I can't possibly say enough good things about Steve & Knock on Wood Cabinetry! We had been left high and dry by a General Contractor who had promised to build us a linen closet and broom closet, and near the end of our home remodel project, failed to deliver. Fortunately Steve jumped in, built the cabinets the first weekend after he measured for them (which was within days of contacting him), and worked with us to schedule the install at the perfect time (after floors were finished, before baseboard was installed.) Bonus: his price was very fair, and less than the GC would have charged us! It was actually lucky that the GC failed us, because we got a better quality product for a lower cost. The cabinets are beautiful. How well did the cabinetry match our home? My mom had been looking at our house through every stage of the remodel. I am so impressed with Steve's final work product - a beautiful top quality, wall-long, built-in cabinet that included adjustable bookshelves in the middle, closed cabinets on the bottom and a top frame to put artwork and sculpture. The open side of the cabinet end is curved with lovely molding. It adds such an eye-catching visual. Steve allowed me to help with the design (as I did have a vision) and added his professional opinion about why something might or might not work. I so appreciated his guidance and calmness in the process. Steve did what he said he would to do, when he said he would do it. So here's the deal. You might have better luck than we did with this guy, but my guess is that's he's screwed more people than yelp illustrates, given all of the problems we had with him. I really wanted to like him, refer him to friends and rave about his work, but I just can't. Here's the litany of issues we encountered. The overview: He's very shwarmy, and feels like a used car salesmen. Attentive in the beginning until you sign the 'contract', he gets your deposit and then he disappears and lies, and tries to extort you for money in the end. I also expected a custom cabinet maker to come with some cool design elements (slide out spice racks, utensil holders, you know cool ideas). Nope, you get a very basic kitchen here unless you provide the ideas, but I expected more 'custom' for the cost. The saga: Our initial proposal included an entire kitchen with an island, three furniture pieces in the dinning area and three bathroom vanities. The day after we gave him the deposit I inquired about one of the pieces, checking a design element and wanting to make sure the seat depth was enough to add a back cushion, as I'd just found out he wasn't building a back. He said he couldn't make any changes because it was already built. I asked him to show pictures of his work, because I was in complete disbelief that it was so far along after 24 hours, that it was unfixable. He sent me a pic of two square sticks (this was a bench/nook) and I suggested a solution that fixed the issue as, there was an obvious solution given how far along he wasn't. Then, as the kitchen pieces were being built, I let him know we were going to need to cancel the bathroom vanities and Steve started pulling some sketchy crap saying he'd already built them and referring to this 'contract'. He was now refusing to show us his work or the 'contract'. At the close of the project he tried to charge us $1000 for "extra pieces" that weren't in the "contract", despite still refusing to give us a copy of he contract. We called his bluff and refused to give him the last check without the contract, which he finally provided. The 'contract' was a list of materials and specs i.e. Will use Blume soft close hinges and have a xyz revel etc! Not a list of pieces that he was making and their cost, but a list of materials! No where did he list the pieces he was making and their cost to make. So sketch, as he ultimately could say or charge you for anything he wanted based on this 'contract' he kept holding us too. Even if I give him the benefit of the doubt, and he needed to charge us more for a piece based modification, in no way is it good business to say nothing for months and then upon final bill tack on an extra $1000, referring to some bogus contract as your evidence to support the charge. Other issues we encountered: -There were items promised in the proposal that were never completed i.e. Dividers above the oven cabinet, a false back in the over top fridge cabinet. -The buffet he built was too tall making us have to compromise on a 3/4 inch top with barely a 1 inch false front instead of a 1+ inch top like we discussed and our window had to be fixed to accommodate the piece. -Despite being given the manuals for all appliances and installation guides, the island drawers were built too deep for the downdraft. Additionally the island drawers were made even deeper, leaving a gap between the downdraft and the range top.  -Per the installation guides, he needed to build a box for the range and refused, saying he was just going to toss in two by fours, as a sub par fix. He did fix it when we refused to pay him until the work was complete. -He refused to drill for pulls despite agreeing to. -He installed/threw the floating shelves up on the wall, uneven and ignoring an installation request. We should have withheld the last check until he fixed them, but after all this, we paid him and told him to never set foot in our home again. The overall craftsmanship and the painted finish are good, however his business model (refusing to provide the signed contract even though asked numerous times) and his lack of attention to detail caused us great conflict and undo stress in an already stressful project. So, if you are thinking of hiring him and paying anything him anything over a few thousand for your project, please contact me and I'll send you supporting documents to the above issues we had. We just moved to Windsor and found that the house we bought needed a kitchen remodel. I have built cabinets for previous homes but without a shop, I needed to get some way to get cabinets etc. We visited Lowes, Home Depot and other cabinet sales stores and found their cabinets were expensive and the quality of the cabinets were not to my standards. Knock On Wood was recommended to us and we were told we would not be disappointed. Steve the owner has a large shop with many computer controlled pieces of equipment. His cabinets are fabricated to close tolerances glued and clamped for lasting quality. Steve the owner is involved with every facet of the operation and he is a stickler for details. It all started when Steve came to our house and measured our kitchen and spent several hours discussing the design. He gave my wife several suggestions that worked for her and he left with a plan for the cabinets. He returned in a couple of days for a review and we agreed to the design. In a couple of weeks, the cabinets were ready for finishing. The quality of the work is meticulous. The materials used are far better than the cabinet store units. We have cabinets made with ¾ inch plywood and the drawers are made with imported 9 ply plywood (as I requested) and assembled with the quality hardware you fine in the premium cabinets. He was involved with the finishing cabinets using an associate that has 30 years of experience in refinishing. Steve installed the cabinets and check the installation with a laser. We now have the cabinets installed and they look great. We are both very happy with Steve, the building process and the completed cabinets. We definitely recommend Knock On Wood for cabinets read more
