Stopped by here for lunch with some coworkers. Conveniently located in a strip with a couple other restaurants nearby. Easy parking available in the lot. Clean and modest decor. on par with other Thai restaurants in the city. Nothing spectacular but not too shabby. We were a group of 8 and didn't have any issues grinding a spot. Got seated and our waters right away. The server came around after a while to get our orders. We ordered a bunch of stuff. I ordered a Pad See Yew (although mentioned as Pad Seyu on the menu) with beef. hot for the spice level. And a Thai iced coffee. The food came out fairly quick and was fresh and hot. The Pad Seeyu was good with a good amount of spice. Not intolerable but definitely made me sweat. It was a little more watery than I have had at other places but still flavorful and the noodles weren't as coated as I am used to. There was plenty of beef and the broccoli still had a crunch to it. The ice coffee was very sweet. But still tasty. Overall not a bad option for Thai food in the area with a clean restaurant and a nice ambiance. Excellent service. I was greeted and seated promptly. The server came to my table within minutes of being seated. Very friendly. I'd rate service a 5. The food is just not very good. I ordered Indian fried rice and fresh spring rolls. Both were not great. The rice was dry and chewy. Old? Reheated. It had an unusual spice profile. The spring rolls were stuffed with overcooked rice thread (mushy) and the dipping sauce tasted very off. Citrusy maybe? No sweet/tang like traditional style. This is the second time I've been here in a month. I was disappointed the first time too, but the service was so good I came back. I don't think I will be returning. read more

Strip Mall Thai Restaurant that is very nice on the inside. Tasteful seating and layout, perhaps not a date place, but certainly a step above your typical strip mall location. Staff is nice, prompt, and pleasant to work with. Food. Well, it was the best of food, it was the worst of food. Got take out - Pad Thai with chicken and Red Curry with Chicken. The Pad Thai was excellent A little tamarind tang, a little cane sugar sweet, very delightful. Also, not greasy. Would order 10/10 again. But not with the Chicken, which was dry, tasteless, and to unpleasant to eat. Not sure if it was precooked and held at too high of a temp, or if it was precooked, then frozen, then reheated. What ever the reason, TERRIBLE. Red Curry as much the same, just not quite as good as the Pad Thai. Also, the heat level was very much made for Americans, not Thai. I ordered medium, and at a Thai Thai place, that would of passed as mild. Always an issue with strip mall restaurants, they adjust heat levels for the majority of their patrons. Can't fault them for that, just be aware. But the downfall was again, the chicken. How can chicken be dry and tasteless when it has been in curry broth for 20 minutes (my ride home time). Haven't been here since it was in Minneapolis, it was just a ls great as it ever was! Service was outstanding and the restaurant was super clean. We were very happy with the quality of the food with one small exception. The noodles for the pad Thai were undercooked, I'm guessing because it was near closing time and they were rushing a bit. Other than that, the holy basil stir fry was so damn good, spiced just right! I love that they do cream cheese rolls instead of puffs/wontons. I feel like you get more cream cheese. We never knew King and I Thai when it was in the city, but have been enjoying it since they moved to Mendota Heights. Up until the last year or so, they were consistently good in terms of their Pad Thai and Pad See Ew, and appetizers. They were also very good about getting the spice level right. Unfortunately, that has changed in the last year or so. The Pad Thai has been oily and spicy even when requesting mild, and the tofu in the Pad Thai has been overcooked, making it chewy and oily tasting. We are now seeking other Thai food alternatives in the southeast metro. read more

I used to go to the lovely original King and I Thai on LaSalle many years ago; it was in the garden level basement of an historic building and had a cozy bar and nice outdoor seating. This was my first time trying their new suburban stripmall incarnation and, while it's not even a tenth as cool as the original spot, the food is still good and they helpfully label all their vegan or veganizable options. The vegetarian egg roll ($7) is vegan by default and consists of two really large, deep-fried marvels. I enjoyed these a lot. The holy basil stir fry can be made vegan ($16) and has a deeply savory and spicy sauce with chewy-meaty fried tofu and mushrooms. I liked this dish and appreciated the complexity of the sauce. The raad na ($13) can be made vegan and the sauce is thick and tasty without being gloopy. I wish it had more preserved soy beans and Chinese broccoli, but it still tasted great. King and I makes some of the best Thai food in the Twin Cities. It's a shame it's so isolated in Mendota Heights. The service is great! But best of all, the food is amazing! Having eaten at a lot of Thai restaurants, this was by far the best!!! The spice levels are Thai perfect and not dumbed down. The use of fresh vegetables lends a flavor that is distinctive than frozen. I would recommend this place. We ended up going there twice in one trip. read more

Nice Asian art, and quiet dining room. The furniture is old, and some of it is damaged. The table was wiped down, but not well enough to remove sticky splotches from previous diners. We had the vegetarian spring roll, which was decent. The peanut sauce was warm and flavorful. Excellent. Our entrées were disappointing... the Raad Na noodle dish was drowning in sauce, with mediocre/bland chicken. The noodles themselves were decent, but everything else about the plate was sub par. The green curry was very watery... I couldn't detect any coconut milk or flavor. The vegetables were average quality. The mock duck was terrible, and was one of the more expensive protein add-ons. If you're going to carry a mock-meat protein, at least present something tasty. This mock duck tasted overwhelmingly like soybeans. Service was decent. read more

Average Thai food is quite edible. Very crispy vegetarian egg rolls were fill with bland vegetables. Almost crisp stir fried vegetables were covered with a very average peanut sauce. The hot tea was warm. The service was helpful if not very well informed, and the esthetic was suburban Thai-like. Definitely not as good as it was in its old location, probably partially due to the environs not being nearly as accommodating, unique, or luxurious. However, on top of that, the food is quite expensive for what you get (i.e. fried rice that is pushing $16-20 vs. under $10 nearly everywhere else). The food is still fairly good, but I've had equal and better at much cheaper restaurants in the Twin Cities. The Pad Thai, fried rice, and Cream Cheese rolls are all good though. If prices were more in line with other similar places, this would likely be a 3.5-4 star. read more

Not really impressed by this restaurant. It is in a great location off Hwy 110 and close by other shops. For how much this stuff costs, I was expecting great tasting food. Don't get me wrong, those eggrolls were fire, but the salad I ordered...highly disappointed. It consisted of mostly cabbage. And who wants a mouth full of crunchy, bitter cabbage? Big no. Told the waitress I was splitting an entree with my friend, I wanted shrimp on my half, no shrimp on hers. Waitress said it wasn't a problem. The food comes out, shrimp is on both entrees. We were both charged full price even though we split it. Another friend asked if the egg rolls were made with pork and the waitress said no. She received egg rolls with pork in them. She was not offered a replacement. Food took over 45 minutes to come out and all five of us will never go back. I ended up spending over $25 on a crap meal with bad service. Love this place! They reopened in a different location, Mendota Heights. It's closer to me and has parking. This place is always semi busy - which is a good thing. Service is always super fast and friendly. Food is fucking amazing as I remember it was back when they were located in Loring Park, Minneapolis. The fried rice is fucking amazing. I always order it. We request for the to be medium heat/spice but it was very mild. That aside, both were generous is portions and ingredients. The curry was chockfull of chicken and veggies and they did not scrimp with the shrimp in making the fried rice. And, both entrees were tasty. I'm so happy my favorite Thai place is finally reopened ! This is the ONLY real Thai place that does not use MSG. Aside from that the dishes are Authentic and delicious. Cream cheese rolls are just as I remember, creamy, crunchy, but also chewy at the same time. Best pad Thai in town, hands down! I tried quite a few dishes while I was there. But the winner for me is always the HOLY BASIL FRIED RICE. It's actually spicy and the basil flavor is overwhelming awesome. Best with beef for the protein choice Decor is simple, elegant and reminiscent of the old location. Comfortable seating and a great new neighborhood spot. I will be here more than I need to be. We have not eaten yet and are upset already. We made a reservation and arrived a little early. Instead of taking us, people who just walked in were seated BEFORE us. My review will be updated with how the food is after the meal. It better be worth it. We may not be back, just based on this ridiculousness. So, now to the food. We ordered the King and I eggrolls. They came out super hot (my tongue is still bearing the brunt of that fact) and are tasty. The accompanying sauce is much too strong, so use it sparingly. Otherwise, you lose the flavor of the roll altogether. I ordered the mojito mocktail, which was ok, at best. It's described as having a "kick" because there are supposed to be Thai peppers in the mix. There was no kick and I tasted only mojito mix. My companion had the Two Brothers Red Rye Ale, which he liked. I don't drink beer, so I can't say anything more about it. For the mains we had the Garlic Thai Chili with chicken and the Pad Kee Mao with beef. Both were supposed to be four Thai chilies on the heat scale, which is supposed to be hot. Because we eat Thai regularly, we know what the different heat levels are and what we can handle. Typically, a four means you're eating very slowly because the food is pretty darn hot. The GTC was lacking in garlic, heat and flavor. It was a 1, at best, on the heat scale. Adding the chili sauce from the table gave you heat, but the sweet flavor of it overpowered all else...not worth it. The PKM was a 2 in heat level, at best. It was a much more flavorful dish, so the lack of heat was a bit more forgivable. We used to eat at King and I Thai when they were in Minneapolis and don't recall having an issue with flavor or heat level. At this point, we'll have to think long and hard about returning. While it's location is convenient to us, the level of enjoyment, or lack thereof, doesn't warrant a return. At times, we are generous and return to a spot once more to see if our experience was a fluke. This review will be updated, should we chance it. read more

Sweet and Sour tofu in my belly!!!! Sooooooooo scrumptious!! My friends and I enjoyed a weekday dinner at King and I Thai. For an appetizer, we had vegetarian egg rolls. They were so crispy and flavorful!!! My mouth is watery just writing about them! . For my entree, I had the sweet and sour tofu with rice. The tofu had this amazing crispy batter and the sauce was the perfect balance of sweet/sour! The portion was fairly decent as I had leftovers for lunch the next day. I thought the prices were a tad high but in the end it was worth it. The only bummer was they removed a vegetarian curry item from the appetizer options. I heard how amazing their Minneapolis menu was so I was excited to make the trip out to the suburbs and try it out. Nope. If you don't live nearby, don't bother making the 30 minute trip out here. I think the only thing I really enjoyed were the spring rolls. They are only available at certain times during the week so make sure to check that out in case you are craving them. I tried out their roasted hot pepper sauce with shrimp. I think I had 5 shrimp pieces altogether and the rest of my dish was sauce and peanuts. The pad seyu was okay - I have definitely tried better versions of the dish elsewhere. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant and service was so slow. We waited over 15 minutes just to order and then just sat there staring at our food for a long time waiting for our server to come back to close us out. The kitchen was really slow and really loud as well. I think they did more yelling than cooking it seemed. Again, its not terrible. If you live in the area, try it out. But don't make a trip out of it and expect the food and service that was once King and I Thai. read more

Our party of five was treated like royalty by our server, whose name I don't recall, but it was Friday night and the place was packed and she kept right on smiling through her braces despite the place being mobbed. Five stars for service. The food is good, and, in our case anyway, lacking the blistering (chili) heat that distinguished King and I Thai in its prior incarnation (in Minneapolis). But the chef seemed to have missed an item on the checklist because everything arrived at our table lacking not only "spicy" heat by also short a few British Thermal Units of energy. Look, I'm gonna admit that I'm not a huge fan of Thai food, but I have this idea that cooked food should be served hot, and this was just acceptable. Just. So I took off a star for that. I don't have a suggestion on how to fix this, I'm just saying that it all seemed like somehow the execution was excellent but that one thing (temperature) just wasn't quite right. We had several appetizers and several dishes and the entire group shared them, so I got to taste a number of items that I ordinarily avoid (like Pad Thai). I had a good time despite not being a fan of the cuisine of an entire civilization and so I'm promoting these guys as a good option for anybody in the southern suburbs who wants to try Thai food without the danger of being incinerated. I stopped in with a friend who loves this place and I would say I have to agree. It was a bit later on a Thursday evening and they had a good sit-down crowd as well as a healthy to-go order business. My friend recommended sharing a couple of dishes and we still took plenty of food home. We had the yellow curry with chicken and the broccoli fried rice. They were both great but I liked the curry better as the fried rice was a tad greasy. The service was great as we took awhile to decide on what we would share the the waitress came back to check on us regularly-while we were deciding as well as after the food arrived. My friend and I were also catching up so we had plenty of space to do so without feeling rushed or neglected. I will definitely come back if I find myself in the area again. read more

Beware if you are taking out. Our orders in the past were incorrect or today, we received 1/2 an order with a lie-saying it was normal. We have ordered this many many times and this was not normal. They apologised when we asked. It has happened many times. Yes their food is good-however they are not the only game in town. Today, the right thing to do for our inconvenience (disrupted dinner, a drive back and a wait) would have been to give us our order for free as an apology, to get us back. Or coupon our next order to get us back. We are done. Want to buy from a restaurant that cares about us and our business and they do not. There are many other Thai restaurants in the neighborhood. We haven't eaten here since the LaSalle Avenue days downtown. It took some adjusting to see the lit up sign in a suburban strip mall versus the former urban setting. The former location was like entering into a Thai sanctuary that was serene and chic. This location is very ordinary and brightly lit. Now, if I close my eyes and focus on the taste of that food, it was still excellent food. The service was excellent too. Very attentive and fast with our food order. I ordered a spicy chicken and vegetable dish. I ordered a 3 on the spice level (they go up to 4) and I had to ask for chili peppers to spice up my dish, which was ok as I would rather add spice than have it come too hot from the get go. I enjoy that they offer hot chili in the form of oil and dried flakes. We would definitely return as the food was excellent. I only took away 1 Star for the atmosphere. read more
