I was very stuffed by the end of the evening. I liked both dishes. I think Ko Fusion needs to focus on one cuisine. It's trying to be everything to everyone. But what I had was tasty. I didn't love it. I wanted to. I skipped lunch as we drove down to Champaign from Madison for a research meeting. Be aware of the other Kofusion located in Urbana, just minutes away! The intense blue lighting outside made the place memorable for people in our group who were coming back to Kofusion for the second time. They couldn't remember the name, but they remembered the blue lighting as you walk to up to the restaurant. The fish in the aquarium looked a little sad. Perhaps... they were traumatized by the fact that this place serves sushi. eh eh (remark credit goes to another person in our group). The overall decor was pleasant though, a decent spot for a date or business meeting. Our server was really nice, but my food was just so-so. I got stir fry with rice and shrimp. The shrimp started to freak me out because they were luke warm at best. I think this was an issue because we had a group on the larger end (9 people). The portion size was good, and the stir fry had a good flavor, but for the price, I didn't think my money was really well spent. There was the option for private room if that's something of interest to you. We've eaten here several times and the food is always wonderful. I want to mention the outstanding service, though. We came with a party of six yesterday. I called in our reservation about an hour and a half before we arrived and spoke with Jake. Our party included my son, who is autistic and non-verbal. He has occasional outbursts and it's often necessary for us to put him in a position of being able to control him. Jake was completely understanding, and prepped the perfect table for us. This is my husband's favorite place to eat in Champaign. The location is super fun, downtown near a lot of places to grab a drink before dinner (Collective pour and Barrel House are some faves). I would compare each sashimi to the size of my pinky finger, and my pinky finger is still larger than these pieces. The quality is very low as well; I understand that most sushi places freeze their fish and then thaw it completely before serving it to their customers, but the centers of the sashimi were still frozen. My family has been in the sushi business for over 20 years; and this place brings shame to the sushi business community. (See my pictures as reference) I also ordered the dragon roll. One star is generous (but, cliche as it is to say, there's no option to give it zero stars). The quality place we always go to wasn't answering, so we figured we'd take a chance and try another supposedly quality place. Wow! We moved here a year ago from NYC. My wife is a sushi addict, and never in her life has she been unable to finish a roll (whether from NYC dives or higher end restaurants like Nobu). Well she tolerated one roll and couldn't stomach eating more than a couple pieces of the other type of roll. Her mother was so hungry she ate hers, but for the first time ever said she found her sushi disgusting. I was in the same boat as my mother-in-law. The food was bland, ingredients were poor quality, and the food was poorly prepared. Meanwhile, they way overcharged and screwed up the order as well. There are so much better places in town, including our go to spot. I think most patrons of Kofusion are swayed by their ridiculous marketing and their large prime location space. Absolutely nobody who is a regular actually understands what good sushi is. I won't even bother sharing the name of our go to spot, but the point is there are places with way better ingredients, better chefs, and better staff (especially as pertains to accuracy of order), and all for the same or cheaper prices. I've been going to Ko Fusion for many years, and while the new location has a wonderful ambiance and is one of C-U's limited options for (almost) fine dining, the food is usually just above mediocre and the service fluctuates. My last service experience there went from very nice to frustrating to deeply insulting. The hostess (and either owner or FOH manager, I'm guessing) greeted us kindly, led us to our table outside, and wished us a lovely meal. It was a summer weekend evening so it was packed and our order was taking longer than typical. My friend and I were enjoying our drinks and conversation and never bugged our server about the wait, but then noticed an order that looked a lot like ours being brought to a table of patrons who had arrived after us. We patiently watched the food be served to them and were good-natured when that table's order was brought to us about 10 mins later. We helped the runner understand what had happened and asked if we could have something comped for the mix-up; especially because we would now have to wait longer for our correct order. They said they'd talk to our server and instructed us to do so as well. Our server offered the option of a free dessert to share or seeing if something could be comped. My friend and I are both watching our sugar intake so we declined the dessert. Before our correct order came, we watched 3-4 tables that were seated after us receive their food. This meant that our ticket was not moved up, as is typically the case for a messed up order. I worked in restaurants for almost a decade and if the kitchen messed up a ticket, it became priority- and if a server screwed up, they'd get a manager to move the ticket up. Clearly, neither happened with our ticket. At the end of the meal, we asked again about the possibility of something being comped and a few minutes later, the hostess/manager came barreling over to our table and actually began fussing at us. She told us we already got something free and something about how we want more and can't we see how busy they are. We were confused because we had declined the dessert and weren't aware of any free items. It may be that the server told her that they'd offered the dessert and she thought we'd accepted that and also wanted something comped- but rather than clarify what was being requesting and explain what they could or couldn't do for us, she spoke to us like children or like people just trying to get something for free. As Black women who have experienced this more times than we could count (others being served before us and being chastised for expecting good service), we quickly said "forget it" and let her know we didn't appreciate how she was speaking to us. I also let her know that I wouldn't be returning (after 8 yrs of patronage) and that I'd redirect my department's business dinners in the future. This particular situation may not have been racial, but because it looked and felt like so many situations we have experienced that unquestionably were, we left pretty angry and demoralized. I've been to Kofusion several times. The interior is very modern and sleek. The entrees are pricey and portions are on the smaller side. The servers are friendly and attentive. The $1 sushi deals on Sundays and Mondays are worth it. My favorite is definitely the big roll; I believe it has egg, crabmeat, avocado and some other stuff, then tempura fried with some sort of sauce on top. The best deal...and I'm kinda mad that I found out right before I graduated...is the lunch buffet! It's sucha great deal. Only weekdays though. The buffet is only around $10 and includes various entrees, such as curry chicken, fried fish croquettes, kimchi, soup, fried rice, noodles and three different types of sushi. I have been going to Ko Fusion for about 3 years and probably won't stop anytime soon! Ko fusion has many different types of rolls, house rolls and classic rolls. The house rolls are more of Ko Fusion's specialty rolls; they are more expensive, but I think it is worth it. Classic rolls are around $8 and house rolls are around $13-$15. They also have nigiri, but I don't like eating raw fish, so I haven't tried theirs. Hands down my favorite roll is the flaming phoenix. It is a masterpiece from start to finish. It come out flaming (just like the name says) and has many different elements of flavor to it. The $1 sushi is Sunday and Monday. I would suggest trying the sampler if you are not familiar with their different kinds of rolls. After coming here many times, I know which ones I do and don't like. Just read the descriptions and you will be fine picking your sushi. GO TO THE LUNCH BUFFET. They only serve 2-3 types of sushi, but you can stock up that day and get your fill. They also have doughnuts, spicy chicken, edamame , rice, and salad. The outdoor seating is relaxing and has a good vibe. Just like any other restaurant, it is not preferable to sit outside when it is hot and humid. The space inside is cool and dark. It can get loud sometimes because the tables are close together. I also enjoy their different types of tea. They switch out their tea selections frequently. It comes in a smaller sized pot, but the leaves are good for about 2-3 steepings. Overall, I think Kofusion is a good spot for some solid sushi. It's great for birthdays and small gatherings. My only wish is that the price were a little cheaper so that we might order more often. The sushi, for instance, is tastier than at other local sushi places, but it costs twice as much. I had a very strange experience here. The service was HORRIBLE. We would have 3/4 of our drink left and the waitress would come with a new cup and switch out the almost full one for a new one. It was super wasteful and ANNOYING because this would happen every couple minutes. Kofusion gets a massive amount of hype around Champaign. Probably because it's the only nice / higher-end sushi place. Kofusion does have other entree dishes besides sushi as well, but you're really going for the sushi. Which, I have to say, very good. The rolls are definitely ample. 2 Rolls was sufficient for 2 people for dinner. We had the red dragon roll and the dragon roll. Both had good amounts of fish and eel. The red dragon was especially great with the sriracha on top and the additional fish in the roll. Loved the flavor, didn't even use wasabi/soy for the red dragon half the time. Also, both rolls came on plates with a fair amount of extra eel sauce. So many places cut back on the eel sauce for no real reason, but it's fantastic and I loved wiping up the extra sauce. Not bad, but I probably would not want to pay full price for them. We each had a sushi roll. I had the fusion and she had the torched salmon. I also ordered two pieces of the nigiri which were on special, one was a red tuna and the other a yellowtail. They were both good but the red was the better of the two. Not bad for only $2 each, but they weren't the biggest pieces of nigiri I've had. The fusion roll was delicious. It had a nice crispy potato crunch on the outside and it was well-rolled and I could taste most of the ingredients quite well. My date said she like the torched salmon. I was a little disappointed to see that Ko Fusion does not include pickled ginger with their sushi rolls like most other sushi places do. I think our server's name was Sarah. She was nice and very helpful. Service was good! My only gripe with Ko Fusion was the price. After tax and tip, our meal and discounted drinks were over $50. I know sushi is not usually a huge portion, but my roll was only 8 pieces or so, I definitely wasn't full after it. It took a few minutes even to get to the hostess, who said there was a long wait (the place was packed), but I could sit at the bar immediately. She responded in the affirmative when I asked if I could order from the same menu. So sit at the bar I did. For the uninitiated, the 'dollar sushi' is per PIECE, not per ROLL. So, calculate accordingly. However, these are not your regular old California rolls, or good ole spicy tuna, salmon skin roll, etc. These are fancier and more intricate rolls, and priced rather low. Parking is a problem here as with anywhere near the university. There was a sign on the door saying they validate 2 hour parking for a parking lot, but since I didn't know that, didn't know where the lot was, and had already fed the meter on the street, I didn't think anything of it.
