I was visiting NYC when I went to Knitty City. I think this is a really good yarn store. When I used to live in Boston, I would go to Gather Here in Cambridge. It's a nice store, but I think I prefer Knitty City because they are not one of those yarn stores that are snooty about knitting and don't hold the same respect for crochet. Knitty City had knit and crochet swatches and the workers were nice and knowledgeable on both. They also have a large amount of books ranging from patterns to children's books! The only thing negative I would say about this store is the high prices on a lot of the yarns, but they are very nice and I was able to get mine on sale. The most abundant brand at this store is Malabrigo which is good yarn. I'm glad that the yarn isn't super obscure because I am not local and can get more online if needed. Overall, my experience here was wonderful and I'm glad I went. Totally recommend if you're local or just visiting!! read more

This shop is so cute, it's simply yarn galore the second you walk through the door! It's just wonderful! They even have a shop kitten, apparently it was rescued from the streets and now belongs to one of the employees who walks around the shop with this little kitten on his shoulder, it's so cute! read more

While walking by, this store seems incredibly vibrant and welcoming. However, when I actually entered the store and I was greeted by an incredibly rude and condescending staff member that felt the need to mock me before answering my question. I also saw a woman getting a knitting lesson and the same staff member was continuously chastising her in a patronizing and snippy manner. The overall environment was negative and unfriendly. I will not be returning. This place is only suitable if you want to be yelled at by snobbish staff members. read more

First off, I am not a knitter but I have been to A LOT of knitting stores all over the east coast with my mother who is an avid knitter. This store had a nice selection of yarn; however, I was in the store by myself to buy yarn as a Christmas gift for my mother and the salespeople completely ignored me. I was in the store for at least half an hour and not a single word was said to me until I approached someone at the counter. I realize we are in Manhattan but this store exemplified the some of poorest customer service I have ever encountered. Rude, pretentious, inattentive staff - even when I asked for help the woman pointed to and responded "that wall." Maybe it was because they realized I am not a knitter and therefore, somewhat clueless, but I was in the store to spend money, some assistance would have been appreciated. Left the store empty-handed because of the downright snobby service. Big disappointment. read more

The good: 1) Knitty City has a nice selection of luxury yarn. 2) They do frequently offer discounts (usually 10% on a specific brand of yarn), which is the only reason I still frequent the place. 3) They have a nice accessible location with reasonable hours that are clearly marked on their website The bad: The shop is a cluttered, disorganized, mess. There is yarn EVERYWHERE. There are frequently boxes and bags of yarn on the floor. The yarn seems to be organized by gauge first and brand second. However sample projects are hanging covering the shelves so not only do you have to navigate the boxes, bags, and PILES of STUFF on the floor you also have to push aside sample projects so you can see the yarn. The shelves are labeled but it seems that yarn just gets placed wherever it will fit. (ie Cascade might spill over to a Blue Sky shelf). Of the times I've been there the staff has not once greeted me or offered any assistance. I have however witnessed them helping other customers, so I suppose I was one of the unlucky ones. There is a large section with books and resources in the front of the store. It looks cluttered, but it does seem to be an impressive selection. The bottom line is if you are looking for a specific colorway you better flag someone down to help dig it out of wherever it is residing or you will likely walk away frustrated. read more

Very unhelpful staff. I came here because I needed help and thought they could provide me more insight rather than just going to Michaels. I walked in and wandered for about 10 minutes until I saw a staff member walk out and I had to approach her for help. After I explained to her I had no idea what I was doing, she told me to pick out my yarn and then we will continue from there. However, once I finished picking out my yarn, she was sitting at the knitting table sticking on labels and chatting with someone knitting. She forgot that she was helping me. I asked her if there was anyone else that was available to help since she was so busy talking to someone knitting. She didn't even offer to continue to help like she said she would. By that point I just was fed up with the lack of help that they provide here and walked out. They are just as unhelpful as Michael's. read more

A cute lively store. Full of people and bubbling over with beautiful yarns but very expensive. In hunting around my husband didn't see anything under $10, not even for spot where the yarns were 25% off. I love sheep feet sock yarn and was excited to see they carried it but it was exactly 2x the price I paid for the same yarn elsewhere. eep! I would go there if I was in the area and needed to pick something up, but it will never be a go-to store for me. The customer service here was fine -- mediocre. No one approached me but the place was packed full of folks at 2:30pm on a Friday. Two women were knitting at the table (one a regular and the other someone who worked there) talking somewhat snidely about the customers. Just kinda weird. For people who needed help, there seemed to be enough folks to help them find what they need and to give them pointed on how much yarn they would need, etc. read more

Must visit for yarn lovers!!! I have been to many stores across NYC (Downtown, Annie & Co, Purl, Seaport, School...); I'm surprised to say Knitty City became a favorite! I love the wide selection of fibers but even happier to see healthy price range from affordable to more luxurious/expensive yarn. I live closer to Purl Soho and so naturally I must stock up there more frequently but aside from Purl brand yarn, their selection is slim...making it necessary to visit another store to find variety. Knitty City definitely seems more like a one stop shop which is a HUGE plus and makes the commute worth it. There is plenty of eye candy and things to browse if waiting for yarn. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful, and super friendly...it's like walking into a knitting community. Definitely will visit again!! read more

I walked in the door with skull printed tights with Chuck's and immediately had a conversation with a pretty pregnant UWS woman and a rather conservative looking woman about how well she carried her pregnancy...and yarn. If there is valley where all types and personalities can come to sit down and crochet or knit, this shop is it. Pearl Chin, the owner lets you touch every yarn, is there to answer all of your questions and is a true sweetheart. They have tons of colors and flavors, and tons of beginners books and even Classes! I ended up buying a bunch of things for my sister's birthday and it still only rang up to 30 bucks which is really inexpensive for a yarn store. Great for beginners and old hats all at the same time. Very cute store. I of course was overwhelmed with the selection they had. I have to say its not as organized as Lion Brand but I feel they more variety. When I walked into the store there was a class going on and I was free to roam around touching every skein and doing what I do best picking it up and putting it back. I must have walked back and forth about 12 times and I finally settled on Mission Falls yarn. The yarn at Knitty City is pretty pricey and if you're a newbe like me its a bit over whelming. But in the end I was able to buy 4 balls of yarn, some tapestry needles with a livingsocial coupon and 20% off mission falls yarn and only have to pay an extra $10. Pretty good deal! One tip for newbes... have an idea of what you want... even if its color because you will spend about an hour walking back and forth touching everything and debating to yourself. read more

So I was wandering along the street en route to the subway and *bam* - yarn shop! Right now I'm giving Knitty City 3 stars as I didn't make a purchase. BUT I have a feeling I'll be updating it with a higher star review in the future. A nice selection of yarns in this little shop - they're really packed in from floor to ceiling. Prices seem reasonable and the staff were quite friendly and helpful (while I didn't need help, one employee was sat with 2 ladies politely explaining the concept of gauge). I took the Beginner Knitting Class (Part I) here. The class cost $30 and materials weren't included. But they recommend starting with a cheaper chunky yarn ($6.50). They also give a 10% discount if you take a class. My instructor, Jane, was really nice, patient, and funny. There were 5 people total in my session. The only thing we were taught was how to cast on, knit stitch & bind off. The 2 hour class, however, wasn't long enough to learn how to fix mistakes, etc... read more

I love this yarn shop!!!!!! All of the employees are friendly and very helpful. You always receive a warm welcome when you step through the door. I actually like the lay out of the store, it' neither big or small, just right. There's enough room to walk around or stand in place to stare at the mesmerizing colors and textures on display, They have a wonderful selection of yarns, books, and accessories. All levels of knitters & crocheters can find comfort there. What I love most is the effort Pearl ( the owner) makes to get to know each customers. It had been some time since I had visited the store and when I was there the other day Janet greeted me by name and she proceeded to ask me about work and my travels, she even remembered what my last project was. Knitters you know we change our projects more than we blink our eyes. Because my profession takes me around the world, I've had the pleasure of visiting many wonderful yarn shops here in the states and in other countries. I would have to say that Knitty City is top on my list for yarn shops in NYC. You know, there is a a lot to be said about great customer service. i won't name any names, but a few other yarn shops could learn a lesson or two from Knitty City. I know this shop is fairly new (maybe a year old), naturally excitement and enthusiasm are driving forces that contribute to the success of the shop. So far, this is my favorite yarn shop in the city. I visited on a weekday afternoon and found a group of knitters in the back, chatting and knitting, along with a helpful, friendly staff, and great selection of yarn at reasonable prices. I felt that it was the best range and depth of stock that I'd seen in the city, though it would be nice to see more gauge swatches/samples. It can be a little hard to navigate between baskets and boxes of yarn in front of the shelves, but honestly, is there such a thing as "too much" yarn? I think not! I had enough time to find one yarn store in the city and went for this one. I was looking for a large selection of Tosh Merino Light, put all my stock in this shop, and luckily found a selection large enough to pick a good color to hopefully map out my 12-color project and start working on it. They have yarn that is pretty well organized--it's in shelves on the wall and in baskets on the floor in front of the wall shelves and cubbies. I noticed Mad Tosh, Malabrigo, Neighborhood Fiber Co., and Sweet Georgia but there were a lot of other great yarns there. The shop is small but not so small you can't move around in it. I think they do a good job of stocking as much as they can without compromising shopping space. People were always nice when we had to stop and let each other pass around choke points in the shop (namely the cash register area). There was a small table in back with knitters, if I'd had time I would've been comfortable sitting down with them and chatting and knitting. read more

To me, this shop is in my personal top three favorite shops in Manhattan for these reasons: 1. Crochet-friendly (plenty of crochet books, hooks, and magazines in stock, plus they always have a few crochet samples worked up and on display so you can see how certain yarns work up); 2. A wonderful variety of yarns in stock and on display, making great use of all possible space--truly a LOT of yarn is jammed into this shop; 3. Their customer service is top notch, great attention to detail, willingness to help wind your yarn on a swift, and great at anticipating your needs or answering questions; 4. Location, location, location! Convenient to get to via the subway or bus, and no stairs to negotiate. The shop is ground floor and has a slight ramp descending into the shop, and while I doubt there is room to negotiate a wheel chair, it's a bit more accessible than other shops nearby. My only complaint? They're closed on Tuesdays:) Truly a wonderful shop! read more

From the moment I walked in and was greeted with a big smile from Devon behind the counter till I left with my yarn and needles, the whole knitty city experience was a joy. The store was quite crowded both with paying customers and regulars sitting around and knitting. The staff was handling the hustle and bustle with calm and good humor, even though they were also setting up for an event later in the evening. I brought in a lacy scarf that developed a gaping hole, discovered while blocking it. They took it and gave it to their knitting surgeon, Lisa. It was repaired by the next night for a very reasonable fee. I am pleased beyond saying. read more

This store is conveniently located on the upper west side right near the 1 train. The store is spacious for a yarn shop, but it is obvious that every available space is used -- smart for a retailer. It is difficult t to set up an uncluttered yarn shop and this shop does that very well. When I came in the door, the shop was fairly crowded and there was a group of women at the back table knitting...it was obvious that they knew each other well. While they were not unfriendly, they were not particularly friendly either. I was surprised that I was not approached by an employee when I entered, nor when I wandered the shop, picking up different yarns and examining them. I sat at the table towards the front of the shop and looked through a few books (they have a fairly extensive selection of books), and no one approached me at all to ask if I needed help. While I like to shop on my own, as a retailer myself, I understand the importance of acknowledging the customer while keeping a distance...and maintaining that fine balance just in case the customer needed help. The owner rang me up, and that was the only time she (or anyone else) spoke with me. She was very polite and told me that I had made a good choice for my book. I also bought a set of needles as well as a ball of yarn (to add to my collection as we knitters know). Their selection was extensive...not cheap, but fairly priced for what it was. Certainly not your standard fare one would find in Michaels or similar stores. read more

Was in town from LA and wanted to check out some local yarn stores and buy some locally dyed yarn. The store was welcoming and inviting with people knitting, crocheting, and chatting away. The selection was great and I loved that the yarn on the wall was categorized and clearly labeled. That said, the disorganized piles of yarn on every table (and even the floor) was disappointing. I had some help from a nice woman who recommended a book on socks, and it turns out she didn't even work there. Very friendly crowd, great selection; a little messy, but worth the trip. read more

This darling family-run store is such a cute throwback to better times... when you could walk into a shop and get immediate, personalized service. I don't even friggin' live here, and each time I've been here, I've walked away skeins heavier and heart lighter. The last time, I had no less than 4 people band together to (successfully) find me a replacement yarn which had initially been purchased more than a year ago. This is my favorite local yarn store. And thankfully it's near my work. There's usually a crowd hanging out inside knitting and talking about all things yarn related. My second fav is Brooklyn General Store, which of course has more space, but less variety. ------------------------- Original review: I've had more luck here than any other NY region yarn store. Though the stock is clearly organized by weight, the shelves are overloaded and messy, but that just adds to browsing fun and enables serendipitous finds. It'd be fun to be there in an earthquake - smothered by soft fluffy wool. Staff are often available to help you with your project. It's nice to see male staff and customers. Like all knitting stores, some of the staff aren't bubbly customer service types, but their knowledge and enthusiasm is far more valuable. Malabrigo is my favorite yarn and they usually have a big variety. Prices are same as most of NYC. read more

They have a great selection, and they're great about answering any of your questions, and not making a beginner like myself feel unwelcome. I'd definitely go back. This store is much larger and open than Purl. They have a larger selection of yarns and more tables for you to sit and work. Even though there were a decent number of people in the store it didn't feel claustrophobic They have very helpful staff who will help you pick out yarn given your constraints (e.g., cost, intended project). 5 stars from the GF. read more

This is an adorable little yarn shop that is packed to the gils with bright, colorful, but expensive yarn. I was on a little weekend getaway and wanted to find something to use for a specific project that I wasn't able to find at home. Going through each little cubby it was hard to find anything under $10/skein or ball. I settled on something in the tiny clearance area in the back, which, while still expensive, was unusual enough for me to justify buying it. The staff was very helpful and assisted me in winding my own yarn (for free - awesome). They were eager to assist other customers and help them pick out the yarn that was right for their projects. read more

I like this place! Big selection of yarn, the staff has always been friendly, lots of books to look at. The downsides are that everyone else likes it too--so it's always packed, and you can't really sit down and look at their books, or take time to examine their yarn. You have to maneuver around the other patrons to even get to the section you are interested in. And you often have to wait a while for your yarn if you want them to put it in a ball for you. Also, a few times they have not rung up yarn that is on sale with the discount (and of course I didn't notice until I got home) or my yarn has had knots in it. read more

Great yarn store! The people who work there are extremely knowledgeable about yarn and the types of yarn you need for specific projects. If you're looking for a substitute yarn for a project, just show them the pattern specifications and they can find something for you that'll work. Also, they're extremely helpful! I once went in right when they were closing. I had dropped a stitch and couldn't pick it back up because it was knitted in garter stitch. Two salespeople, one named Amanda, patiently helped me even though it was after hours. Just so you know, this isn't Michaels where you buy your affordable acrylic yarn. They mostly stock luxury yarn at prices comparable to other stores. read more

Really liked this place. I visited 3 shops this day, and this one was my favorite. The staff was friendly and helpful. One of the women (Pearl--yes the irony is not lost on me) asked if I needed help. I was just looking but I asked her about one of the knitted samples hanging around, and she went out of her way to not only explain it to me in detail, she went to her iPad and sent me the actual pattern. I went here for the first time yesterday, and I can't believe there aren't more reviews on here! Pearl, who owns the place, is positively delightful, as are the two other women who were working there yesterday. The woman who was helping me find the yarn to go with my pattern was super helpful, especially regarding the yardage I'd need to complete my pattern, and even thought to suggest I make the matching mittens in a different, warmer yarn. She helped me find a different yarn in a warmer fiber that was still a close enough color match to the cowl I will be making. There are tons of books, and the store even has a whole database of free patterns to help you with. The customers I encountered were so friendly and wonderful and were giving each other tips on the patterns they were making. The best thing though, is that they roll your skeins into balls FOR FREE. I had to wait a while for mine to be done, but I don't have to spend an hour winding three skeins into balls! Knitty City is everything I was looking for in a yarn store. I will definitely be back, maybe even just to hang around! read more
