When we arrived a bit after 7PM, we had quite some trouble finding parking and ended up having to park a couple of blocks away after circling for 20 minutes. Walking in, the place wasn't too busy, perhaps 50% capacity. We were interested in ordering the fried cheese curds, but the server told us they weren't battered in house, so we passed on them. Smoked Fish Salad (Market Price, $18.99) - This is a pretty salad - all ingredients are arranged in rows along the dish. Mixing things together is a bit of a pain, but I appreciate the dressing on the side to add to preference. The dressing is an interesting blend of mayo and other ingredients, perhaps BBQ sauce, that make it slightly tangy and very sweet. There's an undertone of smokiness throughout, which tastes somewhat like liquid smoke rather than the dressing actually being smoked. It is on the sweeter side of dressings. Other than greens, there's a row of wild rice, dark and snappy, completely broken cultivated rice. There's also a bit of house smoked trout, nice and smoky. (4/5) Classic Wild Rice Burger ($16.99) - This is one of the tallest burgers I've seen in quite a while, mostly due to the inclusion of fresh vegetables including onion and tomato, and alfalfa sprouts. For some reason instead of using larger tomatoes, they use small roma tomatoes, including three small slices. They also used red onion that's chopped into a variety of different shapes instead of whole slices. It's really strange - I guess this saves on cost? Unfortunately smaller pieces means things fall out while eating. The patty is larger than the bun. It has plenty of broken wild rice bits giving some additional crunch and that signature wild rice taste. It's charred on the griddle well and it keeps its structure, not falling apart or becoming mushy at any point. I love how it's distinctively a rice burger and doesn't try to be a meat substitute. Two slices of American cheese are melted on top that gives some fattiness to the dish. The bun is toasted without butter and there's a flavorful garlic mayo spread on the top. It would be nice if they had also applied the sauce to the bottom bun as I found the patty to not have enough moisture or fat incorporated. The burger comes with some thin commercial fries. There aren't any issues with the level of fry and they are otherwise unremarkable. (4/5) Fitger's Brewhouse serves some solid good old fashioned Midwestern American food. Not much else to say. Man, where do I start? Went there with my girlfriend and my nephew, my nephew had a rootbeer float, while my girlfriend and I got a couple of burgers and an order of fries. First off, the fries there are home cut, they push them through a little machine; they were awesome! Perfectly prepared, and I'm picky about fries. I won't order unless they're made in house and these didn't disappoint. Next up: the burger. Someone mentioned that they are similar to In-n-Out, and while I can't comment on that, if that is the case, In-n-Out must have AWESOME burgers. The buns were perfect, golden and fresh tasting, not crumby like some other buns. The meat itself is phenomenal. I had a mushroom and swiss and I had to hold myself back to make sure I enjoyed it. Honestly, I have had darn near EVERY hamburger in the area, and this place is a contender for best burgers. Rivals Big Daddies and the Anchor. Ice cream selection was also outstanding! I had a sundae and every bite was heavenly! The decor of the place feels like what a diner from the 50s would look like when they were envisioning the future. Everything is pretty cute. I am very pleased with my visit to the King of Creams. As soon as I walked in the building, I was greeted with a warm smile and "hello" by one of the workers. Then, I proceeded to order the Philly Cheesesteak since I heard only good things about it. I was VERY happy with it. Very flavorful and fresh. However, the biggest reason why I enjoyed my visit here was the one-on-one conversation with the owner. He was very polite, friendly and humble and made me feel very welcomed to his restaurant. I needed a treat and saw this was open...so I stopped in. What a great surprise! I had a delicious sundae and coffee...then I saw a big mound of washed potatoes! They cut one up and make you a big cup of fresh fries. They were WONDERFUL. Everything was reasonably priced. There is a diner quality, where you order at the window. My next stop will be for lunch. I think we were the first customers inside but somehow we were order number 3 for the day! Ordering can be done either in person or on two convenient kiosks for the less social. Since this is fast food, the chicken isn't fried to order; instead, it's fried in batches, so the food is just assembled and handed out. Our order took only about 2 or 3 minutes to come out. Classic ($8) - As the name implies, this is a pretty classic fried chicken sandwich. First there's a sizable boneless thigh, battered and fried. It's a lighter crisp, more delicate than the typical breading and closer to tempura than traditional fried chicken. The dark meat still has a decent moisture level and the exterior fry tastes like the beef tallow it's fried in. There's crisp ripped iceberg lettuce leaves, some pickles, and a bunch of mayo on a slightly buttery and toasted bun. The bun still remains mostly soft to encapsulate the chicken and prevent anything from falling out. While the chicken itself isn't the most juicy, there's enough fattiness from the mayo to help things out. (4/5) Nashville Hot ($9) - This sandwich is the same format with slightly different ingredients. The fried boneless thigh is identical, but this time it's doused with hot chili oil and then topped with plenty of homemade ranch to help cool things down. The sandwich overall is slightly smoky and is only lightly spicy. I'd consider it on the very mild end of the things, giving only a slight warming of the mouth. There's so much sauce that it drips down the sandwich copiously, leaving a small puddle in the paper tray below. (4/5) I didn't find the fried chicken sandwiches here to be anything special, but neither do they really have any flaws. Located…read moreconveniently in the center of Canal Park, we stopped by on a sunny Wednesday early afternoon, hoping to score some of the best sandwiches in town. Even though this was well past lunch time at 2PM, the outside patio was packed and there was a line of 10 people or so to contend with to order at the register. Due to how busy it was, our food took about 20 minutes to arrive. The Squealy Dan, Porketta ($16) - Unlike most other restaurants with Iron Range Porketta, Northern Waters slices their porketta thinly instead of pulling the pork apart. It has a pleasant spiced flavor and the texture feels as if it's cured rather than roasted. It's relatively tender, and while they give a decent amount of meat, it's completely overshadowed by the heavy spicy quality of the black pepper and the acidity and vegetalness of the crunchy pepperoncini. There's a bit of melted gooey provolone on top of the porketta. While nice, there's not enough to balance out the peppers. This is all on a crusty almost baguette-like hero roll, toasty and warm. The sandwich is served with a side dip that's essentially black pepper and pepperoncini water. Definitely not needed given how overwhelming those elements are in the sandwich. (3/5) Pastrami Mommy ($19) - I haven't had bison pastrami before. Now I know why it's not very common - it's way too lean and dry compared to beef pastrami. Still, it's nicely spiced and peppery, and there's not much of the bison gamey flavor since it's cooked out from the curing. There's a little bit of mayo underneath and some mustard on top, but it's not enough moisture or fat in my opinion to counteract the leanness of the bison. While there are some slices of provolone above the meat, they are served cold. I feel like melting it with the pastrami on the griddle would do wonders to help develop some more unctuousness. It's also served on cold rye - perhaps toasting with some butter would also help. Otherwise, the sandwich is just too dry and lean for my tastes. (3/5) I feel like I ordered the wrong items. I probably should have gone with some of the seafood sandwiches, but I found it strange they only serve Atlantic salmon rather than local lake fish. In the end, I appreciate that Northern Waters Smokehaus makes most of their meats in house, but after trying their food, I feel like it's more hype than substance. Eggs were poached perfectly, the hollandaise was rich and thick and not broken. The potatoes were potatoes. Cooked and lightly seasoned. I had the chicken fried steak, and it was crispy, not too bready, and cooked wonderfully. The sausage country gravy was how it is supposed to be done. Thick, meaty, full of flavor, not overly salted. It was almost too much for me, and i love flavor. Hash browns were well cooked, and the over easy eggs were amazing. I haven't had an over easy egg cooked that spectacularly in ages. The yolk totally uncooked, and even slightly separated from the white. The white fully cooked. Beautifully runny, all over my hash browns, with more gravy and a touch of hot sauce. Reminded me of the little diner i went to as a kid in Grygla. I might drive up to Duluth just to return with no other reason.
