I couldn't be happier to have found Martina and Kindred Spirit. My corgi gets 1 1/2 hour group hikes daily and gets to hang out with a pack of small dogs. Larger dogs are in a separate section of the yard and house and Neil gives them lots of love and exercise. My husband and I have taken our dog, Juno, to Kindred Spirits for daycare since she was 1. We celebrated her 3rd birthday this month. Daycare day is the highlight of Juno's week. She squeals in excitement in the car ride over. The ethos at Kindred Spirits is to "let dogs be dogs" and it offers off-leash walks on BLM land. Since this is not something we are comfortable with Juno doing, Neil, who oversees the larger canines, has asked that Juno come to daycare on Fridays. He makes every effort to ensure Juno is safe and happy while in his care. We love that Kindred Spirits allows Juno an outlet to play and socialize with other dogs while my husband and I focus on our jobs. It also grants us a reprieve on Saturdays, as Juno is tired and we can all rest together. Neil and Martina both have a huge heart for dogs. We plan on continuing to bring Juno to Kindred Spirits. If we did not, she would be disappointed in us. read more

Martina, what is unfair is the sounds of screaming dogs begging for attention!!! I have zero desire to visit your business as I am a dog lover and it's very hard on me to hear the sounds of dogs in distress OR FIGHTING dogs on your property! Today is just another dailey example. Even with earplugs in, I was awakened to the sound of a dog yelping very loudly, nonstop, in a very desperate manner. This poor animal was screaming for attention! I was even able to hear your yelling at the poor animal, after it woke me up! Martina, what Is not fair is you making a profit at the expense of these continually neglected dogs not to mention the peace of the entire neighborhood! Perhaps you are past your prime with this business and should consider retiring if you can't properly care for these neglected, poor screaming animals! You Martina are the unfair one here! I'm amazed you are still In business. Hopefully you will rectify this disturbing situation ASAP. I am tired of loosing the sleep I deserve to the profit you are making, at the expense of these neglected animals AND entire neighborhood! THIS IS WHAT IS UNFAIR!!! Let me share with you how instrumental Martina and her crew have been in my senior baby's recovery! I lost my 2nd dog, my beloved chiweenie in a tragic accident while I was away on a work trip across the country. My senior dog hasn't done anything solo in 7.5 years, especially boarding. My little guy has been has been coming to this daycare weekly now for about a year and a half. He is 9, and a Jack Russel mix and the search for him to have somewhere to go all came about so I could go on vacation without worry. Ollie has now had a couple overnight stays and absolutely loves going each week. I can understand how this set up may not work for everyone or all dogs but it has been a life saver for me and my guy. I rescued Ollie when he was a month old, part of an abandoned litter and was about a lb. He has terrible separation anxiety, he is attached to me at the hip. I stopped going on vacations out of concern for his well being. But now, I know that he is loved and cared for, he has a great time, comes home tired! Is so excited the morning of when we started off with him shaking and will even walk himself right in! I can leave Ollie in Martina's care and I no longer feel anxious with worry during the day about how he is handling it all. And the whole experience has improved his confidence so much he does much better going to the vet now and other places. We continue going because of all of these positive benefits and the continued growth I see in my dog. read more

My dog was lost by Martina on an off-leash walk on public forest land. He was in the wilderness for six nights alone. We found him only after the help of a volunteer rescue/trap team was involved and we came home early to personally work on the recovery of our dog. It was a miracle we found our little guy. He was two pounds lighter and starving, but the vet was amazed how well he did. Martina did a great job meeting my dog before I had to go out of town, asking LOTS of questions and making sure my dog got along well with others. I then did a half day there a few days before I left my pup and got back a snoozy dog. The weekend seemed to go well, and got back a happy, tired dog. I was worried about her since it was her first time being boarded and reached out to them and they sent back a detailed message about how my dog was. Martina is a very sweet person and the setup seems to work well for most dogs. Unfortunately, even after prep work with the facility staff, my dog escaped through the side yard gate that didn't latch properly. (I had actually been warned about that gate on a previous visit, so it was a known issue.). Martina tried to call my dog back into the yard but he ran off. He was sighted a few times in the neighborhood but no one could catch him. My husband and I had trouble finding a flight into Redmond so we rented a car and drove 9-hours back to Bend. As soon as I got there and called my dog, he came running out to me. I was so relieved that he hadn't run out onto the busy street. One neighbor said he had seen him several times and tried to feed him and give him water. (Not sure why there wasn't communication between that neighbor and Martina.) My dog was thirsty, hungry, and exhausted but he was not injured. He had been hiding in the neighborhood for about 36 hours. I will be looking for a boarding place with more security to accommodate my nervous dog. read more

The concept of this place is wonderful. There are no individual kennels. It is all about freedom for dogs to coexist. That concept is a downfall for SOME dogs. Disclaimer: I have never seen inside any of the various buildings, nor did I ask. I left that up to my husband. What I UNDERSTAND is that there are buildings with beds, couches, etc for dogs to lay on and sleep on where every they choose. My dog had two stays. The first stay was for a few days. My husband met the wonderful owner and had a great feeling about leaving our dog there. When our dog came home, his skin was peeling off in large chunks. He got some sort of skin infection. We thought nothing of it, took him to the vet, and, months later, are still treating him for it. We just figured it was something that occurs with dogs. Only now does it occur to me that, with communal living comes exposure to everything any other dog has. This most recent stay was for a week. When I showed up to pick him up, I walked into the yard and was greeted by a young woman who already had my dog's food bucket and a receipt in her hand. She let me know my total. It was weird because usually you check out at a counter inside and this seemed rushed and informal. While I was pondering this, the woman let me know that she thought my dog was sick, but that since another dog went home, they thought it was the other dog instead because they had not seen any other evidence of illness. She then asked how I was paying. When I said CASH, she was happy to take my cash but didn't have anything for change. I told her to keep the two dollars (which should have been 12 because their math was wrong. the correct amount was crossed off and re-written). No big deal. I was happy to have my dog back. Once at home, within a half hour it was ABUNDANTLY clear that it was MY dog who was sick. Deathly sick. He had bloody diarrhea throughout my entire house! This went on for the next 12 hours. By the time I got him to the vet first thing the next morning, he was lethargic and completely dehydrated. It makes me wonder how long this went on while at Kindred Spirit. The downfall of this place is that it IS communal...food, bedding, disease, and so many dogs that when one is sick, they can't tell WHO it is or how long it has been going on. Kindred Spirit was informed ahead of time that my dog has an EXTREMELY sensitive stomach. It is also written on his food bucket. He can only eat one type of food and treat. He is 11, old for his age and size. We have been working with him with his sensitive system his whole life. I ASSUMED that, with this knowledge, he would be fed separately so that he only ate his food. I'm not sure how they feed the dogs, but it sounds to me like the dogs are all in a room with bowls on the floor and it's a free-for-all. For most dogs, that might be ok. But for MY dog, that is deadly. They also put some sort of gravy on the dog's food so that they'll eat. We asked that they not do that. I can't be sure if that was heeded or not. When I emailed Kindred Spirits to inform them that my dog was so very ill, I got no response. The email was NOT to point fingers at all either. It was just to inform them. My dog will not be returning to this establishment due to the fact that he needs more specialized care. If your dog is fine with communal living, including eating other food and sharing beds, you may not have a problem. read more

We went on a 9 day vacation with our entire family so all our regular sitters were with us. I met Martina on a hiking meet up for dog lovers and saw firsthand how she handled her dog pack. They were all so happy. We were very nervous to leave our Sid for so long with a stranger but he seems to have had a great time. We had a meet and greet first and then he had a play date before our trip. He bonded with Martina's dog and loved having a playmate his size to wrestle and hike with. It gave us peace of mind to leave him in a home setting vs. a kennel. Sid takes meds so it was also reassuring to have someone responsible caring for him. read more

During a recent 2 wk vacation, my husband and I used Kindred Spirits (KS) several days to kennel Sadie (15 mo) & Rugby (13 yr). We often got off the Deschutes river too late from fishing guide trips to pick them up. Martina the owner, and her staff are great and very caring. Martina does a thorough interview with the owners/dogs prior to boarding a new dog. We appreciated this aspect as it gave us, our dogs, and Martina a good idea of a positive fit. Martina keeps some elderly or "more care" dogs in her house playing with toys, interacting, and getting attention. This was great for our small, older Rugby since he is deaf, partially blind, and sometimes hesitant to socialize with other dogs. He benefited from the stimulation/engagement of play time and interacting with other dogs/staff. Rugby actually got to sleep with Martina some nights, rewarding her with "kisses on her nose" in the morning!. The other, younger, more active dogs get to run and play outside. Perfect for our pup Sadie as she loves to run, fetch, play, and roll around with other dogs until she drops. Our dogs were obviously very happy with KS and looked forward to each visit. This was our first time boarding at KS, we're use them again, and highly recommend them. Our dog was here for one night, less than 24 hours. There was an altercation and our dog was injured with visible puncture wounds. The biggest complaint that I have is, that not one person working here actually saw what happened or knows what happened and had no explanation for his injuries. Heard about this place word of mouth from a friend that raved about the amazing atmosphere and outstanding staff. When I got there to check it out the facilities for the dogs were outstanding and I knew i found the right place. There were no kennels anywhere. My dog was free to play with other dogs of the same temperament. I was particularly impressed with the owner and full time care giver Martina who is not only knowledgeable but extremely friendly and accommodating. When I can to pick up my dog Ziggy she didn't want to leave which normally not the case when I leave her at the other doggy day cares. I will certainly be using Kinder Spirit next i'm in the area. I have used Kindred Spirit for daycare and boarding for my very energetic, 2 year old Siberian husky. He LOVES it and always comes home nice and tired. There are lots of dogs for him to play with and lots of room for him to run around. The handlers are always pleasant and seem to have a good handle on all of the dogs. If visiting Bend to ski, this is a great place to drop off your dog for the day. Can drop off as early as 0730 on the weekend or 0700 on the weekdays. Big outdoor area for running (ours came back exhausted and slept for 14 hours), and they have extra dog coats and a bunkhouse to keep them warm in cold weather. The big and small dogs are separated but there was a pretty big pack of both. All the dogs there seemed pretty happy and healthy. We'll definitely be back. read more

I was in town for the day and wanted day care for my two pugs and one 13 year old lab. I read your reviews and decided to give Kindred Spirit a shot. I figured if I didn't like it (or it didn't feel safe for my pups) I wouldn't drop them off. Wow! Was I surprised! It's not only good, it's GREAT! It's like a Disney Land for dogs. Plenty of space to play in and plenty of space if the doggies need room. My two pugs got tired after 3 hours of playing with the other small dogs and went to a part of the yard they could rest (it's very spacious) and watch for Mom to return. My lab was at first put with the smaller dogs because she's really old and a bit frail, but was graduated up to the bigger dogs when it looked like she could handle it. They had plenty of staff (dog lovers themselves) to look after the well-being of every dog there. I can heartedly recommend this for pet care and I'm very picky (I have high-maintenance pugs- this should be obvious.) I only wish I could find a similar place in Portland or Eugene. We have been taking our 12 year old dog to Kindred Spirits for some time now. It is obvious that Martina and her crew care very much about the dogs. While this is an open roaming situation (they check to be sure that dogs get along first), my dog does much better in this rather than having to be in a crate or a kennel each day, which he does not do at home. They take the dogs on a long walk every day. When my dog started to get too old to go for the daily walks because of his hips, they still gave him special treatment. I usually email Martina about mid-trip, to ask how my dog is doing. The last few times, she told me that he was melancholy and to make him feel better, she decided to let him stay in the house with her personal dogs! My dog has always had separation anxiety but I feel much better leaving him here in Martina's care. I can't recommend them enough. read more

My son had an emergency and couldn't keep my 11 year old Cavalier as we'd planned. I was in Alabama at 5:30 Bend time, on a Friday, madly calling boarders I found on Yelp. Katie answered the phone (only 2 out of 5 even did) and I decided to just take a leap of faith. So glad I did! I have one groomed, tired out old boy. Now he's going to expect a daily 3 mile hike out of me! He got to sleep with the humans, hang out with the big dogs and all those good things. I was impressed when I pulled up that no one barked..probably 15 dogs and they ignored me! Jack was actually more interested in trying to get treats out of a staff fanny pack than he was in my homecoming. This was my first time leaving my puppy Bruce at a doggy day care and I couldn't have been happier with the experience! They were super nice and helpful right from the get go and made the entire experience pleasant and easy. I also thought the price was extremely reasonable given the amount of staff I saw out playing with all of the dogs. What a wonderful and novel place to board your pet! Kindred Spirit is like a well-run preschool...but for dogs. There's lots of room for the dogs to be exercised and get fresh air. Dogs are allowed to socialize, but with a great deal of supervision. We boarded our 10 year old lab with Martina and staff for 8 days while we were on vacation. Our lab's stay was preceded by an interview and a 1/2 day visit so that we and Kindred Spirit could get an idea if this would be a good fit and for them to get to know her and any special requirements. A good idea and one that gave us confidence in the competence of the business. As luck would have it, the morning of our departure for our vacation, we discovered our dog had developed a sore spot between her toes. (Good timing, right?) After a quick trip to the vet for some advice, we proceeded to Kindred Spirit, informed them of the problem and they said - no problem - they would keep a watch on her paw and let us know of any developments. A couple of days into our trip, we got a call letting us know that her paw had gotten worse and that they would take her to our Vet which they did on our OK, and from there on our pet received 1st class care keeping us well-informed until we arrived home. If I could give zero stars for this, I would. I JUST returned from running errands on a 79-degree day. While in the Costco parking lot, I heard a dog persistently barking in a car. I drove around until I saw a black jeep grand cherokee with the Kindred Spirit Pet Care sign on the side. Inside, a small fluffy white dog was barking and panting. I waited over 10 minutes, keeping an eye on the dog until the owner came out. I have no idea how long it was there before I noticed it. I was sitting in my car with the windows all the way down, in a t-shirt and shorts, and I was sweating. I can't imagine how hot that poor dog was in a BLACK vehicle with the windows only cracked. When I confronted the owner, saying, "That's some pet care, leaving a dog in a hot car", her response was to say, "The door wasn't locked". Um....What?? As if that makes it okay?? Also, I guess the dog should have known he/she could let himself out at any time. I have pictures of this, it happened. I don't know if the dog she was roasting was her own dog or someone else's, but I wouldn't trust this woman to take care of anything other than herself, which was clearly her only interest today. Shameful. Update: Judging from the pictures on the website, the woman I saw may not have been the owner, but had to be someone related to the business. If she is, she certainly shouldn't be. read more
