This restaurant's reputation is a total farce. We were seated without a menu, water, acknowledgment or a single word of warning--no heads-up that the kitchen was drowning or that service would be non-existent. The lack of communication was a deliberate trap. After an agonizing wait, we realized their "strategy" was to pacify us by dropping one single dish at a time only when we complained. It was a joke. After an hour of watching surrounding tables stew in the same collective frustration, we had only been served two cold appetizers. It's truly impressive to be that incompetent. If it takes this much effort and "nagging" just to get cold starters to the table, I can only assume the kitchen is in a state of total collapse. We eventually walked out, refusing to waste another minute of our lives being held hostage by a staff that treats basic service like an inconvenience. One of my favorite places to get Chinese food in the area! I usually go here for lunch with my coworkers. The restaurant is bright and spacious - we haven't had to wait. Service has been quick as well. Our go-to dishes are: - boiling fish - mild spicy, but can be oily and heavy. They can drain the oil for you if you have leftover and take it to go. - salted egg fried rice: I don't usually order fried rice at restaurants, but this is always an exception! The location used to be one of my favorite Shanghainese restaurants but it probably changed owner so it's now Sichuan food. Even before going my friend told me that there really isn't too many choices for good Chinese food around the area so my expectations wasn't that high. Even so I don't think it gives you a good value for the quality of the food. First, I know it's a Sichuan restaurant but even so it has probably the weirdest Mongolian beef I've ever had as they fried the beef. The Boiling Beef is much better but nothing to write home about. Basically everything I had was so so. The frog was not fresh. And the best is probably the cabbage dry pot which is ironic because it's literally the easiest dish. Overall for the price I would say it's worth even 3 stars. I'm giving it this rating just because this area is so lacking in Chinese food. Service is alright and I could tell right away the people working there are not from the Sichuan area. The biggest redeeming value is that they don't automatically add big tip for large group. It's however really expensive for what you get. Overall it's a restaurant that you only go if you live around the area but avoid if you live closer to better places in the Bay Area. read more

It doesn't look too big from the outside but once you step in, it's very spacious. We were greeted right away and led to our seat by a friendly gentleman. The hubby was craving wonton soup and I was craving chow mein. I had to get the honey walnut prawns because it's my favorite. The soup was a bit bland for me, however it had a lot of meat and wontons to make up for it. The prawns were very delicious but the walnuts tasted a bit burnt. We came here on a weekend evening. My friend made a reservation two weeks in advance since we were a large party and unfortunately they didn't have us on the books. But, they were able to accommodate us. So make sure you double check your reservation before coming in. Overall the food was pretty good. We used to visit the Pleasanton location before it closed, and glad to find that it is now closer to home. Ordered the beef jerky for appetizer, spicy chicken wings and pork shoulders as entrees. We also had a bowl of rice and 2 hot waters. I generally don't like tea in Chinese restaurants as I have better tea at home, especially if I have to pay extra for it. Anyway the beef jerky is great and just as dry and spicy as it should be. The leftover will be great with beer and soju. 5 stars ***** The chicken wings were as expected, numbing and yummy... just a bit small in portion. 3.5 stars *** The pork shoulder was a disappointment. The menu says it comes with pea sprouts but it actually had broccoli. I love broccoli but I was expecting pea sprouts. Almost 1/3 was skin and fat, the other 3rd was the bone... and the rest actual meat. The sauce was not too tasty... not spicy and I really can't tell what it is. The Dongpo pork shoulder I had had in other places were more of reddish brown sauce, and not this chopped chili version. 1 star for the tenderness of the actual meat part. * The disappointing pork shoulder dragged down the overall rating. The service was okay, we had to ask for water refill... and got cold water instead of hot. The overall ambience was very typical Chinese so don't expect much. Wax it worth the $80+ bill for 2? I came here for lunch after an appointment. I looked on Yelp for recommendations and saw China Lounge. I decided to give them a try. The restaurant is spacious with nice decorations and a full bar. They even have a plush seating table. The lunch menu is small compared to other restaurants. I ordered broccoli beef over rice. It did NOT come with complimentary soup or egg rolls. Since I was hungry, I ordered their "Extra" soup wonton soup for $6.00. I waited 10 minutes for my soup... I realized they will serve it the same time with my entree...YEP, they did. The server and kitchen need to communicate better regarding food timing. My entree ended up cold by the time I finished the soup. I noticed the tables did not have ANY condiments (black pepper, soy sauce, chili sauce). You have to ask for them. Ugh! Wonton Soup: The wontons were soft and plentiful. I enjoyed them. The broth was lightly flavored. 3.5 Stars Broccoli Beef: Bland, no flavor. The beef slices were not consistent. China Lounge has moved from Pleasanton to San Ramon. I came the second day they opened but wanted to give them time to work out the kinks before reviewing. The menu has progressed from crude printer paper to laminated to QR code. Some food items have been added and deleted. The more specialized Szechuan items are giving way to Americanized items. The lunch menu has expanded. Food is good and at least different from the typical Cantonese cuisine that is most common in this area. Service has definitely improved since first opening and as the familiarity of the menu the servers will be more professional. The interior decor has remained unchanged from I-Shanghai but with the addition of some TVs. Definitely not as fancy as the old Pleasanton location. Szechuan food is supposed to be spicy and numbing. Most dishes looked spicy but it is not. It is more on the salty side, imo. String beans - good flavor and al dente. It's lightly fried and got a crunch to it. Not like those from Korean Chinese places where it is over fried and mushy. It is quite tasty. Eggplant 魚香茄子- also tasty Fried chicken wings 炸子雞- crispy, juicy and tasty. Fish casserole 水者魚- this dish looks spicy but it is not. It is the greasiest and saltiest out of all the dishes.
