We had experienced Thai cuisine across multiple states and countries, we always approach new Thai restaurants with excitement and hope. Thai Mom caught our attention, and we walked in with high expectations based on the buzz we'd heard. Service & Atmosphere: I have to give credit where it's due - the service at Thai Mom is genuinely excellent. From the moment we walked in, the staff was warm, attentive, and friendly without being overbearing. They checked on us at just the right intervals, refilled our water promptly, and seemed genuinely invested in making sure we had a good experience. The hospitality alone made us want to love this place. The Appetizers - Where Thai Mom Shines: We started with their BBQ pork skewers, and honestly, these alone are worth mentioning. What sets Thai Mom's version apart is their unique preparation style - it's noticeably different from the standard BBQ pork skewers you'll find at most Thai restaurants. The meat had great char and flavor, and the accompanying sauce was tasty with a nice balance of sweet, savory, and tang. This dish gave us real hope for the rest of the meal. The fried calamari came next. Yes, the portion is on the smaller side, especially if you're sharing, but the quality makes up for the quantity. The batter is well-seasoned and achieves that perfect crispy texture without being greasy. The calamari itself was tender and fresh - clearly not frozen rubber rings. A solid execution of what could easily be a throwaway appetizer. We also tried the crispy pork slices. While the slices are quite thin (thinner than I prefer, honestly), the sauce they're served with is absolutely awesome. It's got depth, complexity, and that perfect balance that makes you want to lick the plate. The sauce honestly does the heavy lifting here, but sometimes that's all you need. The Entrees - Where Things Fell Apart: Unfortunately, this is where our experience took a disappointing turn, and I'm genuinely puzzled by the disconnect between the appetizers and mains. The boat noodles were our first red flag. If you've had authentic boat noodles - whether in Thailand, at hole-in-the-wall spots in Thai Town, or even at some of the better Thai restaurants stateside - you know there's a very specific flavor profile: deep, rich, slightly funky, with that characteristic broth that's been simmered for hours. Thai Mom's version was missing... something. We couldn't quite put our finger on what exactly, but the soul of the dish just wasn't there. The broth tasted flat and one-dimensional, lacking the complexity and depth that makes boat noodles so addictive. The Kapow fried rice was even more disappointing. Kapow (holy basil) is literally in the name of the dish, yet there were barely any leaves to be found. What we got tasted more like a standard Chinese-style fried rice heavy on soy sauce - not necessarily bad, but completely missing the point of what makes Kapow fried rice distinct. Where was the aromatic punch of holy basil? The slight heat? The wok hei? It felt like someone made fried rice and just labeled it "Kapow" without understanding what the dish is supposed to be. The real letdown, though, was the Ba Mee Moo Dang (egg noodles with red BBQ pork). Given how excellent their BBQ pork skewers were, we had high hopes for this dish. Instead, the red pork tasted boiled - like it had been poached or steamed rather than given that signature charcoal BBQ treatment that creates those crispy, caramelized edges and smoky depth. It was a completely different product from their appetizer pork, and not in a good way. For a dish where the pork is the star, this was a significant miss. The Verdict: Here's the pattern we noticed: every single appetizer we tried was good to excellent. Every single entree we tried ranged from mediocre to disappointing. That's not a coincidence - it suggests that either there's a different cook handling appetizers versus mains, or the kitchen's strengths lie in smaller, simpler preparations rather than complex entrees. As someone who reviews restaurants regularly and understands that every place has off nights, I wanted to give Thai Mom the benefit of the doubt. But the consistency of the appetizer quality versus the entree quality suggests this isn't just a fluke. Would I Return? Honestly? Probably not for a full meal. If I were meeting friends for drinks and apps, Thai Mom would be a perfectly fine choice - the service is lovely, the BBQ pork skewers are legit, and the atmosphere is pleasant. But for a proper Thai dinner where I'm craving those comforting, soul-satisfying entrees? I'd look elsewhere. Three stars feels fair - it's squarely "it's okay" territory. The excellent service and solid appetizers keep it from being two stars, but the disappointing entrees prevent it from reaching four. I've been here multiple times for authentic Thai food! The owner is the absolute sweetest and makes most the food her self. The flavors are strong and do not get lost in any dish. Be careful for the spicy, because it's very spicy The pad Thai was super flavorful and moist. Not dry or lacking flavor. It had so much umami and tang to it! The pad Thai noodle soup is SOO good. There is a good sourness to it but also spice. Both dishes were amazing. The Thai tea was creamy and sweet and had a strong tea flavor. And lastly, the papaya salad. This was the star of the show. Omg, I'm telling you when I say GET THIS.. I mean GET IT! It's one of those things where you can get anywhere but a lot of places do not do it right. A friend recommended this restaurant as a place to eat authentic Thai food. It was a hole in the wall and not super close to where I was staying but the food and service was great. The space was warm and inviting and the staff was so welcoming, they were very patient with me and answered all of my questions. I ordered the Crying Tiger and it was delicious, it was a great balance of flavors and ground pork belly over rice with a fried egg, that was out of this world delicious. The food came out in a timely manner. The restaurant was quiet but they had two families enjoying their meals. The restaurant in this location used to be called Thai Treasure - we're not sure if it was rebranded or completely new ownership but we decided to try it out since we were in the mood to try some restaurants in the Vienna area and we love Thai food. My partner saw that they had a raw crab papaya salad so he decided to try that. I knew I probably wouldn't enjoy it but I tried a bite anyway. You could really taste the rawness of the crab in the salad. As I guessed, it was not for me but my partner seemed to really like it. For my entree, I got the Tom yum noodle soup - they didn't ask me for the spice level and I forgot to ask them to adjust it. It is very spicy! Even my partner thought so and he can usually handle spicy food very well. Besides the spice level, I thought it was pretty tasty. It was not packed when we got there but the dinner rush started to come in as we ate our meal, which is always a good sign. The food came out very quick and the waiter kept coming to refill our cups. Thai mom is one of the most authentic Thai places I have had not just in the DMV but the US. And not only are the flavors authentic, but it's authentically DELICIOUS and they really are generous with their portions for the proteins. I unfortunately only found the restaurant after I moved to DC and went to Vienna for a vet appointment but ever since then I go every time to pick food up after my annual vet appointments. First of all it's really hard to find restaurants that have a dish with the raw shrimp and Thai mom has TWO types, one with the green sauce and garlic and a mango salad one; both dishes are AMAZING. I'm pretty sure they actually handmake all of their sauces because I do not get that generic Thai flavor that I get at most DMV/US Thai restaurants eg the sauce for their crispy tofu or the seasonings of steak salad, and the street food versions of the tom yum and duck noodle soups. The duck noodle soup is insanely deep in flavor without having a strong sickly sense of MSG and the tom yum is actually reminiscent of those I've had in Thailand in it's flavor profile vs all of the generic lemongrass forward blandish type flavor that US Thai restaurants have. The fact their tom yum has liver should tell you something! Also, their papaya salad with crabs is insanely flavorful with the perfect amount of zest (I am very spiteful of papaya salads that are not strong in the zing of citrus) and spice and the crab even had eggs (a surprising delight for my Korean self). Be warned though, I have a high spice tolerance and the Thai spice is very barely tolerable and the spicy is even pretty spicy without rice or a dairy. You're in luck though because Thai mom has had the most fragrant and flavorful Thai iced coffee and Thai iced tea; and they don't skimp on the tea portion (4/5 full in the to-go cup of tea vs 1/2 to 3/5 full in many other places) read more

I explained to her it's the zillion times I've had it around Vienna, falls church and DC never have I tasted something like that - it should be very soft never chewy with that smell .! On Christmas Eve, I ordered crab fried rice and tom yum noodle soup for our dinner. It was my first time trying this restaurant because of good reviews. I used Google to order and double-checked for peanuts since my husband is super allergic. Google menus included list of ingredients used for each menu. Because there was no mention of peanuts, I chose tom yum noodle soup. Other menu items that contained peanuts clearly listed peanuts as ingredients. When we got our food and started our Christmas Eve dinner, my husband had a bit of the soup and got sick right away. I was worried and reached out to the store manager, Emmie. Her response was that it was our fault for not leaving a note. But there wasn't a place to leave a note when ordering. Our Christmas Eve dinner was ruined because of this. read more

This was a carryout order. First, the good: everything was ready when I arrived, packed nicely and I was quickly greeted and given my food. I ordered drunken noodles, papaya salad, Tom Kha soup, and pork skewers. Drunken noodles were tasty, well seasoned. My only criticism on that dish was that roughly 20% of the container was onions, many of which hadn't really cooked down to match the consistency of the dish. I didn't eat them. Pork skewers were also tasty; wish there had been more of the sauce with them, but they were good. Now, the less good: I love Tom Kha soup, and this is something of a barometer for me on any Thai restaurant. Thai Mom's version was super heavy on the milk part and really missing the hot, sour zing to this soup. Not much lemongrass. Lots of mushrooms, which I like, less chicken than I was expecting. Similarly, papaya salad should be spicy and vinegary with loads of flavor. I have never had a worse, more flavorless papaya salad in my life. This was just bad.
