The caveat of this price was you had to eat everything you ordered or you paid for what you didn't eat. We ordered 4 courses, a little less each time. What we liked best was the eel, crab and salmon, but didn't care for the squid and clams . They served quickly and when you told you were ready for more, they filled the order right away. Is a California roll "real" sushi? How you answer that question will actually determine how much you like Koi... Sushi lovers don't see a California roll as real sushi. Technically it is, but it's beyond basic and often the safe option for those new to sushi. I was referred to Koi by a bunch of California roll lovers (I later found out lol) and I didn't like it here. So you go in and get seated. You get asked what you want to drink, but it's like what do you have? There's no drink menu? You have tea, soda, juice, alcohol? Water is safe for me, so that's what I went with... On the table you get a pen(for the entire table) and 2 pieces of paper listing the sushi and other menu items(apps, soups, salads). You pick what you want and order from there. My problem is that there were no descriptions for most of the items. How is anyone supposed to know what's inside/included. I hate Mayo. I know some places have mayo inside or on their sushi, so the menu was a major issue for me. I ordered what I thought would be safe. I got a few specialty pieces with descriptions that didn't have mayo or soy sauce listed, as I'm not a soy sauce fan either. I was grossed out when one big tray was set in front of us with the entire tables Sushi order on it... I wish I took a picture, but I forgot. You don't know what is what and every piece of sushi had some kind of sauce over it. I now assume that's to cover up the absence of fresh fish... We also realized that the entire arder wasn't there. My sashimi was missing, and who knows if all of the sushi we ordered was really even there. It all looked alike except for my specialty roll with the avacado on the outside... and even that was drizzled in something, which was not expected. But rewind to the apps... The best way to describe the tempura was BLAND. There was no attempt to season it. The veggie tempura would have been good if it was seasoned. And the shrimp in the shrimp tempura was not cleaned. My friend bit his and you can see all of the black digestive remains. Apparently, they get upset when u don't finish food, but how are you supposed to finish that? Tried the mussel and it was meaty but whatever it was cooked in was gross to me. My friend ate it, and he said it was their spicy mayo.... Ewwww. See that was why I had a problem with the menu. No descriptions. The duck app I ordered came out on a bun with some kind of sauce. That was decent, but that's not what I thought I was ordering, again no descriptions... Got another sheet to order more, including the sashimi that we never got with the first order; and that was a disappointment. Small pieces of sashimi, didn't seem fresh. And some type of fried meat in the other sushi, which tasted like flour and grease. Again covered in a sauce... Gross One friend said, "You didn't like it cuz you tried to order the fancy stuff, and you need to keep it simple here" Well she can return with her California roll loving self. I won't be back. We are long time customers of Koi Sushi. We usually go there with lots of friends and have enjoyed it in the past. We went this week with another couple and were disappointed. When we place our order we put in specific quantities. In most cases we received half as much as we ordered. When ordering sashimi they were a little tiny pieces of salmon and tuna. I always enjoy the food and the servers treat us well, but we expect to receive what we ordered. Lately we are finding that Asian restaurants like Sushi Palace are a much better value. I'm not sure if we will be going back in the future. read more

Visiting East Haven for a conference, I stopped at Koi for dinner because of the overall good reviews. It's a nice little restaurant in a little plaza but once I stepped in, I was surprised at how dark and cold it was inside. I ordered my food and had to flag down the server for water. After a while, when my assorted sushi and sashmi platter came down, I was overall pleased though there were interesting seasonings I had never had before in all my travels - like a pepper encrusted salmon. I was also disappointed that the fish didn't take particular fresh - part of my visit to CT was this hope of eating wonderfully fresh seafood but Koi seemed to be doing what some sushi restaurants do - just carve up frozen blocks of fish. The prices were outrageous. $30 for weeknight AYCE sushi--PLUS they charged us $14 for our 5 year old son who ate two appetizer foods ONLY (this policy was not clearly marked anywhere in the restaurant or on menus). All of this would have been mediocre/passable--and I wouldn't have bothered to take the time to leave this review if it weren't for the incredibly rude waitress who felt the need to let us know that "next time we would be charged for food left on our plate." Truthfully, we made one reasonable sized order with limited extras but the food was just not that appetizing and we didn't want to leave feeling ill. What difference does it make if we finished every single last piece? Our bill was almost $100 and they still got paid regardless. Lot of complaints for this restaurant... First of all, we got there around 8:30pm. The hour online was indicated up to 10pm is the closing time. Too much mayonnaise and they even put mayonnaise on the raw salmon and some other liquid sauce and it looks like someone s vomitus. Very "helpful" So we were like rushing eating and end up paying full price for "50% the food" we got what we called "all you can eat sushi" and the harsh horrible service we got! I have to say, this place is being run so poorly. I came to eat with my son the other night: For a while now when I'd eaten here, the sushi chefs for some reason would just choose some random quantity even though I wrote in a specific quantity. I chose a quantity because I was splitting it with my son. They never give the right amount. This happened again on this specific visit. Also, they have their small children working here. I mean like 5 years old and maybe 10 years old. Awful. It's one thing to have the kid seat someone and it's another to have them take orders and things like that. I wanted to order a wine but never got a chance to because an adult never came to my table. Only to deliver the wrong food anyway. The kids sat people practically on top of each other. No space between tables. The actual adult staff never once checked on my table. When I mentioned this to the woman she got defensive and snapped at me. Never again will I go to this restaurant. It was chewy and fatty and just did not taste good at all..... almost like the chicken went bad. After that, I couldn't really even finish my sushi as I had lost my appetite. And did not want to WASTE my last two pieces of sushi so I asked if I could have them to go..... the waitress literally said "uhhhhhh okay??" I went this Koi Restaurant on Main Street, East Haven 1 year ago. The food was bad. Today my daughter insisted that I should go there for dinner since Koi is the only sushi place in the area. For the benefit of the doubt I agreed to try it again. It was worse. The sashimi looked as if it has been in the freezer for months. I've only been here a couple of times, but each visit has been fantastic. While they do takeout, the opportunity for all you can eat sushi (and other options) could not be passed by. We were seated immediately upon arriving, and it seemed that throughout our visit there was quite a decent bit of turnover and take out visitors. There is not a wide variety of alcoholic beverages to order, but definitely enough to have a small selection. The server provided us with a piece of paper that we were able to make our selections on. Once you complete it, all you need to do is put it at the edge of the table and voila! Food is delivered. You can eat as much as you want, but of course they do ask that you do not overorder. They offer much of the same many other all you can eat sushi places do. However the service was outstanding, our waitress was friendly and attentive. The service was fairly quick.
