I really enjoy visiting historical houses and seeing how people lived back and in time. The cottage is in surprisingly good condition. It was built in 1812 and is a NYC landmark. We really enjoyed the guided tour and learning more details about Poe's life. Poe rented the house in 1846 and lived there with his wife Virginia, who was dying of tuberculosis. She died in the cottage, and they had the actual bed where she passed away. Roger, the guide, was extremely knowledgeable and a great narrator. They currently have a free Spring Poetry seminar available at the cottage.

It's a tiny house and if there is a tour going on you can either join in or wait in the gift area, read some Poe or just stare out of the window imagining yesteryear. Our docent was full of enthusiasm and we left with Annabel Lee still on our lips. "But we loved with a love that was more than love, I and my Annabel Lee".

A small park with plenty of tall leafy trees, benches, and a central fountain, directly next to…read more(south of) NYC's City Hall building. While it's currently fairly close to the bottom tip of Manhattan, the park in colonial times was considered the northernmost edge of the city. Being thus, it started off functioning as locations for services relegated to the city periphery--livestock pastures 1653-1699, an almshouse 1736-1797, a debtors prison and execution site when the British controlled the area during the Revolutionary War 1756-1783. Once the park became adjacent to the current city hall built in 1803, it then hosted the city's first art museum 1818, and the southern tip of the park was sold to the US government to convert into a post office 1867, then torn down and converted back to park grounds in 1939. Constructed in 1842, the original fountain in the park was named Croton Fountain after the then new Croton aqueduct from which water was pumped to run it. In 1871 it was replaced by the current smaller version, designed by Jacob Wray Mould, who also co-designed Central Park's Bethesda Fountain. There are a number of permanent sculptures of historic figures in the park as well as temporary sculpture installations. Overall the park is quite clean and safe, probably due to its proximity to the nearby city offices and police presence. Due to its proximity to the city building where marriages are performed, you'll often catch couples taking marriage photos here in the park--have come upon these special moments a couple times as I've randomly walked through. This peaceful hideaway, located just west of Cherry Hill and east of the 72nd Street and Central Park West entrance, is ideal for quiet reflections and special celebrations. Originally known as the Cherry Hill Boat Landing, the cove was renamed after Robert F. Wagner, a former New York City Mayor who played a significant role in reforming city politics in the 1950s. In its early years, it functioned as one of the many docks where passengers could board rowboats to travel to other points on The Lake.

When you arrive at the "nature walk", you walk down a long concrete path surrounded by walls with little portholes in them, a kind of nautical theme. Then you arrive at the waterfront to an up-close view of a recycling plant, with stories-high piles of aluminum, steel, iron, etc. on the point across the creek. Behind that is Long Island City, not exactly known for its architecture or beauty. But you're on the water, and there's hardly anyone else there. Not bad for a city of 8.5 million. Then you walk down some more concrete paths to an area with markers by the bushes and trees telling you about them. I'm sure it's prettier other times of year, but in mid-April it wasn't impressive. Then it dumps you out in another industrial zone that takes awhile to loop around and get back to civilization. It was worth doing once.

A lot of time was put in to designing this walkway and it's something different off the beaten path. Great for kids too. They have great vocabulary words engraved into handrails in one place. Definitely something different and fun.

Been to Morristown downtown many times, and it's always nice to see a park right in the middle of…read morethe city. It feels good to take a walk here while being surrounded by the bustle and hustle of downtown life. The last two visits were during Christmas, and this place truly shines during the holiday season. The festive lighting around the park adds a beautiful , feels like festive season, right! They usually have a carol section, but the Meet with Santa event is clearly the most popular--especially with families. The kids' train ride is another big hit and adds to the holiday excitement... There are also a couple of statues and memorials in the park, dedicated to history and local heritage, Overall, it's a great spot to relax, walk around, and soak in the holiday spirit--perfect for families, kids, or even a casual stroll while exploring downtown.

This park at the heart of Morristown is one of the few surviving colonial-era greens in the state…read more Established as early as 1715, it served as a communal hub where townspeople grazed livestock, drew water from a shared well, and gathered for religious, political, and social events. During the Revolutionary War, it became a military parade ground--General George Washington even supervised drills from nearby Arnold's Tavern. What makes Morristown Green especially notable is its rarity. While many American cities were originally designed around central squares or commons, only a fraction have preserved them as active public parks. Think of Boston Common, New Haven Green, or Savannah's many squares--each a living remnant of colonial planning. But in New Jersey, only Morristown and Newark still retain their original greens in recognizable form. After stopping to visit Morris Frank and Buddy, we walked this square and enjoyed the pleasant space, the many statues and monuments and then a bench. And then back to the Sprinter for more driving. Plenty of benches in the shade to relax on. Beautiful trees, flowers, bushes, and all types of greenery. There is a small dog run area in one park. Statues to view in each. Different free events take place according to signage listed near the entrance. Plus, you can view black squirrels here.

Stuyvesant Square is located along 2nd Avenue between 15th and 17th Streets, is a lovely area to…read moresit on a bench and enjoy the greenery, flowers or one of the fountains, or take your dog for a play date at the dog run. In the warmer months they have some outdoor programs available, like movie nights and performances. The park was created in 1836 when Peter Gerard Stuyvesant* (prominent landowner and philanthropist) and wife Helen Rutherford (daughter of Senator John Rutherford) sold 4 acres of family property for five dollars to the City of New York to use as a public park. Funny enough it was only transformed into a park due to a 1839 lawsuit brought against the city by Stuyvesant because the square remained vacant, by 1847 work started and was completed by 1850 with a cast iron fence (still present today, restored in 1982, 2006 and 2016) and two fountains (reconstructed in 1982). Two statues in the park commemorate important figures: 1) Peter Stuyvesant: the last Director-General of New Amsterdam, direct ancestor of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant. This was sculpted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney originally for the 1939 NY World's Fair. 2) Antonin Dvorak: renowned Czech composer, who lived across the street in the house (now demolished) where he wrote the famous "From the New World" Symphony. This statue was sculpted by Ivan Mestrovic in 1963 for the Lincoln Center and was relocated in 1997 to this park. *who was the co-founder of the New-York Historical Society and one of the richest men in America at that time.

The statue of Verdi looks like it was restored somewhat. I liked visiting on April 14, 2025 when I was visiting my old neighborhood. It's old school New York City to me.

It sits on what's called a traffic Island and it's named after Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi. Of course, growing up in the 1970's we called it Needle Park, after the druggy movie "Panic in Needle Park". My cousin Fran still calls it that. Later in life the homeless guys would sleep on the 73rd street side by the subway grate because the warm air would jet up and keep them toasty. Then in the daytime, all the seniors hung out in the park. This week, it was pretty sweet how we grabbed our dogs, drinks and relaxed in the park for a half hour. All while we were waiting for our train to take us to 91st street and Riverside park, to see the Garden people. More to come! 01/24

Hidden along a steep hillside below Belvedere Castle is the enchanting Shakespeare Garden. Definitely worthy of a visit. A delightful garden nicely laid out with quotes from Shakespeare and beautiful flowers throughout.
