I love this place! I have been going there for years, and to be honest, while I have visited other stores in the City, it's the only one I ever shop at. Main reason? Staff is extremely friendly and helpful! It does get hectic at times, but they're always willing to help. A Fun and Friendly Oasis on the Upper West Side I enjoy popping into this local treasure. There is always someone sitting at one of the tables working on a project, or willing to share a few tips. Their yarn selection is impressive, and there are plenty of knowledgable people working at the shop to help with your questions. In addition to the yarn, they have a good selection of notions, books, and accessories. I also enjoy their non-knitting items--like the great selection of whimsical shopping bags and Blue Q socks. Very cute and cozy UWS knitting store. Prices are a little high, but the yarns are all very good quality and there are all kinds of special things you can't find at a generic place like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I really like going into Knitty City. The atmosphere and the selection are what I am always looking for in a yarn store. Knitty City has a large selection of yarns and books, and while it may be a little hard to navigate because of the small size of the store, it's certainly worth the effort. I love the fact that there are tables for you to sit down and work on your projects, peruse their books, and even receive help from the staff. Knitty City also offers classes as well as social knitting nights (there's even one specifically for men!) The only reason this wonderful store gets 4 stars instead of 5 is the size. Because it is so popular, sometimes it is simply impossible to navigate around all of the people crammed into that small space to get to the yarns and books that you want. I purchased yarn to knit a sweater. Then, when I went back to get help, I was told to wait outside. That was fine, except I was ignored. When I asked if she was going to help me, she made a face and continued to ignore me. Finally, I said, " are you going to help me?" She said, " Look it up on YouTube. We don't give help during COVID". There are no signs that say that! She was so rude! I said, " You had no trouble selling it to me during COVID ". So, now I have no idea how to continue with this sweater. I'll NEVER go back there and neither should you! read more

WOW! This place is amazing. I just brought my 10 year old for a knitting lesson with Devin who was such a great kind and inspiring teacher. He was knitting with in minutes of the lesson starting. But the most amazing part of this place was the whole community of knitters who helped him after the lesson was over. We spent a few hours there and I had to drag him out to go to a party. Just when you think there couldn't be a different type of knitting store... Knitty City has a selection of yarns that is colorful, sensuous and unique. I swear, they get colors no one else in the country has. Their range is from a little wooly to rich silks with beads or metallic threads. An entire wall is dedicated to books. (Who knew there were so many books about knitting and crochet??!!) This is my favorite yarn store in NYC. The staff are all very very friendly and very very helpful. I went to Knitty City for the first time to find help with a project that was causing me undue stress. I was helped, even though I hadn't bought the yarn at their store. They have no problem with you coming in and knitting, even if you don't buy anything. 5 for friendliness and helpfulness. Their selection of yarn is amazing. Their have yarn in every different weight, from cobweb lace to super super extra bulky. Their sock yarns are absolutely beautiful. These can be a little expensive, but that also have a section of extremely reasonably priced yarns (that aren't low quality either). They also have 3 or 4 huge bookshelves dedicated to knitting (and crocheting, to a lesser extent). If you're looking for a book published about knitting, there's a good chance that Knitty City has it in stock. Final verdict: Not snob knitters at all. My husband was actually helping me pick out yarn willingly, but I still kind of felt bad for how long I took to look over every skein. ***** GET IN LINE! ***** An employee's response when I told her I was going to post a negative review about the shop. The store has a very limited inventory and with one exception the people there range from unknowledgeable and unhelpful to just plain rude. The second star is for one salesperson, whose name I don't know, who was helpful when I went in the first time and teaching a class when I went in the second time.. The yarn storage is chaotic: some on shelves, some in baskets, most mixed up with other kinds of yarn. The store itself is long and narrow, and awkward to navigate when there are several people there. I asked one employee if there was more of a yarn I was looking at "in the back". She snapped back "NO". After a pause, she went on to tell me that they keep their extra yarn downstairs. Obviously what I wanted to know was if they had more of that yarn in stock and didn't care where it was; equally obviously that salesperson had the need to be nasty, and I met her need. I usually buy my yarn online at Webs (yarn.com) whcih offers a huge selection, an excellent discount policy and superb customer service, or from my local store, which is also terrific but more expensive than Webs. When I travel I like to check out other stores. I know what it's like to be in a well-run shop that treats you well. Knitty City ain't one of them. My recommendation: don't waste your time there. Have been to this store maybe 3 times since I wrote my original review. It's right around the corner from my gym, so I walk by it all the time. I did buy some yarn on one occasion, but I still have the same complaint. The staff do not appear interested in their customers. For example, one time I asked a young man behind the counter a question (he wasn't busy -- just standing there). When the answer was no, they didn't have the yarn I was looking for, instead of coming out from behind the counter to show me some alternatives, he just stood there. So, I left. Won't be going back. Despite the convenience of the location, I can find better prices and service elsewhere. read more

While they have a great selection of yarns it is all very expensive. The staff was very rude and unhelpful. No one greeted me or asked if I needed help during my walk through the store. I came in to redeem two Groupons. I was given a lot of grief about how and when I could use them. The guy behind the counter explained the purpose of the Groupon was to get people to come back. He clearly doesn't understand that being rude to customers will not get them to come back. Finally after he asked the owner I was able to use the Groupons for some yarn and a class. My grandmother taught me to knit when I was a very little girl. As a now empty-nester, I thought it might be nice to take up knitting again and went to into Knitty City earlier this summer to get started. Until today, my experience has been very positive. They have been kind and patient, and answered all of my questions. When I went back today to ask how to transfer onto double pointed needles, I did not have that same experience. A very unfriendly snippy woman "helped" me by mocking my work and telling me that she would teach me how to fix what my Grandmother taught me. No thanks, ma'am. She was a kind and patient teacher, and while her stitching may not have been perfect, her heart was in the right place. Were she still alive, she could certainly teach you a few things. read more

Probably the best yarn store in the city... If you go in frequently, they'll come to know you, but even if you don't, it is always a pleasant place to shop. Like anywhere in NYC, it can get crowded (I never understand why people who live here complain about crowds. duh.) and maybe that means you wait a few minutes to find a person to help you... Personally, i like to be left alone to touch everything (its a yarn store - why would you not???) until i seek help out... If you don't like crowds, you probably should try to visit on weekdays rather than weekends.. everywhere is more crowded on the weekends.. Like any established LYS, it can be a bit chaotic, however, I'd rather they put everything they have out rather than wait until they can find the perfect space on a shelf... or make me ask for it.. I want to know what my options are! In addition, sample products are hung near the yarn so you can see what the yarn looks like once it's been worked... (I don't understand any knitter/crocheter who wouldnt want to see samples of the finished product, so the complains confuse me to no end...) They have sales people active on ravelry.com, so if you are curious as to whether they have a specific yarn/tool/book, you can always send them a message and they get back to you as soon as they can... Great for those of us who might not live 5 blocks away anymore ( sad :( ) The prices range from budget-friendly to luxury and they never make you feel badly if you are there for the acrylic or just one button (as opposed to some of their competitors who have made me feel very, very small...) Great selection, friendly helpful staff, will patiently wind all your yarn, I really like coming here. Also, this store is guy-friendly - the staff informed me that "Wensday is Mensday" (6-8 pm) - someday I'll come check that out. My knitting habits are pretty eccentric - I like to knit sweaters using multiple colors of yarn and the biggest needles I can find (size 35 or 50) so the sweater comes out consisting of mostly holes. It is more the idea of a sweater than an actual sweater. When the staff asked me what kind of project I was planning, I explained all this, and rather than rolling their eyes (which is a response I've gotten in other yarn stores) they said that sounded great, and showed me some yarns that were just right (Malabrigos merino in 3 different colorways) - and then asked me to come back and show them the sweater when it's done. Knitty City is a solid store with a wide selection of yarns. However, the store is often very cluttered and difficult to move around in. Despite having a large staff, there are often books piled up on tables, or yarns all thrown together in boxes on the floor. If you know exactly what you want, it's a great shop, but for browsing, I often feel like I'm just in the way. The selection, like I said, is wide, but feels a little disorganized. I find it a bit difficult to find what I am looking for. While some yarns, like sock yarn or plant fibers, are grouped together, other yarns don't seem to have a "place." Also despite having many employees, the last two or three times I've gone into Knitty City no one has said hello, or welcomed me in any way, or asked if I needed help finding anything. I like the shop, but I don't love it. I'll go if I know they have something I can't get elsewhere, but lately that has been less and less frequently. read more

I like this store but it's not very memorable, they have kind of a random selection that doesn't always seem to go together. They carry some brands that are hard to find in NY, like Lorna's Laces and Sheep Shop, and they sell cute accessories like buttons and bags, which is what keeps me shopping there. I called to ask if they carried a particular yarn in a specific color. The woman who answered the phone sounded so rushed. Her tone was of impatience and intolerance, rushing me through that I forgot what else I wanted to ask her for. I called back the next day, and asked again about the same yarn hoping to have a different interaction (how about respectful). She said: "And as I told you yesterday, we only have it in..." xyz colors. Well, the day before she rushed so quickly through the colors that I forgot. Wow! I was shocked because I have been a fairly regular customer, and overlooked the terse and harried tones throughout the years, but this interaction was so rude that I never want to go back. Sad, because I have supported this shop; recommended it to friends. All service starts over the phone! You need to be respectful to everyone at all times. I called several yarn stores yesterday looking for this yarn, and I was treated in a respectful and friendly manner. What a pleasure to speak to much healthier people; it erased the nasty experience I had with Knitty City. They have lost my business, and I will let my friends know of this experience too. read more

Super helpful, knowledgeable and friendly staff all five visits. Their genuine patience is perfect for beginners with lots of questions. Cute, cozy family store, great yarn selection, and they have pretty wool roving and felting supplies when I went in the first time. I picked up some jasmine scented wool wash recently and extra large gauge circulars. Great place to stop by after an outing at the AMNH. Haven't taken any classes yet, but love that they offer a men's night and have a well stocked bookshelf. read more

I initially went here for their beginner Knitting lessons and I loved the store. My instructor was wonderful (Maxine), patient and helped me a lot in the 2 classes I took. However, after being a knitter nearly 2 years now and almost exclusively coming to Knitty City for yarn and supplies, I will now never return. On multiple, multiple occasions, I have been treated as though they were too busy to either help with yarn or worse, spin my yarn for me. The owner, especially is a culprit of this. A few months ago, I ordered yarn from them and was told they'd call me when it came in. One month later (and 3 follow-ups with THEM) I find out that they would not be getting the yarn. That's wonderful, perhaps a phone call, as promised, would have helped me. I have given them multiple chances because it was an easily accessible store but I'll never return after my last visit. From now on Purl SoHo and Downtown Yarns in the LES have my business. I'm in Purl several times a week and they are nothing short of delightful. read more

As a newbie knitter, I found this store very enchanting. The yarn is gorgeous, more expensive than what you would pay at Michael's but clearly a higher quality too. The staff is very warm and helpful. If it takes a while to catch an employee's attention, it is probably because they are so intently focused on helping whichever customer they are with at the time. i went to knitty city on saturday to get help with a project i had started before the covid shutdown. i had to stop the project because i needed help with learning how to do one row buttonholes. while i was there i also wanted to return one skein of yarn that i purchased for this project. the salesperson who helped me suggested that i buy the extra skein in case i may need it, and that if i did not i could return it for a store credit. as the sweater progressed i realized that i did not need the extra skein of yarn. i was going to go to the store and get a credit for it, but unfortunately, the covid shut down happened with in a few days of my planning on going there. when i l recently looked on the knitty city website i saw that the store was reopened and decided i would go over and finally get help with the project and ask for a credit for the one skein of yarn i wasn't using. when i mentioned this to the salesperson she told me that she would have to ask zach. i also told her that i would like her to order 4 skeins of the same yarn as i was planning on doing the same sweater as a gift for another person. she came back and told me that zach would not allow me to return the yarn as promised before the covid shutdown because the yarn could be contaminated with the virus. i found that statement ridiculous, as i have never heard that the virus could linger on wool or any other fabrics for a long time. if that was the case, i would think that there would be many more people who caught the virus if it was lingering on their clothing. she told me i should discuss it with zach, so i went to the counter and asked him if he would please (as promised before the shutdown), give me a credit for the yarn. he refused. i then told him to cancel my special order for the yarn in a different color. if he had been reasonable and thought this through, he would have realized that i wanted to order 4 more skeins of yarn, and that by doing what the store had committed to, he still would have made a sale for the purchase of the 3 remaining skeins. i realize that knitty city like most small businesses was hurt by the covid shutdown. i went back to the store with the purpose of not only getting help with the project, but to order more yarn in order to support a small business in my neighborhood. knitty city did not post anything on their website about not taking yarn back post the shutdown, nor did i see a sign anywhere in the store making mention of the new policy. if that was a new policy they should have posted and made all customers aware of this change. i am an avid knitter and would have continued going there to buy more yarn and supplies in order to continue supporting a neighborhood business. but, since this incident, i will never go back to this store. perhaps the management should reconsider their post covid return policy. if they had a policy of returning yarn for credit, they needed to live up to it, or at the very least put that info out on the website and in their store. read more

Knitty City is a favorite of one of my friends, and when we went on a yarn crawl - you know, like a bar crawl, except you stop at a zillion craft stores instead of a zillion pubs? Oh? We're the only ones who do that? Hm. - we ended here. I loved the selection of yarns, many of which were from brands I can't find in my local yarn shop. Unfortunately, the place loses a star because of the atmosphere. The staff was polite, but a little cold; the women knitting at the table in the back all seemed to know each other and the workers very well, and the shop had a kind of clique-y atmosphere. I was also disappointed by the fact that *nothing* here seems to cost less than $15, $10 at best. Still, I ended up buying a fantastic skein of a wool/merino blend from Lorna's Laces, which is a brand I have trouble finding at home, so I left mostly content. read more

Very cozy yarn shop on the UWS. Every time I've been the staff is friendly. It gets busy and very crowded so it can be hard to walk around but that happens everywhere! The staff isn't pushy at all and is very helpful. The prices are a tad higher than you would find if you bought the same yarn online or at a shop outside of the city, but you're paying for the location. I'm happy to pay an extra $1 or $2 per skein to have shops like this around. read more

I had the most unpleasant experience at this store. I paid for a private lesson with a woman who may have been the owner. I mentioned to her during the course of my lesson that I wanted to knit a sweater for my dog; that was the purpose of my having signed up for the lesson. I told her my dog had cancer and I wanted to do something special for her to help her through the winter. The woman didn't bat an eye; it was as if she hadn't heard me. She was so cold. I visited this store after experiencing poor results (advice and friendliness wise) from Knit and Stitch (awful - read review) & School products (awful customer service but wonderful yarn - read review). So I was hoping this store would improve the previous poor reviews. There appeared to be 4-5 older women who looked like they worked in the store but they basically ignored me until after 10mins I had had enough and approached one of the workers located at the counter. After all that they didn't have the yarn but did recommend school products. So yeah, overall again not a positive experience. read more

I'm in love. Went in looking for a particular skein in a particular size and color to finish a project. All the shelves are labeled and organized by brand and size so I found it within five minutes of walking in. It was the same exact price as it is online (not including shipping) and because of a sale, ended up being actually cheaper. Imagine that for a New York yarn store. So I only spent like $7 here so far but the owner was really sweet while checking me out, not at all bothered that I barely spent any money. She also gave me one of their knitty city tote bags since it was my first time there. While I was waiting for my yarn to be wound, I asked another lady there if they had the pattern for a sample they had hanging on the wall. It was an old one so they didn't, but she exactly what magazine I could find it in and even tried looking on ravelry for me to see if it was posted there. Also asked Pearl if they had any classes going on. She said only beginner classes currently and asked what I was looking for. Told her I wanted to learn how to adjust patterns based on measurements and she said they'd be happy to do a private lesson to help me with that for $50/hr. Really reasonable prices from all the yarn stores I've been to. She also said they'd be starting more classes in September. read more
