They're super affordable, incredibly friendly, and OMG their food is so good! I got two goodies and loved them both! Spring Onions with Dry Pork Roll - This wasn't dry at all! The dough was moist, the roll was perfectly chewy, and if you haven't tried it yet, you need to. It's seriously good. Egg Custard Tart (which I loved so much I nicknamed it Gudetama) - This was easily the star of the show for me. I knew I was in for a treat when that little homie JIGGLED (I know!!). Beyond being delicious and dare I say, INCREDIBLY AFFORDABLE, it's easily the best egg custard tart I've had in town (and will def be getting another one!). Located on 82nd, the bakery isn't very flashy outside and the parking lot is hidden in the back, away from the street. Walking into the bakery (from the parking lot) you walk down a long hall before you get to the actual bakery. But once you get to the actual bakery, it's heaven. There are so many options here, both savory and sweet. There are also all kinds of toppings, fillings, and flavors of breads. The price is honestly the best I've seen in Portland in YEARS. A smol mom and pop Chinese bakery with plenty of free parking in the back (entrance is via an alleyway on the right side of the building) I tried the Red Bean Puffs, BBQ Pork Bun, and Custard Bun. The buns were light, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. The Pork Bun was a perfect blend of subtly sweet bread and savory pork and the custard bun was sweet but not overly. My favorite was the red bean puff because they were generous with the red bean filling and the outside was like a soft, crumbly cookie. Neither the filling nor the outside was very sweet at all which was a pleasant surprise. King's used to have a solid assortment of sweet and savory pastries, but over the last couple of years, the diversity and quality of King's offerings has declined dramatically. Most recently, I purchased a couple of buns, one with custard, another with curry. When I returned home and cut them in half, there was NO custard in the custard bun, and a scant teaspoon of curry in the custard bun. Add that to the ongoing creepyness of King's interior and the even more creepy adult store next door, as well as the super inconvenient one way parking lot, and King's has become a hard pass. This is a go to staple for our household. We come from vancouver on a regular basis. I really should take some photos of what we order. A go to for us is the ham and cheese bread, their pork bun and their curry beef bun! While I am not a hot dog person, I love their mini hot dog bun with cheese! Kings bakery has always been a great place to go for cakes. It looks like any other bakery with a showcase full of baked goods. The bread on all of the buns or rolls is great, my only complaint is there is hardly any filling. The prices are good but I'm sure people would be willing to pay a little more if there were more filling. The workers are always sweet and helpful. The cakes are my favorite! Driving down 82nd Ave after a late morning appointment It popped into my mind that I could use a baguette to go with some Chicken Soup I bought at Trader Joe's that morning. Admittedly, this was a spur of the moment detour after a quick Google search for "Vietnamese Bakery" at the congested stoplight. A narrow entrance provides access to a bountiful parking lot in the back. When entering i saw a dad with 3 happy little kids pass me by noshing into some good looking beef pastries. Looking back, should've asked the dad what pastries they had because everything I ordered wasn't good. Note: you must order 8 items to get a to go box. There are 4 such bakeries all near the Jade Market corridor of SE 82nd. Don't expect much if any ambiance.....they are all typically takeout establishments. Most items can be had for $1.25 to $3. Kings Bakery has been around the longest and is pretty traditional flavor-wise and mid-range, price-wise. Nothing too fancy, and item size is a little on the smallish side. We had a shredded pork bun and a beef curry bun. Above average taste but again, smallish. They also had cakes (again, fruity and typically, not sweet), and bubble tea drinks. I've been to this Bakery since I was a kid! The dessert was always delicious and cheap! I was craving some nice Asian sweets so we drove out of our way to go here. I bought a bunch of desserts! At my first bite: I realized something was very wrong! Im really disappointed with their frosting replacement. Instead of their usual delicious frosting, it was replaced with a cheap "tub of cool whip" frosting. It completely ruined the dessert. Please raise your prices and bring back your usual frosting! I think there are a few chinese bakeries just in a 10 block radius from Division and 82nd Ave. Although none of them are 5-stars in my opinion, I think this one is pretty solid. I think their egg tarts are perhaps their best item: fresh, warm, a little sweet and slightly creamy, and only $0.80. Of course they have the baked & steamed bao (contrary to Don I actually thought the baked one was decent, especially since the meat was lean and not 50% chunks of fat), and a huge assortment of chinese buns (ham & egg, coconut crust, cream filled, shredded pork, hot dog, bacon/onion, etc) all for a buck or less They make full-size custom cakes/pastries, but I've only had their $1.00 mini-desserts (they aren't the ultra-high end desserts you'll find at Pix or Jacivas, but for only a buck they're a good deal. When I was there a Chinese father brought in his 2 kids and I overheard him asking his 6 year old what he wanted for his birthday cake, so I know this place is legit with real asians :-) They've also got bubble tea for only $3! I haven't tried it yet, and all signs indicate I won't be super impressed, but again it's $0.50-1.50 cheaper than most other bubble tea shops around like the one at Fubonn or Sozo. Finally around the time of the Moon Festival they have one of the best selections of Moon Cakes I've seen in town! Overall this place is cheap and decent quality. As Kevin noted, old chinese men are frequently found in the back playing their cutthroat games of Majong. Unfortunately I can't speak Chinese so I'm not sure if there's more at stake than just pride, but I didn't want to stay to find out! read more

I bookmarked King's quite a while back because of some of my fellow Yelpers who frequent the place. I searched my bookmarks from where I was and I was barely a mile from the location. I've mentioned before that I enjoy food from other cultures and I'll admit, I'd never really had bakery items from a Chinese bakery. I grew up with Italian bakeries and all those rich desserts and cookies. With the exception of East coast Chinese food, I didn't have much exposure to all the other good stuff. No hot pots, no dim sum either. I still need to experience those. As for the bakery goods? Cream bun, bbq pork pie, custard bun, egg custard tart and dry pork bun were the items that were looking good to me. Pretty much everything was around $1.00 and not much more. Those five items cost me all of $5.40. The cream bum was sweet and the cream was light. The dry pork bun was different, in a good way. Pork on top of the bun and the sweet bun was actually filled with butter. Really cool. The custard bun and egg tart were great examples of desserts. The only one I was a little underwhelmed by was the bbq pork pie. Philo dough with very little minced bbq pork. Nothing special. But you can't win 'em all. But there were many other items I want to go back and try including their steamed buns. I am so glad I got to try this place out and it was because of the people I see here and I'm friends with on this app. Kudos to my fellow Yelpers. Go experience new foods. Enjoy. read more

King Bakery isn't as bad as some folks may make it out to be. In the past this place was always very on and off with its baked goods, but as of late this place has shown a real consistency in producing quality treats. While I am not a huge fan of their cakes, I have known people personally who rave about them.. The cakes are very Asian of course, with plenty of emphasis on fruit, cream, and size which results in a light, fluffy, taste that isn't overbearingly sweet. Aside from this, their only downfall is their lack of parking spaces. This can be a problem during the weekend afternoon hours when the place is full and parking the next lot over is a pain, especially when carrying a box full of treats. Prices are reasonable, cakes don't cost an arm and a leg and buns of all fillings range from .75 cents to $2.00. I have had some of the best egg tarts here, fresh and crispy with just enough tart. The service here is top notch and the ladies behind the counter are willing to help out novices in any capacity with decent explanations of every item. Be sure to ask for recommendations. I could go on and on, but most of the Chinese community of Portland are already on board with this bandwagon. I recommend all curious patrons to come down and try some of the finest baked Chinese goods in Portland. read more

I was so sad to bite into the mooncakes from here. I bought three kinds. The mini red bean moon cakes were the freshest. The two large mooncakes (nut and single yolk), were so hard I could barely cut them in half. I still tasted them to see if the flavor would redeem the fact that they were stale, but sadly, they were so dry I couldn't even swallow it. They ended up in the trash. We bought sesame balls too, and they were also stale and very chewy. They left so much grease on my hands, I had to throw the rest away and wash my hands. The pork buns were ok, but I wouldn't buy them again as they were mostly bun with a tiny bit of bland filling. I've seen a lot of positive reviews, so maybe they serve a fresher product on the weekends? I went on a Tuesday. I won't be back to risk it again, weekend or not. :-( read more
