    Came here for dinner with my sister and brother-in-law at their recommendation, and I can definitely see why they keep coming back. The restaurant was packed and seating is pretty limited, so I'd highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The atmosphere is lively and energetic with casual Japanese eatery vibes, and service was friendly throughout the meal. Everything felt creative, rich in flavor, and very texture-focused. Here are the highlights: * Ankimo Mousse (monkfish liver) with sweet potato chips - Made with truffle paste, capers, and chives. Absolutely delicious. The mousse was rich and savory but surprisingly fluffy in texture -- honestly a savory girl's dream. The sweet potato chips added just enough sweetness and a snap to balance the richness of the liver. 9/10 * Bluefin Tuna & Tsubugai Sashimi Nuta - Bluefin tuna, sea snail, broccolini, and fresh wakame tossed in a sweet Kyoto yuzu miso vinaigrette. Kind of like a sashimi-seaweed salad. I really liked the vinaigrette and especially the texture of the sea snail. I'm not sure all the ingredients fully came together cohesively, but it was still enjoyable overall. 7.5/10 * Yuba (house-made tofu skin with ikura and uni) - Served as single bites on spoons. SO good. You can really taste the difference between house-made tofu skin and store-bought. It's much more delicate, creamy, and tender, with a mild soybean flavor that balanced the richness of the uni and salmon roe beautifully. The textures in this bite were incredible. 9.5/10 * Iberico Pork Jowl Skewer with miso marinade - I honestly prefer pork jowl over pork belly. The fat and meat are more integrated instead of layered, so every bite is tender, juicy, and flavorful with just the right amount of chew. So good. 9/10 * Clam & Cilantro Ramen - I've never had a ramen broth quite like this. It was slightly creamy and deeply flavored from the clams, and the cilantro added a lot of depth and freshness. The noodles had a great texture too -- chewy and bouncy. Everything worked together perfectly. 9/10 * Uni Carbonara Pasta - Pasta with parmesan, uni, and ikura. They do not skimp on the uni or roe here. Super creamy and rich with bursts of saltiness from the ikura. The texture was great, but I honestly wished it had just a tiny bit more salt to really make all the flavors pop. It was almost there for me. 7.5/10 * Desserts - We tried two desserts, including the sweet potato brûlée. Both were delicious. One had a silky panna cotta-like texture, while the sweet potato brûlée was creamy, lightly sweet, and had the perfect crackly sugar top. 9/10 Overall, such a fun meal with a lot of unique dishes and flavor combinations. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try next time. I'll definitely be back.

    very busy izakaya near berkeley. liked the kanpachi nigiri, corn tempura, beef tongue, and pork jowl skewer. rest of the skewers and the ankimo spread were just ok. would return to try their chirashi bowls otherwise i'd go elsewhere. we were walk in and minimum spend per person was $30 which was really easy. tables are very cramped inside and restaurant filled up by 6pm

    I've been to Kiraku twice before this visit, and I felt like the food quality was stronger prior. The food comes in a timely manner, staff is mindful to not fill your table as it's a small space. The standouts were the corn tempura, the sushi and the beef okonomiyaki. The skewers were good but not great; I felt the pork belly was a tad salty, and some of the pieces of the beef were slightly overcooked + chewy. The black cod was flaky but I wish it was marinated a bit more with the miso for stronger flavor. I wish I did not order the spring roll or the foil wrapped salmon. The spring roll was soggy bc the filling inside was so damp and lacked seasoning & flavor. The salmon was very dry, but the mushrooms were flavorful and juicy. Definitely recommend reservations or be ready to wait at least 45 minutes. The inside is quite small, tables as well, so be ready to sit pretty close to your neighboring patrons. Very lively atmosphere that can get loud, but could also be fun!

    5 stars Expensive but a worthy splurge. I will note that they don't serve Highballs as a drink option for added authenticity but their drinks menu is otherwise complete for an Izakaya. Skewers: Beef intestines: fatty, perfectly charred and marinated Pork belly: delicious but the least interesting Lamb + okra: nicely prepared and delicious Pickled Sakana leaves: deliciously pickled and salty on its own but worked perfectly as a skewer meat accompaniment Chicken karage: perfectly cooked and juicy Beef+lamb potstickers: homemade and presented in the traditional style. Very good Roasted tea leaf pudding was delicious

    So glad we had a reservation as this restaurant seemed super popular as the restaurant filled up quickly. VAlthough they have omakase sushi I loved their Japanese style tapas much more. We ordered the 9 piece omakase, fish was fresh, rice not as much but was still good. The sashimi natto tartare was delicious and had such a beautiful presentation. The ganjang seawoo which was Korean Style Soy Sauce Marinated Raw Shrimp, Added a Side of Mini Rice, Korean Seaweed & Marinated Egg York. At first we didn't know how to eat this but wow it was so flavorful. The black cod was absolutely amazing. Service was prompt and very helpful with their recommendations. There was street metered parking right up front and I was lucky to snag a spot. Didn't see any parking lot though.

    Popular Izakaya gem on Telegraph Avenue. I was surprised by the extensive waitlist. Good idea to do a table reservation. This place is super popular and quite cozy inside. Be aware -Tables are very close to one another. Oh my! The quality of food is excellent. A friend and I got 8 plates to share between the two of us. It was enough. Really really tasty. I highly recommend and will be returning here.

    Had their uni carbonara pasta and the deluxe kaisen box and everything was so delicious with beautiful presentation! The interior is a little small but very cozy. There isn't really a waiting area/very small space, so bring a jacket in case you wait outside. The fish was very fresh. Would definitely come back!

    We came 10 min before opening and got a table for dinner on Saturday. The space is small so seating is a bit cramped. Food: - Tako Wasabi (5/5): good portion, raw and spicy, not for everyone - Beef Wagyu Tataki (3/5): ponzu overpowered any taste of the beef - Mini Kaisen Donburi (5/5): such a treat! It was topped with 3 small pieces of uni and I thought it was worth it for $22. - Garlic edamame (5/5): A MUST!

    Came here before they opened on a Thursday evening and to our surprise there were already probably 8-10 parties on the yelp waitlist. We were so excited to try this place after reading the reviews. Luckily since we got there in person, we were seated fairly quickly. We ordered the sake flight and a beer to start. We got the beef tongue (with truffle oil and salt) and that was probably our favorite thing. We also ordered the karaage, which we were kind of disappointed in. The batter was thick and slightly mushy and I think it just didn't get fried long enough. Flavor was good tho. We ordered the menaiko creamy udon, also mid. Not creamy enough, more watery and just salty. The carpaccio was one of the top dishes we got and the negi toro maki. Overall small restaurant with bustling ambiance. Felt like I was back in Japan for a hot second.

It reminded us of the coziness of the restaurants in Japan. They even had baskets to place your bags and belongings! The servers were extremely friendly and attentive. All the food was really good despite the price. The yakitori melted in our mouths. The fish tasted fresh and was prepared well. There is a minimum spend per person, but it's pretty easy to hit. I'd say this restaurant is more of a once-in-a-while type of restaurant rather than a regular go-to restaurant. Very casual, but authentic. I'm surprised it's not Michelin rated! I recommend making a reservation, as the restaurant is rather small and there seems to always be a long wait.

    Great place for a special meal. Definitely make a reservation, the minimum charge is easily surpassed. Tables are packed in as it is a small place. Some classics and lots of creative dishes as well. Mini kaisen bowl was a highlight for me. Beautiful salmon, ikura, and delicious uni. Definitely try the corn fritters as well!

    Delicious small plates to enjoy! The tongue was excellent! Ceviche salad with chips was delicious! The pork belly skewers was delicious! The uni pasta was good! Salmon sashimi was solid. The creme brulee desert was good! Fun meal to eat with family and friends. Also good to know that they require each person at the table to order at least up to $35 a person even if they are kids!

    Is this an all you can eat sushi joint? If yes, how much is it per person?

    No. It is a la carte.

    Does the restaurant allow you to bring cake to celebrate a birthday?

    While I have never attempted to do so I have found the restaurant to be very customer focused and I would imagine if you requested ahead of time they would allow. It's worth asking ahead of time.

    Are they careful if you have a shellfish allergy?

    Yes! Notify the waitress. My husband is allergic to lobster and crab and he left just fine!

    Are there gluten-free options?

    Yes, I count at least a dozen gluten-free optional items in the menu posted online.

    What is the name of the soft and stringy type of seaweed/moss that's included on the deluxe chazuke? I ordered it before and have been wondering ever since! It was delicious.

    No, I don't recall the credit card fee on my most recent visit.

    No, but I would recommend you do so because the restaurant is generally busy. If you get there early or open the Yelp app at 5:30, you could get a head start on the waitlist.

    Does Kiraku have gift cards?

    No, to my knowledge they don't.

    Do you have a traditional sushi nigiri/maki options?

    No.

    Does the dine-in menu include the Kaisen Box?

    The dine-in menu changes periodically, but on my last two visits I did see a kaisen box on the menu. However I cannot say if it is the same as the kaisen box offered on the takeout menu.

    Does $40minimum per person apply to a 2 years old?

    I don't know why anyone would bring a 2yo to a very loud crowded restaurant, but I doubt they would be so rigid. They've only been kind and flexible when I've gone there.

    Can you order to go?

    During lockdown, Kiraku has been one of my favorite places to get to go from. They make your dish at the scheduled time so just make sure that you are there on time to have your food hot.

    Have a party of 10...is it feasible to get a table if we get there early? Not sure how small the restaurant is. Don't think we will eat $40 with per person so won't be making reservation.

    I was a party of 3 got there before opening and there was already a line and we waited almost an hour since people already had reservations. It's really easy to make the 40 minimum so I would just go and make the reservation.

    Are you open on Christmas Tuesday this year?

    No, they are not open on Xmas, I believe.

It took well over what felt like 20-30 minutes from our 1st order to our 2nd Chef's Choice dish. That negatively impacted our experience, but it happens. I'd like to try Ippuku again and hope there will be less of a delay. Our server was nice & attentive, came around a few times to refill our water.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. Delicious sukiyaki, chicken skewers, cold tofu, salmon rolls, hamachi sashimi, Ikura and uni, tuna and Ikura nigiri, and hamachi Kama (not sure why they charge $21 and then $7 for a large when it is two small dollars that came out though). Decent wine selection - Chardonnay was good. Restaurant itself is fairly loud, especially with a baby that kept crying. But it might have been crying because it was loud. Owners should consider the Constellation System by Meyer Sound to make the dining experience more enjoyable for patrons. As this is a longtime bastion of Japanese food in the Bay, they should really invest in the sound portion of their restaurant. Prices have gone up since the last time I was here but it's not totally unreasonable. Good quality food and service. Love this place.

There was a lot of rice which if we knew that we probably would've skipped the extra bowl I ordered to eat with my lamb chops. For the somewhat premium pricing, I wish they provided fresh chopped wasabi. ~ Stuffed mushroom skewer was just okay--tasty but nothing special. I guess for mushrooms it does taste kinda like a chicken meatball which could be a good thing. Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + Attentive and thoughtful service, especially accommodating a broken foot. They let my family wait at the bar instead of standing. + Ambiance is that classic Japanese vibe, busy but comfortable. Maybe not high-end, but definitely a place that feels special--especially now that we can afford it!

It was very mushroomy. It was all one could taste. The spam did not fit with the ramen and was very jarring to taste in the ramen. Yuzu Matcha (5/5) - It's sour but not too sour. The simple handroll of a Shrimp Tempura was a typical dish, but the garlic green beans were an unexpected surprise of deliciousness. While the ambience felt an homage to traditional Japanese culture in a comforting way, the service was really slow and they misplaced or forgot multiple orders. We waited 30 extra minutes just for a side of green beans. Definitely would reccomend checking them out earlier in the day when they are not so busy, but the food is worth a try.
