It is unique not only in the A+ care that all residents receive, but the Little Sisters of the Poor truly live their mission, "to care for the Elderly Poor" with Love, Joy and Respect. Every resident I have come to know absolutely Loves living at the Residence. Their lives are filled with joy which is clearly evident whenever you visit. As one resident says, "St. Joseph's Residence is like living on the Good Ship Lollipop, without ever leaving port". As a result, our family members live longer, happier lives. That is a testament to the Care they receive and the sense of belonging - a sense of Family and being in their own home. I highly recommend St. Josephs Residence for the Elderly Poor. A facility that consistently, year after year, receives a 5-star rating from the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health and Nursing Home Oversight.

I did grow fond of some of the nursing staff but at times had their hands tied. Over the past year I have seen the decline in the facility. She was placed in hospice and thought she should still have some extra care to be sure she was mentally and physically comfortable. The attitude was one of basically why try to do anything she is dying anyway. One day I found her hunched over in a wheelchair with a bathrobe and no clothes on. It was very sad. I then sent her to the hospital so she could get comfortable. The hospital assumed the end wasn't near and they sent her back to Meadow Brook. With in two hours she had passed. It was very confusing, since the death certificate indicated she suffered for hours? So why wasn't I called if they thought she was declining however the death certificate conflicted what I was told by the nursing staff. I made multiple calls asking to correct the death certificate to indicated she has a chronic illness. I begged them to fix it letting them know that she couldn't be put to rest until this was resolved. Dr. Singh ignore this even the funeral director called to try to help still nothing. Unfortunately this fell on deaf ears. My sister sat at the funeral home for two and a half weeks. I finally had to let it go so she and I could rest.

Shame on Suffield House staff and owners. How you chemically restrain the vulnerable dementia…read moreresidents with the use of barbaric antipsychotic agents should be criminal. How anyone can think this practice is acceptable is beyond comprehension. And yet, you are basically free to continue with this practice, while antipsychotic agents are used more and more. If you want to control your dementia residents there are safer and humane alternatives than stripping them of their dignity and human rights. What a nightmare having to deal with the Suffield House! Beginning with the social worker who did not know the correct legal representative to consult with, plus putting restrictions on my loved ones phone so that I could not call in nor the resident call out, AND the nurse who violated my loved ones privacy by eavesdropping on our conversation and following us as we walked down the corridor listening to us speak. I have even been told by several staff that my observations regarding my loved ones cognitive state were incorrect and not occurring! There is a name for this type of behavior in the mental health field. The Suffield House staff (exceptions noted) are all complicit in this chemical restraint enterprise.....from the prescribing physicians (who seemingly do not possess the compassion nor social-emotional intelligence to realize the impact that medication decisions have on the resident), to the nurses distributing the agents, and the administrator overseeing the day to day functions. Potential residents and families should make sure what chemical agents are being administered. Do your homework and educate yourself on residents right to refuse. Better yet, stay away from nursing homes where profit comes first and quality is compromised (exceptions noted). Why should anyone care about appearances? For instance, how nice the grounds are landscaped, and even facility cleanliness, when there is a cancer festering in the system, only to be seen when circumstances expose it.

His was a difficult…read morecase...his mental and physical disabilities were quite challenging and profound and he required 24/7 nursing care. The only way my family could afford his healthcare was with Medicaid which simply cannot provide all the bells and whistles. That being said, every member of the staff...receptionists, aids, nurses and administrators who I came to know were caring, kind and responsive. Whenever an issue came up that needed to be addressed, they worked with me to help resolve things. Were things perfect? NO. But at the end of the day, the staff was so caring with my brother, who didn't want to be there. (Is there anyone who given the choice, wants to be in a nursing home?). The building is not fancy...I'm sure if they could get more funding they would do more...but it was always clean. I lived 50 miles from Fresh River and during his time, I looked at other places that were nearby, but none seemed to compare in terms of the care and attitude of the staff. So what did these years teach me? If you are forced to have your loved one in a nursing home, take a moment to think about the folks who are with him everyday. These are not easy jobs. These are folks who are there to solve difficult problems when the outcomes are not always pleasant. I couldn't do what they do. I'm truly grateful to the staff at Fresh River who were there for my brother when I couldn't be.

My personal grievance with this place is that on 3 occasions my pay was short, there was no attempt by anyone to rectify the situation. I have called countless times and the administrator refuses to talk to me. They clearly don't treat their employees right, while I was there I heard similar stories from several co workers, their vacation time being taken away unexpectedly, not getting paid overtime, missing money from checks. Management is effectively stealing from their staff, and hoping they can get away with it. As far as resident care goes, it's just as bad. The residents would frequently state that their needs weren't met, and their concerns went unheard. Several of them had very serious concerns, but expressed that during a state survey no one talked to them, despite specifically asking to speak to a state worker. Most of the employees here, from what I saw give their best effort to accommodate the needs of the residents. It's really hard to take care of this many people effectively with the delapidated state of this building. It's pretty shocking given the location that this facility is anything less than amazing. The owners should really consider investing some money into this building, providing adequate resources for their staff, making sure they're compensated properly, and ensuring the residents are receiving the quality of life they deserve. In my short time there it felt pretty clear that none of these things were their priorities.
