Kiani and Justine were ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. They ALWAYS are. They treat my client and I so very well and never get irritated with how much times I'm at their counter with yet another request. Kohala coffee is one of my go-to spots Their banana bread cold brew latte is soooo good and the white gummy energy drink is a fave too. I will say it can be a little inconsistent sometimes depending on who's working, but when it's good it's REALLY good. Prices aren't bad at all, they have a solid rewards system, and their happy hour specials are worth it. Plus my kids are obsessed with the cookies & cream milkshakes read more

I say this place is super nice and they have a drive-through and a who doesn't love that! Also their inside the coffee store is very welcoming and beautifully designed! So I am one of those coffee snobs. The base is that the place should be clean. Next friendly Hot coffee I don't as much. You should not have to. The coffee beans should speak, smell and taste to you. A plus with this coffee shop is they have a relationship with the sushi rolls and bowls next to it. You can actually order using your camera feature on your phone. Make a sushi order and have it delivered right to your table. Come here much better coffee than other local places read more

I've been coming here when they first opened during the pandemic. Customer service has always been awesome - even at the height of the pandemic, the staff was always courteous, authentic and just good people. The coffee is tasty, furniture is comfortable, prices are reasonable, WiFi is good and overall great cafe. I've hit up all the coffeeshop on Hilo side and Kohala Coffee is top notch. read more

I like the salted caramel brownie pastry that i was tempted to buy the orange cinnamon loaf. It was a bit too sweet as well. Service was great. I want to start off by saying the service was great and this review has nothing to do with the baristas, just a comment on what I'm assuming is how they are taught. When I was working at coffee stands I was always taught to mix white mocha powders in with coffee shots, not water... once you add water to any coffee I am going to assume it is an americano. It ruins the texture of the coffee unless it is ordered that way. White mochas etc, should not have water in them. The staff was friendly and helpful and my drink tasted amazing after they fixed it! read more

I was in such a rush today that I didn't notice when the drive thru barista handed me a large latte that was only 2/3 full. This place charges WAY too much money for a large latte to be handing their customers a drink that is practically half empty already. read more

I enjoy going through the drive through, I have gone in a couple times. The service is great and they are very friendly and help if you don't know what you want to order. Fair prices for Hawaii. They use Kona medium roast for some of the drinks I get. I like their coffee best so far. I started buying the medium coarse ground form my pot at home. read more

Ok so I've been back to Kohala Coffee since my first review. I have to say every other barista I've had since the first experience had been amazing! The coffee is pretty good too but I've noticed if I get a macchiato I need to ask for an extra shot or something because it's still a little too milky for me. I've seen a friend (shoutout to Tran D.) grab coffee from here multiple times from Hilo. Each time looked amazing! I finally got to drive to Pahoa to give it a try! It's located next to Thep Thai restaurant and across of Malama Market in the Puna Kai shopping center, a newly opened shopping center! There's ample parking that won't ever be a problem. But the shop is currently only doing drive thru. They had such interesting flavors that I had a hard time choosing. Found out sweetness can be adjusted and subbing your milk is free of charge! Shoutout to the girl who answered all our questions and took our order! I ended up ordering their banana bread cold brew with soy with half sweetness. It came out beautifully. With half a layer of coffee on top and the milk and flavoring on the bottom. Super excited to try! I took a sip of just the coffee layer, and it was kind of an interesting taste... with strange aftertaste that I can't put my finger to. It was in a sense "watered down" (but not really) with an "organic" touch. Not sure how to really describe it LOL. But not my favorite. Should have tried it with regular sweetness. We didn't get any straws, so I couldn't mix my drink until much later (after the ice melted)... but when I did, there was definitely a subtle banana bread flavor that wasn't too overwhelming! Definitely helped enhance the flavor a lot more after mixing it. But wished I could have done it earlier saaad. My friends got their cold brew drinks too. This coffee place definitely is unique compared to other coffee shops, making them stand out. It's on the pricier side. But would recommend if you're looking to venture out of Starbucks and other coffee chains! read more

Their drinks are just okay. Be sure to sign up for points. Their pastries are good, especially the blueberry muffins. Staff is friendly. One downside, they still haven't opened up their dining area (Covid). Customers are eating outside with rain and winds blowing. Time to open it up, folks! read more

My favorite place ever for cold brew and ice tea drinks! All the flavors are amazing. My favorite drink is the salted Carmel macchiato cold brew, organic vanilla cold brew with lavender flavor, the shaken ice tea mango and peach. It's wonderful that they have sugar free options, yes you have heard it right it's sugar free whip cream, syrup are all sugar free!! I think it is always taste very good. The price is a little one the pricey end but it is worth it. You can also select oat milk, almond milk or coconut milk as an option. I recommend trying there monthly specials too, each month they have 3 different unique drink for the month or holiday. I truly enjoy there drinks a lot much better than other places. read more

I love it! Three kinds of non dairy milk, decaf coffee available, great flavors. My delicious hot latte on this rainy day came with a complementary Lotus Biscoff cookie (vegan). Ordering and dining takes place outside, I presume because of COVID (i.e., I'm not sure if indoor shenanigans are an option during non COVID times). They have a drive thru. Also on the menu are a "dairy free and egg free" apple strudel stick and a cherry turnover, which I confirmed with the barista means they are in fact vegan. The hot chocolate is vegan if you get it with non dairy milk, and the caramel flavor is vegan (but NOT the sauce/drizzle). They know their stuff. I'll be back for sure!!! read more

The service starts from pulling up and barista takes your order, ask for Mike (smiles) reminds me of my nephew. Place your order pull up to the pay widow , drinks are tasty, refreshing, and create a power of energy burst. Coffee is good and the brownies are to taste. I stopped in there this morning on a whim as I was leaving Malama Market. I saw the poster for the Shamrock Frappe and was intrigued. I ordered that frappe and asked to substitute the milk for soy milk which it says is available right underneath the poster for this frappe on the menu but was told by the employee that came out and took my order that they no longer do that because they use a frappe base. She said the base was lactose free but when I asked if it was gluten free, she said that she didn't think that anything they had there was gluten free. I said, "Well, coffee is gluten free." And she kind of got annoyed with me and asked if I wanted her to check if it was gluten free and I said yes. She came back a minute later and said that she could not say for sure that it was gluten free. This employees attitude and dismissal of my dietary restrictions was very rude and annoying to me. I also was annoyed that the poster said something that was no longer true. To top it off, you all should know what is in the products you are selling to your customers. Don't bother coming at 7 am if you want to be appreciated. The kids behind the counter are bunch of rude brats that could all use a lesson in customer service. No "good morning" no "thank you". ....the ENTIRE staff made me feel like a bother. I'm shopping items for 20 minutes before I realize my food has been just sitting on the counter. I'm the ONLY one there and the kid can't let me know my order is ready? McDonalds next time for sure. Snobby brats need to go. read more

Both were perfect, incredibly fresh, all ingredients balanced, beautifully presented. Paul had us end with the Belgium waffle. I've had waffles in Belgium, and these were the best I've had. Crispy, soft, with berries, whip cream, and powdered sugar, it didn't even need the (warm!) syrup. This experience felt like being a guest in the chef's home. Paul treated all customers as a friend, he was funny, relaxed, and personable. I also personally appreciated it is the safest restaurant for me to eat at as he hates bell peppers as much as I do! He is always busy and has a rule with no Togo orders as far as I know. The service is good, and the servers and Paul himself is very friendly, laidback, and easy to talk to. Be respectful of his rules, he's a nice guy and it felt like he really cares about the food he makes. Playing is very nice and simple in a good way, has a very clean aesthetic. The food itself is extremely fresh, every single thing felt very refreshing to the palette and not heavy. It was one of the pricier spots me and my partner went to in Hilo, but it is extremely popular and the quality of the food is nice, as I said, I think this is the place in Hilo so far that I've eaten at with the "freshest" tasting food. I had not yet tried his Belgian waffles, but I saw they were served to another customer and they looked fantastic. After our meal, Paul also highly reccomended them for next time. Definitely would like to come back next time we are in Hilo, it was one of my partner and her Uncle's favorite spots (they are local to Hilo, so it's gotta be good haha). They both vouch for the ingredient quality.

Mostly in mint color, the interior is simple and yet it does emit a lot of cuteness. What was eye catching to us was the swing inside at one of the side windows. Whether it's okay for a person to actually sit on it to enjoy a little swing time is something I didn't find out from the young lady who manned the upfront bar by herself, if it's solely as a decorative piece to create the kind of ambiance this place suits to manifest, it does do a lot to attract visitors' attention. The lady was quiet and yet kind enough to give us everything we needed for the late morning walk into the town. My daughter and I wanted to split quads of espresso shots so that was our only order and yet we needed two separate cups with lots of ice in each cup with a little side cream (half and half) so we could make our own iced latte or cappuccino later (we didn't want ice immediately after the espresso was made as it would have diluted the coffee had it been made that way. Sounded like it was a little too much to ask which we felt a bit awkward. The kind lady simply did everything for us. Thanks to her for being so accommodating to our demanding needs!!) The shop is located from other businesses oceanfront so it's walkable to other things as long as you are talking "the center of Hilo". So for the location, convenience, cute ambiance and patience in service, we enjoyed our quick pick up experience while we were in town.
