I'm giving King's a bit of grace today because I've eaten there many times and today wasn't quite as good as previous. I ordered the barbecue plate with fries and collards. Collards were great, barbecue was good. Fries were nothing special -- a little soggy. They have tons of sides including some rotating ones. I should have chosen something different. Husband really enjoyed the dry limas. I like the king's vinegar sauce. I wish sauce and ketchup were on the table instead of pre packaged. They were almost out of napkins when we visited -- said they had another shipment coming in the next day. Portion sizes are generous. read more

Stayed in Kinston for one month for work and loved kings. Love the sweet tea and the beef tips and gravy. Also enjoyed fresh Fridays though not my fave fish. But this beef tips were amazing. And the greens and yams were good too. I will say I feel like this location was a bit slow but I guess it just depends what time you went. I didn't like the banana pudding. Idk it just wasn't doing it for me. But overall liked kings wish I had tried the other locations. read more

I visited the Vernon Ave location on May 8th at which time I ordered a fish (trout) and barbecue combo for $19.20. When I received my order the plate was so light I thought they handed me the wrong order. I looked at the plate and there was this thin hard cooked half fish and a little bit of barbecue in a very small styrofoam container. There was also 4 overcooked hush puppies and a dab of potato salad and green beans. I'll admit it's been a long while since I've been there but I am familiar with their fish and barbecue plates because I use to get them for my mother atleast 2x a month on Fridays. The lady at the drive through was very nice when I commented about the plate and she took it and told me to drive up. As I sat in the car I thought if this is the quality of food they are serving nowadays it's not going to get better so I went in the resturant and requested a refund. The man who prepared my plate wanted to know what was wrong with it. I told him the amount of food and quality of the food was not pleasing. When I said it looked like a toddler plate with a dab of barbecue and fish on it he said that's the size of a combo plate. I told him that I beg the difference because I use to order this plate for my mother and he then said, I've been here for 13 years and it's been this way. I told him to give me my money back because we are not going to agree on this one. My point is the same plate use to cost $12.99 atleast 7 years ago, however; I expected a price increase because that's the world we live in now. What I didn't expect was such a poor quantity and quality of food. Had the plate been of the same quantity and quality it use to be nothing would have been said. I was given a refund without any issues. Resturants really need to rethink their approach to the pressures of rising prices because if you think it is okay to jack up prices and pass on garbage to customers you're in trouble. The BBQ was tender, but seasoned with too much vinegar for my taste. The cole slaw was fresh, comparable in taste with other eastern NC BBQ restaurants. I am speaking for drive thru only. We got there about 15 mins before closing, didn't realize they closed at 8:30pm. However, that did not cause for them to treat us any differently, the lady that took our order was very kind and patience as we figured out what we wanted. Kings has been around a long time. The buffet is always good and has a great variety of food. You never leave hungry.

I figured this would be a hole in the wall that had delicious food.... I saw the food network had mentioned it. I was excited to try. This is the smaller location with a drive thru but we went in to eat. Never in my life have a seen a filthier place. The rating was 95.5 but I can't see how. The bathrooms were disgusting, tables greasy and booths had ripped vinyl. Super rude people taking our order. The inside seems to be a hangout for regulars who were laying in the booths and talking. The food came. The person who brought our food was much friendlier. The bbq chicken was amazing, great potato salad..... but then it happened. A cockroach crawled across the table. And. I. Was. Done. Don't. Stop. Here. And I love bbq. Like love it. It this isn't worth it. I need a shower now. read more

During the Pandemic time, something tried and true is what we crave. An old school eastern NC barbecue house with most of the dishes you expect. I had fried oysters and barbecued pork. Both were very good and the cole slaw although finely chopped was not so full of mustard. Kinston has quite alot to choose from and King's is still a good value. read more

One of the better BBQ joints around. The food is always hot and you really get a good amount of food for the price. The customer service is lacking a bit, not the friendliest of folks working at this location. The interior desperately needs renovating. You can only put so many coats of paint on something before it stops looking decent. Regardless, I'll keep coming back to King's. read more

For many years, my passing through Kinston is often accented by a stop at King's. Always crowded, I have LOVED feeding my family on the chicken and BBQ. Sometimes I enjoy their food more than others. Yesterday, I called from Goldsboro, as I usually do, and ordered a BBQ pack to go. I got there shy of 30 minutes later and paid, then asked for their sauce. "There isn't any" remarked the cashier, "Unless you want some of that" pointing to obviously well-used squeeze bottles on the shelf by the dining area. I could also pay $1.99 for a bottle, yet had just paid over $12 for the meat, slaw and hushpuppies. REALLY?! The bbq was good on top, gristly and greasy in the middle and layered in fat at the bottom. After blotting it and picking through the inedible parts, it was indeed tasty. The slaw was enjoyable, not too soupy and obviously fresh. The hushpuppies were stone cold. Crunchy and nice flavor, hushpuppies SHOULD be hot, imo. King's does not need my occasional business to survive. I understand that. Maybe next time, I will try Wilbur's.. read more

I saw this place on NC Weekend. Told my Beautiful Bride the next time we were in Kinston we had to go. The people are nice and helpful and the food is very good. By far some of the best BBQ I've ever had. It's Eastern Carolina Q but when it's served it needs nothing done to it. Doesn't need extra vinegar sauce or salt or pepper. Just eat it! I got the Pug in a Pup; a giant hush puppy piled high with their BBQ. I asked for my slaw on the side and that's my recommendation at any bbq place. I want to know what the q tastes like without anything else on it. The slaw is a good accompaniment but glad I left it off. The hush puppy bun was outstanding with good crust on it. My Beautiful Bride got the chicken and bbq combination plate. Mashed taters and okra as sides was a very good choice. I'm planning to stop back in before we leave and at least get a pound or two to go home with us. We also plan to visit the other location that has a buffet next time. This is our first time here as we're just passing through on our way to Newport. The BBQ plate was very good with nice smoky and moist pork. The collard greens were very flavorful and the Brunswick stew was good. All in all, very pleased! I don't understand why this place has only one other review and it is one star? read more
