I have a few memories from my first visit to Knifewear's Edmonton location (although I don't remember the year - I'd say about the mid 2010s, give or take). The first knife I bought was a nakiri vegetable knife, which I still use to this day. This was not the only knife I bought from Knifewear over the years, and I love each knife I got from the store. Knifewear sells Japanese handmade knives, of all shapes and sizes, and price (from under 100$ to a few thousand dollars). Came to Knifewear to sharpen one of our knives and also to buy a Christmas gift for my husband. He's a big foodie and home chef so good tools make a big difference. This store has the best most professional knives. Most are handmade in the traditional method from Japan. They back up their knives with services like sharpening and chip repair. The girl that was helping me worked in the restaurant industry as a sous chef for many years before working at this cool place. She was so knowledgeable about what kind of knives are good for different needs. The knives feel so great in your hand and are extremely sharp which is the best when cooking! My favourite knives are from here and they even have awesome cutting board and wax for the boards. I brought my axe in here for sharpening and was so impressed by both Adam, on of the owners, and Chris. Adam was honest about what needed to be done to clean up the axe and only suggested the bare minimum rather than upsellling me which I appreciate. Plus he told me the city's E-Park system was free for the first 1/2 hour (at least it was when I went)! AND, he was able to get the sharpening done right away! While I was waiting Chris told me they are looking at starting up classes where they will teach people knife skills including how to sharpen their own knives. This is something I know I will definitely be looking into - as should you! We knew of Knifewear before it came to Edmonton because we had visited the Calgary store a few times. We were excited when we heard they were opening a store in Edmonton. We both like to cook so were hoping to get some nice knives for ourselves. They had an Opening Party when they first opened and this was my first time actually trying out the knives. I was very impressed by the staff knowledge of the knives and the high quality of the Japanese blades they offer. I ended up getting a medium length Chef's knife because it is multi-purpose and is the type of knife I use the most in the kitchen. I loved my Canadian Tire Santuko chef's knife and used it all the time so I figured getting something along that line would be my best bet for a first Japanese knife. I ended up getting the Fujimoto Nashiji Santoku 165mm. It was one of the more affordable knife lines but I really liked the look and feel of it. I now use it everyday for almost everything in the cooking department. These Japanese knives can sure cut! They can be sharpen to almost a razor thin edge. You can cut vegetables way thinner then you ever thought possible. You will want to get a honing rod so that you can keep your knife sharp. Every once in awhile you can take it back into the shop for a proper sharpening too. The store has lots of other cool kitchen gear as well. Stuff you won't find in your regular kitchen store. This place is a definite must check out if you do any work in a kitchen. The investment in a good kitchen knife is well worth it because they are probably the tools around the house that you use the most. read more

I stopped by Knifewear to get a lesson on how to use my honing rod properly. I received a beautiful Hikarigyuto 210 back in February for my birthday. The knife cuts beautifully with fine precision. It's a good everyday all purpose knife. I love that it came wrapped with a few sheets of the Japanese newspaper. Fun fact: the date on the newspaper was the day the knife was made. The staff was more than happy to show me how to use my ceramic honing rod. She was patient and gave me some great tips on the correct technique. I didn't know this place existed but as someone who loves to cook and understands the importance of having a sharp knife, I'm totally in love with it. The shop is long and narrow, and they've got plenty of display cases with a variety of beautiful knives at different price points and of different materials and styles. I think they are all Japanese knives but don't quote me on that - they are definitely not mass-produced knives. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and will take the time to chat with you and go over your needs, and help you find a knife that is perfect for you. Or if you are just browsing, they are fine with that too - there's no pressure to buy a knife. They also have a neat selection of cookbooks and some kitchen accessories (I didn't know ceramic sharpening 'steels' existed!), as well as an area dedicated to the art of shaving (as Trenton B. mentioned). How cool is that! The shop also does knife sharpening so I'll definitely be bringing my knives here from now on. Prices are on the high side but I don't know enough about these knives to know whether they are appropriately priced. Shamefully, I've never been one care for high quality knives and my own often go months before I give them a proper sharpening. However, my grandmother has a lovely collection of knives to help with her wicked grandma cooking, and I had to stop in this year to do some christmas shopping. The people who work here are extremely knowledgeable. They can tell you what the knife is made of, what region of the world it comes from, what it is best used for, and even the history of the maker. They are in no way pushy, and the best part is that their knives are very reasonably priced! We visited some chain stores to browse knives as well, and I must say that Knitwear had very comparable and even better prices in some cases. Boom. Our sales person even wowed us by demonstrating the sharpness of a boning knife by slicing a stack of newspaper with no problem- and the paper didn't tear! I loved that. Aside from an enormous collection of knives, they also offer sharpening services and a variety of other kitchen items including cook books and various utensils. Knifewear's selection of knives, cutting boards, cookbooks, and other kitchen gadgets is very impressive but what some of the other reviews are missing is the amazing men's shaving selection at the back of the store. The shave shop section is an offshoot of the Calgary-based Kent of Inglewood store and has a wide selection of straight razors, double-edged razors, shaving soaps and creams, shaving brushes, aftershaves, colognes, bowls and pretty much anything else you could possibly need for wet shaving. I'm relatively new to wet shaving and picked up a double edged razor from the store recently. The customer ahead of me was obviously a shaving enthusiast and spoke at length with the salesperson about different creams and blades. As a newbie, I sneakily eavesdropped as I learned about the sheer depth of a hobby shaving can be. When the salesperson was done with that customer, he was happy to go back to basics with me and did an excellent job relating to the newbies and the experts alike. Knifewear is obviously a great destination for kitchenwear but if you're looking to get into wet shaving or know a shaving enthusiast, I urge you to drop by the back of the store! read more

Let me first explain that I have a fear of knives...as in, my husband cheered when I picked up something other than a paring knife the other night! However, this is one cool place! I first experienced Knifewear at the Calgary Farmer's market and was so glad to finally make it into the full-sized Edmonton location. They have a huge selection and apparently are one one of two ways to get these knives from Japan (the other one being a booking a flight and shopping trip there yourself!) The staff are very knowledgable and patient and provide tomatoes to practice cutting - I was so impressed at the ease with which I cut (the thinest slice ever of tomato) that I could have almost been convinced to make a purchase. It would have taken convincing my hubby that the ones with the cherry blossoms were the best though...and I just wasn't up for that....yet! I'll be bringing my brother, the chef, there as soon as he comes for a visit though! read more

Service: they answered the phone. They told me it would take 10 minutes to sharpen my knife. Then I show r up and they deliver d as promised. I think it might've actually been shorter. My knife is now probably sharper than it has ever been. Great job!!! The staff is very knowledgeable about their products and understand that choosing a knife can take some time. They are very patient and will discuss the various attributes of each artist and their knife making abilities. I stumbled upon this shop, courtesy of a pre-Christmas Yelp Shop on Whyte Event. I've been back since to check it out. The selection of cookbooks here are extensively amazing; you'd have to check out this recommended amazing Artisan Bread cookbook. The staff here are very helpful. When I was trying out a knife, I was being corrected on the pressure I put on the tomato -- it's proof that I was rarely honing my knives. Two of their staff members offered me two variations of the honing demonstration, compared with a comical Chef Ramsay style, where he actually blunts the knife in the process for dramatic effects on TV. It was very helpful to have a demonstrated comparison with Japanese knives versus Western knives. I'm (really) convinced I need to attend their knife skills class. They appear to fill up fast -- I'll write an updated review once I've attended their class. read more

Had a awesome experience at Knifewear! Went to get knives sharpened and came back after New Years to grab them. I was greeted by amazing friendly service and real dedication to their craft. I will always go back there to get my knives sharpened and purchase knives. The people who work there are SOLID. Ive been having a hard time with finances these days ( who isnt?) and so I was delighted when I turned up SUPER LATE to pick up my knives to be greeted with a "Happy New Year!" and one of the staff (an old friend) gave me a sharpening on the house! I attended a free class on how to carve a chicken at the Roots on Whyte building (advertised in Blush Lane), and it turned out that the presentation was given by staff from Knifewear. The staff were very friendly, well-informed, and helpful during the presentation, both when it came to food preparation and on the topic of knives in general. After this experience I visited the store a couple times to look for kitchen knives and with my husband when he wanted a razor. The employees said that they had knives in a variety of price ranges, but I found that in general the prices were still too high for my sad student budget. I get that quality costs though, this isn't a criticism. OK, maybe this is just me, but I found the whole atmosphere in-store to be very pretentious. The staff were definitely knowledgeable, not pushy, and had no issues helping us out during our visits. But apparently, "looking cool" is a major selling point of an incredibly expensive razor, and both an axe and an $80 cocktail shaker were worth mentioning to folks shopping for razors. My husband stated, about the whole sales pitch, "it was pretty much awkward the entire time." The experience was analogous to enduring minutes of flair bartending when all you want is to grab a gin and tonic and go sit with your friends. Or artisanal pencil sharpening. Basically, overkill. I think this is probably the first place I'd stop if I actually had the money to spend on a knife, though, as the quality is definitely there, and the staff possess a unique expertise. read more
