I went here with some friends and thought it was a perfect spot for a get together with the guys. It is has that dive-bar vibe which was perfect for what we were looking for. We ordered a pizza which was a Heggies which I think is solid. Had a couple beers and relaxed. We thought our server was fine yet not spectacular but he did seem to be working hard. Grumpy's is exactly what a great neighborhood dive bar should be. It's got a very local, punk vibe and feels like the kind of place where regulars actually know each other. They host all kinds of community events, which gives it a lot more personality than your average bar. The bartenders are awesome once they know you're there for the right reasons -- this definitely isn't a party bus full of freshly-21 crowd kind of place (that doesn't stop them but alas), and honestly that's part of why I like it. They've also got a really nice patio that's perfect in the summer (and smokers all year round, lol). If you want a genuine Northeast Minneapolis bar experience, Grumpy's is hard to beat. read more

Good deals on booze. Friendly relaxed environment. Cool people. This was the third stop on my birthday bar hop. We played a round of darts for $2 and walked outside to their back patio with a few beers. There is a fence full of beer signs for a photo opt! Our mission that night was to find a bar that could do pickleback shots (whiskey and pickle juice chasers). Whenever our groups gets together WE MUST HAVE A ROUND. Unfortunately, they did not have pickle juice as they typically do not serve food, but the bartender did recommended a grapefruit chaser with Jameson shots. That hit the spot until our next location, and we had a few MN brews before we left. Overall I will return on a weeknight to chill and have a beer. Free street parking. read more

For a dive called "Grumpy's", this location is pretty festive and eventful. This is my favorite Grumpy's location (vs. North Loop/DT + Roseville), and not just because it's in my neighborhood. This one's smaller, a little more intimate/low-key and a tad more dive-y. Grumpy's throws great seasonal block parties, like during Art-A-Whirl, and even slang free corned beef & cabbage on St. Patty's. Music line-ups range from folk to punk, which I love. The owner founded a record label, after all. Grumpy's NE doesn't have a full kitchen but they have frozen pizza and $1 Hotdish on Tuesday nights (until they run out). You mostly just go for the drinks anyway. Every day they feature Grumpy Hour specials from half off wine bottles to $3 for 2 domestic beers. Here's your next trip to Northeast: dinner at Hai Hai, dessert at Crepe & Spoon, and then drinks drinks and drinks at Grumpy's. read more

Grumpy's has got to be the biggest misnomer since 'The Never Ending Story'. Maybe I just got lucky, but this was the happiest bar I have ever come across in all of the Twin Cities. Not for any particular reason either. The Vikings weren't on the team winning a playoff game, a band wasn't playing, nothing at all like that. I just happened to walk in on an early evening on a ho-hum Friday but everybody was as jolly as can be. From what I can tell Grumpy's has a calendar loaded with all sorts of fun stuff, like Hot Dog Tuesday's, a DJ that will play whatever wax you bring on Thursdays, trashy movies in the patio, etc. A fun filled calendar like that is the mark of a good bar, indeed. read more

I love great dive bars and Grumpy's is a great dive bar. Great tap selection right alongside tall boys of your dad's favorite domestics. Old beer swag abounds. While I haven't yet witnessed it myself, I just know that it's full of old men day-drinking and going to town on the $1 hotdish on Tuesdays. I'm sure a few of those old boys even take an occasional snooze right at the bar. It's also full of the hep cats, the hippies, the rock 'n' rollers, the hop hippers, the beatniks or whatever the attractive young popular kiddos with rude 'tudes and tattoos are called these days. Got to Grumpy's at about 11 on a Friday night and managed to snag one of the last tables with some friends. The atmosphere is very fun and lively and the drink prices aren't bad at all. Grumpy's is not a clean place but it still has all the charm of a local dive bar. I'll definitely be coming back and recommend this place highly! read more

A few people seem to be lumping all grumpy's into one, the NE location only serves Heggies Pizza. A dive bar in NE Minneapolis with decent beer selection and heggies Pizza. I enjoy coming as it's generally laid back crowd. Bar clearly has it's regulars, I've seen people walk in from the street and the bartenders will have their beer out and ready for them before they even sit down. Usually not waiter/waitress service, so if you go and grab and table and wait, you'll be waiting for awhile, you have to walk to the bar yourself....but bartenders are friendly. It's also only a short walk to the double deuce, so it's got that going for it. Not my favorite NE place, but I do enjoy going in for a brew. read more

Only been here once but I was quite impressed. I LOVE dive bars and this place is small and dive-y with a fairly large patio. But that wasn't even the best part for me: it was their incredible beer selection! I'll admit it, I'm a huge beer snob, so it takes a lot for a bar or restaurant to impress me with their draft selection. There were several beers I'd never heard of, as well as a few obscure favorites of mine -- Bent Paddle's Bent Hop IPA on Nitro?! A beer from Crooked Stave, my favorite Denver brewery specializing in sour beers?! Nice work, Grumpy's. Staff was great, too. They had a few servers that would come out periodically to check if anyone on the patio needed another round and to clear away empty glasses. Before I moved to Nordeast, I always heard about these hip, funky bars that most people consider to be dives, but really aren't. Then I actually moved here and discovered that these purported "not actually dive bars" were, well, really not that great and generally kind of scuzzy... dive bars, if you will. Sorry Mayslack's, Knight Cap, and 1029 but you know it's kind of true. So the other week when some friends invited me out to Grumpy's, I knew what I was in for. Or so I thought. The tap list here is phenomenal! They carry your standard beers that taste like water but have an excellent real beer selection, including Fulton, Surly, and Summit (among, many, many others). No suspiciously cheap pitchers of pale beer here, friends! Pricing, while maddeningly not listed on their board of brews the night I was there, ended up being thoroughly affordable. As in, four pints for right around $13 - totally fair for the great quality. The room itself was a little small, but was redeemed by the lively and nicely-decorated patio in back. So thank you, Grumpy's for making me believe in this fabled creature known as the "hip" dive bar. read more

I came here last night with a friend, I'm from out of town and had never been there before. It was pretty quiet for a Friday night and we were able to get seats at the bar. My friend and I were sober when we arrived, and a couple of guys next to us struck up conversation with us. I had three beers and a shot, which would normally leave me tipsy, but the next thing I remember is waking up on my friends couch. One of the men we were talking to had drugged my drink. I'm not blaming the bar for me getting roofied, but their response to the situation was less than satisfactory. The bartenders were conversing enough with us to notice of my drastic intoxication, but I was told by my friend that they were the opposite of helpful. I was falling asleep in my chair and the female bartender started yelling at me asking who I was with. My friend kept trying to explain that she was with me, but the woman dismissed her and kept yelling at me (but didn't take my drink?) She then called the bouncer over to have me leave, and my friend (who was sober) had to convince bouncer to let me sit on a stool inside until our uber arrived because I couldn't walk. Once the uber arrived, my friend, who is like half my size, had to carry me out by herself. No one helped her. Not the bouncer, none of the bartenders, no one. Even if I was just a wasted girl at a bar and not someone who had been roofied, the respectful thing to do would be to help. P.S. if you see a guy there with a gap tooth, dark hair and glasses, punch him in the face for me. read more

Didn't realize that Grumpy's Nordeast was SO different from their other locations. I could see this being a fun dive bar in NE Minneapolis. They had a decent beer selection. But, it was a pretty small, had no service at the booths (at least while we were there), the booths weren't wiped up well. All that would have been fine, but there was one big disappointment: No food! I love Grumpy's burgers and tots at the downtown and Roseville locations and had incorrectly assumed that the NE location had a similar menu. However, the only food they had to offer was heated frozen pizza. Fine for a night out drinking, but very disappointing otherwise. Don't go here expecting anything similar to the other Grumpy's in town. It has its own very different offerings and vibe. read more

I feel like I should really love this place, and that it should be worthy of 5 stars. It's a place of many firsts for me: first date with my fiancee, first bar I visited in Northeast Minneapolis, first place I enjoyed a Surly, the list goes on and on. It's a great dive bar with a ton of appeal...but I have this weird feeling like I've entered some northeastern clique the past few times I've been there to enjoy trailer trash trivia and a beer. The place has a great location, great atmosphere with all of the Hamms and Grain Belt decor...and the crowd is a great mix of city folk which can be good or bad depending upon your feelings... Things I love about Grumpy's: - The service is great. The bar staff are awesome people here - The beer selection, it's very diverse, and constantly changes. Surly has a great presence here. -The pizzas are top-notch for a dive bar. - They put Guinness in their Bloody Mary - Ms Pacman/Galaga video game in the doorway. -They have a Vinyl night, Hot dish (delicious) night, Trivia night...all of which are worthy of attending. -I love Northeast, and this bar defines the area for me. There are a number of things that bother me about Grumpy's: - The prices for the tap beers are not advertised on the chalk board. I hate having to ask the bartender how much that special Surly tap costs before I have them pour it. I feel like a prude for asking, but I don't want to encounter sticker shock either at the end of the night. - The seating can get a bit cramped, and it simply stinks to see places where tables and chairs could go...and instead there is empty space. I hate standing in the door looking like a fool for an open space. Could you add just a couple more tables and chairs? - The format of the Trivia night needs to be changed. Currently there are no rules that limit the amount of members that can be on a team. This creates an unfair advantage where one team may have 9 members while there are some with couples...9 brains beats 2 brains...hate to say it, it does. So does pulling out your blackberry or IPhone to Google answers...I am always appalled at the lack of scruples in this crowd when it comes to cheating. It takes away from the fun...and gives me a sour feeling for this bar. Especially when I get my bill for beer and a pizza at the end of the night. My suggestion is to limit team sizes to 4, and to implement tougher penalties if you are caught surfing by your neighbor next to you. The crowd should be able to police each other. Despite these things, you'll run into me here if you visit often. I am a fan, and always will be. read more

What a great dive bar!! This place rocks!! HUGE beer selection and a pretty decent wine selection, which surprised me. This is a cliassic Northeast place and the crowd is a little bit of everything from working class to hipster. Nice outdoor patio as well. On Wed. nights PBR tallboys are $2 and Bernie throws down the live trivia too! So much fun!! Hot Dish Tuesdays look fabulous, but I haven't been yet...but I'm sure to go. How can you NOT for a buck a bowl. But get there early, because once it's gone, well, it's gone. This fall they are starting Tbone Bingo, which is like a meat raffle but with bingo! Before you pull up to Grumpy's in Nordeast, you know you've found the place when all of the parking spaces for the past three blocks have been packed tighter than a pack of Velveeta singles on a July afternoon. When you step in, it's hard to get your bearings because it's packed full of college students, thirty-somethings, blue collar working-class types and retirees. Put another way, it's a local neighborhood bar in the best sense. But unlike the stereotypical corner bar; dark, filled with smoke and lousy beer, this place is adequately lit, smoke free (as everywhere is now) and jam packed with stellar beers. The beers are the highlight. Packed with local and craft beers, as well as imported and rare specialties, there's not a tap wasted on Bud, Coors or Miller. Fridays, though are the key. Grumpy's Firkin Fridays are not to be missed (but don't tell anyone, it's packed already). They take a firkin of cask-conditioned ale and hand-pull pints while serving free snacks to keep you going. This week, the ale was Fulton's amazing Libertine and the snacks were markedly absent, until I realized that they were roasting a whole pig in a Caja China--a Cuban-style pit roaster. Went there for my birthday dinner, and had never been there before. It was not really that busy so I was assuming the wait wouldn't be too long. Whole process from getting drinks to our food took way too long. Was hoping the ambiance would be cool and could have found a new go to place, but the service was too bad for me to return. My girlfriend did not feel well after eating the Alfredo and after we got home she got sick. Other than that food was in general adequate but the fries were actually very good. I love this bar. Dare I say that this is probably my favorite bar in NE! There is something super cozy about it. I love the patio on the summer as well. Feels like you are sitting in a friend's back yard. The smell of the delicious pizza cooking gets me every time though and we end up ordering some. Thanksgiving night, picture it: Southern California girl (not the beach blonde valley girl or paris hilton wanna-be trust-funder steroetype, mind you) walks into a bar... and falls in love. The bar is simple in decor, with plain black walls almost everywhere, and the most gorgeous felt vintage wallpaper behind the bar (amber colored with maroon fleur de lis type designs all over.) There is a large radiator to warm you up if you're not used to the cold weather, like me, and even a fire pit in the back for the smokers. There were also neon beer signs hung up all around, for illumination and a more cozy feel. Everyone I encountered was immediately warm and inviting (even regulars, to whom I stick out like the sorest of thumbs.) Our bartender was Nick, who was attentive in a way you don't see too often. Everytime he would walk by our table, he asked how we were on drinks, even though he was the only one working and didn't have to come out from behind the bar at all. As it got busier, his attention to us became more impressive each time. There was ample seating, with five or six booths lining the far wall, four or so tables in the middle of the room, and of course stools edging the bar. Outside, there were four tables with four chairs each, for anyone daring enough to brave the harsh Minneapolis climate (I was at first, and my guts waned throughout the evening.) Finally, jukebox. Fan-tas-tic. There was a good variety of music types, but what really got me... Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. If Grumpy's hadn't won me over already, it would have after I saw that. read more

Absolutely love this place! The type of bar I can only wish was available in Eden Prairie. Beer selection is great, locals, microbrews and the big breweries all represented. Food is awesome! I have been twice before concerts when they have the "Stadium Menu" which is good (avoid the stadium nachos). Build a #$*&! burger is on the stadium menu as are the chicken fingers and dummies, so small/quick menu for game days. Where Grumpy's really shines is on your regular any-day of the week menu. Poutine, burgers and more. I shared the poutine as a appetizer, had the hot pastrami sandwich and my gal had the Rachel. Excellent food, huge portions, we took leftovers home. I cannot recommend a better place if you are looking for that dark, "hole in the wall" with excellent service, cool atmosphere, great prices, multiple beer and drink selection and wonderful food! There's no kitchen and usually no waitress, but drinks are outrageous cheap and delicious strong and there is haphazard live music (Har Mar Superstar at 4pm on a Sunday?
