Just what my friend and I were looking for tonight! After a chilly day outside and a failed attempt to eat at a different spot because it was too busy we arrived at 1029. Looked busy from the outside based on all the parked cars but we walked in and immediately found a table. A mellow crowd, some at the bar, some playing darts, some enjoying food at nearby tables. Our server was quick to greet us and take our drink orders. I tried the Spicy Lemonade, not spicy, but tastes like lemonade. Not impressive but I wasn't expecting a fancy cocktail from a dive bar. Appetizer: Jalapeño Cheese Curds! Yum!!!!! Really tasty! Leg of lamb sandwich for me! Super tender meat accompanied by a yummy stock? (I'm guessing) as the dipping sauce. Fries on the side tossed with old bay, yay! Love them! And my friend had the incredible bacon Mac which I could honestly eat all night it is so good. I was so excited to finally try this place! We got unlucky in the sense that there was some kind of cornhole tournament or competition happening when we arrived so parking was hard to find. But once we got there, we sat outside on their lovely patio and were helped right away! I got the Mac n cheese and my friend got the shrimp basket. The Mac n cheese was really good but very rich so I could only eat about half, but at least I had leftovers! If you're worried about the idea of corn in Mac n cheese, don't be. I could barely taste it and it just add a little pop. My friends shrimp basket looked good, the shrimp were on the smaller side but I think I'll try that next time! read more

Though they do have the typical bar food for the most part, there is something for everyone and something to say as the original smack shack. My husband said that the clam chowder was a 4 out of 5. We split a wedge salad hamburger and it was very good. The bun could be improved upon - it was not anything special or incredibly yum or anything like that - very average. The bartenders were attentive and made a good drink. They have a few choices on tap for beer - a bit better selection that at your average dive bar. The wings were good - flavor seemed like it was buffalo (they have one flavor called 1029). It's a dive bar in NE Minneapolis. Typical seat yourself and menus at the table. Visited on a Saturday afternoon right around lunch time and the place was pretty full, people appeared to have arrived very early for 2pm bar bingo. It took about 10 minutes for our server to greet us and ask us what we'd like for beverages. We all picked water... the champion of hydration. :-) When she finally returned we ordered and split the jalapeño cheese curds, patty melt, and onion burger. Jalapeño cheese curds were pretty decent- definitely NOT spicy. Patty melt was my least favorite as it had an odd sauce on it that my pallet was not a fan of so, I wouldn't get that again. Onion burger was the best thing we ordered. The amount of onions on the burger were the best. What lacked for me was the service. I understand a bar is busy around lunch time, however, when your server is visiting with her customers that appear to be more like friends to her, it's irritating as a customer. Especially, when you're waiting for a refill on your beverage of choice and/or your check. My time is just as valuable as a customer and I feel like I don't matter as a customer. The lack of checking in is very rude and just leaves me with a bad taste. You really feel unimportant as a customer when you receive service like this. read more

It's a dive, obviously. It smells like stale beer and there are flies everywhere. Although the stale beer smell is expected in a dive, the flies were pretty gross and off putting for me. The table was a little sticky and gross too. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting. They could benefit from some light cleaning! The server was super friendly and our food came out really fast. Went out to 1029 for a friend's birthday and we were lucky enough to get a spot that seated 8! (Most of the seating at 1029 is limited to 4 or less, really.) They had a special burger going on - the Oktober fest burger - which was topped with sauerkraut, mustard, and two scotch eggs. Boy was that burger filling, but also super unique)! Loved the fries. Service was good, and atmosphere is always what you want or expect from a dive. :-) read more

We did takeout from the 1029 Bar a few weeks ago, and this place offers up some Smack Shack classics which you may have already had at their full location out in North Loop. This time I opted for the shrimp basket with fries and it was absolutely delicious. The box is packed to the brim with shrimp and fries that are all super crispy. Hit it with the lemon juice and dip it into the special sauce, and you have a perfect meal. I could eat this everyday for the rest of my life and be happy. I did not stay at the bar however, and based on my brief interaction picking up the food, I probably will stick to the 1029 bar for takeout/dining and not really for hanging out for drinks. It's very much a dive bar with an older clientele compared to some of the other nearby bars in Northeast. I will definitely be coming back for takeout soon though, absolutely incredible! read more

Decent dive bar in the River North area. Stopped by to watch the SDSU Final 4 game. The service was a bit confusion, but I'm pretty sure they were understaffed because the whole place was packed and I only saw 1 server running around. After a good 20-30 minutes, I was able to ordered some wings, they were juicy and crispy, however I think either the server or the kitchen screwed up, it took about 45 minutes to come out. Drink were cheap, but fighting your way to the bar with locals/regulars acting like the own the place were a bit annoying. Maybe I'll return one day to check out their other food items and bingo which sounds pretty fun. read more

Great place for to hang with friends and have some great food. Prices are a little steep on the lobster roll, however lobster in general is going to bring a high price. If your willing to spend a little extra you won't be disappointed, the Lobster Roll was amazing. The Clam Chowder was also very well made, I would suggest getting a cup along side your meal. The Sausage Po Boy was ok, not super flavorful for andouille sausage, however I'm not an expert on andouille so take this with a grain of salt. No matter which sandwich or roll you get make sure and order the fries, they were perfect. We finished the night off with Lobster Mac-n-cheese, it seemed to be lacking some flavor and there wasn't much lobster present. However, if you love super cheesy Mac, they got in spades here. Lots of seating with high top tables in the back of the house. Not that big of beer selection and no cocktail menu or at least that was offered to us. read more

I took my son to the 1029 for lunch while he was home on military leave. I had the lobster roll hot and he had the lamb sandwich. We were both very happy with our meal. The server was very friendly and attentive . The weather was nice, so we enjoyed our lunch on their patio. It was clean with beautiful flowers framing the patio. I also used the restroom, which was also clean! 1029 honors police officers, inside the bar restaurant were some very cool pictures... 1029 is a fantastic divey bar that I went to with a born and bred local on a night out for drinks. The drinks are cheap and the service was quick and cheerful. Our mixed drinks came in 16oz plastic cups. Wonderful. We went on a Saturday night so it was pretty busy up front at the bar where there was some sports playing on the TV and there was a vibrant karaoke scene going on in the back. From what I understand this place is known for the karaoke. They also have an outdoor patio that is great on warm summer nights. read more

Tuesday night BINGO was really fun! I had no idea you could play Bingo so many ways. I had heard alot about this place and was willing to check it out even though it was a dive bar. I am not big on seafood but I am up for trying new things. The staff were nice, the Bingo was so fun, and the food was comfort food. The lobster mac and cheese was filling and the lobster grilled cheese with chips was super hearty.
