Although he was priced slightly higher than the other contractors we obtained pricing from, the quality of his work was worth the nominal difference in pricing. I am an architect and my husband a user experience designer. We were very selective about who we choose to renovate my first own home. Zephyr worked with my husband and I throughout the entire process. He coordinated all new plumbing and electrical re-wiring (with a licensed plumber and electrician), made suggestions when we were trying to mitigate a fast-paced decision making process, and executed the work on-time and on-budget. Being involved in the trade, I cannot stress enough how difficult it is to find a contractor who is reasonably priced and does the job right. I will be working with Zephyr again on my next project. We bought a fixer upper in 2008, and immediately hired a contractor to update our bedroom and bathroom. They burned us, and left us with leaks throughout the house. We ended up finishing the project ourselves, but not aware of some of the leaks and damage left behind. After this experience, we were hesitant to try again, hearing so many other peoples horror stories of their own with contractors. Finally the leaks became too much, and we needed to address them as well as move on with construction of our home. We were referred to Zephyr, and after his recent completion of our kitchen, we have already asked him to put us at the end of his list for our next project. What it will be, we haven't decided yet. But we have a whole house for him to repair, so we have something that needs to be done no matter what the order of repair is. Zephyr is very straightforward, and he is a perfectionist. He will give you advice along the way, and you should listen to him. He ripped out our kitchen, found multiple issues with leaks coming from our bedroom above (where the previous contractors installed french doors improperly), so he addressed that by taking out the doors and installing a new wall with windows. He replaced all our support beams in the kitchen, as well as added support so that we could build out on the 2nd floor. We told him our goals for the house in the long run and he prepared the house for those projects while working on it now. For example, we want to add a bathroom to our bedroom, so while he had the walls ripped open, he planned where the pipes would go and built enough room in that wall so that his next job would be prepped. Zephyr said he would have our kitchen done in 2 months and he delivered. Mitchell Custom Concepts may give you a higher quote than other contractors around, but they are worth every penny. Your project will be done properly, and by people who know what they are doing. Zephyr's whole team is great to work with. Whether Mike or Ian are at your house finishing something up, you can rest assured you are in good hands. Zephyr's vendors he uses for windows, floors, materials are all vetted and you know you will get quality materials/work from anyone he uses. We especially love our floors. Zephyr had his floor guy come in to sand and lacquer our floors, and I am beyond happy with the result. Before Zephyr and his team worked on my home, our basement would flood with 1-3 inches of water during rainstorms. Now, we don't get any standing water at all. Zephyr understands that your house is an investment, and he will address your biggest problems first, then work his way out. With us, he addressed all our leaks before we did any cosmetic work. I live on a pretty nosey South Philly street where all my neighbors watch whats going on with the rest of the neighbors all day long. Well, all I heard from my neighbors was "Your contractor was bringing in big pieces of lumber today. You must be getting a lot done!" "your contractor was here all day working!" and "Those guys working on your house are working hard. You must have hired good people". Yeah, we did hire good people.

I had several issues with this contractor. They are extremely sloppy they do not use drop cloths…read moreand i constantly had to clean up after them at night. After installing a new floor, they exposed it to the mud you use to tile a shower,as well as the Red Guard you use to waterproof the shower before tiling. I had to scrub the floor each night they left To get the mud residue and red guard drips up from the new uncovered floor. They also failed to protect a brand new acrylic tub while they were tiling and scratched in several places. I bought a repair kit at Lowe's and was able to buff them out at night after cleaning up the mess they made in the unprotected tub.They totally gutted my bathrooms and they do not own a Shop vac so they had to use our vacuum cleaner. They cleaned the cement out of a bucket and dumped the cement right in our garage which of course I had to clean up. They also started work prior to having a dumpster delivered so our garage was filled with junk for a week and a toilet fell over and smashed into pieces. They also cut tile with a wet saw in my garage instead of out in the grass away from the house. I had to power wash the entire garage and driveway to get up all the caked on dried up tile dust. Again because they don't drop cloth anything, they dripped tile residue all over our laminate floors and steps,as they carried the fresh cut dripping wet tile throughout the house. The contractor also has unusual hours, usually they averaged 4 hours a day 10-2 which drags the job out longer while your house is ripped apart. His proposal did say 5 weeks but I assumed that was 8 hours a day but I was wrong. He is a very good plumber and he did a nice job installing our floors in the bathrooms. The tile lines in one bathroom were good but the tile job in the last shower he did was terrible,he even installed a tile that was chipped and tried to cover it with grout.I am also hiring another contractor to come in and regrout the shower because it is terrible. My biggest complaint is the lack of respect they showed to our house with their sloppy work. I would not recommend them if you value clean, timely work, you will spend a lot of time cleaning up after them.

When we were choosing a contractor, Mr. Contractor's Yelp rating gave me some hesitation - especially given the high ratings elsewhere. But when I read the reviews themselves rather than just looking at the overall rating, many of the complaints seemed to involve relatively small jobs. We needed someone for a large, complicated renovation of a very old house, and the experience and capabilities Ken demonstrated seemed much better suited to that kind of project. Having now completed the job, I'm very glad we made that distinction. This was a big project, and our old house threw plenty of surprises at us. Once the demo began, our engineer found that part of the kitchen needed to be structurally rebuilt from the foundation up. That meant coordinating with our architect and structural engineer and substantially expanded the work. Despite that and the many twists and turns that followed, Ken and his crew kept things moving and completed an extraordinary amount of work in just 10 weeks. What really stood out was the crew. These guys were craftsmen who took genuine pride in what they were building. More than once, they spent extra time on something simply to get the finished result just right or recommended enhancements that were not charged. A friend who is a high-end interior designer saw the kitchen afterward and was impressed by the quality of the construction and attention to detail. We also lived in the house throughout the renovation. The crew was friendly and respectful, and they cleaned up the work areas at the end of every day -- something we came to appreciate enormously during 10 weeks of construction. Was every little detail perfect the first time? No. But that's actually part of why I'm comfortable giving Ken five stars. When something wasn't right, he worked to make it right. He and his team stayed engaged through the end of the project, addressed our punch-list items, and have continued to stand behind their work afterward. And we LOVE the result. The kitchen has completely changed the way we live in the house. It has become the place where our family naturally gathers, and it's as comfortable and functional to cook in as it is beautiful. The new bathroom has been equally transformative. At the beginning, I worried that we might be spending too much on the project - and it was significant. But by the end, having seen the amount of work involved and the quality and care that went into it, I felt exactly the opposite: we received very good value for our money. My takeaway is that Ken's particular strength is a substantial, complex project where you need an experienced GC who can keep multiple trades moving, deal with unexpected conditions, solve problems as they arise, and see the whole thing through. Renovating a 130-year-old house isn't easy, and I'd much rather have a contractor who knows how to deal with the inevitable problems and stands behind the finished product. We'd happily hire Ken and Mr. Contractor again.
