Years ago, we had Koch & White move an air conditioning unit. The previous homeowners had placed the unit right outside the dining room window. The sound was intrusive, so we had K&W move it to a spot still in the shade but near the garage. Much better! Recently, our furnace ignitor broke and all we needed was a replacement part. So we drove over to pick up the part ourselves, saving a service call and a huge bill. Nice to be able to get the part close to home the same day. Update: Hubby had been doing what he could to keep our water heater alive, draining it periodically to remove sediment. One night, the water didn't seem as hot as usual. I thought it was merely the chilly autumn temperatures. Nope. The water heater was dying. Next morning, there was no hot water. Hubby got on the phone with Koch & White. As a first time homeowner, when my air conditioning unit in my townhouse stopped working I had little knowledge of where to turn. Koch & White was extremely professional, they came out right away to assess the situation. After discovering the issue could not be fixed the technician discussed options for a new unit. I was able to schedule an installation time quickly, and when a sooner installation date became available the company called and let me move up my install date. They even rewired my furnace for me after they discovered a major wiring error, something a different company had installed incorrectly! Throughout the process everyone I spoke with was professional and courteous, they even refunded me when a paperwork error resulted in me not receiving my 2% discount! And based on the way this person drives the company vehicle, I would not want to give my business to this company considering the disrespect this employee has for his fellow human on the road. Scope of work: Install new furnace, A/C unit, humidifier, and water heater Estimates obtained: 4, Koch & White ended up 2nd highest estimate. Payment Accepted: Cash, Check, Credit card. Making the appointment for an estimator to come out to my home was easy. Eric (the estimator) showed up on time. He was courteous, clean attire, and knowledgeable. Eric told me that the install job would be extensive. I received the estimate two days after my first contact with Eric. The estimate included multiple options for each piece of equipment. I researched everything and decided which options worked best for us. I paid my down payment with a quick stop into the Koch & White office. Eric ordered my equipment and someone from install called to setup my installation days. It should be noted that this was a conversion from propane to natural gas job, so I was dealing with timing the gas line with DTE at the same time. Eric gave me all the information I needed and helped guide me through the DTE paperwork. The first day of installation I met the team, Josh and his trainee. From the moment Josh had boots on the ground he was courteous, thorough and professional. During the initial conversation Josh laid out the scope of work and a tentative schedule to complete said work. Josh made sure to check in with me during the entire process in an effort to answer any questions that I had. He had to work for the first two days of the install with roofers onsite, and never batted an eye. He also had to work with a trainee that was as motivated as a sack of potatoes with a general lack luster disposition. If there is any true testament to the quality work Josh does, it is that I never once felt intruded upon, inconvenienced or uncomfortable during the process. Josh left the work site cleaner than he had found it every day, and for a tradesmen that really speaks volumes. I mean there wasn't as much as a greasy finger print on my trim. Josh is a true gentlemen and excellent tradesman. The job did end up going over the original estimated time to complete, I attribute this mostly to the sub par trainee they sent with Josh. I honestly believe Josh could have done things a lot faster without having to manage the trainee's lack of drive, and courteousness. It has to be tough finding good tradesmen these days, and with this type of work, I suppose you don't really know if someone will work out unless you give them a chance. I don't fault them for sending the trainee, but I do hold them accountable for continuing to send him. Overall, this was a great experience and reflected what I have come to expect from Koch & White after 10 years of working with them, outstanding service and work. This is why I have and will continue to use them for service at our home and also at our income property. Thank you for the great work from start to finish, and thanks for sending Josh. (Side note: I wrote a letter to the company and sent it with the survey they mailed me. The president of the company called me to thank me for my letter, and apologized for the trainee. Loved the options they gave us, and how quick the install was done. Considering they had to remove the old furnace and put in an AC unit where one had never been the process was mostly painful The installers were professional, friendly and one had quite the singing voice :-) It wasn't the cheapest quote we got but I don't mind paying for quality. My only complaint is that once we decided to go with them, the units took a while to arrive but I'm pretty sure that's standard across most providers, just with winter staring us down it was getting nervy. read more

We had a tech come out in August when our pipes froze up they said to turn on the fan and shut the air off. He cane our changes the filter wrapped a pipe with foam insulation. Checked the Freon .He said it was fully charged . And nothing wrong with it.. And charged ya $250. Two weeks later the same thing happened again. So a different tech came out and l looked it over he came back inside the house after he was outside for 15 minutes . He said that we had leaks in the system he said the back of the condenser was all rotted out rusted out and then we would need a new air conditioner he said we should also get a new furnace at the time. I said how could we go from one extreme to the other within 2 to 3 weeks the other guy said everything was fine no problem no leaks no nothing then all the sudden we need a new air conditioner we're leaking Freon somewhere. I told him that I would have to talk it over with my husband and I said that they were not charging me for that visit he said no you owe me $250 for putting Freon into your air conditioner he never asked me he just did it he never fixed the leak or found it . It lost all the Freon. How could it be okay two weeks before and the first guy never says one word about the back of the condenser being rusted out. The law requires them to inform you and they have to fix the leak before they can add Freon. The owner was okay with the tech doing this to us. I o $250 for Freon that they added and never told us they never found the leak or fixed it.L I would recommend checking around before you have them service your air conditioner..We are oalso reaching out to the consumers protection agency to let them know how this company takes advantages of customers. read more

K&W provides the best service of any company around. They have bailed us out of binds when we have been thousands of miles away and today came out within a hour of my call that we had lost our heat. The technician, Chris, explained everything clearly after determining that the problem was that the gas was not getting in and waited until I had an appointment with DTE to fix the meter. DTE arrived and confirmed the defective meter and is replacing it. Over the past years they have replaced our old furnace and air and have always done what they said they would do when they said they would do it. Much appreciated. read more

This is the second time I have worked with Koch and White (once at the old house, and once here at my current home). Both times, I have been very impressed with their sales folks, installers and the end product. Their sales guy came out and discussed all my options, and asked which I'd prefer quoted. Their prices were in-line with the others who offered similar products. There was no pressure sales with them -- it was here is our estimate and we hope to work with you -- and that was it. No games, which I appreciate. They were out earlier this week to install my HVAC system, and they did a fantastic job. They corrected some problems that were created when my old furnace was installed and did a VERY clean install. They also kept my home very clean in the process. Then, after the sale, the folks back at their office prepare all the documents you need for the various tax credits, utility credits and rebates and mail them to you to sign and submit, so there is little work needed on the consumers' part. A very streamline and professional process. After some quote fiascos with other local contractors, I couldn't be happier with Koch and White. read more

This company not only installed part of my airconditioning unit incorrectly but when I had them come back to give the unit a spring tune up they didnt recognize their own faulty work. When my cooling system was not working well i asked a plumber who was at my house for another job to look at the drainage set up for the AC and he noticed and informed me of the botched grading of the system and he was surprised kotch never did anything about it. When we called kotch and white later on they denided doing anything wrong and wouldnt come over to even look at it. This company sucks! Other service workers in same industry have told me the same thing over the years as well. Dont use them! read more

I had a coupon and used Koch & White to service the central air unit at my new house back in 2010. They serviced it and said it was all set and then the next day it stopped working again. They returned and supposedly fixed the issue but shortly thereafter it stopped working again. After a third visit, it turned out they installed some part backwards causing the system to fail. We went a year without issue but recently the a/c and furnace stopped working again. A different company had installed a new furnace and they came to check it out and believed more issues with the a/c had caused the transformer and circuit board to fail. I called Koch & White and because it had been more than a year since they last "repaired" our a/c, they would not offer any help. Will not use them again - nothing but problems since their first repair tech came to "service" the a/c. read more

About 2 years ago, my furnace broke. The technician said that was because of the broken control board. He ordered one online but was not sure the exact price. The following Tuesday, I called the office to check the price. I was told that the technician was already on the way. I was later told by the technician "$500 for the control board only" though I checked online the same Lanox board on Smazon and Ebay is from $79- $150. Finally, I paid over $700 for that. Within short time, it didn't work. The second time was the issue of ignitor. Then, Dec 2013, the furnace didn't work gain, another technician from Koch and White said that " It is the control board!" I replied , "No way, I will order tge board online and pay you the technician fee to help me put into it." Within 3 days, the office called me, "Sorry, it is not the control board! it is the ignitor!" I offer you the price $140 to fix it. I agreed. March 14, 2014, my furnace broke again. I called the office, I said, "It should be the issue of the ignitor. In Dec 18, 2013, I paid $140.59 to replace the ignitor. It has been just 3 months. It should be covered." I was told, "In Dec 2013, you paid for the labor cost and the replacement of flame sensor, we didn't charge you the ignitor. It was covered that time as you replaced ignitor in Jan 2013. " ( I remember though I argued last Dec about the ignitor, they said that the ignitor was not covered) For God's sake, I WAS NOT told that the flame sensor had any problem and finally got replaced without being informed. That means I need to pay for the ignitor again. So, now......I am speechless!!!! read more

Had them replace a heater for me a few years ago, and they just did some inspection and cleaning work. VERY polite and professional, and when they had to come back and check a leak on the heater they didn't even charge for over an hour's work. We have used Koch and White for our heating and AC systems for years. We have never had an issue as far as service or installation goes. My in-laws have had an ac system at their old house put in with no problems as well as 2 furnaces and an ac last fall at their house they bought. Installation was beautiful (as much as a mechanical installation can be) and the workers were conscientious and respectful. We have never had to wait long for service and in most cases was same day or next day. I find their rates comparable with other service companies in Ann Arbor and like that they have an after hours emergency service. I would recommend Koch and White to anyone without hesitation. read more

We had a terrible experience with this company which serviced our geothermal heating and cooling system multiple times---never effectively repairing it. They were repeatedly unprofessional in their interactions, at one point coming to service our unit without the necessary equipment, but nevertheless trying to charge us for the service call, and another time charging us $1300 for service that they verbally "guaranteed", and then having it break down 1 week later--at which point they refused to stand by their guarantee. We have reported them to the Better Business Bureau. read more

Last summer I had my AC disconnected in order to landscape the East side of our house. The contractor I hired to disconnect the system did not believe in flushing the lines with nitrogen to remove moisture when reconnecting so I decided to contract Koch and White for the reconnect. I called an explained my situation and was quoted $350. When Koch and White preformed the reconnect they sent 2 technicians. The reconnect was as simple and straightforward as can be with zero parts required, zero issues, zero troubleshooting. They then proceeded to charge me $700, ie double what I was originally quoted. I could not believe what was happening. It was a blatant rip off. I refused to pay and eventually spoke with their supervisor who reduced the bill to $400. Koch and White are supposed to be a reputable local community business. I could not believe the blatant attempt to overcharge for what was an extremely simple and straightforward job. I used these guys for a hopefully simple AC fix. The serviceguy, Joe I think his name, was courteous and honest. He was quick, didn't find extra stuff that "needs" replacing. Just did is job, didn't gouge me for time, even answered a few questions on how to get a few more years life out of the furnace/AC. Very disappointing. Charge 85$ to drive out to residence and assess concerns (our "assessment" took less than 5 minutes). Nothing else is included in this "Service Fee." Charge 166$ for a 38$ thermostat. Charge 42$ for a 30$ filter. When I called to ask about charges I was told, "we need to make money." I understand that labor and having knowledgable professionals install is included in the total cost so some markup was expected, but this was a 140$ markup, not including the 85$ drive out fee. I knew we needed a new filter, and knew we possibly needed a new thermostat. Our understanding when we called to schedule the "service fee" was that the 85$ would include a full look at our furnace system (spending more than 5 minutes), and include installing a new filter. They were not clear with what the "Service Fee" would include...nor is is written on their website. The $140 markup is very disappointing, along with the 85$ flat rate for their time (5 minutes to drive and 5 minutes to assess) and gas to drive...I guess? read more
