My first cut by her was wonderful but they got progressively worse. It was like she was using my head as an opportunity to try whatever wild new cut she saw in a hair magazine, which was not appreciated. People infer a lot based upon appearance and Merna's cuts were not reading as professional. My last cut by her had way too much going on - angled towards the front and also angled to one side, bad layers, odd bangs, etc. After laying out $150 with tip for a cut, I expect something that looks as expensive as the cuts were. Leave the Haircuttery-worthy experiments for the mannequin heads - not your clients' heads! Merna's daughter is lovely but some of the other assistants in the shop were rather rude. There was a young lady handling shampoos who was either Latina or Middle Eastern who wasn't always pleasant to deal with. I get that up and coming stylists often have it rough but being rough makes things worse (i.e., unemployment). Ladies, there are plenty of other hairstylists in NYC who will do a much better job on your hair for less money! Avoid this salon.

To begin, I arrived at 6:40pm on a Friday, and they closed at 6:30pm. Since there were so many girls in chairs the owner said, "No Worries" and had one of the girls start my relaxer, deep conditioning, trim and style. I mean she was great at cutting ,perming, sewing, you name it she was great at it! The problem with Sabrina is that she is unreliable, a bit confrontational, and she is the slowest working stylist that my friends and I have ever come across. Sabrina takes years to do your hair, she is never on time for appointments and if you are lucky enough that she is already at the salon for your appointment, be prepared for your whole day to be taken up with her talking on the phone, texting ,eating, taking her sweet time to finish your hair. I mean she really works slow, and this is from years of experience, and I know about 10 people that once went to Sabrina but all of them stopped because she lacked professionalism. In addition to that she chooses to go up and down on prices whenever she pleases. One week you could pay $85 and the next week you will pay $100 , for the exact hair style, and she just decides it whenever she pleases. Sabrina is a great stylist and I would never take that away from her but she is not worth the money and time being that there are a million other great stylist in that salon and in new york that don't take forever to do your hair and won't go up and down on prices just because they feel like it. You can not rely on Sabrina if you have made an appointment with her or if you are a walk in, and when confronting her on any issue she gets defensive and instead of accomadating she does not care. I explained to the stylist that my hair was transitioning from processed to natural and if she was able to manage it in its fragile state, of which she said yes. After she began the installation wrapping massive amounts of thread on the braids at the edges. I was horrified at the amounts of my own hair that had just been pulled out by this women for a weave. I removed the hair as soon as I reached my home my edges were destroyed and my hair now requires a cut and several treatments. I don't advise anyone who is trying to grow their hair to go to this place. The stylist motto is get your money at that moment she doesn't care about longevity or long term customers. After checking out the website and looking on Instagram, I finally decided to go to Chenoh. I liked that her page had a lot of different haircuts and that the lines on the haircuts looked really nice. The salon itself is very small but charming. There is a lot to look at - which I really liked. I also liked that the music was good and that it wasn't too loud or too quiet. Everyone seemed to be in their own zone but also respectful of everyone else's space. There is no pretense. I felt like Chenoh really understood what I wanted from a haircut and color. I left feeling like a refreshed version of me.

I waited for the stylist to show up until 10:15 am, at which point I asked the receptionist if Esme was on the way. She said she would call him, which surprised me as I imagined she'd have done it a while ago. She then informed me that the stylist got his schedule wrong and would not be in until 11:00 am, but that he would cut my hair for free to make up for the mixup. When I returned at 11:00 am, he was working on someone else and I still had to wait. When he did come over to me, he was only mildly apologetic. He asked what I was hoping to get done, and I described that I'd like to trim my bangs (which were a whispy fringe), trim my long layers, and trim the ends of my hair by about an inch. He didn't ask for a reference photo and got straight to cutting. He cut my hair dry, which I had never had done before and did not ask for. He proceeded to thin my hair with his scissors at severe angles and barely touched my bangs. After the dry cut, I was shampooed by the receptionist, who only applied shampoo to the front of my head. Then, he dried my hair without any heat protectant--drying my bangs down and flat against my forehead--and cut my bangs from there. I kept having to nitpick the bangs themselves because they were uneven and blunt. Long story short, my hair is thin, my layers are choppy, my bangs are ragged, and my ends are split--he essentially gave me a wolf cut, unprompted. I have never had such a bad salon experience or sloppy haircut in my life. I walked in there with long, thick, wavy hair and came out with a rats nest--choppy layers that stop at my chin and essentially a mullet--that I don't think I can fix. I should have said "forget it" when they offered me the free haircut. Do not go here if you want a proper haircut or to be treated like a proper client.
