we were up here for our annual anniversary getaway. This place is located a stones throw away from the lift bridge in the Dewitt Seitz building. Our experience started off on a bit of a sour note. We were a walk-up (no reservation), so we were put on the waiting list, which was fine. We said, 'That's cool, we will just have a cocktail at the bar.' The hostess stated, 'We can't.' We went over to the Mexican bar and waited. One thing I noticed was that there were three empty tables. We waited and came back, and lo and behold, the same tables were still empty, and remained so for basically the entire duration of our dinner. The food was fine, nothing really stood out per se. The steak was a bit under-seasoned, and the salad my wife had was ok. I would say that the cocktails were well-prepared. I completely understand that one is paying for the location, but I honestly would think one would get something a little better than what we were served.

Lake Ave Restaurant is one of my go to places in Duluth. I have been dining there for more than a decade and I'm not sure why I haven't posted before. They have a creative drink menu, friendly staff, and their ever changing menu always has something delightful to eat, even for the vegetarians and pescatarians in the crowd.

Such a beautiful place with innovative food and a rotating menu. Excellent service. We loved everything about it!!

Pork chop dinner
Barbara H.

We stopped for lunch here the other day. I ordered the pork chop and my husband had the pork masala, with a bottle of red wine. Both were good dishes. The pork chop had more fat on it than I'd have liked, but tasted good...the dish has an interesting combination of ingredients and is spicy. Service was good. We parked on the street as we weren't aware we could use the lot. We would try this restaurant again sometime.

Red snapper

This should be a 3.5, but here we are... We visited in high-tourist time. This likely influences our experience, but we found the service to be the best part. Overall, it was timely and courteous. The food was fine-- my red snapper was a nice variety of flavors but there are few times I would ADD salt! The tomatoes added some zing, but it shouldn't save the whole plate!! The caesar salad was okay-good, and the zucchini hummus had mixed reviews at our table. The table was sticky and silverware was dirty, so we felt it was subpar experience. Drink menu was a nice variety, but not extraordinary. Almost too much We'd probably go elsewhere next time in Duluth. Meh on our end, but maybe you will have better luck?

Kids French toast, Breakfast sampler

This restaurant is a real jewel of Duluth. It is farm to table with incredible sourcing for everything. Their bacon is to die for! We love their classic breakfast and my kid loved the French toast sticks. For dinner you can't go wrong! So many delicious items. The Mac and cheese is out of this world. But so is that other more artistic food. It has a friendly and attentive staff and great local owners. It has a patio and a beautiful room right next to Lake Superior walk and the famous Ariel Bridge. No wait and I promise you will have a relaxing meal. Plus the bar really knows what they are doing. It is a must visit restaurant!

Salt & Pepper Calamari (it's got a kick!)

Wow, what a hidden gem! Everything was so delicious - you could tell it was made from scratch. Highly recommend the calamari, steak and the cheesecake!

Burger and fries & across the table is the duck tamal "a deconstructed duck tamale"
Justin C.

So we have eaten across the country and seek local tables for area flare. Unfortunately we could have had this quality at a brew pub but guessing better. Duck Tamal: over cooked to the point it required a knife! Yes we are talking about duck breast & masa with a relish garnish. $33 Burger: simple, basic and rarely cooked. $21 Ambience was charming and pleasant. Service was mediocre but fair. Save your money for other local restaurants.

Outside of restaurant from parking lot
Carlie A.

Came on a Wednesday night and was pleasantly surprised to learn it was "wine Wednesday" so all bottles and glasses of wine were half price! Friendly service, and good food. Gluten free and vegetarian items marked clearly on the menu. Easy parking for the entire complex the restaurant is in right next to the building, but would imagine this might be different on a Friday or Saturday night. Would absolutely go back if in the area again!

Everything was presented beautifully. The prices are quite high and the menu is very Scandinavian. If you're not a seafood fan, the choices are limited. The service was the biggest challenge. We had a reservation for 6 at 7:45. When we arrived, the host told us the party before us was still at the table an hour after getting their bill. We wound up waiting 25 minutes to be seated. No concessions were offered for the wait. We ordered drinks (a soda and a lemonade) and it took another 20 minutes to get them. When the drinks arrived at 8:35, we ordered. It took almost 40 minutes for the food to arrive. Again - we ordered four sandwiches and two appetizers. Because we were seated so late, the restaurant was clearing out - I can't imagine how long the wait is when it's busy. Our server was an infrequent guest at our party. I might come back just to have that lobster roll again, but nothing else was so outstanding that it would be worth the trip.

The beer selection was a little smaller than we expected, but there was still a nice variety of styles, so everyone in our group found something they enjoyed. The only small downside was that the Brussels sprouts were still a little undercooked for our taste, but everything else was excellent and more than made up for it. Excellent brisket, fish n chips, and build your own burger! The garlic aioli and IPA mustard sauces were definitely memorable. Overall, it's a great spot for good food, craft beer, and a fun atmosphere located right on the pier. We'd definitely come back!

Very soft, hot pretzels, and the queso was thick and loaded with flavor. My husband had the Canal Park red lager and really enjoyed it. My main dish was the birria tacos, which were quite good but could have used more cheese. Salsa and chips were fine, too. My husband had jalapeño popper burger with fries, and really liked it. Checkout was fast and pleasant.

We went to the Lake Ave. location in Canal Park since it was walking distance. Walking into the establishment you are greeted with the aromas breakfasts being made and a hostess who was friendly. We opted to eat outside under the covered patio to enjoy the day. The menu has plenty of options to suit one's fancy - pancakes, waffles, pecan/cinnamon rolls for those with a sweet-tooth, and of course any number of savory plates for the rest of us. Making an eating decision can prove difficult. the Huevos Rancheros looked appealing as did the breakfast sandwich, and the brisket eggs Benedict. I opted for what was behind door number four and picked the country fried steak and eggs. Much to my delight, instead of the usually Sysco food distributor breaded chopped steak topped with a gravy from an institutional food can - They actually used a rib-eye for the steak, and homemade gravy. I also had the option of toast or a pancake. I always love me some decent rye toast, but today was a day to mix it up, and the pancake was nice, and not too big. I also liked that there was an option for blueberry syrup, or Maple syrup. The other item ordered was the Greek Omelet, my wife truly enjoyed it, and they also cooked her hash-browns to order which she appreciated (she likes them really, really crispy). I this will definitely be a must have place to eat every time we are in Duluth. I highly recommend this place.

I think the boozy brunch crowd comes in late morning. We were seated quickly and ordered breakfast. We got the usual pancakes, French toast, etc. Everything was good. Best ever? No, but pretty solid and the portions were generous. The kids ate it, which is most important. The service was good, too. It was a bit hectic for the staff because they sat like 8 parties of 4 all at once - all with kids, so it was a lot for them to manage, but they pulled through and we were well taken care of. I heard it gets packed by mid-late morning, so if you can, get there early!
