My mother went to Kimberly Hall for short-term care. Her insurance denied her coverage within days, even though she was very sick and frail. The facility offered her long-term care, at a much higher price point. We were so caught off guard that we did not ask to look at the paperwork. Turns out: the facility lied about my mother's condition. Initially it made sense that the insurance was to blame. They're always terrible. But after my mother passed away, I opened a series of envelopes and discovered her doctors at Kimberly Hall reported to Aetna -- and an arbitrator, Accentra -- that she could walk "greater than 100 feet" and that she did not have "any signs or symptoms" that needed to be watched/treated. In reality, she couldn't get out of bed without falling, could suddenly only see out of one eye, and was so dizzy she couldn't sit up without vomiting. Why, then, did the Kimberly Hall lie? Because they make more money off long-term residents. They also know families will be desperate for help. In our case, the "Business Office Manager," who pretended to fight the insurance denials, was ever eager to discuss my mother's savings account and the blue book value of her car... In the end, my mother did not transition to long-term care. She called an ambulance and a real doctor found a tumor behind her eye. She died two weeks later. read more

Went to see an old friend who is a ward of the State This place will really humble you Went through security and then to visit him He was unkempt with stringy hair, dirty clothes, rotten teeth, and missing a few teeth. This is not how I remembered him. Yes he is suffering from dementia, but I saw no dignity in this place whatsoever. There was no television in the room, and the radio that friends provided for him had the battery stolen out of it, and the cord to plug into the wall was missing. I would assume that was stolen also. He was located on the first floor, twin bed with a dresser and a bathroom inside the room, which was about 9 x 9 in diameter The hallway smelled like pee and poop Residence were roaming the halls aimlessly, and staff was on site, but you can tell that they were shortstaffed This is not the place to go and die. This is not the place to lend anybody close to you go and die, this is not the place to go in rehab. I do give credit to the staff working, as the conditions are poor, and they must be strong inside to be able to do this job I hope to God I never go on State and end up like this read more

The nurses aid named Darcy is the best caring person there!!! Make sure to specifically ask for her to care for you or your loved one she always has a smile on her face and is very soft spoken. After 6 pm. try to get servicece. After ringing the call bell You wait for over 2 hours and have to call the front desk which rings and rings with nobody answeriing. I had to call 911 to get any results. As far as dialysis this is where the problem is.You get totally ignored by completely non observant staff you have to wait almost an hour at times before you get wheeled into your room and your lunch hangs around for 2-3 hours and is spoiled and you'll get food poisoning if you eat it. . One of the worst dialysis facilities in the state. One of the best people in dialysis is one of the nurses named Monica P. Fresinius is a much, much better facility than most Davitas. read more

very filthy place !!! my husband was there recently for short term. The room they placed him in was very dirty and the bathroom smelled like pee as if it wasn't cleaned. Personal laundry wasn't done as promised. The aids and nurses did there best. That place is a dump!! read more

Terrible place. Bad food. Patients neglected. My husband is a heart patient and they yelled at him for having diarrhea. Made him sit for hours in his own pee and feces. Wait hours for something to drink don't empty the urine bottle unless you get someone to. Especially the night shift they are lazy. They stole is clothes and shoes to wash them even though he said No. My daughter and I complained but it took 3 days to get them back and then they tried to steal them again and he was going home the next day. Also the day he was going home they woke him up surrounding his bed and accused him of bringing a gun and trying to kill them with no proof. He is a heart patient and had trouble getting out of bed. He was there 18 days if he was going to kill them he would have done it when he was being treated so poorly. They have No night supervision that is why they do what they want which is nothing. The only thing good about the place is the physical therapy. James was the best. Also their are exceptions for the staff Alex, Valerie, a blonde lady and the person with her who took his blood pressure they were on the day shift. This complaint is about Kimberly Hall South. My mother came here to die, with terminal pancreatic cancer. And they ensured that was exactly what she did. As Tyler indicated in a previous review, there are a handful of wonderful nurses and assistants, who truly love their job and their patients. My Mom was in a ward where the vast majority of the patients were bed bound - which meant they were needing to be changed routinely. I know for a fact that my mother would lay in her own waste because she'd been chastised for requesting a change after only a single bowel movement or urination. And yet Mom never complained, until her very last day. You see, we were now paying out of pocket at that point (insurance denied the claim effective her 70th birthday) and I had requested several weeks prior to have a local hospice care provider on hand that day. Somehow, despite several conversations to this effect, social services still dropped the ball, and it wasn't until I left them several scathing voice mails that things got set up. So on her last full day, the hospice provider came in, and we ALL agreed on several things to improve her quality of life: 2 12 hour morphine pills instead of the liquid morphine they were giving her every few hours (that she hated, and made her incredibly loopy) and no more blood thinner. They'd continue to drain her stomach of fluids as needed, but she was to have morphine whenever she asked for it. Immediately, Kimberly Hall initiated a pissing match over Mom's life/care. Their APRN refused her the pills, deeming her a swallow risk - when she was taking pills all along (including and through her last day!) - she had neuropathy in her hands and couldn't hold small pills, but she could eat them with applesauce. Not being able to hold pills does not mean can't swallow pills. And the APRN wasn't willing to listen to me, her son, her POA, and medical durable POA, nor that it was HER wish or the hospice providers wish. When I visited her in the afternoon (as was my norm - after her boyfriend, who visited in the mornings warned me she wasn't doing so well), she was thrashing on her bed, wanting to be moved. I pressed her call button, and asked her which way she wanted to be facing. She indicated to me towards her roommate. The nursing staff came in, I told them what she told me, and they proceeded to question her *5 times* before I got angry with them. I was told I wasn't allowed to speak for her, when she was still of sound mind. Great, but what if she was refusing to speak, as she was in that situation? So the nurses went and complained to their supervisor, who proceeded to drag me out in the hall and rip me up one side and down the other, for "daring" to mistreat her nurses, for trying to "overmedicate" my mother (hi, terminal cancer patient), and for "speaking for her" (I'm her advocate, you expect me to sit there passively when she's staying silent?). During this time, Mom started throwing up, and they changed her and her sheets. The nurse supervisor eventually went back in to talk to Mom "on her own" ... and then summoned me in, seemingly under the impression that Mom was going to give me a tongue lashing. Nope, Mom wanted to know if she was still getting the liquid morphine. When I told her she was, she pitched a fit and demanded to know why. So I dragged that same LOVELY nursing supervisor back into the room and made her try to explain. She couldn't really justify it , but she tried anyways. Meanwhile, Mom is throwing up again, and I get handed a bedpan and some napkins. Yep, I'm holding Mom's bedpan and emptying it, about half a dozen times. The nursing staff doesn't give an F because she's not throwing up on their sheets. About the time she finally stopped throwing up, a nurse I really liked came on to her shift for the night. We figured out a way where I could suggest something that the nurse might ask Mom for, and Mom could answer yes or no. This worked well. Unfortunately, Mom decided she wanted to be moved (again - because when she threw up earlier, she never got moved!) and started thrashing again. And due to staffing issues, They weren't able to move her for close to 20 minutes. Once they did? She fell asleep. I prepared to leave the room and she woke up - I was able to tell her I loved her and give her a kiss, and she told me she loved me too. That would be our last conversation. I woke up the next morning to a phone call telling me that my Mom had passed during the night. As previous poster Blaine indicated, the admin staff at KHS is a "yes man" - when I sent in a complaint 2 weeks after my Mom passed, I was told he'd "look into it" - two months later, and I've heard nothing. I just filed a complaint with the State, and am considering legal action. Yes, I am well aware that my Mom was going to die, but she deserved better than to do so in the manner that she did. This is referring to Kimberly Hall South. They have a handful of wonderful nurses and assistants who will take their time to learn their patients and provide care as needed. They have a dialysis center attached to the building which is great. It is right off the highway and 10 minutes away from Hartford. My major gripe is physical therapy. They don't have set schedules and come at random times (ie: after dialysis, during a meal, etc.) If they had a set schedule that would be wonderful. They also seem to not care about their patient's individual needs treating them all the same. They do not try or push the patient to conduct therapy. They act very lazy and uncaring. I can only imagine what is happening to patients who don't have advocates there for them. This place is supposed to be a rehabilitation center, yet it seems like they want to keep you there as long as they can. UPDATE: I dropped a star since I can't rate them zero. My loved oned called in middle of night saying they want to go to hospital. We called them and they put us on hold and hung up numerous times. This is neglect. We got there by car faster than contact by phone .This is purely unacceptable. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE! read more

Based on the experience my mother had while admitted there, I would never recommend Kimberly Hall to anyone unless they wanted to see a someone suffer. Issues I observed first hand include: HIPAA violations when CNAs yelled first and last names, and medical conditions of patients down the halls; medication mismanagement when antibiotics, and insulin were "lost" (the exact word a nurse used) and they would "just double up on the next dose" which is a dangerous practice; a CNA standing at the threshold of my mother's room yelling "what do you want?" after 30+ minutes of waiting after the bell was rung (she didn't realize I was in the room). Incidents reported to me include my mother being humiliated by a CNA when they yelled from the hall into my mother's room about her having an accident and needing assistance being cleaned; she being cleaned with excessive force that she was bruised and scratched; my mother being trapped in her bathroom for 1.5 hours despite banging on the walls with the plastic trashcan until a physical therapist found her (she could hear three 30 minute sitcoms pass on the TV which is how she was able to determine how long she was trapped in the bathroom for). The head administrator is a "yes" man, meaning he'll "listen" to your claims, however interrupt you while you explain your concerns and tell you he'll "bring it up to [his] staff" without there being any changes. He and the other administrators only excel at passing the blame, and they are not effective in their professions. The only positive I can say about the head administrator was that he brought my mother socks after a nurse mocked her for requesting a pair. The final straw was when my mother was being discharged - her discharge was planned on a Friday for her to be released on a Sunday. When she was being picked up, the staff delayed her discharge because they wanted to send her home with an antibiotic that she had missed doses on, however they did not have any of the medication in stock on the premises. Their expectation was for someone from our family to return to Kimberly Hall to pick up the medication the next day (Monday) - I rebutted with "why are you asking for me to call out of my job because someone here failed to do theirs?" and the response was "It wasn't my job, I didn't handle the discharge preparations". Additionally, they had done nothing for my mother's after care/in-home care arrangements; the day after my mother was discharged, we found out that the KH social worker/case worker did not make the needed calls with in-home care agency or the insurance company to ensure that services were reinstated in a timely manner. If a facility such as Kimberly Hall were to discharge a patient during the weekend, knowing their pharmacy and other agencies would be closed, it would be expected that on Friday, they would ensure that any medication to be sent home are in stock and ready, and that after-care arrangements needed would have been acted upon and followed thru on to ensure a smooth transition for the patient. Unfortunately, when this was brought up, all that happened was finger pointing, and responses of "not my job". Ultimately, my mother was readmitted to a hospital within 10 days of her discharge for 3.5 weeks due to infections that were not medicated or treated properly, for severe muscle atrophy that was supposed to have been worked on with physical therapy, and other conditions that were not treated appropriately at Kimberly Hall. Families, social workers, and medical professionals: do NOT send loved ones or patients to Kimberly Hall North or South unless you would like to see them suffer or worse, die. read more
