Walked in the other day and as soon as I stepped in, Yolanda, the owner, gave me a nasty look. I asked her about a service and she said to me: " I don't do Black hair." I was shocked. I told her my hair texture was curly and she laughed and said: "Whatever I don't do Latina hair either." I realized at this point that this woman is a BIGOT AND WANTS TO EXCLUDE MINORITIES FROM HER SALON. I have to finally write a review. When I moved here from Philadelphia many years ago, I was sad to leave my stylist Giovanni Pele. He is still a god, but I don't have the time or schedule that would allow me to go down there for special trips. I fumbled my through many Manhattan's top salons over the years, and have never been completely happy. I feel too many of the salons such as Bumble and Bumble or Arroyo try to push their vision or version of what they want you to have instead of really listening to the client. I have had really expensive bad color over the years. I started seeing Jennifer when my son started school at PS 130. She was a colorist at a top salon in Manhattan, and this is her mother's salon. Jennifer only works on Saturdays and cares for ever growing family during the week. She listens to what you want. When I am inarticulate, she intuitively knows what I am trying to get to. Her highlights and color are beautiful. I tried a different version of Ombre this weekend, and I am so happy with my hair that I can't stop playing with it! Jennifer will also be honest with you and will let you know if a a certain service or color is not for you - when you can wait to cover your grey or it's time! I have had my hair blown out by Yolanda for special occasions, and I am always happy. I love the family atmosphere and it's always warm and inviting. read more

Sat down and immediately encountered a customer ranting about Democrats. I asked for the political conversations to stop because I consider hair salons places of respite and like to relax and get away form the challenges in the world. Yolanda said it was a private conversation with her client--although everyone could hear it. It did stop but not without clear aggression from the owner. I had heard good things about this salon through friends, so I brought my 2 boys here (ages 10 and 12) for cuts and a color job for my eldest. Vincent was so nice and accommodating, and he gave my kids excellent cuts and did an amazing job with the dye job as well (all the while being so kind and complimentary to them). Yolanda and the hair washer were also super sweet and kind. At one point, an elderly client was leaving the shop and everyone expressed concern about her walking home by herself with all of the snow and ice on the sidewalk, so Vincent hooked his arm in hers and walked her to the corner and across the street--such lovely people here! I found Yolanda by chance. I saw her salon during a walk and decided I would treat myself to a new haircut. I was greeted by Yolanda, herself, who is warm and welcoming. I trusted what she can do with my hair and I came out walking away with such happiness. What a gal! She really makes you feel at home in BK...(I'm from the Bronx). After a each visit, I always walk out feeling beautiful every time. There is also another stylist by the name of Vincent, I've watched his work and his clients are happy. There is also children's books and magazines for guests and their families to keep you busy while you wait. Yolanda's Salon is wonderful and so are the rest of her team! I cannot recommend Yolanda highly enough, whom I discovered by chance when a friend recommended her in response to my moaning about my expensive-but-mediocre regular haircutter. Yolanda gave me one of the best haircuts of my life. Really. And besides that she's a lovely, warm person. I would not recommend this salon to anyone. I visited in November for a hair trim and blow dry. I arrived and was told by Vince that he would have to work in someone else that needed their hair color corrected. I was more than willing to be patient. When it was my turn on the chair I asked for the ends to be trimmed that were damaged. Vince showed me three inches were damaged and I agreed to only 3! He ended up cutting a total of 7inches. He repeatedly said it was the three and my hair is looking healthier as he kept cutting more. To not cry in the chair I simply let him finish before I made a judgement call. My hair was near my belly button when I walked in and walking out it barely reached my bra strap clip. To add more salt to the wound because his next appt had arrived and was still fixing another woman's hair color he stated he could not blow dry my hair as I previously scheduled weeks before. read more

Possibly the worst haircutting experience of my life. Yolanda's pregnant and apparently angry daughter, seemed to want take out her frustration on my head. First she yanked the brush carelessly through my wet curly hair, scraping my face several times. Took off way more than i had asked, didnt check with me about it. Worst part, was her violently scraping and shoving my hair from left to right, and then my face, blow drying it out until i looked horrific with my poofy hair standing a foot away from my head. it was a girl's worst nightmare. she then went back and gave a weak attempt at smoothing over the pieces but i walked out with frizzy, unfinished looking hair. it was the most humiliating thing of my life, having other customers there as well. did i mention that my scalp still hurts, even 12 hours later? so, thank you, yolanda's...for showing me how bad a haircut can get. and fuck you. read more
