Ventured out to the suburbs to check this spot this out. I kept reading reviews of how good this place is, they say the best Thai! They start you off with some edamame; nice while you're waiting. Sauces are a nice pairing. We ordered the Tom kha and kanom jeeb. The soup was okay, I keep trying to find the same soup we had from other spot but sadly nothing comes close to that one. The dumplings were very good! Lots of meat in and on them. I ordered the pad Thai, the noodles were amazing! Sometimes they come out dry but this was spot on. Flavor was great, couldn't stop eating it! My husband got the crispy duck because a lot of reviews rave about it. He loved it! Said the flavor was amazing, duck was delicious, sauce was unique. It's so rare that I don't like a Thai restaurant but this one definitely let me down. I wanted to try this place because it was close to where we were one Saturday evening. But the place was pretty empty, and I think I can understand why. The food here in my opinion is below average. I ordered a medium spice level Drunken Noodles with Chicken but I swear this was Extra Spicy--this is coming from a person that has a pretty high spice tolerance. Not only that, but it had a very tangy flavor to it as well. I've never had drunken noodles be this tangy. It did not taste right at all. This is one of my go to Thai dishes that I have ordered at many many restaurants. My husband got the Kob Kun Fried Rice. His dish was okay, but sort of strange. They kind of just plopped some crab on top (see pic) and didn't actually mix it into the fried rice. The crab they put on top was kind of cold, while the rest of the dish was hot. I thought that was odd. Even then it was better than my dish. So my husband, who has an higher spice tolerance than me, offered to swap dishes with me but even he could not handle it. It was spicy in a truly unenjoyable way. This sucks because I ordered a medium and they did not take that into account at all when making it. I had to do what I very rarely do--I asked if I could kindly send the dish back and I explained my issue. They were nice enough to let me order something different. I got the green curry with chicken. Sad thing is I got this mild in an effort to not have the spice issue again. However this time, my curry was completely sweet. Located in a small strip mall in Oakton, VA next to a Hair Cuttery, Japanese Restaurant and Chipotle, is this cute Thai restaurant. With light jazz music playing in the background, this restaurant is lined with wood floors, walls, booths, tables, chairs and a bar. As we sat down, we were greeted with glasses of water along with a plate of boiled pods of edamame beans along with a sauce plate of sriracha & sweet soy sauce. Yummy. A sign of a good Thai restaurant is their Drunken Noodle & Thai Fried rice. We ordered the Chicken Drunken Noodle medium spicy & Thai Crabmeat fried rice. Let's see if it has wok hei? After 15 mins, our food arrived. The portions for both plates were above average. First the crabmeat fried rice. See the picture. Very colorful. There were large lumps of crabmeat as well as flakes/strands throughout the fried rice. I smell some wok hei. There was a side of spicy Thai lime juice sauce. It was good but odd that it came with the rice. The fried rice was very crabby in flavor and smell. But the taste was missing a little more salt. Here is were you order the Spice Tray. Throw some fish sauce with red Thai chilis. Or, what I did was mix some sweet soy sauce to elevate the flavor profile. Salty and sweet with the fried rice. The star of the show was the Chicken Drunken Noodle. So many flavors of spicy, sweet, salty & herby from the basil. Add some vinegar & chilis along with fish sauce & chilis to give the sour & umami flavors. The noodles were very soft and piping hot, even after 10 mins. Some wok hei too! This is probably one of the best Drunken Noodles in the area. Even my son said it was full of flavor & best he has ever had. Service was good. Our glasses of water were refilled multiple times. Love this local spot! I have ordered a few times, and the service is always great. The restaurant is a little small, but I've never had an issue with wait times. They give complimentary edamame whether you sit in or do takeout, which is cool! I love the Chicken Pad Thai here, very flavorful. The Chicken Drunken Noodles taste good too, and the noodles are very chewy in a great way. The Chicken Red Curry is great, and the amount of veggies they include in it makes it more filling for sure. The chicken in all the dishes is cooked perfectly and does not taste dry at all which I've experienced at other places. Went there Friday night . Decent place not too crowded. They give you free soya beans with sauce . I liked it . Especially their yellow sauce. We ordered Fried cod fillet. It came with brown rice and side vegetables. I would suggest the chef to fry their fresh basil and then fry the fish . It would taste better . Vegetables were plain boiled didn't like it . Consistently tasty Thai food. I ordered pickup from this restaurant several times while visiting the area for a few months.

My girlfriend and I went here on a Sunday evening for dinner. It's a nicely decorated, clean place. I ordered the duck curry and she got the drunken noodles with shrimp, and we got the kanom jeeb appetizer to share. We were also served complimentary edamame. I enjoyed the appetizer and my entree; they were flavorful, but not anything that separated themselves from other Thai places we've tried. However, my girlfriend was initially served a dish from another table. The mixup was quickly corrected, but when she received her drunken noodles, it contained the wrong protein; chicken instead of shrimp. We were a bit short on time and she also enjoys chicken, so we did not request that the dish be remade or anything. She did say that she enjoyed the entree as well. However, this definitely calls into question the quality of service for me. I understand that mixups happen, but two rather major ones like that in one night is concerning. It didn't affect our experience too negatively, but a guest with allergies or other dietary restrictions may not be so lucky. When I received the check, it said shrimp drunken noodles, so it's not like our waiter misheard us when we placed our order or anything. I hope that this was just an outlier, but I can't recommend Kob Kun based on this experience. read more

Came here for lunch midweek. I arrived right when they opened at 11dep-' and the place was empty. Loved the big booth and we could talk easily. Service was good. They greet you with some edamame which curbed my hunger while I waited for my friend to arrive. I got the corn cakes based on the recommendation of Yelp and I was not led astray! They were delicious. This place is our regular go to, week night / weekend when we don't want to anywhere or cook! Kob Kun is very consistent and deliver. The drunken fried rice and noodle are always on point. Additionally, the pad krapow is awesome, just be careful not to get it too spicy. Personally, I've never eaten there so I cannot comment on the ambiance, however, to date the service has been on point. Why the 4 stars and not 5? Well, 5 starts are for perfection every time, and while on point on most things, a few small things need to be worked out such as giving a real sense of when the food will be ready. Hands down, the best Thai restaurant in the Vienna/Oakton/Tysons area. We will not go anywhere else for Panang curried dishes. The servings are elegant, ample and delicious, no matter what is ordered. The atmosphere is above average, and the service is gracious and efficient. The food is consistently perfect. Terrible customer service.. I placed a takeout order and was told that the food will be ready in 25-35 minutes. When my mom went to pick up the food for us, they haven't even started making the orders. My mom had to wait 30 extra minutes.. and the worst part is, the hostess or the lady working was not apologetic or considerate at all. She had a really bad attitude and did not even acknowledge my mom when my mom asked when the food will be ready. We will not be returning to this restaurant. It's a shame that their workers don't have basic respect and courtesy for customers. They should have either given a heads up that the orders are backed up or genuinely apologize when customers have to wait that long for pick up. First of all, I had a great impression when I went there and I had a tremendous welcoming, I ordered my favorite dish, Crispy Duck. The test of Crispy Duck was way better than anywhere else. Lunch order of pad thai. 2 stars because it looked great, but the spice level made it inedible for me. I get it that spice levels can vary, but I go with medium based on experience from other restaurants in the area (e.g. Lucky Thai in Falls Church). I told the waitress that I couldn't eat it and asked if I could get another order. She just laughed and said "next time order mild, you can't handle it!" My family and I have lived in Oakton or Vienna for the past 16 years - we were thrilled when Kob Kun came, and we ate in the restaurant it's opening weekend 12 or so years ago. It was the most authentic and delicious Thai food we'd ever had in northern Virginia (we are now very lucky to have Elephant Jumps in Fairfax and Chang Mai in McLean as well). My family and I would frequent the restaurant, I would take coworkers there for lunch, and as the years went on we still order takeout from here at least once a month. I've watched as the prices have steadily increased, and the quality fluctuated from time to time - but we always came back because overall we love the food. It is frustrating that as a pretty regular customer for over a decade that no one in the restaurant has taken the care to know or even recognize anyone from my family, but I'm not entitled to that so it's not a big deal - just would be nice if they made the effort. The reason for the 3 star review is specifically because of my experience last night. It was Valentine's Day and the place was packed. We knew ordering takeout at 6:30pm was going to take longer than usual - the website said 65 minutes. I've been going here long enough to know that it really means 75 minutes. I show up at the restaurant at 7:40 - was told by one of the servers that my order should be ready in 5-10 minutes. I waited by the bar for 5 minutes, but the place was super hot - must've been 80 degrees, so I waited for 10 minutes outside. I came back in at 7:55, checked on my order with the other server, who told me she couldn't find my order in her system. I became visibly frustrated. She finally found the order, went back to the kitchen, and came back out saying it would be another 10 minutes or so. I told her I ordered at 6:30, and was told it would take 10 minutes nearly 20 minutes ago. She gave me the stink eye and just said "it's not ready" as she walked away. I finally got the food at 8:15. They apologized and said they threw in something extra. When I got home they gave us an extra order of spring rolls and an order of fried rice. But they forgot the white rice for the curries. The food was all outstanding. Like the best it's been in years - everything was delicious (red curry with chicken, suki stir fry with tofu, street style grilled pork, curry puffs, spring rolls - everything was amazing). So the purpose of this compliant is to ask the restaurant to please update your website to reflect accurate wait times. If it says 65 minutes, it shouldn't take nearly 2 hours (takeout should never take nearly 2 hours period, so maybe there is some opportunity to manage the kitchen more effectively as well). And if you do make a customer wait that long - taking something off the bill is usually customary. We will continue to frequent Kob Kun, but hopefully they will improve their website to reflect accurate pick up times. read more

Good service and relaxing location for dinner! I was nearby and looking to try someplace new, saw this restaurant had some cute outdoor tables under a balcony and good ratings, giving it a try! They had signs up that they had recently reopened indoor dining but it was a nice day so I requested an outdoor table. The hostess brought out a decorative glass bottle for table water and a water glass and asked if I needed a menu. They had some menus outside and sanitizer and Clorox wipes for folks that wanted them, I was looking at a menu from their website too, which had lots of pictures. The server brought me a nice edamame appetizer with a brown chili paste sauce a s a spicy red paste - both tangy and fun, had not had them with edamame before. I wasn't sure what I wanted and was feeling like soup, the server answered some questions about the options and I got the Tom Ka, with a choice of many proteins, I picked seafood. This included some shrimp, fish fillets, mussels, and squid. Very tasty and spicy, recommended! I would like to try more stuff next time! Wow might be my new favorite Thai place in the area! We ordered tom yum soup, spring rolls, pad see ew, and pad thai. OK, and also mango sticky rice bc we can never resist. Tom yum soup - So refreshing! You can taste the lime juice and the lemongrass. Spring rolls - We ordered it with chicken, and it came with the sweet chili sauce on the side. Wish there were more than just 3 small pieces, but still tasty. And no regrets getting it. Pad see ew and pad thai - Legit. I say that because by the time I got home 15 minutes later, the noodles did not dry out. Extra saucy, which was great. Generous serving of vegetables. Flavor country. The mango sticky rice was bomb as usual, and they served it with some strawberries and pomegranate seeds as well. My favorite part of this pick up order was the packaging. The entrees came in compostable containers (yes!!!! wish more restaurants did this), and the sauces and even the peanuts for the pad thai were served in mini containers. Sure that's not super eco friendly, but I understand restaurants can't go completely zero waste here unfortunately. Would def make the 15 min drive to get take out here again. Nice little Thai eatery on the corner of a strip mall in Oakton, VA. The ambiance here is modern and clean, with food presentation to match. The food itself is quite delicious. Fried items are nice and crispy. Lots of vegetables and color in their dishes. Sometimes a bit much sauce and sweetness, but the flavors are otherwise very close to authentic. I really enjoyed the crispy duck with basil. It had more vegetables than commonly found at other establishments, but I really appreciated that because they were cooked nicely and complimented the dish quite well. We have been coming here of the past 12 years as regular customers and recommended Kobkun to everyone. However, we were so disappointed with our last visit. To start off, our waitress (she seemed newish) was very rude and practically yelled at me when I asked her to adjust the spiciness of the dish. We asked for mildly spicy dish. She instead brought us a completely non-spicy dish. The Thai grilled chicken was extremely dry so was the sticky rice that came with it. Drunken noodles were mushy. Papaya salad tasted of mold. I think the owners should look into attitude of their staff towards customers and ensure quality of the dishes. Long story short, yum, and I don't just mean Tom Yum. ;-) The wife and I were quite hungry when we decided to go here. So the plate of complimentary edamame (sorry I don't know what they call it in Thai) was a welcome tide-over. It comes with two dipping sauces, one of which is about as hot as you might expect at a Thai restaurant -- a level I would have enjoyed twenty or thirty years ago, but can't take much any more. The other was mellower, more of a sesame-oil taste and a touch of heat, rather than hot chilis. The drinks menu was a bit surprising; in addition to the red and white wines, there were sparkling wines as well, and in addition to the Thai (Singha and Chang) and American mass-market beers, there was Guinness. If you've read my prior reviews, you know I like dark malty beers, but it didn't seem quite right with Thai food, so I had a Singha. (Chose that one because the waitress said she preferred Chang because it was more like a _light_ beer. Different strokes.) The drinks menu also had some food named under some of the wines, as a suggestion what to pair it with. As she usually does at Thai places, the wife wanted Drunken Noodles, this time with just veggies (we rarely do that), and we decided on the Roast Duck Curry for the other dish. (We usually split two dishes.) As for how spicy, the waitress said that the first sauce with the edamame was "medium", and "mild" means the seasonings are on the side, so we went for that. Both dishes were delicious, very flavorful, with just a noticeable level of heat. We decided to leave the plate of seasonings alone; it contained five or six small lidded plastic cups of liquid, powder, or seed-like things, and I didn't even open them. The price was quite reasonable, and as we usually do when we order two entrees, we took about half of it home and had no room for dessert. Service was very good, prompt without hovering. It may have helped that there wasn't much of a crowd, perhaps a quarter of the tables being filled. That also contributed to it being nice and quiet, which I like. The booth seating was spacious and comfortable. And a bit of backstory: I had actually been here several years ago, when a pair of recruiters took me out to get to know my desires, qualifications, and personality better. (Thanks SG & SG from SG2!) But we don't often go so far from home for dinner, so I kinda forgot about it. (Yeah, it's only about three and a half miles, but I usually look for inspiration on Yelp with the "within two miles" setting. Five gives me too many choices!) So why _were_ we out so far? We _intended_ to try Mama Tigre's, a new Indian-Mexican fusion restaurant in Oakton, what used to be the Bob Evan's. But when we got there, there was about a 45 minute wait -- and not even any seats available at the bar! Fortunately I knew that in the shopping mall on 123, just west of Hunter Mill, about a half mile up the road, there were several good restaurants of various cuisines. So we headed down there, waited forever to make the left turn (the big problem of the traffic in that stretch), and picked one. I was fairly excited for this Thai place as it was close to my parents house. However that excitement quickly changed to disappointment. I've ordered a handful of things from their menu: Beef Pad Se Ew, Salted Perch and Broccoli, Crispy Duck... I asked about a few other items such as: soft shell crab, taro custard with sticky rice... but they stated that they did not have these items at this time. Everything was just... okay. Nothing stood out to me... except their Crispy Duck. I was extremely disappointed as it was extremely dry... possibly over cooked and recooked. I have been here three times in the last few years, not sure why I kept coming back, but this is the last time I'm here. First, the service is SUPER slow, we had to call them, then we waited 40 minutes for our two appetizers and one entree on a Tuesday night with only four tables of customers. Everything we need, I had to ask at least twice, never refilled the water. Second, the portion of the food gets smaller and smaller each time I come here. There only three small chicken wings for the appetizer and they do not taste good. The main entree eggplant doesn't even look like it has one full eggplant in there. This place is so overpriced for what they give. Third, charged us two beers while we only ordered one beer, if we did not look at the bill carefully, we would have paid for it. The woman did not even say "Sorry", just said she could take one off like she did us a favor. So be sure you check your bill before you pay. The two most recent times I have been here, I've ordered a Thai Iced Tea, not received it, reminded them, and was then charged for two!
