Ok here me out. Was there a Kohl's at this location? No. Did we drive out of our way to purchase a swimsuit for my out of town child to wear to a public pool in Virginia? Yes. Did I, with bloodshot eyes, yell at my child TODAY ISNT ONLY ABOUT YOU at a nearby CVS and did my husband tell me to my face "you're gross" moments before we set off on our journey to procure said swimsuit? Also, yes. But all in all, a great lesson in humility, patience, packing and community. I highly recommend checking out Onesty Public Pool just 5 minutes from the Charlottesville mall. They kick the kids out every 45 minutes and parents get to rule the lazy river. You can't get a side of nacho cheese for your soft pretzel but you can ask for a nacho, hold the chips.

Helpful, knowledgeable and great to do business with. Not many of these kinds of stores for men around so when you find a jewel like this it's important to support.

I won't shop for suits anywhere else as long as I'm in Charlottesville, and here's why:…read more I went in to get a suit for some upcoming job interviews. Mike sized me up and was immediately on the phone to order my suit from his supplier, with expedited shipping at no extra charge. The price was a bit more than I'd pay at Men's Warehouse, but not a whole lot more, and the garments are of noticeably higher quality, and each suit comes with lifetime free alterations. He called me the minute it came in, and I went down to try it on. It fit great, and looked great, but I immediately noticed it was a charcoal grey, rather than the lighter grey I wanted, and which I heard Mike order on the phone. In short, I knew it was the supplier's mistake, not the Shop's. But Mike didn't pass the buck, didn't explain it away. He took accountability for his supplier's mistake, and had the charcoal suit altered for me to use in my interview, and ordered the correct grey one for me when I get back. I was expecting to give back the charcoal one, but when I returned to try on the altered suit, he insisted I keep both for the trouble. I was blown away. Mike's words were "I do business the right way, the way it used to be done". Indeed. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

I debated typing this out, but this story DOES need to be heard…read more Here's a few things you should know about me + this store before proceeding on: 1. I have stopped in to this J Crew on several occasions. 2. I have always been (until this weekend) treated with respect and friendliness. 3. I do often check out the clearance rack, because - let's face it - J Crew is stylish, cute...and somewhat overpriced. And I love a good deal! This is mind, I strolled into the J Crew on Saturday. The store wasn't very busy, but I wasn't greeting when I walked in. Whatever, no big. I walked around, checking out the new styles, etc. I didn't make the deliberate beeline toward the clearance rack - because even though I like deals, I do think that J Crew is better manufactured than 'cheap' brands. Anyway. After my walk around, I strolled to the clearance area and saw several good prices on plain tees and basic skirts. I was happy to see that there were a good variety of items in my size as well. I picked up a few items, and asked a clerk for a dressing room. Said clerk wasn't chatty (at all) but was pleasant enough. I tried on my items, and really fell in love with a striped tee with a laceup side. Kinda nautical looking - I glanced at the price - 10.99! I could barely believe it! Since their Japan Tsunami Recovery shirt was sold out (something I was hoping to purchase) I was ready to check out with just that item. So, I walked up and this was the exchange: Clerk: Are you ready to check out? Me: Yes, thanks. Clerk: Did anyone help you today? Me: Not really. Clerk: (fake voice) Oh, I am really sorry to hear that. Me: No, I mean, I didn't ask for help, I was just - Clerk: (exasperated) I know what you mean. Me: Okay. Clerk: (scans the item) Your total is $20.xx Me: Um, I think it was marked down from... Clerk: (looks at price) Yeah, well this was mismarked. Me: Excuse me? Clerk: Yeah, it's not supposed to be that price. (dryly) Sorry. Me: (flustered) Oh. Well. I don't really need it then. I walked out. I had this really weird feeling come over me. I mean, $20 for a J Crew shirt was still a good deal. But that wasn't the point. It was marked down. I was the customer. I should have fought it. I hate those kinds of confrontations. I already felt like she was judging me - thinking I was cheap. Not good enough for J Crew clothing. I had to banish those negative thoughts pronto! I glanced back in the store and saw the previously smug clerk speaking with who I assumed to be her manager. She seemed irritated. But gosh darn it - I wanted that silly shirt. I walked back in. The woman who I assumed was the manager told me she could honor that price. I thanked her and paid my $11.xx thank you very much. I made some kind of nervous small talk, to the effect of my excitement of finding such a good deal. The girl just rolled her eyes. I clutched the bag on the way out. Proud that I went back in but still weirdly emotional about the situation. When I returned home, I retold the story to hubs, when I realized, taking a glance at the tag - she had pulled off the 10.99 price! Just...weird. I'll think of it each time I wear that shirt...

I told her the phone case was fine, no issue - it was just that I am vegan and it was made of cow fur so I didn't want it. She totally understood, showed me where the other cases were and I was able to switch it out in less than 2 minutes.

Alvin Dennis is a standard small-town high-end store. Serving the formal needs of residents, as…read morewell as the school spirit of both local universities. These stores are a veritable staple in the communities they inhabit. While I do admire them for playing that role, they fail to deliver on the needs of the customer. That is disappointing. Alvin Dennis charges high sticker prices for low quality goods. I have been unhappy with the quality to price ratio of every item I have purchased from the store. In a small community like Lexington, you are often backed into the corner of merchant scarcity. Regardless, I would advise spending your Saturday with a trip to Richmond or Charlottesville. Most of their factory goods wouldn't pass the $25.00 mark in a major metro. The fact that these items often cost $70.00+ is quite disappointing. Finally, they have a strict policy of 'no returns for refund'. It is well documented and posted. I certainly agree that this choice belongs to the merchant. That being said, a high end store will often differentiate itself with great customer service. 'No returns for refund' is a good first step to mediocre customer service and experience. Given their prices, they certainly feel like a high end store. Given their policies, they certainly fail to service their customers in the same manner.

The woman at the register told us to let them know first thing the next morning if they didn't fit. We get to the place we're staying at, my husband tries his on... the sleeves look like a kid trying to fit into their old jacket. Keep in mind, THEY personally measured him. No big deal, the woman said to let them know. Right? Wrong. He went the next day with my brother (whose also didn't fit) and was more or less told to suck it and deal with it. If you tell us to let you know if they don't work, but then refuse a solution - you lied. They made a big deal that the seamstress was out of town and nothing could be done. So my mom went in and had to convince them to at least fix my husband's - these are pictures and video we'll have for life and he'd look ridiculous with such a poorly fitting tux jacket. Somehow after this, a seamstress magically was available to fix it. I bet we would have been treated differently if we were locals. Horrible, biased customer service.

My fiancé and I were in Harrisonburg, VA for a wedding in which he was a groomsman. We drove all the way from NYC before we realized that I had left his tux back in our apartment. That was at 4:25pm on Friday night, right before the rehearsal dinner, and the wedding was Saturday at 5pm. I called Classic Tuxedo in a panic, explaining that we needed an emergency tux. Brian answered and calmly said, "no problem, we can do that" and offered to stay open past 6 if we weren't able to make it before. Luckily we were right down the road so we went over to Classic Tuxedo where they immediately assuaged our fears by being incredibly helpful and affordable with absolutely no surcharge on emergency / last minute pricing. Evan assisted us - my fiancé showed him the photo of the tux everyone was wearing and he put together the perfect set for us that matched exactly. He also suggested a few things to make the tux more comfortable and just was a terrific help. By 5:30pm that day, we walked out of Classic Tuxedo with a perfect tux and everything we needed along with it. It doesn't even end there. Classic Tuxedo is closed on Sundays and we were heading back to NYC on Sunday. When we explained this to Evan, he offered to come into the store on his day off, Sunday, just to meet us so we could drop off the tux. I can't say enough positive things about how this team worked to make us comfortable (in a pretty nerve wracking situation!), and went out of their way and above and beyond to make things easy for us. Thank you SO much Kevin, Brian, and Evan! You saved our weekend!!!!
