbing, erratic behavior is unprofessional and cold-hearted, worse ever I've seen in a vet's office! Frightening and disturbing behavior. I told this woman who called me back, lady N., to please just fax the records - and she proceeded to attack me on the phone and use term 86. Who does that? I replied in kind, to get lost, I'd had enough. No more!! Right is right and wrong is wrong - shame on Kilauea Vet! NOT PONO. (My profile location is not OR., but HI.) Nothing worse than trying to find a new vet that has at least a working knowledge about grey's when your new to the area. I had called and visited other vets but was told NO they would not see Bob. There are not that many vets on this island but I was prepared to do whatever it took to make sure he got the treatment he needed. One vet told me after I got thru explaining that these greyhounds were not the same read outs after the tests "but there all just dogs aren't they"? With that I just looked at him and walked away to continue my search. There are only two greys on this island a third will be arriving in November. Glad l was persistent on this quest. read more

I would give 1/2 a star if I could. I read the good reviews, all six of them and called to get an appt for three of our dogs. Waited two months for this appt (not urgent, just a meet and greet cuz we're new to the island). For us it's a 90 minute drive to any vet so doing all three at once is optimum. Well today they called and confirmed the appt. Fine. Called again and moved up the appt by 30 minutes. Fine. Called just now and said they cannot see all three dogs in a row, in one appt that its against their policy. Unbelievable. Unprofessional. Handled the situation poorly overall. We are responsible people, take good care of our pets and follow instructions and are punctual. And we're taking our business elsewhere. read more

I went to this vet because my dog was coughing up blood. We figured out it was because of rat poison. I told Dr. Seeske hat he was acting ill for almost a week. She gave him Vitamin K shots because it is the antidote for the kind of poison he ate. What I later found out that it only works if the dog just recently ate the poison. The only treatmet is a blood transfusion at his stage. She sent me home with some vitamin K pills and a bunch of false hope. He died 2- 3 days later. He never had a chance. Avoid this place. I am heartbroken over this. She also gave me a guilt trip about using poison for the rats. I am a rat lungworm disease survivor and was killing the rats to keep me and my dogs safer from rat lungworm. read more

We were watching an animal for friends who were clients of this clinic (to be clear, I am not speaking on our friends' behalf). That animal was attacked by dogs, so I called the clinic. They refused to see us because they were too busy. When I explained that the animal was going to die (which is, in fact, what happened), the response was (exact words) "I don't know what to tell you. We're slammed." I should also point out here that none of the people I talked to were the kind of friendly and pleasant people you would expect to be working a front desk/reception. I understand from personal experience how busy offices can get, but a good veterinary clinic will do anything to fit in such urgent appointments. In similar (but not as urgent) situations, our own vet has told us to bring our animals in, and depending on their condition, we might have to wait a long time to be seen and pay a large fee. I think this is reasonable. I would have understood being turned away if this were just an average illness and not a life-or-death situation or if this animal was not already a client. I also would have accepted being told that we could come in but would have to wait for an indefinite period. But we were flat out immediately told "no." As a business that is trusted with the lives of beloved pets, I found their response to be unacceptable. They are medical professionals and should take the time to tend to suffering, dying animals even if it means staying at the office a little late. It's not an easy profession, but this is the responsibility you accept when you become a veterinarian. After this experience, I will not recommend this clinic to anyone. Either they are not passionate about caring for animals or their staff is incapable of triaging. Either scenario is devastating for our animals in emergency situations. Edit (December 2015): I have not changed anything in my above review. It seems that I should add something, though, since I received a message from another reviewer requesting that I change or delete my review primarily because I presumably didn't understand the legal issues. So, for the sake of clarity, here's what I'll add: I had authorization. I had a signed document from the owners stating that I was caring for the animal and had authorization to make medical decisions during a specific time period. Kilauea was not concerned about that matter. They never questioned it. An authorization problem was not the reason that they did not see me. They made very clear that the reason that they would not see me was that they were too busy. It was the only reason that they gave me, and they repeated it multiple times. read more

(The following review is for a 12/7/15 visit to the Kilauea Vet Services located in Keaau, on the Big Island.) We had just recently brought over a 1 yr. old pup from the mainland. When she exited out of her travel crate she had a large, (bigger than golf ball) sized lump on her side. She also was acting lethargic. After about a week there was no change in energy level..... and the lump was getting slightly larger. We began to worry and started looking for a vet. I did a bit of research and Kilauea Vet Services appeared to have decent reviews. I called and spoke with Leslie who told us they were booked up solid for another couple of weeks. I explained our concerns and she suggested we try a clinic in Hilo staffed by multiple doctors that might be able to see our pup sooner. Just before we hung up, Leslie said that they just had a cancellation and could see us on the following Monday, only three days away. Over the weekend our pup hit a low on Saturday, not wanting to get out of bed even for her food. Sunday she seemed to turn a corner and began eating small amounts. On Monday I brought her in and just a couple of minutes later we were in an exam room with the Vet. The Vet examined the pup and explained what the lump was. She recommended that it be drained. With the help of a couple of Vet Techs we lifted our nervous 102lb pup onto a steel table. The Vet drained the fluid from the lump on her side, then took a blood sample. One of the techs took the pups temperature and a stool sample. The vet then educated me on some of the dangers on the island such as Leptospirosis. She reviewed our pups med record that I had, for past shots/treatments while a Tech put a bandage over the needle wound from the draining. The Vet then made some recommendations for heartworm medication and supplied me with some anti-biotics, heartworm medication and a pill for the intestinal worm found in the stool sample. The cost of the visit, tests and medication came to around $140. Overall, I was very satisfied with the visit. The entire staff appeared to be very caring, knowledgeable and professional. The facilities were clean and orderly. The cost seemed reasonable. Additionally, the Vet, (whose name I can't seem to remember) went out of her way to explain what was going on and why. If and when we need the services of a Vet again, Kilauea Vet Services will be our first choice. I consider myself fortunate that they are just 15min away. read more

Months ago they helped me over the phone when my dog was suddenly (and very temporarily) unable to move anything except for her eyes, tongue hanging out and all. I called every vet I could find listed and nobody would help - not even our regular vet because he "doesn't do emergencies". The doctor was even willing to come to my home to see my dog if what we tried over phone didn't help. She stayed with me on the phone the whole time. Two days ago a stray came in our fence and he seemed nice but at some point bit my other dog in the cheek/neck area. It looked okay at first but today I noticed it looking much worse with matted hair and lots of moisture. I called Kilauea Vet and they seemed genuinely concerned but they were unable to find an appoint for today or tomorrow. They asked me lots of questions over the phone and gave me tips to help her. They also gave her a prescription for antibiotics from what I described that I could come and pick up - - which were surprisingly inexpensive. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Outstanding vet, wonderful staff, reasonable costs. We have lived here for several years and had disappointing experiences with other vets in Hilo and Kea'au. We came to Kilauea Vets for a long time just to get our pet meds and were impressed with the interest, knowledge and excellent customer care of the staff. We called them once or twice for advice when our vet was out of town and they were always very helpful, and more importantly, gave excellent advice. We have six dogs and were loyal to our last vet through several mishaps and a few years, but with the last mess up we followed our local friend's advice and registered all our dogs at Kilauea. Kilauea have been better than we could have hoped. We took our puppy there to be spayed - after a careful settle-in with a cozy blanket, showing the kids where she would be, the puppy had the neatest surgery and fastest healing time of any of our bitches. We have had all the dogs checked over and we were so impressed by the thoroughness, genuine care and interest the vet and the staff took in each of our dogs. Their approach is animal-centered and down-to-earth. We are so happy that we eventually arrived at the best vet in East Hawaii through word of mouth and high recommendation. I have gone here for 2 years but have recently changed to a vet who seems to have more modern treatments. My older dog needed teeth cleaning which they do only in the after noon. When I picked her up she was almost unconscious and still under the anesthesia effect. It took her almost 2 days to recover. Never have I had issues with her anesthesia before. I do not know what drugs where used but I did not like the effect Then we had a situation when we though it was time to put her down. The vet only does this at 5 pm and this was very early in the morning. We were told to go to the humane society. This is an incredible stressful time for anyone who goes through this and we were taken back by the lack of compassion and urgency. Another vet insisted on a wellness check before we agreed to euthanasia. Not even suggested here. In the end our older dog is still with us for now, and getting better care in our opinion. They are also helping with her arthritis which was not an option here. read more
