Knight's Excavating recently replaced our sewer line using the pipe busting method. They did a great job and were pleasant to deal with. The job required digging twice into the city street, but they did so without complaint. I should mention that they took great care in restoring our front yard/garden to its original state, including a gravel walkway with curved metal edging. The entire crew is hard-working, polite and very patient with questions and requests. I'd have no hesitation hiring them again. Recommended, to be sure. read more

Bob Knight does stellar work, with an eye for detail and literally years of local experience to back it up. We needed grading work to redirect water from impacting the foundation at the back of our house. And we wanted to have that water (and water from our downspouts) end up nicely in a rain garden out front. Bob Knight is a racist and complete nightmare to deal with. Smells like he showered in Coors Light and he clearly feels the same way about deodorant as he does ethnic people. I met Bob through a neighbor that was getting some work done by him. I inquired his opinion on moving a shed on my property. He was extremely informed on what he was doing, and even offered to lend me some large, somewhat expensive PVC pipes to help the process along. We'd bought an old house on a busy Ann Arbor Street (Miller). One of the first things to go wrong was a broken water service pipe from the street to the house. It looked like we would have to get a permit to close the street to get big equipment in and dig a trench to the house, tearing up the sidewalk and a hedge in between. However, Knight's came in with a smaller trencher eliminating the need to close the street. They were able to go under the sidewalk and hedge, put in the new pipe, wait for the city inspector and be finished within a couple of hours. Also, the price was reasonable! Whew! read more

We had a break in our sewer line from the house to the sewer grinder pump, I called Knight's Grading and Excavating and they came out within the hour, knowing that we did not have a working sewer or running water due to the issue. Terrible service. I contracted Knight's to do a video camera inspection of a sewer line for a house under contract. When I booked the appointment, I was assured that the person would be able to record the video inspection (in order to show proof to the home seller for concessions). Upon arrival, the workers said the video recorder was broken. Then the quote came in $2500 higher than the exact same job that they did for the neighbor just one year prior (this is Michigan. We are in a recession!). Finally, they didn't even provide me a quote in writing or email, even after I made a second request in email. Meanwhile, the $200 video camera inspection check was deposited immediately. Avoid this company. read more

We moved into a house in Dexter and at the final walk through before signing, the city of Dexter came to let us know that we had a defunct water line and that they were shutting off the water. The owners did not want to pay for this, but we were able to get them to pay just before signing and secure Bob Knight to do the work. We didn't have water and were a bit panicked and disheartened. I had a terrible experience with Knight's, which I had a change of heart and was going to remove until I saw my neighbor rated them highly. Here's the thing. We share a driveway and the neighbor hired them. While their work seems OK, the owner treated me and my family terribly. He shouted at his son, at us (his son apologized to us for his father's behavior), he ranted about "Ann Arbor people", he accused me of "going to" say things I never said, and was basically the most unprofessional contractor I have ever seen, with anger management issues. He has a huge chip on his shoulder. Be careful. read more

We hired Knight's Grading and Excavating to replace our water service line from the street into our basement. We talked to five contractors and Knight's came up with by far the best plan to avoid digging up our front yard landscaping. They submitted a detailed proposal and their price was fair. When excavating for the new line, they found large boulders appearing to be from an old foundation. It took extra time to remove them and the old fill could not be reused. Knight's supplied new fill at no extra charge. Bob and his crew did exactly what they said they would do, completed the job and cleaned up in one day. They also saved our brand new sidewalk and a 30 year old sage plant that was right next to the excavation site. read more

We had a sewer line break in mid-winter and got quotes from others who clearly didn't want to be digging up the street at that time of year. Knight's quote was reasonable and they started work immediately. The break was right at the city line, nearly twelve feet down under the opposite side of the street from the house. Excavation on day one, city permit, break fixed, city signed off on the work, refilling the hole and repaving the street all on day two. High quality work in nasty conditions, and Bob Knight himself was always responsive and available for consultation. His crew knew their stuff .. no amateurs .. the street was always safe (overnight, the large hole in the road was very well indicated), and heavy equipment was used skillfully and responsibly (lots of young children in the neighborhood). You can only to resurface a street temporarily when it's freezing; Bob and crew were back a few weeks ago to put down the permanent surface. Very happy with this company and would recommend them. read more

I cannot attest to the quality of service done by Knight's Grading & Excavating, as I have never contracted them, but recently they were hired by my neighbors to grade the lawn of their new home. I was outside with my two 10 month old dogs, which each weigh around 45 pounds, while the owner and an employee of Knight's Grading & Excavating were doing the final grade on my neighbors lawn (a yard that my dogs had been allowed to play in all their lives). My dogs ran towards the owner of Knight's Grading & Excavating and into the freshly graded lawn, which caused them to have to re-rake a small portion of it. I will be the first to admit that the behavior of my dogs was unacceptable; however, I did yell at them and return them to my yard, before they had reached the owner, with every intention of keeping them there so as not to disrupt the work going on next door. My complaint with Knight's Grading & Excavating lies in the way that the owner reacted to the situation. I understand that a dog running at you can look threatening, but I feel that that does not justify his response to the situation. Instead of politely asking me, or even impolitely asking, He said to me "keep your d*** dogs off my final grade" and then threatened to harm them if they were to run into his work area again. This resulted in a verbal exchange between the two of us that I feel was an entirely inappropriate interaction between a business owner and the neighbor of his client. I feel that the manner and language used by the owner was inappropriate and insulting. After both of us had cooled down the owner made no attempt at apologizing. It is my personal opinion that if you wish to have your work done in a polite manner that will help keep your interactions with your neighbors as positive as possible you should probably take your business elsewhere. read more
