Before I bought my Catalina 30', I took it to King Harbor Boat Yard to have it hoisted out of the water and inspected. They made the process easy. The bottom needed painting. They did an excellent job. It ended up the boat needed a lot more work. King Harbor Boat Yard did it all, for the right price and in less time than they estimated. I have been back now three times for other work to be completed, and I wouldn't come back if I wasn't happy with the work. I just can't imagine trusting my boat to anyone else and can't recommend them highly enough. read more

Had an installation on a Thursday. Failed two days later. I was told it's my problem.

I was in a real precarious situation, my shaft seal broke in the channel in Redondo and water was rushing in. We temporarily stoppedd it with a toilet wax ring. Called Steve and told him we could sink quickly making our way to the yard. He had men sanctioned on the ready on the hoist as we arrived. The team pulled us out of before we took on too much water. Steve and his team went through the boat, put a parts list together and gave us a reasonable estimate. Francisco was the mechanic on the project, not any easy job; confined space little room to work. Francisco was methodical and organized and got it done. They also did a great job on my Max Prop. Everyone is very friendly including they yard guys, Eric who has been there eight years was very helpful. I spoke with Raphael who gave me a estimated time to repair the boat, he asked that I call in two weeks to scheduled. I called and spoke to a woman, Glory, who said Raphael was not there. I asked her basic questions and she did not know any of the answers. i.e how much is the average time to fix a starter. I called the next day and asked to speak with Raphael. This time the owner answered and said that Raphael doe not scheduled jobs. I said I wanted to ask him something else, he said Raphael does not give estimates either. I said i wanted to ask him details about the repair. The owner said Raphael was fired and that he did not want customers like me. No clue what the guys issues are. read more

I have been a customer for many years. However, this time I wanted to use my own labor and paint and have KHMC do the haul out and power wash. For this service they have me lowest priority for pulling my boat out and I was only to get 1/2 to 1/4 a day to work on my boat. I booked this in advance but they have a priority system for "Lay Day" customers. I would have been okay with this had I know in advance I would be the last boat in the yard that day due the the priority system they have set up. My prior relationship with KHMC did not matter a bit. The pricing for the haul out was competitive. If you bring your own paint it is $60/gallon corking fee (okay I think) but the customer service was really bad. I kept having to call them and each time I got scheduled out. This was Nov 2020 and it was busy in MDR and at KHMC. I'm going to try and not use them again and take my boat to Cerritos Boat Yard in Wilmington a 3 hour trip but I'm hoping I will get some reasonable service and haul out times. If you don't use your own labor, I assume you will get better service as I have gotten in the past. I'm giving a bad score because I was not made aware that I was a second class customer for haul out and I was going to be charged for 1 full day on the hard when I was only able to get 1/2 day in. My haul out day was Thursday so to add insult, I was going to need to pay for Sat and Sunday because I didn't' have enough time to finish my boat due to the Thurs late haul out. KHMC did let me cancel without charge without any problem. This may be my last time using KHMC but we are running out of options and KHMC knows this. I'm PO'ed at the KHMC management who could care less about my problems/thousands in prior business and are billing all the hard time they can in 24 hr increments even though they don't put boats in on the weekends. read more

I called them twice for rates and each time I got different rates,first time they said they charge173.oo for cleaning the growth off my boat mandatory per city of RB I could not do it myself.. on top of 259 haul out,and 144 per day yard charge,, then the 2nd call they said they would charge me a 60.oo per gallon surcharge for using my own paint (my labor) so basically I will pay a bit more and just do it at eddies, in my own area ! its not worth sailing around Palos Verdes just to save Literally a few dollars so that's a big 2 thumbs down!! what the older gentleman behind the counter quotes you and what the Lady quotes you are vastly different read more

I had my boat hauled and the bottom painted. These cheap chaps "forgot" to use a primer in some areas and just covered "paint sicK" paint in others.. Less than two months after the boat was put into the water, and the diver reported sheets of paint were sloughing off. The marine center hauled the boat for free, but was unwilling to fix their mess, unless of course if I paid them to do it. I know of at least one other power boar owner who had a fairly similar experience with these folks. Oh, and their little hardware store is the saddest, emptiest store I have ever seen. From my experience, this place is OK. The guys who have done the hands-on work have been quite good. And Stephanie (handles phones) is polite and thorough. The problem is the management. Responsive and polite when selling, not so responsive or thorough when work is in-process or done, and belligerent and defensive when there is a complaint or dispute. Don't assume they will do the right thing--get everything in writing (detailed/specific) before authorizing work to prevent disagreements over what was talked about. Prices are too high, and I always wind up feeling like they are looking out a lot more for themselves than they are for their customers (which is probably a function of their being the only yard in the harbor). I think it's important to notice that many of the positive reviews are from people out of the Redondo area who have used them once...often by people with very few posted reviews on Yelp. Despite the fact that they are the only marine center in Redondo / King Harbor, you don't see a lot of reviews (especially positive reviews) from the many locals who actually dock nearby. I am using them a second time now after a failure of a stuffing box I had several weeks ago They were righton with that fix said they would be there in 2 hrs and were there in 1.75 hrs problem fixed and a few others too. Went back a week later for a linkage problem. Same great service. I home port in Sn Diego but for future work I may travel north to use tthem. The mechanjc Paco is awesome. Not DIY friendly in any way. I brought a 25' sailboat to the shipyard to bottom paint work on it myself for a six day stay. Although the cost to have it stay there was in line with other shipyards I've been to, it was the ridiculously bad management and lack of concern that makes this shipyard next to have the EPA shut them down. 1) Cramped quarters. The boats are anywhere from 3 ft to 5 ft hull to hull from each other, at least during my stay. 2) Paint over-spray and dust everywhere. The yard didn't adhere to vacuum or paint control standards and the staff was open sanding and spraying bottom paint without vacuum use or tarps. Paint was all over my boat and the ground. 3) No Bathroom use without getting the staff person to let you in each time. This was an insane attitude of distrust from the management, stating they don't trust the clients to not lose the key or to sell it to a homeless person...really? When I asked about the policy, the manager just got angry. My son was waiting ten minutes while the staffer was chatting away with another client, until I came up and interrupted them. 4) Ruined my bottom paint job due to lack of consideration and knowledge. Their lift operator put paper on their straps so that it didn't get bottom paint on them, why? The end result was the bottom paint was smeared all over the sides of my boat with large blue strap marks. I basically have to do the job all over again at a different yard. Why is this there fault? If one day for drying is not enough time to allow the paint to fully dry so that their preferred launch method doesn't tear it off or smear it, then please inform the client they need at least X number of dry days before launch. They knew dry time was an issue, thus the paper, but didn't care to consult with me, apparently due to not being their responsibility? Just a very bad company due to be poorly run, at least for the DIY boater. They have an all too common belief that the boat owners need them and thus deserve limited considerations while there. read more

Avoid this yard at all costs. I wasted $7400. on stripping and bottom painting my boat. At first bottom cleaning after their work the new paint was flaking off. Had the boat hauled out again, repainted and again the paint was flaking off at first cleaning. Now I'm hundreds of miles away and no recourse except to pay another yard to do it correctly. I was present for their second try at painting the hull and they didn't even follow the directions on the can regarding the "wet window" for additional coats. The final insult was that a thru hull they installed leaked and their incompetent work almost sank my boat. read more
