Sonobana on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden has a wonderful diversified menu. The serving sizes are small and expensive but the quality is amazing. Like many other restaurants, their hours are also very limited. However, it is worth visiting for a really good sashimi and sushi experience. The seaweed salad is light and flavorful. A favorite of mine is the soba soup with vegetables. It is full of flavor and important nutrients. For sashimi, the salmon and tuna are served at just the right temperature and are very fresh. A real treat is the dragon roll. It is beautifully crafted and melts in your mouth. Overall, you won't be disappointed with the quality of this Japanese restaurant

My favorite sushi spot in the area! I've been here about 20-30 times, and it's always great quality. The sushi is fresh and the chefs/owners make authentic Japanese dishes. The best options are probably the bento box (~$18 for dinner, ~$13 for lunch) or the sushi sets (~$17-24)

I've been coming to Sono Bana for 10+ years, and will be supporting for years to come. In all that time, they've been consistent in both service and food! I now almost exclusively come for their lunch bento specials and have probably tried every combination of options from their extensive menu by now! Their calamari salad, shumai, and fried oysters are my favorite! It is such a good deal, and there is plenty of seating and parking in the back lot. I've tried other things off their menu including yakisoba and udon- nothing too impressive. I'd stick with their bento and sushi.

EXCELLENT sushi! That's all there is to say. I had the Tempura Maki Roll and the Spider Roll. The soft shell crab on the Spider roll was SO GOOD. Everything tasted so fresh and just looked so inviting on the plate. The others who were with me ordered Bento Box combination plates and devoured every bite. The service (waitress) is friendly, albeit a bit slow, but don't let that discourage you. The food is WELL worth the wait. And the prices are quite comparable to other sushi houses I've been to (and I've been to a LOT of 'em).

A real sleeper! Best sushi this side of the Mississippi..I'm not kidding. The owner is a Japanese man who has taken the art of sushi rice-making to a new level. The salmon is like butter, fresh , tasty and best of all, affordable. As authentic as if you were visiting Japan.

Worst service ever. This woman is so lazy and rude. She interrupted us while ordering by walking away. All food that was supposed to be hot was cold. We needed to ask for the check multiple times before leaving. Very inattentive. Sushi was good and creative. Don't expect speedy service.

A few friends and I went to Sono Bana for a little NYE dinner before heading off to a proper party. The place wasn't really crowded at all and our server, Kuni, was super nice as well as super gracious in letting us stay pretty late past closing. The sushi was good, but not the best I've ever had. I got the zaru soba for an appetizer, which was good but also a little disappointing because typically zaru soba is served cold and on ice and this was kind of lukewarm... :( I also tend to like a little bit more of a vinegar-y sauce and their sauce was kind of bland. However, the non-sushi parts of the dinner box ($15 for soup, dumplings, a main dish, and two sushi rolls all in all a very reasonable price) were really, really good. The chicken katsu was sliced thick and tender and the veggie gyoza were really tasty and melted in my mouth. Also, the super secret deal here that my friends and I particularly enjoyed was a bottle of Momokawa pearl sake, reasonably priced at $20. Yeah, if you picked up a bottle from a wine shop it'd be probably 25 - 50% cheaper. But, compared to the $10 a bottle for a large hot sake at most sushi places, you got probably 1.5x more, better quality sake for the money and it was really good. All in all, a cool little sushi restaurant that's worth an occasional stop in. Definitely worth a peek to try out their Japanese style dishes that aren't sushi, but I really didn't feel like their sushi was anything spectacular. It was good, though.

The toilet in the ladies room has many options.

I love this place. I've eaten there dozens and dozens of times. Best sushi I've had anywhere except for one place in Boston. And VERY VERY GOOD prices. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, which probably is why it's so much more affordable than other places - they probably have cheaper rent. I've tried a lot of things on the menu and never been disappointed, but I almost always get the Bento Box now. I absolutely love their gyoza and crunch rolls. Thinking about it now (at 9:30am - not the time I usually eat sushi!) is making my mouth water. The crunch rolls have the usual tuna, spicy sauce, and tempura bits on the outside. What sets this apart, is the fact that the tuna is not all mushed up so you can appreciate the awesome texture of the raw tuna. Also, there is avocado and very thinly sliced scallion in there. Yummmmmm!!! Their tempura fried ice cream is to die for as well. The service is awesome and very attentive. The decor is pleasant. And most importantly, it seems pretty authentic. I'll admit, I'm a Connecticut native of European descent who's never been to Asia. I was afraid I had Americanized taste for sushi (which I may). But I took a colleague/friend who was visiting from Japan to this restaurant. She said it was very good and authentic. The only thing that she said was different was that the sushi salad she's used to in Japan uses black seaweed (and every seaweed salad I've had, including the one here, uses green seaweed.) She liked it so much that she in turn took a VERY higher-up person in our company here (he's a VP of something and responsible for the entire Asian region) so they could indulge in comfort foods from back home while in America. I consider that a huge compliment to Sono Bana. My only complaint is that now that I've moved out of Hamden, it's too far to eat there every week. I still travel 45 minutes to eat there once a month or so though. As I said at the beginning, I LOVE THIS PLACE.

Quick hands! The night started off pretty amazing the waitress made an excellent catch and prevented my beer from falling. We ordered 2 boats and wow the presentation was great and they were very filling. Really enjoyed my experience here.

After much debating and research, we decided it was finally time to try Hachiroku in New Haven. We already love going to The Loop, let's sit down and eat. Heard lots of positive buzz from fellow Yelpers and foodies, including a previous 2024 New Haven Best Restaurant of the Year at the CRAZIES. All of the accolades and positive reviews are well earned. Cozy and delicious. That's what I'd describe about Hachiroku. The ambiance is cozy regardless if you're sitting at the bar or in the upstairs seating. The food we ordered also had the same vibe. The menu rotates with the seasons and the freshest ingredients which we greatly appreciated and it shows in the tastes. Our seasonal selections that we ordered included Hokkaido scallop and octopus carpaccio with ikura and seaweed and monkfish karaage. The carpaccio had the perfect components to complement each other. The monkfish karaage fully came together between the lemon and the side of pickled radish as well. We also ordered house made fresh tofu and added uni. The staff mentioned "oh it's perfect, it's uni season" which made my day. It was so delicious and my husband who normally doesn't like uni even noticed how fresh it was. We really went wild ordering everything, including the mini Harasu don (teishoku which comes with rice, pickles, and we picked the salad), Black Cod grilled with Yuzu sauce, Yaki Kinoko Mushrooms, and the Kakuni Short Rib (which pairs very well with a side of rice). The most cozy and perfect dish for winter was the seasonal vegetable agedashi. Warm and had a nice variety of vegetables with a vegetable dashi broth that healed the soul. We enjoyed every dish and we noticed already when looking at the menu again there's already so many new items to try. Excellent service and suggestions from the staff (because if we didn't have them, we could've ordered the whole menu in one night). Can't wait to come back and rave about Hachiroku (and its sister stores/restaurants) to everyone!

A small, cozy restaurant that is decorated to full anime vibes: anime art covering the walls from floor to ceiling for favorites like One Piece, Dragon Ball, and many more (how many can you name), dividers, lanterns, cherry blossoms - it's a total vibe! The menu is small, but has a variety from entrees, sushi, noodles, and shareable appetizers. There were specials as well that we took advantage of and ended up with a lot of food. My husband and I shared the Yukitori Platter, something that I haven't seen before on a menu. It's a Japanese street food that has skewered meat. Our platter had chicken, shrimp, beef, pork, and zucchini and each were very good. My husband got the Gyu Don (which is a beef bowl) and for $5 more, he got the set that included three side dishes and a miso soup. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Udon and made it a Combo for $5 more which included a classic Brown Sugar Bubble Tea and a Pork Bun. I loved my Udon, was flavorful and not too salty. The bubble tea was perfect, even the tapioca pearls weren't too hard or gummy. The service was good, but it was a slow start since there was only one staff member hosting and serving the dining room. It was a little busy with a couple of other tables. The staff were very kind and respectful. The food came out fast after we ordered. Akatsuki is really a hidden gem and it's a must try. My husband and I look forward to returning soon.

Chidori Revolving Sushi is a New Haven go-to for me. The premise is fun: you sit somewhere in the restaurant, that location has access to a conveyer belt system that is full of sushi at all times. You can grab any plate, usually containing 2 pieces of sushi, and once you're done, you're charged by putting the plate in a slot by your seat. The plates are colored based on price ($2.58 for blue plates, usually basic rolls like a philadelphia roll or spicy tuna roll, $3.79 for red plates, the most common type, which contain the specialty rolls, and then $5.79 for black plates, which are usually slices of fish over a piece of rice and much more fish-heavy). This format lets you try out a bunch of rolls, rather than committing to just 1 or 2. This is great if you're like me and get full a bit fast but love trying as many things as possible! There is also a tablet where you can order appetizers, full rolls, drinks, and more! I tried a number of rolls, with my favorite by far being the New Haven roll, which was fried and full of jalapeños and spicy tuna. I also loved the Steelers roll, with mango and salmon, and the angry roll, which was like a philadelphia roll with smoked salmon and kani on top! I had some of the mushroom soup, which was super dissimilar to the typical clear soup with mushroom broth and was instead very very strong on the mushroom. A super thick and oily broth, it was so rich and umami it was almost hard to finish, but super delicious!! I also had the pepper tuna appetizer, which was thicker and chewier than I'm used to, but the gimmick of this place is about the conveyer belt so I didn't expect complete perfection! Finally, I had the taiyaki dessert--a SHOWSTOPPER. Delicious and perfectly fried, the red bean is scrumptious inside and the ice cream is a great touch. After 10 plates are put into their little device, you get a small gacha toy which is a cute touch! I got a little Kuromi which was fun. Overall, I love this place. I recommend it a ton. My favorite appetizer the sexy jalapeño--a spicy tuna filled and fried jalapeño! Definitely swing by and give a bunch of different sushi pieces a try. The best time to hit it is when it's busy--I went at 8pm on a saturday and it seems they had just stopped putting more sushi out, since they close at 9. This meant the sushi slowly dwindled and I didn't get to try anything different from what I saw the first go-around. But it's still worth it!
