The unit itself runs great, house feels more comfortable. Much Even temperature across the levels. The crew was very efficient. They did have a hiccup. But they came back and fixed the following day. They did not even take payment before I am happy. They were not the cheapest. But their quote was much better than most other companies in the area. My furnace fan died after 18 years. Initially, I tried another company. They came out and said it is either the motor or the board. I thought they should be able to diagnose better than a guess. I called Crain and they were out to the house the next day. They plugged in a tester and informed me that it was the motor control module that was bad. The cost to repair was $1200.00 and the system was 18 years old. I elected to have a complete system (furnace and AC) installed. Crain was there the next day and did a complete install in one day. There was some miscommunication about Lennox financing but that issue falls to Lennox rather than Crain. Workers were prompt and courteous. They covered my basement carpet with a tarp and even covered my wood flooring steps with a tarp trying to be overly cautious of my home. I thought the tarp on the steps was dangerous for them but that's what they did. I don't believe the cost of the system was out of line. Prompt service, good pricing, courteous workers, steps taken to protect my home, and the install went smoothly. Not sure what more you could ask for. There is always someone who will find fault with some minuscule detail but they did a good job for me. The most important question, Would I recommend this company to you. Answer, Yes. As a new resident in an old house, I had a non-functional 90s-vintage AC unit. I chose Crain to replace it with a Lennox. Tear out and installation went smoothly, everything was done in a reasonable amount of time and was done cleanly and quietly. New unit works great and interfaces with my digital thermostat and existing furnace with no issues. There was only one issue with install - the guy who came to quote didn't account for the increased size of the new unit, so the installers had to actually remove part of my brick landscape border to fit the pad for the new unit. They did it cleanly and let me know before they changed anything, but it took extra time and I would have liked to know that was going to be necessary before the install. read more

Very responsive but tech came out to service AC and told me it was $4000 to replace or $1000-$1400 to refill r-22 coolant. He stated it was roughly $200 per lb of coolant and it was very expensive because it's the older coolant...it's $10-30 per lb and sold on eBay on top of that. Had someone come out and fix the leak and recharge the system with 4lbs (not 7 like we were told) for $218. The people are very nice but they play the "it's old and cost too much to fix so just replace it" card to often and now I will not use this company or recommend anyone to use them. It's a shame companies are taking this approach so quickly to make more money. The funny things is this was almost the exact same line we were fed with our furnace 4yrs ago. Step it up people. Even the Inspectors validated the work saying "they always do good work". Wish it all cost less but that applies to just about everything today. Outrageously expensive! I have been dealing with these guys for several years and they used to provide good service at a reasonable price. I am not sure what happened in the past two years that made them jack up their prices across the board. Expect to pay 2-3 times the price of other local heating/ cooling businesses. I used to call them for service without shopping around or seeking other quotes because I had loyalty and trust for whatever value they provided. This is something that I cannot do anymore. Amazing service, especially while working in our house today. They removed and installed our furnace and air conditioner for a great price in timely fashion. We just bought our house 2 years ago and the air-conditioner never worked properly. We had a bad experience with a plumber a few months ago so I did some extra research before calling around. I called up crane and they sent out a specialist. My wife was at home and they called me with information - our 1988 furnace and 1989 A/C needed to be replaced. They answered all of my detailed questions and the quote looked good after searching around online. We had a group of visitors spending the week at our house, so they agreed to fill up the Freon in the meantime while they were visiting, and install the new appliance when they were gone. The Crain employees showed up at 8:45am. They worked hard all day, removed all of the old appliance parts and answered all the questions I had while being pleasant visitors to our house. I highly recommend their service. The value of our house goes up and we can more efficiently live more comfortably - it's all good. read more

Even though here are heating and cooling companies right here in Ann Arbor, I originally used Crain Heating and Cooling due to their Yelp reviews (yes, they come all the way out here!), and have used them several times and was never disappointed. They will come out as soon as possible, same day or next day most of the time, and get things done right! The first time I called them was when our thermostat started to burn out so we couldn't see the temperature anymore. They brought out several options to choose from and got the job done fast and with a great replacement that was fairly priced. This time they just came out when my A/C broke. They said they've been so inundated with calls in this first heat wave that they had to turn off their phones to catch up at one point, yet they still made me feel like a priority. Even with the amount of orders I'm sure they were filling, the time from my call scheduling an appointment until a repaired unit was two days, and that was only because they had to order a part. My time window for the final repair was from 4-8 pm, and when 7:30 or so rolled around without a call, I assumed they were just going to put me off til tomorrow. But lo and behold I got a call at 7:59 letting me know they were just leaving West Bloomfield but were still coming. At 9:30 at night, I finally had functioning A/C! I don't know of any other companies that still honor the date they gave even if they are running that late. I was thrilled. My only complaint, and this isn't enough to knock off a star, is their phone system. I had a couple different issues with it- one time my phone rang when the technician was on his way over but when I answered it was just their voicemail, and another time their office called me, but when I answered it rang a few more times before someone picked up. They could use a more streamlined service. However, to their credit they check their voicemail and call back anytime before 9 pm, which was awesome (and helpful since my repair window was after 5:00). If I could I would give zero stars. Just awful. I called and they gave me a time frame from 12 pm - 5:00 pm. So let's just start with the 5 hour time frame. So I decided to give them a try despite the large time frame. Then at 4:30, on the day I was waiting, I called their main number because no one had called yet telling me they were on the way. I was told they would look into it. Two minutes later the main office calls back and tells me that unfortunately the tech assigned to my job is still at another one and they can extend the time frame and he could be there some time between 4 pm and 8 pm or they could come the next day between 12 - 5 pm. Very prompt and professional service. I called during what seemed to be a very busy morning for them. However staff was still very pleasant and was able to get me on the schedule that day. Tech Jason arrived on site five hours after my trouble call. Jason was able to fix issue in less than 30 mins and only charged me for the service call. It was by no means a big job for Crain but it was important to me and they understood that. I had previously worked with Belleville Canton Heating and AC two months prior to this issue and the service was very poor, rude and expensive. I was charged $200 for less than 30 mins of work and I feel the issue was not serviced properly. When I called back regarding my current issue as it was very similar I was talked to in a very rude manner and was informed he would call me back in a few days when he could fit me in his schedule. Five days later and still no call. I will have Crain come out and do a full inspection to assure I have no surprises when I start using the furnace portion again.
