I've never been to Japan before, but admire kimono fashion and have always wanted to try on an authentic kimono. It's amazing that NYC has a place like Kimono House! My friends and I rented Yukata here to go to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden to see the sakura. All the staff wore masks the entire time, and they limit the number of people in the shop at the time. I appreciate their precautions and taking the pandemic seriously! They communicated via email prior to our fitting to show us options for Yukata. I really wanted a red one, which they didn't have, but they tried to order more options. Unfortunately, the shipment didn't come in time, but we were able to coordinate a red obi with this black floral Yukata. I love the outcome! They're very knowledgeable about kimono and can also do hairstyling for you. The fan in the photos I posted was also provided by Kimono House in addition to the Yukata and obi. read more

Jesus y'all, I have been hankering for a kimono for ages. And did I find a place for y'all to go to! Here's a bit of story time since you guys ask for it so much. (Hahahaha, not really. I do this because you're bored and wanted some descriptions.) But before I go off on how amazing this place is, you should be weary about one thing. COVID has definitely killed a bunch of places and the only thing keeping places like this afloat is US/YOU. Do your due diligence by supporting small businesses like this and keep giving your hard earned money to them. You're the only reason why places like this is still alive! Alrighty, now it's time for us to rock out with a kimono out. I came in here because I've been eyeing them for months pre-planned for a friend's wedding. I traveled by the trains and walked miles and miles to get to this cozy little shop and man was I in for a surprise. I walk in and asked for a kimono and the owner was enthusiastically showing me the male kimonos, and as we are aware... I would rather try something else to break the gender norm. She gave me about 4 to 5 to try on and I mean, they looked great but it wasn't what I was looking for. I then told her I wanted to try something along the lines that was purple. She then went wide eyed and told me that she had gotten this BEAUTIFUL and I mean BEAUTIFUL purple kimono. She told me it was really meant for ladies, but I then had to do a turn around and show her I was in my blue flower romper. It turned out beautiful to be honest and I will definitely support her all the way from Houston! So ask around and come in and try it on. Everyone working at the shop are so friendly and want to make sure you love your outfit. They also sell kimono and yukata if you want to buy one as well as any accessories you need. I came here to rent a kimono for my wedding (I'm half Japanese). Yumiko-san was incredibly attentive and helpful, allowing me to try on several amazing kimono while taking my preferences into consideration. In fact, when she had a new shipment, she emailed me immediately to let me know that she had received one that was exactly what I had in mind. I tried it on, she paired the obi and other details to it - and I had my perfect wedding kimono!! Yumiko-san was incredibly generous in the rental time (since my wedding was 3 hours upstate and we would be there for a few days), provided all the pieces I needed and even went so far as to provide my mother lessons in kimono dressing so that she could properly dress me for the wedding day! So following our last visit we had made numerous stops to pick up our Yukatas that some of us had preordered and imported from Japan. Upon picking them up, one of our friends had saw a new one that Yumiko had in stock and was very patient and open for her to choose this one instead of the previous one she chose. After that visit, another one of us had visited Kimono House to buy another Yukata just in time for Sakura Matsuri along with an array of accessories. With every visit, we appreciated the owner Yumiko had remembered who we were. It showed she really did care. Following Sakura Matsuri, our Yukatas were a giant hit and we were able to get culturally in touch with the annual Cherry Blossom festival and have a feel of what it's like to celebrate festivals in Japan. Remembering what Yumiko taught us, we were able to secure our Obis' and yukatas. Everyone kept complimenting our yukata's and asking where we got them from along with a lot of photos. Staff went above and beyond to teach me house to put on the kimono and tie to obi! They even showed me how to accessorize! They helped me to pick matching shoes and all. The owner is very friendly and kind, made it worth saving up to buy my first kimono and it's gorgeous. No surprise that it has long been a favorite go-to for local Sakura Matsuri attendees. On a first visit 10 years ago and again recently, the tiny shop has hardly changed. Merchandise is crammed everywhere, seemingly at random. There's a tidy order to it all but rather than fumbling around, you'll do better enlisting the courteous assistance of the proprietor and staff. It helps to know what you want but if not, they'll offer advice, fully outfit you, or even provide formal kimono dressing services. Kimono House, which caters to men and women, has new and vintage kimono and obi belts, and summerweight cotton yukata, hung all around. Selection is limited, given the real estate, but it's very good for NYC. Properly wearing kimono and, to a much lesser extent, yukata requires more than just the most visible garment, and you'll find them here, including undergarments, various obi belt accessories, tabi (split toe socks), footwear (geta, molded wood-bottom sandal with kimono fabric straps, or zori, straw weave sandal), kimono-fabric bags, and hair ornaments. They have some traditional haori, or kimono jackets. There are more casual items too, like kimono-style robes for home, patterned socks, hats, knick knacks, and more. The unisex geta I picked up 10 years ago remains a summer staple for me, paired with decidedly untraditional outfits, and still in great condition. The more feminine geta and obi picked recently to go with a yukata purchased in Japan were a perfect match and good quality. You really can find anything in NYC. This is the only place in NYC where you can buy authentic kimonos and Japanese attire. I've bought two pairs of geta here. I've searched high head and low to find them at an affordable price and one that can fit my huge ass feet. My first pair was male, my second pair was female. They both first amazing. The female pair was freshly imported from Japan. The woman who helped me was sweet and funny. They were very open to finding geta that fit my feet and made it her mission to find the perfect size. They're my favourite sandals. I get so many compliments and they are very special to me. I will definitely be back to purchase many more. read more

My friend wanted to go looking for Kimonos. Not knowing where exactly to find Kimonos, I looked online and the first place I found was Kimono House. It had mixed reviews, more good than bad, so I took her to check it out. It was pretty small, but not really cramped. They have a great selection of beautiful Kimonos, robes, Yukatas and some accessories. The price range wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Have some cash, but don't worry about spending loads of money. The owner is a very nice and patient woman who is happy to help you pick the Kimono that's right for you. Even though my friend wasn't very sure, and didn't agree with some things they picked out, they never once seemed agitated or neglectful. They helped her pick one that she liked which was gorgeous, and she showed her how to put it on correctly and tie it. She was very knowledgeable about the items. They even have an adorable dog (Shin-chan) who wanted to join in. They were truely VERY kind people. Even though I didn't buy anything this time, I will certainly be going back there if I ever need or want a Kimono. She gave me a little charm even though I haven't bought anything (though my friend did) and you leave that place feeling so good. I came here with my own kimono needing accessories to wear the ensemble to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Sakura Matsuri. The best thing about this kimono store is the fact that they give you free lessons. I was so eagerly greeted and I purchased a complete juban, obi, geta, and ties. They spent two hours with me to select things to match with my kimono and to teach me how to wear it. I felt like a shining star in my vintage kimono (worn perfectly) at the Sakura Matsuri. Really awesome place! The prices for Yukatas range from 85 and upwards. They have many different prints and colors to choose from, and every single product is selectively hand chosen straight from Japan by the owner Yumiko herself. She was actually away from the store and in Japan selecting items. I met Ken, her husband, on Friday and he was very helpful and nice! :) Very patient too, since my friend and I pretty much babbled and tried on everything for a few hours. :X They have a neat rack of vintage and silk yukatas and kimonos! Oh my gosh, I love vintage items. These run between 200-thousands. I believe you can rent them; and that Victoria's Secret actually did rent one recently. Kimono house's item will be featured in the next magazine. ^^ I ended up buying a vintage silk Kimono jacket. It's a light minty green and I'm going to pass it as a dress if the weather permits this Saturday. If not, I may have to run back there on Friday to get one that won't be as delicate :X. Also, beware of the massive amount of trolling that seems to be about and around on the internet. The Kimono House is NOT closed in the SoHo area, despite what Google maps says. Such a gem! I was on the hunt for a robe for my wedding- you know, the getting ready and being shot by the photographer kind- and wasn't having any luck. Then it dawned on me, why not go the kimono route? Thanks to yelp, Kimono House came up in my search. At first glance the store can be a bit overwhelming, maybe even confusing. There are kimonos galore and stacks of hats. It then became clear that this Husband and Wife duo have particular specialties and passions and they've fused them together to make a store. Alas my search began- at first with the lower price points- with which I wasn't having any luck-and then owner, Yumiko saved the day. We began to look and dig and try through the fantastic selection. She was very helpful and once she understood my aesthetic her artistic skill went to work. Each kimono is a work of art that either speaks to you or doesn't. It's like a spiritual experience when you find the one. And I found the one. It's stunning. Found this cool little place from Chopsticks mag. When my hubby and I got there, we were the only people. Yumiko was super helpful and I was glad she was there. I was so nervous and excited to see everything in there, I didn't know where to start. I told her it was my first time purchasing a yukata. She was supremely patient even when lots of people were starting to come in. She made sure that I knew how to put on the obi and asked that I even try doing it while I was there. She gave some very useful information regarding the obi's and how to wear the yukata, what goes where, how to tie everything. She made it look so simple! She answered all the questions I had and didn't seem one bit annoyed like some sales people I've dealt with in other stores. This is a place I would definitely come back to. I thought prices were a little bit high, but then realized these are authentic yukatas and kimonos and will last for a long time so it's worth it. Can't wait to wear it to Sakura Matsuri! read more

After calling a number of different places in search of a bunch koshi-himos and a few obis, I was really happy to find Kimono House. With the Sakura Matsuri around the corner, and my friend wanting to borrow one of my yukatas, I was rather frantic to find an obi for her (and one for my husband as well). Many of the places I called either only did rentals, or weren't very clear as to what items they had, but the lovely owner(?) of this establishment was very helpful with me on the phone. I speak Japanese so it was easy to ask what I needed, and I was able to send my very non-Japanese husband down to the store to pick-up everything that I needed. The prices aren't "cheap" but they aren't hideously overly expensive either. For four female koshi-himo, one male koshi-himo, one simple female obi and one male obi, the damage came to $125.00. I haven't had the chance to go to the store yet, but I look forward to picking up another yukata for next summer :) read more

No need to worry too much, a friendly owner Yumiko will save a day! There are many kimonos and I found one that will reflect my personality and my meanings. This shop also has obis and koshi-himos with variety type of colors. I got everything I need and the price is "expensive" but not too expensive. It's worth it since they contain very good quality made from Japan! Make sure you have enough cash to afford one or else your wallet will cry. I also found out something interesting...that the Kimono House has provided the kimonos and dressing/stylist services for a number of tv movies, screen movies, actors and stage shows for a *very* famous singer dancer. This place is good if you want to rent a kimono for a short period of time or are looking for vintage pieces, but if you want fabric, or new pieces, yukata, obi or other accessories, this place is really over priced. I mean 10x's more than the cost. The shipping from japan doesn't justify the mark up. She gave me a discount on a Yukata I wanted after I initially bought one that was more of a bath robe. I wanted to buy my best friend a yukata (Japanese cotton robe) for her birthday. She loved the one that I purchased in Japan about 15 years ago (which is still in perfect condition; not even faded!). An online search turned up a bunch of online stores but I really like to see and feel the product, and Kimono House was the only one I found NYC with a shop. It's a tiny shop but the owner was very helpful. I browsed what was hanging on the racks, but after explaining my friend's style, coloring, body type, she pulled out a bunch of other pieces and I found a gorgeous yukata for my friend. The owner said my friend could exchange it if she wanted something different. Also, they do repairs of vintage kimonos, which I have one of and needs a little patching. It seems like such an obscure and specialized service so I'm glad I came upon it! read more

What a fantastic little store! Yumiko the owner travels to Japan in search for beautiful kimono and yukata for her shop for men, women and children. She also stocks nemaki (lined sleepwear), flannel robes, geta/sandals, handbags, noren and small gift items. The store offers classes on how to tie obi and also rents kimono for weddings, festivals and fashion photo shoots. The clothing comes in materials such as cotton, more affordable polyester and gorgeous silk to suit all budgets. I bought three items here and felt no sales pressure. Kimono House shares the space with a hat boutique so if you are looking for stylish (mostly mens) hats ranging from classic to hipster. As rudely they did not get to first base as I found them in a quick phone call to be rude, unnerving, inconvenient, distasteful, imposing, overpriced, and in that pretentious and arrogant as many businesses with an idea and without the skills or ability to implement that idea without undue forbearance in what I apologetically state as they call to be busy with other customers though they did not have the patience to schedule me to call at a better time. and the prices were outrageous so maybe it is not the Zen form but spirit which counts.. Anyone who like this joint must be as crazy as they are and has money to burnt. So I guess they pissed me off quickly with their rude abrupt manner that I felt strange since I wanted a full formal suit for an occasion so I guess I might get a tuxedo instead. I took a chance with the Kimono house unsure of what I would expect as it is not often I find myself in need of someone to help me transform into an authentic Japanese Geisha. I entered the Kimono House concerned at the absurdity of my request, but I left to a crowd of people peering through the windows taking pictures thanks to the amazing efforts of Yumiko. Although I showed up with my own Kimono, I was missing several pieces, all of which I was able to get at the Kimono House. Yumiko and her staff were so accommodating they stayed open much later than usual in order to make sure all of my needs were met. In the lengthy amount of time I spent there, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and getting to know the staff so much so that I lost track of time. Although it was Halloween, I will definitely go back to utilize Yumiko's talents in tying the most perfect obi for the next special occasion in which i decide to wear my Kimono. read more
