I've been to Kirby 3 times. The first time was admittedly one of the best haircuts I have ever received. The second time was an average, bit too long in the front, cut. The last cut, which was roughly a year later, was one of the worst haircuts I have ever received. Kirby spent 20 minutes reshaving my sides over and over again with the same length razor. Then, with a few minutes to spare cut the top and left it uneven in spots by several inches. It looked awful and Kirby seemed to not really pay much of mind. It was one of those cuts where your scheduling an appointment elsewhere while you walk out of the shop. I think Kirby has a lot of talent, but it seems that he is very hit or miss (and miss bad) due to lack of attention to the cutting part and over emphasizing shaving the sides. read more

Me and 2 friends stopped in on 6/6/2018 for a quick outline of our newly growing beards, and to clean up our neck... the father and son duo must have been raised in the south.... could not be any more welcoming. They even hand-make most all of their products! The shave cream, hot towel, and cooling spray are absolutely extra and relaxing. Worst haircut I have ever gotten. The whole thing was rushed and now I'm left with the worst haircut I have ever received. After getting my haircut I immediately went to Academy and bought myself a hat that I don't plan on taking off until my hair grows back. My instructions about how I wanted my haircut were completely ignored. I get upset every time I look in the mirror and see my head. Safe to say I'm never going back there again. read more

Great old-school shop for classic cuts. Kirby is the best barber that I've ever used.

I set up an appointment with Kirby weeks in advanced. I arrived at my appointment 10 minutes in advanced because I heard how punctual Kirby likes to be. But he was apparently behind schedule and had somebody ahead of me. So ended up waiting for a half hour extra. The haircut was decent, I told him how I wanted my haircut but he didn't really follow directions and did his own deviation. It was still a pretty decent haircut I have had better for less than $29. It was not the best haircut in Austin that I've had as I thought it would be. He did use a straight edge blade. The beard trim was nice. He kinda cut it a little shorter than I wanted but I really liked the shape he made. Probably the best beard shaping I've ever had done. He did not use a straight edge for lining up my beard or shaving my throat area. That was disappointing because I love the straight edge warm towel and shaving cream experience. I don't know if he didn't do it because he was behind schedule or what but it was disappointing. Maybe if I requested it he would have but it should be given for $29. Overall I just don't think it would be worth it for me to revisit Kirby. Considering the high prices, area and pain for parking. Definitely not for a haircut. His beard care was great but for $29 that is too much. I think Kirby is good at older business style haircuts, but not for younger guys with the short fades and long top. read more

Excellent work. Would definitely recommend (and have). This guy knows what he's doing and he's a hoot to shoot the shit with. Nothing is more relaxing than a hot lather and straight razor shave. And at the end he pulls out one of those old fashioned mechanical neck massage machines... that combined with online booking leading to the lack of having to sit there, wait, and hope you get a chair makes it a perfect lunch break errand. I've lived in Austin for a while now and have had an EXTREMELY hard time finding a QUALITY, I stress QUALITY barber. Like some of the other reviewers here, I too went to Floyd's 99, Birds, as well as some other well known barber shops. I was told by a friend to go see Kirby and that I wouldn't be disappointed... You can bet that I wasn't, from the second that I walked into the shop Kirby was welcoming and professional. I would recommend Kirby to anyone who asks where they can get a good hair cut in Austin. Kirby is legit. He knows men's hair and knows how to work a blade. I went in with my dad for cuts and shaves on my wedding day. We were accommodated promptly and Kirby went to work making us look like decent Americans. He isn't afraid to go against the grain on the shave, which means you will leave with the smoothest post-pubescent face you've ever had. The shop smells of bay rum and pinaud talc, like you'd expect. Price is very reasonable but the value is outstanding. Don't roll the dice at the mcbarber shops popping up all around Austin. Go see Kirby and get looking right. $31 for a shave AND a cut. Shave included hot towels, pre shave oil...the whole shebang. There is a guy who does shoe shines there, too. Location is right in downtown Austin so plan accordingly if you are driving. Still holds a grudge against Finley's -- Let it go man. Reasonable price, mediocre haircut. I assume his forte is beard trimming. HAD a decent set up when you were able to park a the Driskill, but then all of the sudden they aren't letting you park there and you find out by going back and paying $27 bucks for parking!!! Then you have Mr. Kirby (the beard trimmer) himself who has the audacity to constantly be running behind or just flat out late and which is fine, not a problem, but yet if you are 5 mins late 1 time out of 15 or more he tells you he doesn't have time anyways he's gotta go but that you have to pay double next time! Or and I quote "Don't Come Back" well you don't worry about that Kirby.(wonder if the name stems from sucking like the vacuum)? I will not ever step foot in your shop!
