So the Eagles Lighthouse Cafe is no more. Let this be a eulogy then. For starters, let's go with the praise. The food was great. Nice down home cookin', reasonably priced. Now for this. The place was festooned with Bible quotes, Biblical vignettes in the windows, and the three flags of Christian Nationalism garishly out front - the US flag, the Israeli flag, and the nationalist "Plea To Heaven" flag. All paradoxically in tatters and never taken in for good keeping. It did not give off a welcome Biblical vibe though - just one of "agree with us or take it down the road." The kitchen and counter personnel were usually fairly nice people who gave great service. The owners, when they were present, gave off something entirely different. Like you were inconveniencing them by being there. Short tempered and terse if they took your order. If you read the earlier comments, you will hear of them coming unhinged and screaming at some customer about something either overblown, or imagined. They refused to pay their employees properly, with something even close to a living wage. When the Hawaii legislature finally hiked the minimum wage, they stuck out an alarmist notice written in childish green marker that they were sooooo sorry but they "had to" raise their prices a bit because the mean old Hawaii house raised the wage. And of course taxes under Biden, yada yada. In the end, the ELC was a victim of the owners' disposition. It's a very bad business model indeed, when politics, religion and greed actually get in the way of doing business. My best wishes to the employees, I really hope they can find something decent to replace this experience. After quickly searching a nearby breakfast spot near the Airbnb, we came across this spot. There was plenty of parking but the service was unfortunately very slow and I would say they weren't the friendliest. It was a very small spot with outdoor seating only. They have a variety of menu options which include some desserts. The breakfast bowl with sausage and bacon was okay and the iced coffee was fine. It was mainly the service which brought my review down. Hopefully others have or will not have the same experience but I recommend trying them out if you're in the area. read more

In other places, this would be a four stars but on Hawaii and near Volcanoes National Park this is a 5. The woman behind the counter was very friendly and kind which can be difficult to find in this busy tourist town. Thank you so much! We were there Nov 10. The ambiance is casual. The seating area is outside underneath an awning. There are world maps outside so you can pin the location you're from. The food is very good value especially for Hawaii. I paid about $12 each for a sandwich that was packed with fresh ingredients. It can be hard to find good value meals around Volcano. This sandwich came with packets of mayo and mustard on the side. I appreciated they didn't add this to the sandwich beforehand. Honestly, if you're on the Big Island, you probably know by now how expensive fresh veggies are. These veggies were delicious and good quality. I've had trouble finding such good quality veggies even at higher price points. I hope they never change their selection because I thought the fresh veggie sandwich was great for the value. It was big and very filling. Again, I wish I had caught the name of the young 5'2ish woman serving me. Someone on the Big Island offered me a job because they said it was hard to find someone reliable to show up for a job at a gas station. They thought I was a local. Well, this woman was very helpful and friendly despite the long line of customers. We were on our way to see the volcanos and our kids were desperate for a snack. We stumbled onto this place at 11:15 and they have just stopped making fresh food (at 11). This is a hidden gem that I would recommend to anyone looking for a delicious meal. The inside is small and has standing room only. The outside is set with picnic tables as well as a few tables with chairs. They ask that you wash your hands prior to entering and openly post that they can refuse business for any reason. What I'm about to say, I mean with all due respect -- I believe every person has the right to pray and worship however they choose; but at this particular business, the juxtaposition of Christian proselytization on top of the overpriced menu doesn't really sit right with me. I mean, I may be Jewish, but I don't remember Jesus being a big fan of inflated capitalism. Nor do I recall him inspiring rude behavior, but I digress. I came here because my friend insisted it was the only cafe near Volcano. I knew I shouldn't have patronized, but a caffeine addict must be appeased... Being the island of Hawai'i, I'd expect some quality coffee at the very least, but this is equivalent of gas station coffee from 7/11. Top that with a dismissive, unprofessional, rude attitude from the staff, I left feeling very unsatisfied and uncomfortable. We stopped in after being at the volcano national park, where we hiked at least 5 miles and we were hungry. Upon arrival, there is a sign to wash your hands before entering the ordering area (which I love). The lady explained all of their daily specials and she was very polite and nice. We ended up settling on a roast beef sandwich on sourdough and the spare ribs daily special. The sandwich was packed full of meat and the spare ribs were delicious. We also got a brownie for dessert which was a portion for 2 and it was moist and delicious. The pricing was extremely good for this area considering most places cost around $65 for two people to eat lunch and this was half of that. I loved this little place. The wife had a Reuben and I had a fish sandwich. Both were extremely large unfortunately it was lunchtime and it took 15 or 20 minutes to get our lunch go to the counter order and then they come out and find you put it on the table. the tables were clean And everything's outside a good lunch spot. read more

I poured some soy sauce over the white rice and dug into the layers of hams, bacons, eggs over hot rice. Yum! After eating lots of sandwiches and burgers, this simple plate really hit the spot. Not many choices to eat at the volcano but the eagle has landed on this spot. This is the most affordable place in the area besides cooking your own food. We double dipped and ate here for breakfast and lunch so this is a double review. Pro Tips: - Call in your order. So much faster than standing in line. - Always order a lunch sandwich for breakfast and lunch. They are cheaper than the breakfast sandwich ($4.25) if you like veggies like me. They charge $1.25 for EACH veggie item (lettuce, tomato etc) which is why our breakfast sandwich ended up costing us $10 each. Stick to a lunch sandwich for breakfast at $7 and it comes with all the veggies. - If you decide to grab a dessert, stick with the carrot cake. The guava was ok, but didn't have much flavor. Desserts run around $3.50 each. - Service is hit or miss. Cashier was a bit hard to understand and mumbled in the morning. Maybe it was the mask? But when we called in our order for lunch the lady answering the phone was great and was very pleasant. Yes the Jesus posters were there. No Christian music like someone else commented on Yelp. We ate here a couple times during our trip to see the volcano. It's in a small, remote town so if you set your expectations accordingly it's a nice little place to get some food. Plenty of lunch options on the menu, but the first day we got there a little after 1PM (closes at 2PM) so they were out of a lot of items. They did have lau lau & quiche left so we ate that. The next morning we ordered their breakfast croissants & bowls. All of the food was good, and the lau lau had butterfish which seems to be harder and harder to find. read more

We really enjoyed having breakfast here. The staff is very kind, this is clearly a family owned establishment that prides themselves in serving their community. There's a selection of baked goods inside and ordering is simple and easy. The outdoor seating feels like you're hanging out in your grandma's porch with the bright colors, decor and maps. This little gem just on the northeast side of the park in volcano village was such a great lunch stop! The ranger at the entrance station recommended it and I'm so glad he did. My husband got one of the lunch specials (spaghetti) and I got a sandwich (ham and Swiss). They do not skimp on portions here! The spaghetti and garlic bread (plus a side of mac salad) would have been plenty for both of us. But I'm glad I got the sandwich. So simple, but so tasty. Just a hefty portion of meat and cheese, a dense layer of fresh veggies, and another layer of meat and cheese. Nothing fancy, but just what I was looking for. My husband said the spaghetti was delicious--one of the best meals he's had on the island. I can attest that the garlic bread was yummy. Also, their Mac salad is the best we've had, too.
