I picked up a black dress on 6/5 that I dropped off to be pressed for an event on 6/6. The dress was strapless on the right side and had two long straps on the left to be tied in a bow on the top of the shoulder. I tried the dress on around 1pm to match my accessories. The event was at 6pm. I noticed the right and left side of the dress was safety pinned to the paper hanger to hold the dress up as there was no strap on the right shoulder. I noticed a 3rd safety pin but wasn't sure why. I removed all of the pins to try the dress on. When I went to tie the bow on the shoulder there was only one strap. I looked around and saw it was on the floor. I realized the strap was pinned to the dress because it was no longer attached. I rushed back to the cleaners because I knew it was an easy fix. All they had to do was to sew it back on. I talked to a small man and he was puzzled. I told him if he sewed it back all would be good but that it was connected when I dropped it off. I did not drop the dress off to be cleaned in two pieces. He nodded and signaled to give him time & he would fix it. A larger Asian woman proceeded to yell at the man for a few seconds then turned her anger towards me. She began yelling at me. I told her to stop yelling at me. She told me she was going to make me pay $20, still screaming. I calmly told her I wasn't. I remained calm and noncombatant because I just needed my dress fixed. The man fixed it in a matter of 3-5 minutes. The lady the took it from him and brought it to the counter. She started yelling at me again saying that she was making me pay $20. I told her I absolutely would not. She had the top portion of my dress on her side of the counter and I had the bottom on my side. We were at an impasse while she continued to scream at me and the man in the back. I told her that I was not paying and going to call the police. That is when the small man finally spoke up and started yelling at her. I assume he was telling her to give me my dress so that I didn't call the police. The lady and I exchanged some very unkind words she also called me a liar. I was fed up with her yelling at me. I walked out assuring her I would never return and would write a review about my experience. I guess had I checked the reviews on Yelp first I would have never gone it. The cleaners is 10 walk from my house. I try and make it a habit to frequent the neighborhood establishments. I lived here for four years and have never had a bad experience at any of the shops or restaurants. read more

I have been a client in King cleaners for 20 years. I had a pair of trousers altered today. They did a really poor job. When I went to ask them to redo it or give me a refund back the owner got really angry and told me "God dammit." When I got all worked up for the treatment I received, he told me to be quiet because it is his store." Also, he told me he was not going to give me a refund. I had to call my husband and just because he is a guy he gave me the refund back. The guy is really rude, and does not how to treat a woman. He is a very nasty and abnoxious human being. Oh, and I am attaching pictures of the horrible job they did with my hem. And the guy kept saying that it was a good job that the fabric is at fault.... Despicable! read more

I used King exclusively until the management changed recently. I continued to use them with mixed results until today. I picked up a sport coat they had dry cleaned only to find that every single button on the sleeves and the front were broken. They refused to fix it and tried to tell me I had to pay them to fix the buttons they broke. It was very disappointing as I would otherwise love to support a local business down the street. I took my comforter in to be cleaned. There was some dog smell. I also asked a corner to be sewn. Quote was $60. I took it home. It smelled the same. Strings were hanging where they sewed the corner. I threw it in my washing machine it smelled better. I could have washed it myself. Sloppy Job. They argued with me only gave me $5 credit bk to credit card after speaking with 2 employees. No creases means no creases. I appreciate that they pressed to take them out but the only thing that takes out a pressed crease is to re-launder. Even had a tag that said "no creases." The clothes were clean, tho - for $15. I'll try another cleaner and maybe give this one another try with something no critical. read more

I've used King Cleaners for a few years now and I love their service, especially the 1 day dry cleaning. They've also done a ton of other work for my wife and I; including fixing dress shoes, mending clothes, and altering dresses for my wife. Most importantly though, ...I dropped clothes off on Friday, and forgot to pick them up on Saturday. Well today is Monday and I am flying to Africa tonight and needed my suits and dress shirts, however, the entire DC area is closed due to the snowstorm. I was pretty bent out of shape because I absolutely needed the clothes for work, and my flight appears to still be on time since it's a late flight. So, I ended up getting ahold of Suki on the phone at home and she had her son drive her in despite the SNOWSTORM... so I could make my flight with all of my clothes!!!! I have had great experiences at this shop! they are way more than just a cleaners. They give you great service and good quality of work. Further down below, I also posted my original post about the two cleaners on king street near the Austin grill. But as of 3 weeks ago I had my maid of honor dress altered here. They are def above $100 for the alterations (considering I have a 3 layered satin strapless gown that must be taken in and hemmed) . But I appreciate the education i was given by the owner on the style of dress I purchased and why it cost what it did. Did a pmt plan w/ the owner and I will be picking up my dress before the end of this month! I cant wait to see how amazing it looks..you can trust these ladies. I even found out later they have done our shirts for my companies annual conference...breathe easy here b/c they do great work and wonders on wedding dresses for sure! :) my review about this shop on google+ back in Dec 2012: I called around for about 30 min and finally got in touch w/ this shop. Let me say the owner of the store she was polite, passionate about her job and very patient! She told me has been there from 1982 and is a seamstress not just a cleaning shop. Where many stores in Old town do not do their alterations in house but she does all day everyday! She helped me w/ my fitting free of charge and for her amazing service I will definitely be back for my alterations in the future. I will give an updated review on that experience as well. *Important Note: However do not EVER waste your time going to the store directly across the street!!! Although they say they do alterations on the window, their customer service is DEPLORABLE. I asked her if she did fittings and alterations she said she was busy and then when my friend w/ me asked her well do you do zipper replacements the woman points to a shop down the street and didn't even have the common sense to say no I don't but the store downstairs does. OMG The lady was so RUDE and yelled at me. I gave her two pairs of Eileen Fisher 's pants to be hem. These pants are 200.00 each. When I picked them up the thread color didn't match the pants and the stitching was crooked through the entire hem. Don't go there. Beware!!!!!! read more

I purchased a once worn wedding gown at Fabulous Frocks in Alexandria and went to have it cleaned before my big day at King Cleaners based on a recommendation. The price for cleaning was over $200 and unfortunately the King cleaners left a stain (that looked like a burn mark) on the front of my gown. I did not see the stain until I brought the dress to be altered, and the cleaners would not discuss the issue unless I brought the dress back (which due to the timing, I could not). They do great work and very friendly. Dry cleaning always done on time and professional. Also had couple suits that needed to be tailored and the lady that does the alterations did a great job. If you're looking for a reliable dry cleaner in the Old Town area, King's will serve your needs. They do good work and their prices are in line with the area. They are quite flexible about having things ready when you need them. Two downsides: parking is always a challenge. If you live within walking distance, you'll love them. If you're looking for a parking spot to dash in and grab two suits on a Saturday morning, you'll hate yourself. Second: their alternations often leave something to be desired. Thankfully that 'something to be desired' is usually a hem too long -- better than high watered pants, but still... Have had to get pants rehemmed at other locations who see more eye to eye with me with respect to where your pants should hit. I joined yelp so I could complain about this business. What a nightmare for me. First when I went to pick up my 'tailoring' she (Delmy) would not let me use the rest room. Told me to go to another store. I went to the new nice coffee shop down the street. (forgot the name). When I came back and tried on my dress which was still baggy in the top, she told me I was too flat and to buy a bigger bra! She said if I sent it back to the tailor she would have to charge me more. Yesterday afternoon, my aunt and I spent a lovely day shopping in Old Town. We browsed and enjoyed the lovely shops filled with unique and beautiful items as we chatted with neighbors and new acquaintances. While wrapping up this day we walked along King Street to go visit one of my favorite desert shops. As we walked along we noticed King Cleaners and their sign that stated they offer Shoe Repair and Alterations. Immediately, I ran to my car and took out my favorite pair of heels that needed some repair, as I'm still a relatively new resident of Old Town and desperately needed to find a new shoe repairer. I went inside the cleaners and walked up to the counter and said, "Hello, how are you? I noticed you offer shoe repair and wonder if you could tell me what the price would be to repair this shoe." In an unpleasant and irritated tone, the woman behind the counter said, "I can't help you. You should go to the shoe repair on the corner". Taken aback I said, "Excuse me? I don't understand." She responded, "If you want a price on the repair you should go to the Shoe Repair on the corner. He can give you a price. We don't do shoe repairs on the premises. We send our shoes out for repair and will not know the price of the repair until they are returned." I said, "Okay, well can you give me an estimate on what you believe the repair may cost?" Again, she said, "No". She then came from around the counter to show me where the other shoe repairer was while simultaneously escorting me (and my aunt) out of the door. Bewildered, I found myself questioning what just happened. Why would someone refuse to accept my business and instead push me on to "someone" else? What was it about me that warranted her behavior? Was it that I'm an educated African-American woman with natural hair that's in twists wearing designer clothing and jewelry? Either way, I was left feeling humiliated and discarded. In this day and age where cultural sensitivity is a hot button topic, I was left feeling as if it wasn't a topic that was being discussed at all. Shame on you, King Cleaners, for your failure to display cultural sensitivity or human kindness. Shame on you for making me feel like I was living in 1956 instead of 2016. Shame on you for your gross display of disparate, kind-less and cruel behavior of African Americans based on your negative perception. I was referred to King Cleaners by a friend who spoke highly of their great service (both for cleaning and tailoring), and I wasn't disappointed. I took my intricate all-lace wedding dress in to be hemmed and she did an amazing job! This was no ordinary straight hem (or I would have done it myself), and however she did it maintained the beautiful lace edge all the way around. I couldn't even see a seam where she had adjusted it. She did the work in a timely manner and at a fairly reasonable rate considering the intensive, detailed work she did (and the location - its Old Town, people!). read more
