If you are looking for an old school vibe hangout then Knight cap is the place for you. It's a small neighborhood bar that's cash only. One of the nice things here is that the the ATM fee is close to the cost of a draft pour. The bar was recently renovated and the ceiling was lifted making it a lot easier to move around. This was stop #2 on the pub crawl up 4th street. Right across the street from Mayslack's, so the convenience was undeniable. The metaphoric record scratched when we walked in here, which I really like and adds to the dive bar ambiance. Stronger than the stares, was the pungent aroma of some kind of cleaner. Like, I felt like I was placed INSIDE of a urinal cake. They had a surprisingly great selection of beers on tap, and I had some kind of IPA I can't remember! The beer was good, the service was good. I didn't have any food (after Mayslack's pile o' beef) Overall, it was just very average to me. Great dive bar! Was recommended by a friend and I felt at home with it! Coming from a small rural town it felt very familiar!

Could have been cool bar, thought the vibe had potential, but the bartender poured weak drinks and the bouncer realllly sucked unfortunately, just kind of weird all around to be honest. Won't be back myself, but don't let that scare you off too much, the decor was honestly great, just really hated the people running it tonight! Giving it a two star, but if you're in the neighborhood, it's not the worst place I just a suggest you do one of the other bars within a block if they're open. read more

This is stop 2 on our annual Nordeast Walking Tour. Raffles for meat and drinks rule the roost on Saturday afternoons. It was recently renovated and includes a really nice back patio/smoking area. I've been here now on several occasions but oddly I've always been at about a .2 when I walk through the doors. It's a nice little bar and it definitely has a towny north woods kinda feel to it. It's a cash only bar so bring some cabbage or prepare to take it in the rear with ATM fees at the machine on the premises. So I learned a few things the evening I was at the Knight Cap: 1. Don't drink Summit EPA exclusively for seven straight hours. (this was a lesson learned spanning several bars) This will lead to a King Kong size headache in the morning. 2. It's a great place to hone your social skills with the women since it's not a real trendy busy place. ( A guy watches a few episodes of The Pick Up Artist and he suddenly think he's God's gift to women). Anyway, I digress. The meat is fresh from Hackenmueller's in Robinsdale and the spread is magnificent! Every saturday from 12p-2p, summer, winter doesn't matter there is meat a plenty! I really like this place. It makes me feel like I'm in a small town bar. The setting is low key, nothing fancy. The demographic of patrons varies from you're fun loving late 40 year olds to 20-somethings of all dress, style and way of partying. There is not a feeling of unwelcomeness or like you're wearing something that was 'so last week' at some trendy scenster bar.There is a juke box, pool table, a few tvs and dim lighting. Seriously low-key, good times, good folks. They do have a menu that is chuck full of bar food finger foods. Pizza rolls, fries, mozzarella sticks, nachos, hot dogs etc. I'm not sure how late they serve food, but we were all ordering food up until atleast midnight. All the prices were pretty fair on the food. I'd recommend this bar if you're looking for a low-key, but hella fun night. There's good tunes playing, but you can still understand what everyone at your table is saying. There's decent drink prices. I wouldn't recommend going there solely for the food, it's good, but it's definitely finger food that you just chow down when you're feeling a little tipsy :) I had a really great time! read more

Yes! The Knight Cap. The perfect bar if you don't want to deal with 900 people and do not want to wait 20 minutes for a drink at the bar. Yet, it is still a place where you can be loud and play metal on the juke box if one desires. All types of folks frequent this bar. So if you stand out, you only have your own life decisions to blame. The bar does not take cards, so have cash or hit the ATM. They also have some pretty rockin beef jerky if you ask the bartender. I have taken advantage of their jerky on numerous occasions. The patio has a heated area with a TV that will be on TBS. So be ready to watch Home Improvement or whatever NBA game happens to be on. Pretty standard dive-ish bar. Last night there was live music, but they played outside and just played standard DJ stuff inside. Pretty decent tap list. Maybe ten? Three IPAs including one local one (Able). $5. I can dig it. We were out on the patio and some bro kept lighting and putting out his joint. Like 1) what a waste. 2) those poor security guards. Every time they'd come out back to look for him he'd put it out and light a cigarette to blend in. Hilar, but that must have been SO FRUSTRATING. The Knight Cap was our savior last Saturday after going to Oktoberfest. Every other bar in NE seemed to be jam packed. And after my group's frustration (at least the girls in the group) about spending half our time waiting in line for the bathroom, we wanted a place a little less busy. When we walked in, I was able to walk right up to the bar and order drinks for 3. When the bartender told me the total, I was certain he thought I had only ordered 2. It was ridiculously cheap. I also liked the jukebox so there is a variety of music. And they serve Heggies pizza. That really hit the spot at 130 am. read more

I loved this place. It was quiet and deserted, so if you and your friends want to go out somewhere that you can control the jukebox and rule the pool tables, this is the place to go. The drinks are strong, the bartender minds his own business and the bathrooms are clean. We had a great time here. They also had a great happy hour that included pitchers of beer and pizza. I have been here a few times on Thursday nights to hang with friends. They are on something of a dart-playing kick as of late. The Knight Cap draws an interesting crowd, from white-collar workers (wearing their dorky blue shirts with white collars) to jocks in their sweats. Drinks are strong and cheap, and darts are free. Chill dive bar with all women bartenders (love it). They have all been very kind and are down for good conversation. As a woman I have come here for a beer by myself after work and have felt very safe and welcomed. I dealt with a homophobic drunk guy and the bartender kicked him out immediately (also love). I have also seen them actually cut off people and seem to genuinely care for the patrons. Reasonable prices for drinks and good fried food. read more

This is such a solid establishment in the neighborhood. We visit enough where the bartenders don't need to card us anymore (or is it that we are just looking over 21? aw man) but not too much where we are here every weekend. I was just saying the other day "we haven't been to Knight Cap in a while". That's pretty decent considering the lack of atmosphere. I'm saying that in the best possible way too, because I LIKE that it's quiet on the weekends around 8 and that there is a spot waiting for me at the bar most of the time. We've met some cool people here and provided us with a good night following. The very first time we came here I didn't like it at all. The bartender was pretty much going out of his way to ignore us right there at the bar while there were no other customers to be waited on. It was a little ridiculous and gave me a weird vibe that you don't typically find in NE bars, where everyone is usually welcome. Well I obviously have gone back again, and I'm happy to report that brosef isn't bartending anymore. I enjoy the older gentleman that work the counter now. So thanks Knight Cap for not becoming one of the bars I try to avoid, because I love bar hopping in this little spot in Minneapolis. read more

Some friends wanted to go here after Psycho Suzi's one night. They really really wanted to go to a dive bar. This was it for sure! Any place that has a meat raffle and pull tabs is a legit dive bar. Came here a week or so ago with a couple of buddies got a pitcher of Summit (local brew) and it costed us $17+ dollars for a pitcher. Left soon after consumption of said pitcher. Ambiance, dark, and dingy, not sure what they are going for charging New York/Vegas prices with such little appeal to their bar. Mostly locals frequenting this location... Maybe next time. read more

After a flight in to Minneapolis we discovered this place while exploring the city. From the outside it looks like the classic neighborhood dive, which it is but is definitely cleaner than average. The customers were a wide range of people and the guy behind the bar gave us a warm welcome in the way of treating us like we were already friends. He was quick and communicative even if he couldnt get to us right away when we were ready to order more. The beer selection isnt huge, none the less they have some local craft and bigger batch fine beers to go along with a domestic or two. The prices were what they should be. Went pub crawling with a couple in-laws (future in-laws, but let's not split hairs). I and the other gentleman came here while Lisa and her sister paid the cover to go across the street and watch a 90's nostalgia band. The Knight Cap was much more our pace. On a Friday night it was not dead, but populated sparsely enough to let us breathe and move freely, and even throw a couple games of darts. Man, I suck at darts. We had a great time in this small neighborhood-ish space, though. It really reminds me of taverns in small towns outstate where I've spent a thousand happy nights in wood-panelled rooms with friends or with friends of friends. Also, the drinks are hands down the stiffest pours I have had this side of a Madison WI Halloween Party. I had two scotch sodas, and they kept me warm the entire twelve blocks to our next destination, and then some. I can't decide if I should recommend this place as the first pub in a crawl (rendering the rest moot), or the last (insuring a hangover). Maybe I should just say come here, stay, get lit, and lose at darts. It's still a beautiful way to spend an evening. read more

One of my fave NE bars. Full liquor license, cash only. 6 pulltab boxes, darts and a rotating machine (it used to be pinball, then a Golden-Tee rip-off machine, now back to pinball-- The Simpsons!). Meat raffle Saturday afternoon with Hackenmeuller's meats. When they run out of meat, they raffle off gift cards to Target, Cub Foods, etc-- something unique! Food is limited but decent typical bar food-- cheese curds, pizza rolls, beef jerky, fried mushrooms. I was there for a friend's birthday once and we ordered one of everything on the menu (sans pizza) and it was $62. So there's that. Strong, cheap drinks and nice bartenders. Barb, the pulltab lady, is one of my faves! We never win with her, but she's super nice! read more
