The area was a bit sketchy but they had a private parking lot right next door with security there to watch your vehicle. They also had a lot of traditional items/supplies for tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and kimonos. I had fun looking through all the items as it brought me back to our summer in Japan. Apparently they have a long standing history in LA, having opened in 1946 after World War II. The shop occupies the site of the first Japanese-owned business in Los Angeles, circa 1890's. Pretty cool! I have a soft spot for everything animal shaped and soo.... I picked up a fun/odd felt tiger Christmas ornament, a cat pen, and a super cute bronze cat shaped spoon that hangs on the side of your cup. Did I need it? No.... but it's fun and makes me happy. Motley lives up (or down) to its name…read more I've got a few pieces of hard-to-find furnishings on my list, and was prowling around the Arts District hoping to spot something I liked. Motley was in the neighborhood so I overlooked the disheveled appearance of the store and walked in. The first thing I noticed was loud music -- not bad music, but so amplified that it felt almost hostile -- and a woman sitting at the back. We made our way through the maze and when we got near her, I asked about a piece near the front, as nothing in the store was identified or priced. She told me the price, which was astronomical, but nothing else about the piece that might explain the price. I looked at everything on the floor, including the small room spilling over with random (also unpriced and unsized) used clothing. Later, I found out the provenance of the piece that interested me -- still doesn't explain the price -- and also noticed that the Motley website is a 1stdibs storefront, which makes sense, I guess. They must get most of their sales via 1stdibs. Which doesn't explain why they even bother to keep open a storefront or hire a store minder who seems to like loud music but isn't that interested in what the store sells.

I'm not sure if the Man @ Motley thought I was a visiting Hipster that would pay any outrageous price or if he really did not want me to buy - Either way, I will never visit Motley again. They failed to deliver $400 worth of vases to my home TWICE. I had to call and text the owner and he responded with "oh Im sorry I forgot." These are for my wedding so you can imagine the added stress he created. I decided to come and pick them up myself and when I did, they asked what was included in my order. I had to show them my receipt and they started scrambling around to find the proper vases. Mind you, this was 3 weeks after I ordered them and told me they'd deliver It all within the week. Im addition to being negligent and unorganized, they're way overpriced and so incredibly rude. I grew up in LA and Im used to mean people but this lady (aka the owner) was on a new one. As I walked down to michaels, I found the same vases for half the price. I wanted to cry. Moral of the story, AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. What endears me to this shop is that it is housed in what used to be part of an old machine shop. It still has the original plaster and wood beams as well as old doorways for the upper levels of the old building. It just smells old and historic. You can't fake it. What I notice the most about this place is that it call itself a candle shop, but there's not many candles that are sold there. They sell LOTS of Dia de Los Muertos decorations, books, magnets, coffee mugs, post cards and other assorted items that are not candles. There is also an ofrenda that is up year-round. It is very beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I love this store and have bought many items from here. They also sell incense here. Here is where I leave with a slight headache because I cannot help myself and I HAVE to smell it all! I walked out with a collapsible clothing rack (intended to organize my backdrop linens, but I ended up giving it to my MIL for drying laundry lol), some acrylic displays for my makeup palettes, an organizer for watches/bracelets/bangles and other various organization displays. The gentleman here is very nice and easy to work with. I'll be making another visit for supplies once my she-shed is completed.
