Returning to Bloomington for son's graduation a 3rd generation Tattersfield IU graduate. Party of 10 included our 84 year old grandmother. We arrive early around 5pm to get an early table to handle our group. Service was good as was the food as we celebrated our son's achievement. Without notice we were advised that our table had been "reserved/purchased" and though we had open tabs and consuming actively, they insisted that we find another space in the now packed restaurant. It was now raining and relocating to another packed restaurant with an 84 year old grandmother was not an option. I am disgusted with the treatment provided to 3 IU grads, a former little 500 champion, and a large # of guests. It left a stain on an otherwise spectacular weekend. Kilroy's - ahh, a b-school dive bar haunt. It was absolutely insane during the last home game of the year. Not only was there both a line but I also had to pay $15...for a B-Town college bar? Boo. Their cups are smaller now. They don't give out free shirts anymore either. Wow, I sound like a cantankerous "back in my day" review but it's true! It was also so very crowded but we eventually got a table and were able to get some snacks. The pickle spear fries were actually really well done! I didn't try anything else. This must just be another one of those college dive bars that students come here to party. Came in during the summer and order a typical jack and Diet Coke. Was informed they only had regular Pepsi. Totally understand that they're a Pepsi place, but how can you be a massive bar that's out of diet soda?! The kicker is that my drink was $14. I just left after that. I went to KOK with some friends and I brought my 35mm film camera. We paid $10 each in cover and paid for overpriced drinks. After taking four photos (of my friends) with my camera, two managers cornered me (uncomfortably) and told me that they didn't want "my content" there. When I asked what the difference was between taking a photo with an iPhone and my film camera (that had no video capability) they told me "I don't know, but we don't want you in here with a camera" and continued to kick me out. As I was leaving, the bouncer said a few more rude comments towards me. Honestly just shocked because I was kicked out for taking photos that are on the same caliber as taking pictures on a digital camera which they seem to have no problem with. read more

Slipped and fell here due to water being all over their floors and ended up in the ER with stitches and a concussion. I've reached out to management to discuss the unsafe conditions of their bar and haven't been able to get a phone calls or emails returned by management. If you are looking for a classic college bar then this is the place to be. I think it compares well to college bars you see in movies where it's cheap and a little gross but there's a lot of history and reputation behind the name so people still go. On the weekends and during the school year the place is filled shoulder to shoulder and the patio is a super fun time where you can meet tons of people. $2 Tuesdays and other cheap drink deals are nice but are fairly common throughout Bloomington with other bars like Upstairs or Brothers. I haven't tried the food but the service I've had has been great so far, bartenders have nice personalities. One important red flag is that the servers will add in their own tips or double charge cards because most people are overserved and are too drunk to notice. My card was charged twice for two completely different amounts when I was absolutely sure I only purchased one drink and used my card one time. My friend's card was charged $20+ more than what his bill was and the process of disputing these charges is a major hassle so I can see how they get away with it so often. Kilroy's and Sports both have serious issues with overcharging/double charging cards so check your bank account after you leave! read more

Because 75% of the workers weren't working.. specifically a blonde bartender that did everything NOT to work.. our waitress was obviously new and trying..but was not very good as well. Went here before a wedding this past weekend and it was the cleanest I have ever seen this place! I went to IU and trust me I've seen this place packed and dirty! Drinks were good but while sitting we saw a cockroach on the table and told and showed 2 worker girls and they just smiled laughed and went on with whatever else they were doing. Also the red Kilroy's cup you usually get to keep now have to be left so they can reuse them since they are low on them. Issue is these cups have the weirdest lips of a cup that are hard as can be to clean. Soo yuck! I would never choose to come here (to eat) again. I expected dive bar food, but was lured in by $3 quesadillas on a Thursday. Turns out it was $3 until 9. After 9 they were $9 unbeknownst to us, and It was now 9:10pm and before I realized it had I just ordered a couple of half-filled tortillas filled with shredded cheese particles and reheated frozen chicken chunks w/ a bud light for $26 after tip. $100 tab for 3 horrible meals. My friend ordered breadsticks and only received them an hour later with some cold cheese. The sticks sat behind the bar the entire time we choked down our terrible quesadillas in front of him. They didn't have any servers which led to some of the confusion. They didn't have runners taking food directly to the customer, rather sent them back to the bar where they just sat, which led to even more confusion because they didn't keep track of where we sat and his food never came until our bill. The bbq quesadilla was atrocious, too much sauce on a tortilla with a bit of chicken and some sweet @ss bbq flavor. Something I wouldn't cook for my most hated guests. The menu has been marginalized, basically appetizers on a QRcode. They shouldn't have a kitchen(period) at this point. There were also people putting their feet up on the bar and others also standing on the bar taking social pics ,then laying down on tabletops half in a blitz. So bizarre to see bartenders not even saying anything and just watching. Such a poor decision to eat there with all the food options in proximity. The place was literally shut down for a year and yet had people standing and kicking up feet at the bar where food and drink is served. This place is living on nostalgia- they charge a cover charge because it "might get crowded later" per the bouncer, their beer selection is circa 1990 and the music is like a bad playlist on Spotify. Even the teeshirts were lame (and those are usually stellar). I guess having a willing college crowd can make you lazy. So god bless to the owners but in the end this is a large, mediocre, dive bar. read more

College town bar right across the street from IU... and we came on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so it was totally dead because all of the students had gone home for the holidays. Doh. We were in town for a wedding that was held at IU, so of course there were tons of IU alums in our party, and the guys were probably reliving their glory days by coming back to this bar, haha. We didn't need a crowd to make our own party, and we ordered round after round of shots from the extensive drink menu. I finally got to try the infamous stuffed bread sticks, and they were pillow-y, dense, decadent... and delicious with the nacho cheese and ketchup dipping sauces. The electronic basketball hoop game in the corner was a new addition since the guys left campus, so they were elated to play several rounds. I tried my best but was no match for the former athletes. Still super fun though. I was excited to see liquid cocaine shots on the menu because my coworker had mentioned that drink to me for the first time at a happy hour not too long ago, and I was curious as to how it would taste. I was guessing it would be strong, but it was actually a weak and fruity drink. Kind of like punch, LOL. I also had a buttery nipple shot, which was sweet and creamy. And a fireball shot, which was cinnamon-y. I'm sure the atmosphere would be totally different when school was in session, but I still had fun with just us and a few other folks there. Great sports bar! Came here for a promotional event via Jonnie walker. The bar manager was very helpful in getting my drinks together and suggesting what foods to order while I waited. I ordered the pickle fries with my chicken Cesar club wrap, friend cauliflower and the breadsticks per a suggestion from some locals. Everything was delicious, took pretty much everything to go, as it was a lot of food. But this place is pretty awesome! Came here on $2 Tuesday. It was what I expected. The greasy breadsticks are the best. The only complain I have was that it was very dirty at the time. Lots of empty tables that have not been cleared. My boyfriend and I moved a bud light bottle from a table near the window since it looked the cleanest out of the ones we saw. Many tables had dried water marks that looked like they had not been wiped down. Our breadsticks came out before our drinks and beer arrived. My plastic water cup still looked dirty on the outside (I posted a picture) but the inside of the cup looked cleaned and I was given a straw so it didn't bother me as much as it should. read more

The wife warned me not to go here (she is an IU alumna), but I didn't listen. This is a bar with nothing (no live music, no dancers, no DJ) that charges a $5 cover. It takes some guts to charge a cover for nothing and I have to respect that. I did see one video game at the bar. Maybe that's it. Or maybe this is one of the bars where there is a cover to keep it from getting "too crowded." That certainly wasn't an issue the Friday I was there- the bar was basically empty. the drinks are cheap consistently with the generally low Bloomington prices. That's if you can get to the bar across a floor so gross and sticky that at times I was concerned I might have to abandon my shoes. I may have to burn my shoes anyway to avoid infection by whatever substance is on the floor. You have to wonder what possessed the manager here to just decide to stop cleaning. I have learned my lesson and will in future listen to the wife when she tells me not to go to a bar. read more

The only reason this review has 2 stars...is because there's a group mindset to migrate to KOK for $2 Tuesdays, T-Shirt Thursdays, and Friday After Class. There's always a crowd--making it the cool hangout. If you want to be knocked out, get an inception shot. It's literally 6 shots (or more) in one long progression. To bartend or serve food, it's a requirement that you're hot. So if you like that kind of thing, go for it. There are so many bars in Bloomington, though. This one has a reputation as the best--because Greek life loves it--but there are so many other options for heavy college drinking. Pretty cool college bar that everyone might want to experience. They have about 6 bars and outside patio and outside seating out front. The night we went it was a nice night outside, so most of the patrons were out back. I am basing my review on some stuff that happened. First, didn't realize there was a $5 cover charge to get in the place that night. So we paid the $5, but not sure what that was for, maybe the DJ out back? Wasn't all that great... but ok. Then we ordered two Drinks and this bartender charged us $7 each. Which I think I was overcharged because I am a not a college kid. I love KOK! Great food, great deals, young crowd, and fun atmosphere! Everyone usually orders a water long, and they are known for their breadsticks! On Tuesdays, almost everything is 2$, & on Thursday's everything is usually 3$ (order the buffalo chicken quesadilla on these days... only 3$!) and free T-shirt's upstairs usually around 9:00 (but get there early because there will be a line). Friday's are for FAC (Friday After Class) where you can get free pizza and burgers! Monday's have 1$ sliders (and they are FLAME), and Wednesday's have whiskey specials. Happy to say I spent more hours here in college than in the library and I wouldn't have changed a thing! Kilroy's Bar is a fun place to hang out. On various nights Kilroy's offers drink specials that attract IU students and other young folks. I love the young energy that permeate Kilroy's. I was graduated from IU a long time ago and was visiting for 5 days, so I am much older than any of the customer drinkers or the bartenders, but I had fun anyway. Some of the much younger than me students came up to greet me and ask what I was doing in such a college bar - they meant it in a Hoosier/Midwestern friendly way. I had great fun engaging in conversation about me, but more importantly about them - their majors and plans after graduation. Those conversations made me feel good and helped me understand our young folks but, also how much I have learned after graduation. I do not understand why some Kilroy nights are busy with high energy; yet others are quiet and not so fun. Some of the bartenders were warm and cordial; I liked them. One or two were aloof and I did not care for them. One night when there were very few customers, the Kilroy employees were playing various music and one of those was a rap song that used the "N" word (nig_er) and I did NOT like that. That is unacceptable in a public place. It is repulsive. I expect Kilroy owners and managers should educate their employees, black and white, NOT to play such vulgarity. Service has been average. My entree salad came without any dressing, even though I had ordered ranch. It's very dry and boring, but I think that it's illustrative of the experience that you can expect at this place. I went with some friends to Kilroy's hoping to get inebriated before class. Kilroy's is known for its "Two Dollar Tuesdays", and we went on a Tuesday. We posted up at a booth and the waiter came to take our order. Waiter: "What can I get you guys to drink?" Us: "What exactly can we get for two dollars?" Waiter: "Anything." Us: "Anything?" Waiter: "Anything, even Patron." Us: "Well, that's awesome. We'll take a round of shots of Patron." [five minutes later] Waiter: "Sorry, actually it turns out that everything BUT Patron is two dollars." We ordered a round of the second most expensive tequila. Everyone ordered food and a few more drinks. When it came time for the check, the waiter just walked up, pointed at me and said "sixteen"--no paper check available. That didn't sound right. I was told that everything on the menu was $2, so I reviewed for the waiter what I had ordered: 1) Shot tequila 2) gin & tonic 3) burger 4) guiness 5) jameson. Me: "You're off by $6, buddy." Waiter: "Oh yeah, you're actually only $12, because it turns out the Guiness was $4." Me: "You said that everything other than Patron was $2. I'm not paying $4 for that Guiness." Waiter: "Yeah, I know, but that was a mistake. It's $4." My Friend: "I think that manager can help us figure this out." [waiter rolls his eyes and walks off to get the manager] Manager: "What's wrong?" Me: "Yeah, the waiter told us that everything was $2 and he's trying to charge us $4 for our Guinesses." Manager: "Well the Guiness is $4, not $2." Me: "Right, but we were told that it was $2. So we shouldn't have to pay extra because you guys gave us the wrong price." Manager: "Well you guys should have known- everybody who comes in here knows that Guinesses are $4 on Tuesdays." Me: "So we are expected to know the price of your drinks better than a member of your wait staff?" She looked at me with a look like, 'Do you know how fucking retarded our wait staff is?' I guess the management didn't like my review so they complained to yelp about and yelp took it down... Well here's another one... Just look at the overall rating for this place. Terrible terrible terrible. Place is greasy, smelly, and terribly managed since you have bouncers who start fights with clients. Every staff member I have come across is rude and disgruntled and treats clients like cattle. They aggressively snap money from hands. I assume because they feel it's fine to do so since the management probably instructs them to deal with customers in these ways or doesn't train them well or care about customer satisfaction. The only people who give this place more than one star are people who only give good reviews for EVERY PLACE THEY GO... Or friends of the business... I'm not surprised by a lot of the negative reviews for this place, as they seem to come from a non-IU crowd. That being said you need to take Kilroy's for what it is--possibly the best COLLEGE bar around. If you are over the age of 24 or didn't graduate from IUB this place probably won't have a similar experience for you. As a current IU student, you go to Kilroy's because it is cheap, has strong drinks, but most importantly you walk in and you immediately are surrounded by at least 20 friends. As an alum, you come back to relive your old college days for the weekend. The breadsticks and quesadillas are by far the best food on the menu, the water long islands are fantastic, and the back patio is fantastic, especially whenever it's above 60 degrees. They always have fun promotions that will keep you coming through the door. And it's the best place to watch IU games if you don't have tickets that night at Assembly Hall. Bottom Line: If you don't take advantage of Kilroy's while you're a college student, you didn't do IU right. read more
