My friend and I came in for a quick lunch yesterday. The food was descent and came out fast. There was only one person working in the kitchen and one person outside who is the waitress and the cashier. When my friend and I finished eating, it took awhile to get our check. I'm a little overdue but decided at the last minute to stop by King Palace for lunch. It has been my favorite neighborhood spot. The food is always consistent. It was a few minutes past noon on a Friday (busy time for takeout), and the main dining area was full. I sat at a booth on the opposite wall. The lady, a long time employee greeted me and brought a lunch menu. She's always friendly to me. One of these days, I will have to try something else but again, went to my go-to meal, Sweet and Sour Pork with fried rice. This time the pork was crisp and much tastier. I always ask for the sauce on the side, in fact the lady remembered my request. Of course, the hot sour soup is always excellent and well balanced. If you havent tried this place, you should. Today I dined in at this local chinese restaurant in San Ramon. I've gotten take out from here in the past, but decided to sit down and eat today. One of my favorite things about this place is they offer $10.95 lunch specials 7 days a week! Most places only do lunch specials during the week, not weekends. I ordered the Mongolian beef lunch special and it was definitely a hit! The service is very fast. The ambiance was a bit dry. When my dad decided to walk up to the register to add something to our order, she told him to sit down. Not even politely! Keep in mind, she was running around the restaurant, so he was trying to not inconvenience her to have to come over to take the order, but the reaction wasn't what I would ever expect. Here's an analogy I would give. Sometimes you meet a very attractive person w/sh*t personality. You'd probably be more forgiving (don't feel ashamed to admit to this) w/certain behaviors. But when the person is unattractive AND sh*t personality? Well, this is that person in restaurant form. If you're looking to experience sh*tty service and mediocre food. Sure, come check this place out. If you want better tasting Chinese food w/even marginally pleasant staff, ANY restaurant in the Tri-Valley area is better than King Palace. We used to go here once a week for years, it was our favorite Chinese restaurant- but oh how the mighty have fallen. Ingredient quality has gone way down, portions have decreased substantially and the service from the older lady has become abysmal, it's as if she hates the customers that sit down. In the last 6 months we've only gone back four times (normally it would have been 24+) and each of the four times we've had mediocre food and an unpleasant experience. One time we ordered the pea sprouts and there was sand and a few small rocks in it. I almost chipped a tooth eating it, and when we showed it to the waitress (older lady) - she said "You can only wash it so much, do you want it or not?" We said we didn't and she took it back - yet still charged us and adamantly refused to take it off the bill. The older lady never writes down your order and two out of the last four visits she told the cooks to make the wrong items, then angrily argued with us about it - saying we absolutely we wrong and trying to get us to take the items. After years of loyal patronage and literally hundreds of visits - and giving them four more tries over a 6 month period to see try to rekindle the flame and give them another shot - we're done. I love King Palace. San Ramon is my hometown and I remember when King Palace was new a little over a decade ago. I used to come here with my family. I hadn't been back in years, and recently came here with my mom for a Saturday lunch. I love how they have lunch special pricing even on weekends, not a lot of restaurants do that. I got the Honey Walnut Prawns which comes with fried rice, and hot & sour soup for only $10.95! Can't beat those prices on this side of town! The food is delicious and definitely hits the spot when you have Chinese food cravings. I'll be back again soon! read more

Stopped by for a quick bite. No tables filled and half the restaurant looked like a make-shift kid's area with Legos and other toys on the table. But plenty of takeout business while we were there. We were seated and ordered house special pan fried noodles, moo shu pork and sweet and sour fish. The fish was the highlight, albiet a little too much sauce. Noodles were beautifully presented but too Americanized for our taste. Moo shu pork was fine although the "pancakes" were a little dry. Too be expected if there's not enough churn in their supply. But the leftover moo shu pork made for an excellent topping on a salad the next day. Prices were fine, nothing crazy. They had a 3 dish minimum, $10.75 each special, but we didn't find enough on there that we wanted. The last thing I'll say is that I was exceptionally thirsty after the meal. I don't know if it was too much salt or msg, but something made me feel dehydrated! read more

This place has everything. Excellent food , great service and an ambience with Asian art on the walls and decorative carpet. It looks like a husband and wife team and you can tell they work hard and put love into their food and business. I been coming here every week for over 2 months and the food is consistently good and you can tell they have a good amount of loyal customers and the place is busy . I do think they should raise their prices a little for the quality of healthy and traditional Chinese food you get . They are in an expensive part of town and the rent and overhead must be really high . We need to support our community Chinese restaurant in this area . read more

At King's Palace, expect a cheap, tasty, no frills meal that will satisfy your cravings. It's a small restaurant with a few booths and a few large tables. You know it's legit when you spot the owner's kids having their own table to do homework or play with toys on. The place does look a bit older but still clean. Lunch deals are a steal. Your entree + carb + sweet and sour soup for $11!!! Regular entrees, which are large portions you can share family style, are around $14-15. My favorites are: hot & spicy chicken, salt & pepper spare ribs, and golden sand fried rice. I've also had their beef & broccoli, mapo tofu, walnut shrimp, and various vegetable dishes and they are all delicious. After a month of shelter in place and the closure of our normal go to Chinese restaurants until May, I found through Yelp, that King Palace was open for take out. King Palace is a Cantonese Restaurant located in the Safeway shopping center in the Dougherty Valley neighborhood of San Ramon. I called in my order with the menu items pictured on Yelp. The dish that I really wanted (salted fish meat pie) was not available. Here are the ordered items: Salt and pepper fish filet 3 stars breaded like American fish sticks, just ok Half roast duck 4.5 stars very good Garlic sautéed pea sprouts 4 stars good portions Pork and dried tofu stir fry 3 stars Pickled mustard greens and pork belly 4.5 stars best dish of the dishes ordered. The restaurant itself is not big and the set up is for take out service now. Easy in and out. Plenty of parking in the large shopping center. Even being clear across town, it's another Chinese restaurant option for me. $53 before tip. read more

Your local Chinese neighborhood restaurant that does a good job. We love its west lake beef soup, house special braised tofu, royal chicken, shredded pork with eggplant. All dishes have wok chi! Soft/Crisp on the outside, soft and hot on the inside. Yum! Very reasonable price also. read more

King of crap restaurants! You read it right. King Palace is truly awful! I last ate here in November 2015. If memory serves, I thought the food was mediocre then. Fast forward to last week, I was chatting with a friend and he raved about his recent experience here. Thinking they might have changed owners, I decided to take my family and a friend here for dinner on 02/09/2019. What transpired was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Not only the service was bad, but the food was just atrocious. We walked in at around 1830 hours. The place was about half full. Three of the staff were busy at the cash register. One of them got off the phone a couple minutes later, looked at us, and just kept walking. It took another few minutes before we were acknowledged and seated. About 10 minutes later, we ordered six dishes and rice for three people (our friend doesn't eat carbs). At 1858 hours, our first dish (Salt and Pepper Fish Fillet) arrived. The fish nuggets didn't taste right, as they had a hint of muddy flavor that was confirmed by my brother. The batter was very similar to that of frozen fishsticks. The application of MSG was extremely liberal, which made me very thirsty after eating it. The next two dishes (Sizzling Platter Black Pepper Beef and Chicken with String Beans) arrived at 1908 and 1911 hours respectively. The wait between dishes was pretty lengthy and during which I observed other diners who came in after us received their food first. At this point, I started to think our meal was not going to get any better. The sizzling platter dish was pretty greasy. The beef was sliced extremely thin. They put a lot of green and white onions to make the dish look fuller. The chicken with string beans dish was greasy as well. We had to drink a lot of tea just to wash everything down. Just when I thought our meal couldn't get any worse, we were notified at 1929 hours (a full 18 minutes after the arrival of third dish) that they were all out of the crispy chicken that we had ordered. How could you not know you were out? Why couldn't you have told us about it sooner? At 1931 hours, our fourth and fifth dishes (Garlic Spare Ribs and Sea Bass and Tofu Clay Pot) arrived. Both were pretty nasty. The spare ribs were battered, deep fried, and had fried chopped garlic sprinkled on top. They were very bland since they were not marinated prior. Some pieces had a lot of cartilage and gristle, making it difficult to eat. Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, the sea bass clay pot managed to exceed our expectations. Real sea bass has a distinctly buttery, flaky flesh that's unmistakable in flavor. What we got tasted like something out of a chum bucket that had been sitting in the sun. The fish scraps consisted of mostly fins and bones. What little meat that was salvaged off of them tasted like old bait. Not sure what kind of fish they used but it sure ain't sea bass! The rest of this tragedy was covered in fried tofu cubes and aromatics that occupied 90% of the tiny clay pot. Our replacement dish (Ginger and Scallion Steamed Chicken) arrived at 1933 hours. Out of the six dishes, this was probably the best (the bar was set real low). But then again, how can you mess up such a simple dish? Service was disorganized and disjointed. No one came to check on us during the meal. We had to flag our server down multiple times to have tea and rice refilled. Also, we ordered rice for only three people (as mentioned, our friend doesn't eat carbs) but was charged for four. They corrected it after I pointed it out. Frankly, I was extremely dismayed by this experience. The essence of a good Chinese meal is to have everyone enjoy a delicious and bountiful spread all at once, not having to wait a long time between dishes. Somehow, this restaurant failed royally on this basic concept. Congratulations, King Palace. You are now crowned as the worst Chinese restaurant in San Ramon, if not the whole county! Never again. The food tasted not bad. The services are terrible, though. At 6:05 p.m., I placed an online order and received an email confirmation. At 6:25 p.m., I headed to the restaurant. It would be ready soon, the cashier lady promised. After a quarter of an hour, she informed me that she had not received the order. Online doesn't function, she claimed. I had to place my order there at 6:40 p.m., and my food were ready around 6:45 p.m. "You need to call next time," she replied, noting that it wasn't their fault. In actuality, I called around 5:45 p.m. and was told to "wait". For three minutes, I had to listen in on their phone discussion. I simply hung up the phone to do my online order. No one apologized to me for the inconvenience. I would strongly advise against placing an online order, and their customer support needs to be improved. read more

As a long time connoisseur of Chinese food, I have been constantly disappointed with most of the various establishments in or near San Ramon. Today, much to my delight I discovered King Palace. I came here on a Saturday. It wasn't busy as it was still early and they had just opened. The lady working there was nice and it was cool that her little boy was helping with basic chores for the beginning of the day. Now...the food I ordered to go. I went with the daily lunch combo of Yiu Shiang Trip and upgraded for approximately $2 to opt for Chowmein instead of rice. This was a good idea because that Chowmein was amazing! The entire drive home the savory aroma filled the air causing me to drive faster so I can eat sooner. King Palace is one of the nicer Chinese restaurants while still staying pretty authentic. I've been here a few times because it's close to my house, and my favorite is always the salt & pepper halibut! The halibut is always so crispy and salty and tastes great when dipped in the sweet & sour sauce it comes with. Although it's fried, you can still taste the fish inside (aka not fake), which is great! The chow mein is your classic chow mein that has great flavor and can be oily. For vegetables, I normally like to order the garlic spinach because it tastes healthy but still delicious. The spinach is sautéed in garlic, which gives it a great flavor, and the portion is great! read more
