Fantastic! This is a more rustic winery vibe, not the over commercialized ones you find around here. Super chill lots of seating, great big trees to shade under and the fabulous Emus! Came towards the end of the day and the staff was super friendly, kind, and let us either purchase a bottle or do a tasting. With their tasting menu, you can choose 5 wines from their list to try. The grounds are huge with tons of outdoor tables, benches, and lounging areas. They also have tons of ostriches on site that you can see as well! The quality of the wine is excellent consistently through their varieties of whites and reds. The flavor, finish and balance of Koehler wines make them a true pleasure to enjoy. I have found them superb as a standalone taste experience and paired with meals. We always stop at Koehler when we're visiting the Santa Ynez valley. Their outdoor tasting area is comfortable and laid back. The grounds are beautiful. Dan has always been on the counter when we visit. He is so personable with a great sense of humor. Stopped by on a Saturday afternoon about 11:30am. There were several groups of people already in full swing. What's nice is that you don't need a reservation. They have LOTS of seating spaced out all over. We shared 1 tasting which gets you 6 tastes of your choice. I forgot to take a picture of the menu. (oops, my bad) I think there were about 12 or 16 wines you could pick from. So... lots of white and red options. We ended up liking several of our tastes so I ended up getting a mixed case. If you buy 12+ bottles... you get a case discount and they comped our tasting. And they ship in case you don't want to lug a case or more of wine around. Shipping charge for my case was $22.... so really reasonable. They didn't seem to mind if you brought your own snacks, lunch as we saw a couple of groups at the picnic tables had coolers with them. I could see spending a few hours here enjoying wine and snacks/lunch. The setting is park-like and really lovely. Oh and they are dog friendly as we saw a couple folks with their dogs. read more

Koehler has one of the most beautiful grounds! They are very family friendly and you can bring your kids and dogs so everyone can have a great experience. My kids had a blast looking at the Emu and sheep on property. Dan is the absolute best!! He is so funny and knowledgeable. He explains all the wines so well. Pretentious, this is not. I've been lucky that every visit I've made has had Dan working, and he's always great! I went here the first time as part of a tour that included two other wineries as well. This is was the only one I enjoyed so much that I joined! The wine is great, and not so high in ABV that it overtakes the flavor. Koehler Winery was our first stop this past Sunday on a day filled with wine tasting, in part because they open early at 10 am. We arrived just a minute or two before they opened and enjoyed the area outside by the parking lot where an emu (or ostrich?) was hanging around. We also enjoyed the friendly cat that was hanging out both inside and outside of the tasting room. Service here was definitely unforgettable. The guy pouring the wines when we were there was very funny and sarcastic, yet knowledgeable. The jokes gave way to both a fun and unpretentious atmosphere. Overall, I thought the wines were all decent, but honestly, not my favorite. Definitely not bad, and as a plus, I felt liked the pours were pretty generous in size. I'm a big fan of Foxen Canyon in general. If you get the chance, definitely visit this area of wine country. I find the drive much more beautiful than some of the other mainstream parts. I would not hesitate to come back to this particular winery, and certainly would recommend it to others, especially animal lovers. We came here on our way to our final destination. It was open early on a weekend and we called first to confirm that we didn't need reservations. We were excited because they said they walked in and they also had emus! We were pretty excited as we drove in. The tasting was done outdoor which was a big space with different areas that you could sit at. We loved the emus. This was winery #2 on a 3 winery wine tasting tour. Would be 5 stars for grounds, lots of picnic tables and ambiance, but Dan's sense of humor came across as stinging and ridiculing toward my husband when hubby wanted to try a red wine first. Dan "jokingly" chastised him and told him he wasn't a true wine drinker if he dared have a red before white, and continued to "jokingly" harass him. It was off-putting and actually made me a bit mad. Hubby likes red wines, plain & simple. Why should we be subjected to ANYONE'S scrutiny for liking what we like? In customer service, perception is everything. Our perception is that Dan thought we were uneducated country bumpkins who he needed to enlighten. We spent $600 on a case of red at winery #1, and $1400 on 2 cases at winery #3, but there was NO WAY we were spending a dime at Koehler after being treated like that by Dan. read more

Really enjoyed our time at this winery. While so many if the wine options is Los Olivos are in the downtown tasting rooms, this was a breath of fresh air. The outdoor space was lovely. Lots of green space, grass, trees, and even an emu farm! There's tons of space for seating as well for all party sizes. There happened to be families , a bus full of people, and couples all over and everyone fit swimmingly. We brought our own food there and ate it while we did the wine tasting. Wine tasting was $20 / person and included 6 tastings. We were able to revisit a few of the wines as well. The service was super friendly and for being so busy they were able to pour the wine and describe it quite efficiently. Definitely a spot worth visiting! read more

This is an adorable place. Super friendly to gatherings of friends, they have picnic tables and seating areas and allow you to bring your own food and enjoy yourself. I would say about 50-60% of the wine was estate grown which is always nice to see. Tastings are $20 for 6, our party got two tastings and then a few glasses. The Grenache blanc was refreshing and went well with the cheeses we brought: triple cream and ibérico. Sangiovese was also a crowd pleaser for us. We got there early (11am) bc we heard it gets crowded and the people did ebb and flow during our time there. It's a great place to hang for a few hours with Dan the wine man and be sure to walk down the hill and check out the emus! read more

First time visiting this winery while I was in Los Olivos. I liked it. The wine was good, the property is large with tons of seating areas. Buy a bottle, don't buy by glass, it's expensive. Maybe a 2-3 rating, depending what you want out of your wine tasting experience. If you want to focus on the wine, don't come here. If you just want to drink and hang out with friends, sure. The area and seating is really nice, there was live music before 2:30pm when we were there on a Saturday. Green and open, outdoors, plenty of shade and seating. Overall people were nice but they didn't really take the time to talk about their wines. It was more of a place for you to just drink. The tasting bar was a little small so that may be why they had to cycle through each pour quickly. You order a tasting, you get a glass and pick any 5 wines... you get your first pour, leave to sip, then come back for your next. You can pick any in any order... I'm sure if you asked they'd give you a suggestion. But you have to specially ask. The wine itself was only so-so. We are a group of just general wine drinkers but none of us cared for the wines. There were a few wine tasting/group buses that came by but it was never overly crowded (at least that day, 2:30-3:30). read more

We stopped by Koehler Winery during our bike ride on Foxen Canyon Road. They were the only winery that didn't require an RSVP, which was a big plus for us since we didn't know how long it would take us to ride there. They had ample outdoor seating and an outdoor tasting area. We not only enjoyed trying their wine flight we also enjoyed some cheese, meat and crackers that we purchased there as well. Out of the 6 tastings we both had, my favorites were the 2016 Chardonnay Reserve and the 2016 Syrah Reserve. The hubs enjoyed the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2016 Syrah Reserve the most. I knew almost nothing about the Santa Ynez Valley for wine tasting before booking a week long trip there. During that time, I got some good recommendations from a local. However, most of the wineries that person recommended were in the 'wine ghetto' which is a series of industrial-style buildings/freight containers. After a while, we wanted to go to a picturesque winery (Napa or Sonoma-style) with seating areas and a bucolic location. The SYV has some beautiful hills and valleys but most of the best wine everyone recommends seems to be a tasting room in a small village or agricultural type of cement building. We went to Dragonette and did a private tasting at their facility, which had all the aesthetic of a 1950's cold war bomb shelter ... but the actual wines were amongst the best we had. Our wine taster was a local, so we asked about picturesque wineries that had decent (or even palatable) wines and she gave us 3 recommendations, including Koehler. A quick google images search seemed to indicate that Koehler was the most picturesque, so into an Uber we got and $12 later and a beautiful drive through some really scenic pastures in the country, we arrived. From the outside, the winery doesn't look like much. Inside, the tasting room is rustic and clean looking and there was plenty of space. The wine tasting person here is big, funny, sarcastic guy. It took me a minute or two to try to figure out if he was fucking with us or being friendly. After a couple minutes, I decided it was the later. He was a hoot (especially the more you drank) and made our visit more fun and less stuffy than you'd expect wine tasting. The customers here looked pretty well-heeled and it wasn't the typical bachelorette party crowd that we dreaded running into ... it was more couples and families. Many of their wines are rated 90 and above. There is a $15 6 wine tasting flight ... and a premium flight for $20. It's $12 for a glass of white wine and $15 for a glass of red wines. A bit pricey for a glass of wine ... but at least you can choose any glass, including the premium wines. I had a few glasses of the 2016 Syrah Reserve, which scored 92 Points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine. It was good ... a little on the light side for my tastes but as a cabernet guy in the midst of Pinot Noir country, I was expecting that. It had a nice spice and was a pretty good glass of wine for the area. They have a little back area where you can sit and enjoy some wine under the shade of a very old olive tree. There are sheep grazing on a hill next to the sitting area and what look like ostriches or emu on the other side. You can walk down to the actual vines, which are beautiful in the winter because you can see pink, yellow and orange leaves in rows, which looks very surreal, almost like a Tim Burton movie. Overall, we would certainly come back here for a tasting or a couple glasses of wine. If you are looking for an actual vineyard type experience vs. tasting rooms on a street in a little town, this is a great spot for it. There is one other vineyard right down the street which our Uber driver (a local) also recommended. We liked that it wasn't crowded when we went and it was very unpretentious. read more

Totally not sure why it took me decades to write this review. We learned of this winery on a wine tour when we were youngsters. We've been members ever since and visiting at least 2-3 times per year for more than the last two decades. Gorgeous grounds with plenty of seating areas so you can picnic and enjoy. No rush whatsoever. Just pure relaxation and enjoyment of the gorgeous weather! Wine is delicious. Reds always a fav but we have grown to love the whites too. Easy to drink and at a great price point. BUT what keeps us coming back is Dan! He is the best. He is witty and funny and ready to pour great wine! Great tasting room experience with the personable, funny, and knowledgeable Brad, who reminds me of a mixture of Pat O'Brien and Paul Lynde. Think "Access Hollywood Squares". I loved Cutie Pie, a cat who actually gets dropped off and picked up at the winery every day, like it's summer camp. I had a great time at the winery because I got out of town during COVID. I had never really been to wineries before so I went with some friends to go wine tasting at different places. The tasting is decently priced at $20 for 6 glasses/tastings. You get one glass at a time & go back to the counter for more which sometimes is better to just get the 6 at a time but its not too bad. You can also bring your own snacks, which is another bonus. The really cool part about this place is there are Emu's walking around behind a fence of course but you can see them around.
