We are long time customers of this business. Many years a customer. I think we will be taking a long break from Sakoonthai, and going elsewhere. I ordered the following chicken: "Ginger Flavored: Stir fried with fresh ginger, onions, black mushroom, snow pea, baby corn, bell pepper in our special black bean sauce" There was no black bean sauce. Zero. Black bean sauce has a distinctive look to it, to be sure. There was barely any sauce, and what little sauce was there, was a perfectly clear sauce. I did call the restaurant right away to let them know, because I did not eat what I received. My dinner was not good and a complete waste. Unfortunate. Even more unfortunate was the fact that the person I spoke with did not seem to either believe me or care. I will add a photo of what I received in a bit. Sakoonthai is the cutest little place where you would first discount the food because the place looks more like a cafe than a reputable restaurant. However, when you go in, you'll be surprised to find that all the flavors are pretty solid. FIrst, the crab fried rice is something that I wouldn't ordinarily order but based on the other reviews, I felt like I had to. It was solid! Also, the flavors of basil chicken were on point like any reputable Thai place. Lastly, the watercress salad was also just as good as reviewed. It was crunchy and savory, sweet but also acidic. The pros - cute restaurant, tastefully decorated, clean. Service was attentive. Sodas reasonably priced at only $2.50. The cons - the food. I ordered the Sakoonthai Duck which is fried duck with crispy basil on top. The meat was so tough you couldn't cut it with a fork, which is a problem because they only give you a spoon and fork. So I had to pick up the pieces and bite them in half. The meat had the consistency of beef - not duck. I don't know how they made duck meat SO tough. My husband got the drunken noodles and said it was just "eh". Portions were small. At $19 for the duck I would expect leftovers, though honestly I wouldn't have taken them home anyway. I have been here 3 times now and it has been consistent and enjoyable each time - service, food, and experience overall. The restaurant is a longer, more compressed layout that has a lot of seating for a smaller space, but it can really fill up. The service is consistent across servers that I've experienced - they are neutrally friendly; the service is a little over the bare minimum, but not disappointing. They won't make you feel like you're special but instead like you're just another customer that they are going to feed and send on your way. No complaints. The food is consistently good, hence we keep coming back when we visit the area. We normally get the summer rolls, thai red curry, and pad thai. Good weekday lunch special - could use a little more spice. 3.5 stars - the extra half a star for the side choice selection. I had the lunch special here on a Friday and it was pretty darn good. Tastes were authentic but the "spicy" dishes could have used more spice. The lunch special offers 2 sides from among 3 choices: fried spring roll, papaya salad, or tom yum chicken soup. Since I had dining companions, I tried all three. The fried spring roll was average. It was not a fried stick of tasteless goo like at some other places. It had decent structure inside and good flavor, but it was rather plain. The sweet chili sauce on it was average and also had somewhat of an artificial pinkish hue to it. The tom yum chicken soup was similarly average but tasty enough to be satisfying. In my opinion, the papaya salad was the best of these three. It was crisp and fresh tasting, and had a good hint of chili spice to it. For entrees, we had the garlic tofu, drunken noodles, and chicken pad krapow. The garlic tofu came in a ring of undercooked broccoli. It could have been steamed longer or integrated with the cooking of the tofu and sauce. The flavor profile was lighter and less intense than at other Thai restaurants. Both the drunken noodles and the pad krapow delivered with familiar flavors, but underperformed on spice level. They were both denoted on the menu with 2 chili symbols but really came out weak (1 or less on the Universal Thai Spice Scale - UTSS). I'd come back here for the lunch special, or just to try anything else off the full menu, but I'd want to ask the kitchen to up their seasoning to match UTSS standards. read more

When we are up in the D.C. area, this is one of our favorite stops! I ordered the Thai Red curry (with extra sauce - you will understand when you try it)! My daughter ordered the Pad Thai with tofu. I've tried most of the things on the menu and have so many favorites from chicken ka paow, pad Thai, drunken noodles, green curry, tofu kapaow. The most surprising thing on the menu is their yum watercress salad. I've never seen this on the menu any where, but it's delicious. It's deep fried watercress with shrimp, squid, chicken, in a fish saucey, lime dressing with cilantro and cashew. It's tangy, savory, spicy- I'm drooling. It's a must try! Ordered to go here because of the reviews. New to VA and looking for a new Thai place to order from. I ordered the pad Thai veggie with extra egg and it tasted pretty good, however I would have to say that there were too many veggies on top; I normally like the vegetables but I didn't quite like the cabbage that was added. I think as far as pad Thai goes it was good enough to order again, maybe I'll take out certain vegetables next time. The Thai tea that I ordered was delicious and freshly made when my husband came to pick up our order so I would say that the service was great. My husband ordered the Pad See Eiw Noodle and he didn't like it too much and I tried it and the flavor just wasn't there. We also ordered spring rolls which I didn't know came with meat (not a vegetarian but usually spring rolls don't come with meat at all), and would love to have known that ahead of time. The taste was just OK, there was way too much pepper used as a spice, so I was kind of disappointed. We tried the shrimp cake appetizer as well and I thought there would be more to it but it was literally just fried shrimp with no flavor and shaped like little circular disks. All in all I would say I'll try it again because it was just my first time and we didn't try everything, but hope to get better tasting items next time. read more

This is my favorite place to order Thai food from with my husband. We normally do take out because the inside of the restaurant is quite small (wouldn't recommend groups of more than 4) and we only live a few minutes away. The staff is always very friendly to us over the phone and in person. We love their Thai iced tea which is packed with flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. For food we really enjoy their spring rolls, pad thai and massuman curry. The curry is the best we have found in the area and we normally add chicken to the pad thai which is always a big hit. Make sure to remember to specify the spice level you would like for your entrees as they are all customizable to your liking! The spring rolls are also great but just beware the portion may be smaller than other places (order comes with 3). We feel so lucky to have this spot right around the corner from us and would encourage you to check it out as well. The yellow chicken curry was just as delicious, if not better, than I remembered. We also indulged in the yum watercress salad, a specialty that is not commonly found on Thai restaurant menus. Store dining during lunch. 1. No one is watching the door to seat people. We stood there for 6min until til someone finally acknowledged us. 2. We ordered shrimp pad Thai , Larb Gai and 2 appetizers. The appetizer and my Larb Gai came out in about 15 min. However the pad Thai has not showed up after an additional 20min. I am now 35-40min on and can't enjoy food with my wife cause I'm still waiting on her food. I don't care how good your food is. Daughter and I went here for lunch on a recent Friday afternoon. I remember when it used to be in a bigger space near Office Depot by Costco. The place is much smaller now. Decor is cute and cozy, if a little tight. We got the lunch special, which includes two small appetizers and a main dish. My DD got spring roll and papaya salad and Pad Thai for her main. I got Tom Yum soup and papaya salad, with ground chicken and eggplant as the main. She got a Thai iced tea as well. Apps were excellent. Papaya salad was surprisingly spicy. I loved it, but my DD thought it was too spicy. If you have read any of my other reviews, you know I have a pretty high spice tolerance. Pad Thai was good at a medium spice. My dish was listed as two chilis, but I didn't find it very spicy. I could have gone up a chili. All in all, good service quick and friendly. Everything was clean and well organized. I decided to get tofu this time instead of chicken or beef as my protein and I would say it is really worth it. The tofu had a great texture and soaked the flavor in as well. We decided to give this place one more try and it was another disappointment. Saturday 8:52pm they said actually their kitchen closes at 9. I pointed out that it's not even 9 and that they advertise open houses til 9:30 but I was met with blank stair. We just left. There is a nice Italian place 5min away where they met us with smiles and left us with pleasant feeling and full stomach. Never going to give SUCKoonthai another try.
