    A bit of everything

While in the area for a race I found this shop close to my hotel. I intended to only grab a couple donuts as my "recovery" meal, but the selection was so great that I felt compelled to pick up a few extras. I was extremely happy with everything that I selected. If I had to choose a favorite, I'd go with the apple fritter. The cake donuts are nice too. Everything was well fried and not greasy. The owners were pretty cool, but the best part was the prices. Saying that I love little mom and pop donut shops like this one is an understatement.

After seeing great reviews on Google Maps, decided to take a detour on our trip heading south on the I-65 to K-May Donuts in Decatur, AL. Generally, I do not believe that K-May lived up to its 5-star rating. Although the donuts looked good on the shelf, they were thin and fell apart when eating. Also, the store was in need of a makeover. I met the owners, who were very nice, but need to invest more in the store facility and make the donuts more substantial. With improvements, a higher rating is possible, which is hoped for. When in the area, visit and report on their progress!

Regular glazed and chocolate cake wit chocolate frosting. Super delish.

This is a cute little coffee shop / gift shop type of place in downtown Decatur. Being that it's downtown, parking is a little bit of a hassle. I didn't have a hard time finding a spot midday on a Wednesday, but be careful backing out as you're backing right into the street. Inside, the shop is spacious and decorated nicely. It felt airy and peaceful and I could easily see myself catching up with a friend or reading or something. They have a midsize coffee menu, serve Piper and Leaf tea, and have some typical coffeeshop snacks (pastries, etc). One nice feature is a fridge with take and bake type meals and appetizers. That can prove really useful in a pinch! Service was extra nice here: welcoming smiles, patient with questions, and working efficiently. I appreciated that you can actually order a small iced coffee here. Many places only do iced in medium or large portion sizes. The small was just enough to perk me up for the ride home, but not so much I'd have to stop for a restroom, lol. I ordered an iced peppermint mocha as that's pretty much my favorite coffee drink of all time. This one was a good one! Not too strong on the peppermint and a discernible - maybe even stronger than average - chocolatey taste. Like a liquid thin mint! :) I enjoyed my drink on my drive home and look forward to returning for more next time I find myself in the area.

I love all nerdy things and had pinned Current on my to-try collection a while back. It's a little easy to miss driving around, but my GPS got me there. Parking is pretty limited -- the business next door had to ask some people to move because they'd created a spot behind the worker's truck, lol -- but I had a lovely experience once I found my way inside! They have a pretty large menu for a game cafe, and much of it is vegan or vegetarian. Pressed sandwiches, burgers, baked goodies, smoothies, all kinds of coffee drinks, and salads/wraps. I wanted something warm, light, and comforting. As simple as it may be, I was thrilled to find a pressed PB&J on the menu for a low price. I was offered my selection of a surprisingly large number of jellies (strawberry for me!) and my sandwich came out quickly. I had both a sweet tea and a latte -- hydration and stimulation! Lol. The food was good, and my mint mocha latte tasted just like an Andes mint. My favorite part of this place, though, is the vibe! Nerdy and inclusive. Wish all places could be like that. :) Fun merchandise from all kinds of anime, shows, games, movies, etc; board games; a tidy all-gender restroom; Pride flags of different flavors everywhere...it really did feel like a pocket of welcomeness. I don't see enough spaces like that in the southeast, sadly, and so it's extra nice when you do come across it. There were lots of teens and folks wearing alternative style hanging around in cozy couches and tables playing games and I just love to see it! While the game and card selection isn't /massive/, it's perfectly satisfying (remember -- not a ton of space in the building) and the staff was more than willing to help with people's questions. This is a wonderful space to hang out, make new friends (if games/anime/nerd culture is your scene), and grab a bite to eat. Give it a go if it sounds like your speed!

Now it's new and beautiful. The restroom was clean and well appointed. My barista was welcoming and cheerful. The three others were super busy with mobile orders and the drive-thru. This is a tiny building with seating for about 16 people. The reason for a 4 star review instead of 5 stars is the insane policy management imposes regarding coffee blend choice. Everyone complains about how bitter the Pike Place roast is, but that is the only option available without a pour-over after 9AM. Many other Starbucks have the same policy but push it until after noon. Starbucks sells many other roasts that taste great. Can't they keep one of them available pre-brewed? I've been to several other stores across the country where they featured a different roast in addition to the Pike Place roast all day long. Perhaps this store is too small to make that policy profitable. The previous negative reviews should show management that they need to step up to provide a better experience. The new building is a great start... now make better coffee. Here's some specific information for driving access. It's easy to get into the Starbucks parking lot and its drive-thru. The handicapped parking space is ~25-30' from the front entrance. Not ideal. There's a single driveway entrance which can get congested. As you exit it, be aware that you will be forced to turn right onto the main highway's service road. The reason for this is that a left turn will lead you to a (no left turn) situation where getting back onto the eastbound main highway requires using some parking lot diversion. The stoplight at the intersection you probably used (when you turned off the main highway) is not accessible directly. Instead your nav will send you a quarter mile to an intersection further west even if your next destination is east. I took the option of making that forced right turn and then making a U-turn equivalent by using a business parking lot immediately on the right.

For lunch you can choose from a large selection of sandwiches as well as the daily special. Today's special was Poulet de Normandy and a side item. My friends and I went with poulet and the grape salad as a side. All I can say is YUM. The portions were generous as well. One friend chose the Summer Tea, a minty sweet tea, my other friend choose peach tea and I had good old Southern Sweet Tea. All were delicious! I also had a regular coffee to sip on as we visited after lunch. The cafe is small but tables are well spaced and we were encouraged to sit and chat as long as we wanted to do so! The cafe ladies even made sure our glasses of tea were topped up as we left so we could take them to go. There is a patio room that is available for groups of up to 16. You should call in advance to reserve the space for your group. I think this is a wonderful idea for a spa know that I was impressed by the friendliness of the French Door Staff as they greeted us and pointed us to the Cafe. There are a few small cafe tables inside if you'd like to sit. The donuts are displayed nicely in a large case. They have a large variety of both cake and traditional donuts as well as kolaches. Decent bit of Spanish signage in the shop, too, which I thought was nice to have. The gentleman at the register was warm and polite. After some mental deliberation, I got a chocolate glazed and a red velvet cake donut. I was going to try both and eat the one I preferred and give the other to my husband, who likes donuts more than me lol. I thought the price was very reasonable -- two nicely made donuts for $2.15. They were packaged in a small sack and I was on my way! After sampling both, I decided I liked the red velvet better, though both were good! The chocolate glazed was just a touch drier. That said, the chocolate glaze wasn't super waxy or artificial tasting, which is a pleasant if slightly unusual find. The red velvet was super moist, cakey, and soft, with a stunningly bright red interior. Oddly it had a slight coconut flavor? I was all in cause I like coconut but I think its proximity to coconut donuts might have been the cause, lol. I'm not a donut connoisseur myself but this place offered a nice, quick snack complete with pleasant service. Worth a try!
